All my family in the UK are much older and recommend a lot of activities that have no interest to me (i.e. anything that involves the royals or glorifying the British monarchy or British imperialism). Thanks for getting in touch - I hope you have a fantastic time.  I’ve only ever been a tourist in these cities - so my advice is a bit patchy

My number one recommendation for London is buying Rebel Footprints by David Rosenberg and use his walks as the basis for a bit of exploring.  London is a great city for wandering around in - because neighbourhoods are all on top of each other.  I love using radical walking tours as the spine for exploring a city.  And in London there’s always a lots happening - or just a nice park to sit in. (You could also go on his tours - so you get the full experience).

I spent a day in London last weekend based on the last walk which starts at Whitechapel.  I went into Whitechapel Art Gallery (which had a great exhibtion about queer venues) and Freedom books (an anarchist book shop) before I started and had a great time.  When I stopped outside a Mosque that used to be a Synagogue and a headquarters for the Communist Party - this guy told me that I should come on the last Saturday of the month because they do tours to the public.  He told me they have a million bees in the Mosque - so if you are in London on the last Saturday of the month I recommend doing all the things I did and doing the Mosque tour too.  (I also went to Gay’s the Word - which is just south of Euston - which is relevant to me because that’s how I get into London - but is well worth visiting if you’re in the area).

If you can’t afford the book - then you can get some of the same experience looking for murals - and the London Mural Preservation Society website gives you lots of locations. And if you’re not interested in seeing places where the Communist Party headquarters used to be - you can use the same principle to whatever interests you.  Find a few interesting places from google - and then go from one to another and see what you like on the way. 

Slightly more normally touristy - I really like the Tate Modern (bonus you get to see where bits of the One Thing video was filmed) - it’s an amazing space and coming from NZ it’s always a bit of a shock to discover that a piece of art is real. The Globe is also a lot of fun - and they do some really interesting things.  I also really love the British Library - it has this room where they have their most impressive books and it’s really impressive.

You can get cheap tickets for the theatre a couple of different ways: entering lotteries, going for the tickets they release on the day or at hte half price ticket booth - @42mins  won tickets to Hamilton, which was very clever of her.  If you’re interested in theatre - don’t just look at the West End - I saw an amazing play at the Alameida theatre (and wanted to go to another play there recently, but it was booked out).

There’s always a shit tonne on in London - more in summer, it can be intimidating.  But a little bit of googling (and Time Out - which is a pretty good starting point) and you’ll find things that interest you.

Finally - if you’re not going in rush hour and you’re not in a hurry - I actually really like travelling around London in a bus. They’re incredibly cheap and you can go a really long way and you actually get to see the city.  

Manchester is a great city that I absolutely love (although if you’re going to be in Manchester I will point out that Liverpool is just a train ride away and nothing can really compare with the sight of the Sun not for sale).  Here’s a few things that I would recommend:

The People’s History Museum and hte Working Class Movement Library (actually in Salford - and it’s important to recognise that) - both have lots of material about Peterloo at the moment - and are great introductions to the past.  They also both run really interesting events so see what’s on while you’re there.

The Northern Quarter - it’s got lots of cafes and independent shops and is great just to wander round for a bit.  Also you can go to the fish and chip shop that Nick and Harry went to (42 Tib St).

Canal St and Sackville Gardens - Queer history! I love spending time in Sackville Gardens in particular.

There’s an independent theatre called Home that is worth checking out if you like interesting movies.

Niamos is an abandoned theatre in Hulme that has been squatted by people. It’s a bit hippy for me in places, but I went to a great exhibition there.  And touring the old theatre bit is really amazing. I think it’s open to visitors all the time, but can’t guarantee it. There’s also a Community Garden Centre right near by that looked cool for anyone who was more engaged in nature than I am.

My main advice isn’t really any particular thing - but just to trust in your own interest and explore.  Particularly because it sounds like you’ll be travelling alone so can just do whatever you want. Whatever you’re interested in, food, music, shopping, art, parks, museums - google a few places that sound interesting go see them and keep your eyes open on your way - go down alleys that look interesting - pop into places that are open just to see what they’re like.

Food and Drinks - some of my faves

Belgrave Music Hall

I love this place, it’s a bar with a burger kitchen called Patty Smith’s and  a pizza kitchen called Dough Boys where you can get the best pizza in Leeds for not very much money. On Sundays it’s even cheaper because of their half  price sale  - £1.25 a slice. Belgrave Music Hall, 1-1A Cross Belgrave St, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 8JP.

Shuffledog

A Brewdog brand bar which means hipsters, craft ales and food. They have beers called things like Jet Black Heart and Punk IPA and everyone has a beard or a hundred tattoos or both. There are two in Leeds, the newest one has shuffleboards in it for some reason. ShuffleDog, Crispin House, New York Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 7PF.

Nation of Shopkeepers

Dry Dock

Literally a boat which has been turned into a bar. This is owned by the Scream chain of pubs which is ultra studenty so there are lots of activities going, cheap menus and special offers. Gets crazy crowded at weekends. Dry Dock  Woodhouse Lane , Leeds, LS2 3AX

 Art and Stuff

The Royal Armouries - museum of arms and armour is in Leeds and is fascinating.

Leeds Art Gallery contains some of the country's most famous paintings including The Lady of Shallott by John William Waterhouse.

The Leeds City Museum, Kirkstall Abbey and Temple Newsam are other notable cultural attractions. In general museums and galleries in the UK are free to enter - some of the stately homes, abbeys etc have a small entrance fee, usually less than £5.

O2 Academy

Rock and pop shows mostly, some examples from this month are Ryan Adams, Nelly, and Weezer.

For big comedy and rock and pop shows as well as exhibitions. Examples this month are the Great British Vegan Show, The Stone Roses, and Blink 182.

Leeds City Centre has every major store you would expect to find as well as some high end stores like Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser. This is also the place for chain restaurants and there are also some good pubs.

Corn Exchange

A big round building with a central area used for markets eg record fairs, vintage clothes fairs etc. Around the edge of the building are small units for independent retailers, with a cafe in the middle. Kirkgate market is a food and goods indoor market, sort of like a farmer’s market

  Travel to other places

Manchester - train costs about £20 and takes 1 hour

Go here for Manchester Arena, Manchester United football ground, great shopping, great theatre, everything you can expect from a major city

 Liverpool - train costs about £30 in advance and takes about 1hr 40

Smaller than Manchester and easier to navigate, go here for Beatles stuff, football if you are so inclined, music, bars, the Walker Art Gallery, the World Museum, one of the most stunning libraries ever.

 Saltaire - train takes 15 minutes and costs about £5

A model village eg a factory owner basically turned it into a village for his workers to live in. It’s that archetypal cute little village with a lovely church, people playing cricket on the green, a museum about salt, ducks, narrow boats, a little art gallery.

 Wakefield - train takes 20 minutes and costs £5 return (roughly)

One of the UK’s smallest cities, and underrated as a place to visit. They have a lovely recently refurbished cathedral, a museum, some nice pubs, an authentic Victorian theatre called the Theatre Royal and some really friendly people.

 London - train takes 2hrs 30 and costs around £100 in advance

General info

 Trains are much much cheaper in advance, eg a train from Leeds to Liverpool return if bought a week in advance is about £25 whereas when you buy it on the day it is £35. Sometimes the difference can be even more insane, Liverpool to London could be £30 return 12 weeks in advance and £160 on the day. There are different train companies and each has their own discounts, cheap ways of booking etc. Generally the trains are safe, have toilets, catering, etc

Buses are cheaper than trains, a day ticket around Leeds allows you to get on any of that company’s buses all day and costs about £5

A Young Person’s Rail Card costs £30 a year and gets you 30% of all rail fairs - definitely worth getting if you are 16-25 https://www.16-25railcard.co.uk/

BATS

Back in the day...

BATS Theatre is an intimate venue located in the former Manchester Unity Oddfellows building at 1 Kent Terrace in central Wellington.

The building itself has had a long and varied life, being built in 1923 for the Oddfellows Britannia Lodge. From 1944 to 1976 it was owned by The Savage Club, and used as a dance hall and venue for amateur theatre. From the 1940s until 1975 Unity Theatre staged productions at 1 Kent Terrace. The Unity Theatre was a society with a tradition of left-wing political affiliations and a penchant for work by obscure European dramatists. Unity had a strong core membership which went on and contributed to the growth and success of both Downstage and Circa Theatres.

From 1976 1 Kent Terrace was owned by The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, a fraternal society that originated in London’s Theatre district in the early 1800s.  Originally comprised of stagehands and technicians, membership to the group became more open over the years.

From 1979 to 1988 the theatre was administered by the BATS Incorporated Society. The Buffaloes used the upper floors of the building for their Lodge Room, games room and offices, while BATS occupied only the performance space at the rear of the ground floor.

BATS is an acronym for the Bane and Austin Touring Society, named after Rodney Bane and David Austin, BATS’ original founding members. BATS began as a prolific amateur theatre company, producing school tours and shows, achieving a string of main-bill successes. In the early 80′s however, commitment waned and BATS Theatre simply became a venue for hire, administered by BATS Incorporated.

During these years, BATS became the home for New Zealand Drama School productions and was used by a number of different co-operatives. In spite of its shabby cult status, neglect and a lack of funds meant that BATS was deteriorating rapidly.

Building a new BATS

In 1988, while in his last year of drama school, Simon Bennett became aware of the BATS predicament. After many a drunken night spent with Simon Elson while working on King Lear, together they formulated a proposal to save BATS Theatre. Operating as NOMIS productions (Simon spelt backwards), the two Simons negotiated a lease from BATS Inc. and from November 1988 until April 1989 they worked organising sponsorship, money, materials, redesigning and rebuilding the foyer, stripping back and redecorating the auditorium, redesigning the access ways, cleaning up and redecorating backstage and lobbying all the right people for support.

Their policy for BATS was to rekindle the popularity and accessibility of theatre for young people and to provide a venue, a training ground and a way in for young people struggling to forge careers in the difficult world of professional theatre. These aims were achieved by:

Keeping ticket prices for students on a par with cinema admission and video hire rates.

Programming the theatre with entertainment value as a priority

Ensuring a consistently high standard of work

Keeping the doors open for young theatre practitioners.

Promoting the theatre along the lines of ‘cheap but good’ entertainment

BATS Theatre reopened as a professional venue on 1st April 1989. The opening shows were Baby with the Bathwater by Christopher Durang directed by Guy Boyce and JISM by Ken Duncum and Rebecca Rodden, directed by Simon Bennett.

Simon Bennett quickly discovered that theatre management and directing are mutually exclusive occupations. He resigned from the active management of BATS in May that year to pursue a career in directing, leaving it in the hands of Simon Elson.

Simon ran BATS for a year maintaining its high profile and ensuring a string of successful productions that somehow allowed him to balance the books without substantial external funding. During that year BATS hosted Simon’s brain-child The BATS Fringe Fest which grew into today’s New Zealand Fringe Festival; the biggest Fringe in the country with a rapidly growing international reputation.

Burning the house down

On 16th April 1990, just one year after BATS opened, fire raged through the backstage at 5.15am killing the theatre cat Cyclops who died of smoke inhalation. The fire started through an electrical fault in old wiring and left walls charred damaging dressing rooms and the auditorium. The Visitor by Full of Piranhas dance company was due to open the night of the fire and thousands of dollars worth of tailor-made costumes and props for the show had been destroyed.

On 13th May 1990 a variety concert at the St James Theatre was organised to raise funds to put BATS back on its feet. The concert was called Got A Light? and included such luminaries as the Topp Twins, Paul Holmes, Lynn of Tawa, The Six Volts, Gary McCormick, When the Cats Been Spayed, Kate Harcourt, Alice Fraser, Te Rakau Hua O Te Wau Tapu, Helen Moulder, Full of Piranhas and many other celebrities and theatre practitioners, all giving their time for free.

Wellington companies came to the rescue too, donating labour and materials for the rebuilding project. Circa and the Depot held benefit shows at Downstage Theatre. The Wellington City Council made the St James available for the concert. It attracted 1100 people and raised $22,000.00. Phoenix the new BATS cat was presented by Fran Wilde.

BATS reopened on 14th June with Ken Duncum’s Blue Sky Boys directed by Simon Bennett and starring Tim Balme and Michael Galvin.

BATS spreads its wings

In 1999 BATS took over the lease of the two small spaces on either side of the BATS foyer. Roy’s, the old fish n’ chippy, became home to the BATS office and what was previously Don’s Car Insurance Office was magically transformed into The Pit Bar, which was fondly referred to as Wellington’s smallest bar.

Since 1991 BATS Theatre has been managed by a growing number of full time staff, with the help of a broad base of contract workers and volunteers. Many ex-BATS staff have gone on to key and creative positions in the Arts industry. And with the help of Creative New Zealand BATS has introduced other new initiatives, such as the revolutionary annual STABcommission and the Young and Hungry Festival of New Works.

Over the years STAB has evolved from a fund that supported multiple new works into a commission for a single ambitious show and STAB Lab, a separate development fund focussed on developing an innovative new idea without the requirement to present a finished show.

Many innovative and memorable new works have sprung out of STAB including Apollo 13: Mission Control, Demeter’s Dark Ride, Sniper, Live at Six, Pandemic and WATCH.

In 2011, BATS landlords for 22 years, the Buffaloes, placed the BATS building on the market. Faced with the unprecedented opportunity of securing the long-term future of the theatre at 1 Kent Terrace, the BATS staff and Board rallied to build financial support for purchasing the building, but given the extremely limited timeframe it looked as though it wasn’t going to be possible to raise the required amount.

At the eleventh hour, celebrated filmmakers Sir Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh stepped in, offering to purchase the building and issue BATS with a long term lease.

BATS: Out of Site

At the beginning of 2013 BATS moved to a temporary location upstairs on the corner of Cuba and Dixon Streets while the 1 Kent Terrace landlords undertook a massive earthquake strengthening and renovation project on the 80+ year old building.

After a mad dash to find a temporary space the former infamous “Big Kumara” student bar (previously Barney’s and Bojangle’s) was transformed in a matter of weeks into a pop-up studio theatre of 74 seats and a grungy bar space which was dubbed Understudy.

Despite limited funds for renovation, which made for a cold and at times leaky experience, the venue thrived. In 20 months “out of site” BATS presented 139 shows across both the theatre and bar space and welcoming over 40,000 audience members through the doors.

Flying BATS Home

In April of 2014, shortly after the theatre's 25th birthday, BATS launched a public Fly BATS Home fundraising campaign, kicking the project off with a campaign launch concert at Shed 6 on Wellington’s waterfront with musical support from Fly My Pretties and Flight of the Conchords.

Over the subsequent months BATS received phenomenal support from the community, trusts and other donors which helped cover the cost of the theatre-specific elements of the renovated building, including updated technical equipment and furnishings. Over $600,000 was raised including $32,500 crowd-funded from the community.

The refurbishment undertaken by the Wellington Film Properties Trust was extensive, and many changes were made in keeping with the art deco style of the building. A back staircase was added to the building, allowing access between the old Buffaloes Lodge Room (now The Heyday Dome) and BATS dressing rooms. A new stained glass dome tops off the central stairwell, and the central corridor on the building’s ground floor was opened up into a roomier bar space.

On 22 November 2014 BATS reopened at its original 1 Kent Terrace home which has been beautifully refurbished and now offers three performance spaces, a renovated bar and foyer, and shiny new backstage, dressing room, kitchen, Green Room and office facilities.

2015 and 2016 were the busiest years to date. In 2016 alone, we presented 128 seasons made by nearly 1000 artists across three performance spaces, and welcomed over 30,000 audience members into the theatre.

Despite the huge changes and opportunities presented by the refurbished building the fundamental philosophy of BATS has stayed true to its original ambitions.

BATS constantly seeks to build a new young audience for theatre by presenting diverse, relevant and challenging theatre. BATS focuses on being accessible for both its audience and incoming theatre companies, giving support to developing arts practitioners and new New Zealand work.

Exchange to England Journey #1- The Theatre of Dreams

When coming to England, there is definitely one passionate that impossible to avoid. That passionate would be football. Arguably the biggest team in England with the biggest fan base and the largest global recognition would be Manchester United and its home ground titled Old Trafford is the first of locations and places on our Exchange to England journey. Old Trafford nicknamed “The Theatre of Dreams” by club legend Sir Bobby Charlton, is the only English league team stadium to have earnt UEFA Five Star Rating with a total capacity of 75,731 and heating under the grass to melt snow during harsh conditions in winter. Tours of Old Trafford are open to tourists who desire to explore the ins and outs of the stadiums where legends such as Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona have walked with tours of the ground, the locker room and the prestigious trophy cabinet which includes two Champions League trophies, twelve FA Cup trophies and an astronomical twenty Premier League Champions trophies. Coming to a theater near you: Amazon?

It looks like Amazon may be gearing up to make more moves in the brick-and-mortar world. Bloomberg reports that the e-commerce behemoth is putting itself in the running to acquire Landmark Theatres, which claims to be the United States’ largest chain of movie theaters focused on art house (indie and foreign) movies, with a network of 56 cinemas, covering 268 screens in 27 markets.

Bloomberg’s sources say that Amazon is going up against other potential acquirers in purchasing the business from Wagner/Cuban Cos., but that no final decisions have been made.

The companies aren’t publicly commenting on the reports, but it’s an interesting scenario to consider because of all the ways that it seems to fit into Amazon’s wider strategy. 

The company has done an incredible job of making it easy (and cheap) to buy virtually anything you want from it in the digital world, whether it’s necessities like toiletries, books, groceries, clothes and electronics, or digital products like movies, music and cloud storage space for your app or game, in as little as one click. Through its marketplace model — where it is both a middleman between consumers and sellers, and the seller itself of different goods and services — Amazon wants to be wherever people want to spend money.

But there are certain forms of retail that may never translate to the online world. Experiential retail — dining out at restaurants, going to a bar or event, picking a melon that you can smell before you pay for it and, of course, going to the movies — requires that you get up and go somewhere to do it.

Amazon knows this, and so it’s slowly, quietly amassing selective assets that will let people engage in the more physical side of commerce. These have included book stores, and its own futuristic, checkout-free food shops. And of course it spent $13.7 billion to gobble up the natural food leviathan Whole Foods.

The latter of these is very instructive when you consider how a movie theater chain might fit into the Amazon pantheon. Amazon’s Prime Fresh grocery delivery service gives busy users the convenience of skipping the grocery store, but Whole Foods also gives Amazon a way of capturing buyers who might prefer to make trips to a grocery store.

But that’s not all it does. It’s added Whole Foods discounts as yet another sweetener for Prime subscribers; it’s extending its formidable logistics muscle to Whole Foods ordering and delivery (first for Prime subscribers, naturally); and of course it has put in pop-up shops selling its other products, like the Kindle and the Echo, in prime spots when you enter a store.

Amazon owning a chain of theaters spells out a lot of opportunities for it in terms of expanding its interests in film; in experiential, physical commerce; and in leveraging the rest of the pieces in its commercial empire.

The world of movie theaters has been hobbling for years, with droves of consumers these days foregoing increasingly expensive tickets and snacks and opting to watch a slightly smaller screen in the comfort of their own home. But to the disruptive eye, that ageing business model is catnip, and so unsurprisingly, MoviePass has come along, seeing that there was an opportunity to try to revive the cinema experience by offering subscriptions for a flat rate to get more bums on those seats.

Yes, MoviePass is bleeding money, and it looks like a mess for many other reasons, but it’s had an impact, so much so that AMC has taken notice and launched its own competitor.

The world’s largest theater chain almost certainly won’t experience the same sort of pains that MoviePass has, because it both controls the means of distribution and has a sizeable support infrastructure, and of course owns the cinemas.

But if AMC has a safety net, then Amazon — one of the world’s most valuable companies — has airbags, collision sensors, seatbelts, automatic braking and maybe even an Alexa-powered predictive voice to tell you what to do next. If Amazon ran a loss-making chain of cinemas, it would be but a little drop in the bucket for it.

Amazon already has one of the biggest digital subscription businesses in the world, with more than 100 million Prime members, as of April 2018. Tacking a subscription to cinemas on to that, which either made going free or discounted, is a no-brainer.

But wait! You get more for the price of the Landmark Theatres! Amazon, as we know, also has a budding media business, offering movies, TV and music to Prime users. Included in that is its own original content machine, Amazon Studios, responsible for shows like Transparent and movies like Manchester by the Sea.

A theater chain acquisition would further open the distribution channels for Amazon’s own films, and give Amazon a much tighter grip on the costs for that distribution. And with a position covering theatrical, DVD and digital distribution windows, you can bet that will give Amazon more leverage when negotiating screen rights to films that it hasn’t produced itself.

Controlling distribution could also prove useful during awards season — the timing of a film’s release goes a long ways toward determining nominees. (And yes, those screens also become one more place where Amazon can run ads, too, in its budding advertising empire.)

And don’t forget the fact that theaters are, at the end of the day, also retail real estate.

It’s a long-known fact that cinemas make most of their money on concessions, and they have accordingly built out large lobby areas where people can mill about and spend money before and after sitting down in the darkened screening rooms. In addition to selling all the usual concessions (both made by Amazon and its marketplace partners), Amazon could use those spaces as they have with Whole Foods, creating retail experiences for products that might have nothing at all to do with what you came to the cinema for in the first place, but then suddenly seem like interesting places to try out something new.

Is it any wonder that even without Amazon or Landmark responding to Bloomberg’s report, theater chain stocks dropped on word of the news?
