PROFILE

An animator affiliated with Studio Hercules. He was in charge of character design for projects including Basilisk: The Kōga Ninja Scrolls, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, among others.

—First, how are you feeling now that episode 12 has finished airing?

Somehow, we made it...

—Could you give us your honest impressions of what you thought when you heard the outline for the series?

It sounded like it'd be a work unlike anything I'd worked on before (because no one dies) so I was interested (and thought it would be very hard.)

—Do you have any favorite episodes, or scenes that left an impression on you?

Of course I have the strongest feelings about episode 1. We were still feeling out a lot of things then.

—Could you tell us your impressions when you first saw Director Utsumi's original character concepts, or anything important you took note of about the designs?

I was glad they were such anime-like anime characters. Only Director Utsumi knows the correct interpretations of her characters, so I tried to fulfill the order as best as I could.

—Were you ever inspired by working alongside the team at Studio No Border, who did the skateboard designs and illustrations?

I have no sense at all for that, so I'm grateful to them.

—Do you have a favorite character?

ADAM and Shadow. Also Sketchy.

—What were your impressions of the voice cast's performances?

Everyone was a perfect, A+ match for their characters, and I think they carried the visuals as well.

—Can you tell us about the appeal of skateboarding we felt in the series?

If I were younger...

—Do you have any anecdotes about Okinawa, the setting for the series?

I had plans to go to Ishigakijima, but things ended up being so difficult...

—If "S" opened in the real world, what part do you think you'd be most involved in?

Watching from a distance.

—Can you send a message to all the fans who loved SK8 the Infinity?

I think it was some kind of fate that you were able to discover this series, so thank you for your continued support.

I made a small discovery while preparing this post, and unfortunately I'm going to have to share my annoyance with you. I had a chuckle when comparing Shino and Eugene's OG character designs vs the anime adaptation, because why does it look like Eugene totally stole Shino's eyelashes? Well, turns out, this was intentional! According to Michinori Chiba's (anime character designer) commentary, the first anime design he made for Eugene stuck closely to Yu's OG draft. It was rejected and he was asked to make another, so for the second one he decided to make Eugene into a more "anime-like bishounen," and this version got approved. Yu did mention in her notes that she planned Eugene to have a vaguely handsome face though, just maybe not outright bishounen, lol. As for Shino, apparently Nagai and Chiba went over Yu's original draft and decided that if they don't "properly render" Shino's eyes he won't look like a "normal" person. They made several edits in order for Shino not to look like "that kind of person." His exact phrasing is in quotation marks. I don't know about you guys but to me it sounds like they thought Shino's eyes would make him look gay… Doesn't help that he literally said "nomaru," and in japanese fandom jargon "normal" stands for "straight," as in: BL= Boys Love, GL - Girls Love, NL - Normal Love. This doesn't mean that Shino was supposed to be straight, just that they wanted to remove a visual clue (because long lashes are gay apparently??) that he isn't. This kind of thinking makes me pop a vein, but mostly I'm salty they took away his pretty eyes!!! Don't get me wrong, Shino's eyes are still beautiful, but they could've been even more beautiful!! Arhhhghh!! I'm going to be drawing Shino with his OG draft eyes from now on out of pure spite :/

Yu Yu Hakusho - 25th Anniversary Celebration Illustration Collection (2018)

Seven members of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime staff designed these seven illustrations to congratulate the anime on its 25th Anniversary and the release of the Blu-ray BOX in 2018.

1. Botan by Mari Kitayama (Character Designer)

Mari Kitayama: in charge of the "Yu Yu Hakusho" character design. She is also active as an illustrator, and has done copyright illustrations for "BLEACH" and "Tokyo Ghoul".

2. Kurama by Michinori Chiba (Animation Director)

3. Kazuma Kuwabara by Tetsuya Nishio (Key Animator)
