Finished webcomics
I realized that I love to binge read finished webcomics until the end. Unfortunately, it’s hard to get recced finished webcomics, because once it’s finished, people talk less about them! And I never know if it’s because it’s finished, because it has been abandoned, or because it’s disappointing.
So I will rec finished webcomics/webtoons that I loved until the end, and I’d like to be recced more finished webcomics! (I’m taking webtoons too! I just don’t know them well)
* Digger (Ursula Vernon)
Tumblr media
A big omnibus or six small volumes.
It’s about a practical-minded wombat who digs too far and gets lost in a magic warp. Far away from her country, she must manages the local creatures and gods, and even if she really wants to go back home, she’s also a good person who wants to help.
I really love the art, the characters, the story, the humor, the vision of gods and religion.
~~~
* O Human Star (Blue Delliquanti)
Tumblr media
Three volumes in paper.
Near future, artificial intelligence works; a bit part of its success is due to the work of Alastair Sterling, who died prematurely.
But Alastair wakes up in a robot body and all his memories. He finds his former partner Brenda, who raises a robot daughter. It’s hard to find your own identity when you’re a robot and you’re dead. Not that it had always been easy before.
I love all of the story: the sci-fi slice of life, the queer self-discovery, the mystery about why Alastair is back, the flashbacks about the creation of artificial intelligence.
 ~~~
* Lady of the Shard (gigi d.g.)
Tumblr media
It’s a short story, really. 26 long pages, maybe one hour of reading.
It’s fantasy in space. An acolyte has a crush on the goddess she serves and it only gets worse when the goddess appears in the flesh. But it’s also the beginning of cosmic reveals about how the world as they know it was created, about how it might end.
I love the all-girls love polygon (warning for some creepy content though, you know how gods can be) , I love the mix of science-fiction and fantasy, I love how naturally slice of life turns into epic, and the author is good with the limited color palette.
~~~
* Chester 5000 XYV (Jess Fink)
Tumblr media
Two volumes in paper.
Porny webcomics! A mad scientist can’t keep up with his wife’s high sex drive. He builds her a robot sex toy, who is so lovable than soon the wife likes him better than her absent husband... I love the cute, explicit, fun, very consensual porn with robots. But I didn’t get very involved before the second volume, where the mad scientist gets his own backstory.
~~~
* Here be voodoo (Valériane Duvivier)
Tumblr media
Three volumes in paper.
One little girl swears revenge on the sorcerer who killed her whole family. For this, she will build a voodoo doll to help her, and also meet a cat, a scarecrow, and learn a lot of things about herself.
I love the worldbuilding, with a lot of research on tradictional voodoo and still a lot of imagination to embroider on it. I love Sunday’s strength, her determination, and her moral ambiguity, while still being a believable child.
~~~
* Lost nightmare (Julia K.)
Tumblr media
8 chapters - not a long story
Lost Nightmare is a story about a kid who’s raised to be the next bogieman, and his ambiguity about dreams and nightmares, and his relationship to the other denizens of the dreamworld.
I love the art a lot, and the main character’s personality, and the themes!
~~~
* A redtail's dream (Minna Sundberg)
Tumblr media
One big volume in paper.
A young fox spirit made a big mistakes. To fix it, he hires a human and his dog, who won’t be happy to have to travel in the world of dreams and myths just to fix a problem that’s not theirs (they will do it anyway)
I adore the art, and the use of Finnish myth. It’s a very beautiful story.
~~~
* Nimona (Noelle Stevenson)
Tumblr media
One medium-sized volume in paper.
I hesitated to rec it, because everyone already knows it? But after all, my first complaint was about finished webcomics not getting as much love as when they were running, and it’s true even for this one.
Ballister is a mad scientist in a fantasy universe. One day, Nimona, a shapeshifter teen who’s a big fan of him, asks to be his sidekick. Together they will fight the government.
It’s so cute and funny and the relationship between the two main characters is adorable, before it gets plotty and complicated. Also, Ballister, as a good mad scientist who loves his tropes, has something going with a knight on the other side.
The library will announce Tuesday that the Webcomics Web Archive is officially launching at loc.gov as part of its growth in “born-digital” collections.
The first phase of the webcomics online collection will include nearly 40 titles, including such long-running works as Josh Lesnick’s “Girly” and Zach Weiner’s “Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.”
Halsband says her team also sought political content, including Matt Bors’s “The Nib” archive, as well as comics representing diverse narratives on human sexuality, including Erika Moen’s “DAR” and Jess Fink’s “Chester 5000 XYV.”
The library also announced the launch of its Web Cultures Web Archive, “a representative sampling of websites documenting the creation of emergent cultural traditions on the web such as GIFs, memes and emoji,” the library says. It will be part of the institution’s American Folklife Center.
Review: Chester 5000 XYV: Isabelle & George Chester 5000 XYV: Isabelle & George by Jess Fink My rating: 3 of 5 stars I thought the first book was a great example of how erotic fiction could also be a work of art.
Essential Webcomics
A by no means exhaustive list, in no particular order:
Questionable Content by Jeph Jacques: this was the very first webcomic I ever got into.  It's a fairly standard, slice-of-life webcomic with robots.  I've heard that everyone can identify with at least one of the characters, and that's true.  I'm definitely a Hannelore. Ongoing.
Bite Me! by Dylan Meconis: A vampire parody of Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities?  But really, this is amazing.  I'm a huge history nerd and so is Meconis.  This is one of two webcomics I own a copy of. Finished.
Chester 5000 XYV by Jess Fink: This was pretty much my introduction to erotica.  Yes, I was an innocent flower once upon a time.  Thank heavens this webcomic came along. Finished
Girls With Slingshots by Danielle Corsetto: This was probably my second webcomic.  It's also slice-of-life with a cast of diverse and interesting characters.  Funny, touching - idk, just go read it!  On-going.
Hark! A Vagrant! by Kate Beaton: This is required reading for history nerds.  I've learned a lot from her silly little comics and I love her perspective.  I cannot say enough good things about this one; it's the other book I own. Ongoing.
Octopus Pie by Meredith Gran: A slice-of-life webcomic set in Brooklyn about disaffected hipsters.  Sort of?  That's a terrible description.  It's zany and funny and touching too and again, idk, just read it!  It just switched from B&W to color.  Ongoing.
Scary Go Round by John Allison:  This is a great comic set in the fictional Tackleford, UK.  It concerns twenty-somethings and their usually supernatural adventures.  If you like British humor - or rather, "humour" - you'll love this.  John Allison is so creative and PROLIFIC.  This led straight into his also great Bad Machinery.  Completed.
Stand Still Stay Silent by Minna Sundberg: A Nordic future dystopia ensemble adventure.  Really, need I say more?  The art is AMAZING and the characters are spot-on and funny.  Also check out her comic A Redtail's Dream.  She draws on a lot of Norse mythology and traditions.  The post I've had with some of the most notes was me sharing her infographic of Indo-European language tree. Ongoing.
Thistil Mistil Kistil by Sarah Schanze: The second Norse-themed comic on this list and I think I discovered them around the same time.  Coal is sent on a mission by Odin and accompanied by Loki.  On the way, he meets a Christian slave girl and the son of an Islamic caliph.  Do you need a better description?  Ongoing.
XKCD by Randall Munroe: I think it's required that you include this on any list of the best/favorite webcomics.  A smart, science-y, mathy,snarky gag-a-day comic.  If you don't read the alt-text, you're living your life wrong.  Ongoing
I figure I spend enough time on these comics, I might as well share my obsessions.  Enjoy!
