GEORGIA
23 June 2017 (Fri) – We drove to the Biblical History Center/Explorations in Antiquity Center in LaGrange, GA.  We are right on the border between Georgia and Alabama and the roads keep crossing back and forth over the border.  The clock on my phone keeps changing since Alabama is in the Central Time Zone and Georgia is in the Eastern Time Zone.
The Biblical History Center was a fascinating place.  The guide said there are only three places in the world that Israel has allowed artifacts to be displayed – New York, France, and Georgia.  When you first walk up to the center, you see five columns that look like something right out of the Middle East.  Entering the far end, visitors pass through five different archeological periods depicting a Canaanite temple, Israelite Village shrine, Village Early synagogue, Torah Ark, and Village Early church.
Tumblr media
After paying admission, visitors are taken to a room where they watch a six minute video on the mission of the center: “to help people experience the ancient biblical world, its history and culture.”  A guide then brought us into an outdoor area where there were full-scale replications of various items from the Middle East.  There was a tent made out of goat hair.  Interestingly, goat hair expands when it gets wet making the tent waterproof in the rain and shrinking to let air pass through the tent when it was warm.  A replica of a desert oasis had papyrus and bulrush-filled pools with a waterfall going over a simulated limestone cliff. There were two sheepfolds, a threshing floor and equipment, a couple of tombs, and a depiction of the type of tree trunks the Romans used to crucify Jews.
Tumblr media
The guide unlocked a door and brought us into the Israeli Archaeological Artifact Gallery.  The climate controlled area featured exhibits of Middle Est artifacts from museums and private collections.  There were ossuaries, shekels, items found in a sunken ship, and fishing paraphernalia.  It was all pretty fascinating and quite educational.  We enjoyed the center very much.
Next stop was The Taste of Lemon Restaurant in town.  It was a converted church.  Inside were about 25 tables of varying size arrayed around the interior.  The pews, organ, and altar had all been removed. The food was outrageous and very plentiful.  We relished the meal.  After lunch, we walked next door to look at a large dome shaped pavilion.  It turned out to be a movie theater.  The building was very ornate but there was no sign describing what it used to be used for.  It was quite large. We guessed it must have been a government building at one time.  There was a small police substation in one corner of the building.
Tumblr media
After dinner, we sat outside with a small campfire.  Paul managed to gather small sticks and branches from the woods nearby.  We were enjoying the fire when the rain clouds rolled in.  Sadly, we had to cut our campfire time short.
22 June 2017 (Thu) – At 9:10 a.m. we departed Albany, GA and headed out for West Point, GA.  We arrived at noon at the Army Corps of Engineers R. Shaefer Heard Campground. They offered us three spaces to choose from; we chose number 8.  Unfortunately, Paul was just not able to back the rig into the site.  While I directed on one side of the camper, the other side caught the edge of a sign post.  Only one week old and we already have a broken piece on the tail bumper.  Oy vay!!  We wound up asking to be moved to another site.  They gave us a pull-through that sits on a curve in the roadway but it’s quite spacious.
Tumblr media
Just as we finished setting up, the radio sent out an alarm stating there was a tornado warning in the following areas.  Unfortunately, we didn’t know exactly where we were.  I cannot get a signal on the phone or the Jetpack.  The campground not only has no wifi, it also has no cell signal in the area.  This is going to be a fun two days.
The campground is very nice.  Our campsite is right next to the West Point Lake. There are lots of trees around the park with 177 campsites surrounding the lake.  After set up, we drove around the campground.  There is a dam at one end of the lake with a small hydroelectric power station.  We parked and walked around the dam.  The visitors center is temporarily closed (no reason given).
Tumblr media
When we were done exploring the dam, we drove into town and bought groceries at WalMart.  The cost was $200!  I don’t know if I am imagining it, but it seems like food prices have spiked in the last month.  At any rate, I checked the email, phone messages, facebook, and especially, where we are:  Troup County in West Point, Georgia.
21 June 2017 (Wed) – We went to Chehaw Park and walked around the small zoo there.  It was begun by Jim Fowler of TV’s Wild Kingdom in 1997.  It was old and overgrown and the wooden walkways were slippery from a soft rainfall. There were some exotic animals, – black rhino, red wolves, emus, kangaroos, black ibis, thick knee bird, etc. – some farm animals, - cow, goats, donkey, pig – and a reptile house.  We were the only people in the zoo except for a group of kids in summer camp.  All the zoo activities take place on the weekend – animal shows, a safari adventure, and a train ride.  It was one of those “eh” experiences.
Tumblr media
We stopped for lunch at Blackbeard’s BBQ.  It was an interesting place.  Although its name was BBQ, there were all kinds of fish on the walls.  There were white lights adorning the walls and booths. The ribs were outstanding!  Paul had fried chicken and New Brunswick stew (which he said tasted like a BBQ chili).
When we got back, we drove around the base.  There were huge warehouses – about four of them a mile long and loads of equipment sitting outside.  It makes sense since this is a logistics base, but the amount of stuff was just mind boggling!
20 June 2017 (Tue) – We left Williston, FL at 10 a.m. and headed northwest to Albany, GA.  It rained steadily for the entire drive.  We stopped at a rest area just inside the Georgia border and made sandwiches for lunch. We are staying at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany.  It has no other name, which we think is kind of weird.  The cover at the main gate is only 13’0” high.  Paul parked and I walked over to ask the guard how we could get onto the base.  He directed us around the visitors building, through the parking lot, and to a gate that allowed us to bypass the checkpoint.  He checked our IDs then waved us on.
The campground is small.  There are 7 short term, pull through sites, and 7 back-in, long term sites.  All the long term sites are full.  Our site is gravel with full hookups and is very roomy.  They have wifi but it is slow.  There are very few signs around the base.  We drove to the MCCS office to pay and get a base map.  The clerk told us they don’t provide a map for security reasons.  She directed us to the BX and commissary.  We drove over there but they have no diesel fuel.  We returned to the campground and will have to go off base tomorrow to get some gas for the next leg of our trip.
