Today we're talking about Korean history from the joseon dynasty, namely the 22nd king of joseon, king Jeongjo the great (Birth name : Yi San).

Born : 28 October 1772, Changgyeong Palace, Hanseong (modern-day Séoul), Joseon.

He was the second legitimate son of crown prince sado who faced a tragic death punishment by his own father the king at the time, king Yeongjo. Jeongjo was around 11 at the time, he was declared the adoptive son of his uncle, Crown Prince Hyojang and aunt Princess consort Hyosun, both of whom were already dead by then.

The "Noron" was a Korean political faction, they protested jeongjo's succession to the throne repeatedly under the claim that he was the " son of a madman " or, " son of a prisoner " refering to his father crown prince sado who was mentally ill and later imprisoned for his acts.

In a journal written by jeongjo during his days as crown prince it was documented that, : "Even when the politicians(Noron members) met with the king, they did not bow down, and they were not afraid of making noise when they walked around"

The Noron members also repeatedly tried make Jeongjo's half brothers -- Prince Eunjeon, Prince Euneon, Prince Eunshin join the line of succession and surpass Jeongjo.

- Prince Euneon was exiled and later executed for marrying a catholic woman, by the then king Yeongjo.

- Prince Eunsin was exiled to Daejung in Jeju Island again, by king Yeongjo and died a year later with an epidemic.

- Prince Eunjeon was executed in the far future by Jeongjo, charged for treason.

Aside from that, Prince Jeongjo also had a younger sister, Princess Cheongyeon. She was later married off but she lived around the same time as jeongjo. His eldest brother, Crown prince Uiso, died the same year as he was born.

The people feared jeongjo's succession to the throne because they believed he would try to avenge the execution of his father but he did no such thing, he was crowned in

Gyeonghuigung palace, on 10th of March, 1776. During his reign he spent a lot of time trying to clear his father's name, according to records one of his first acts as new king was to tell the world that he was the son of crown prince sado, He also made sure his biological mother Lady Hyegyeong became the Dowager Queen, (a title held by the widow of a king, even though crown prince sado was never made king, jeongjo made sure to give his parents the right titles, also to his uncle and aunt, his adoptive parents).

As king, jeongjo was a great ruler. He continued his grandfather, king Yeongjo's Tangpyeong Policy in an attempt to balance political factions. He was always threatened by multiple political enemies, including his own family members and half brother Prince Eunjeon. He also established 'Kyujanggak' which was a royal library, purpose of which was to improve cultural and political stances and help him run the nation. He paid a lot of attention in the knowledge of philosophy, humanities, the then followed religion of Neo-Confucianism and was a well read person.

He favored the members of Soron over the Noron during his reign. He cared deeply for his nation, providing over 700,000 common people with employment and wages. He put great efforts into building 'The Hwaseong Fortress' which was designed to fend off enemy attacks.

He was married to Queen Hyoui and buried with her after death while also shared a famously "tragic" romance with a court maid, Ui-bin Seong. Also inspiring "The Red sleeve cuff" , a Korean drama depicting their love story.

The king lived most of his life At Changgyeongung Palace , one of the Five main palaces of Joseon.

Speaking of fashions, by observation it's safe to assume what was worn by most king's and crown prince's.

As crown prince he most likely wore a 'Gonryongpo' which was an everyday clothing for the king and the crown prince. It was a Blue colored robe with a round embroidered emblem. This emblem was of a four-toed dragon, it was named 'Samjoryongbo'. And most likely also worn the famous black long brimmed hat.

As king, he would wear the same 'Gonryongpo' in The color Red/Scarlet, and The round emblem of a five-toed dragon, named differently as 'ohjoryongbo'

Along with that, the addition of jwelleries was also made. And A waist belt with Jade, (gakdae) was worn with the robe. There were ofcourse different outfits for ceremonies and other events held.
