Nathan Benjamin Young (September 15, 1862 — July 19, 1933) was an educator who helped advance African American education in the early 20th century. He became an educator after Booker T. Washington, who witnessed his skills in debating, invited him to teach at the Tuskegee Institute. Following his career as a teacher, he became a president of two major universities, Florida A&M University and Lincoln University. He and Henry Lee De Forest, the president of Talladega College, started a campaign to help improve education for the African American community.

He was born enslaved in Chatham, Virginia. His mother is Susan Smith, born enslaved in the South. They were sold off to a plantation overseer who tried to dodge the draft. His mother created a plot to escape slavery and run away to Tuscaloosa.

He attended Stillman College for three months. Following his work at this college, he attended Talladega College where he received a classical education in the teacher-training branch. Once he decided that his passion was to teach, he enrolled in Oberlin College where he obtained a BA and MA.

He was invited to serve as the head of the Tuskegee Institute’s academic department (1893-98) by Booker T. Washington. He was employed at Georgia State Industrial College as the Director of Teacher Training.

He served as the President of Florida A&M University (1901-23). He was forced to resign as president during the governorship of Cary A. Hardee, who wanted to abolish the college’s liberal arts program and convert it to a purely vocational school. He resigned under pressure from the Florida Board of Control. Dr. Venable and the Great Shower of Blood

We begin with a few facts about our chief investigator, lest anyone be tempted to dismiss outright bizarre facts described below. Professor Francis Preston Venable was one of the most accomplished scientists of his day. He excelled in chemistry and held multiple degrees from the University of Virginia and the German universities of Berlin and Göttingen. He authored major scientific books on atoms (1904) and radioactivity (1917), and is credited with having perfected the Bunsen burner. Dr. Venable retired in 1930 after serving fifty years on the University of North Carolina faculty. Venable Hall, one of the main science buildings on the U.N.C. campus, is named for him. 

So this is not the kind of guy who would risk his reputation on a trifling subject. But in 1884, he filed a serious scientific paper on a very strange topic indeed, namely, that a large quantity of blood seemed to have fallen out of the sky onto a small plot had of land in Chatham County, NC, less than fifteen miles from Chapel Hill. The event was first brought to the public’s attention in the March 6, 1884, issue of the Chatham Record newspaper. 

“The wife of Kit Lasater . . . who lives on the farm of Mr. Silas Beckwith in the New Hope Township, states that, about 2 o’clock on Monday the 25th of February . . . a shower of blood fell around her from a sun-bright sky! Many of the neighbors, after hearing of her statement, visited the spot and they all say that the ground-embracing an area about 60 feet in circumference-was covered with splotches of something like blood, and an examination of the trees in the space showed blood on the branches.”

Upon hearing about the strange event, Venable visited the spot himself and did a very detailed analysis of the samples he obtained. His extensive tests revealed the presence of hematine, a component of blood. His conclusion in the Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society: 

[t]his leaves little or no reasonable doubt then that the samples examined had blood upon them. The question arises, were they carefully taken; had no animal ever bled on the same ground; had pigs ever been slaughtered in the quarter of the field? etc. As to theories accounting for so singular a material falling from a cloudless sky. I have no plausible ones to offer. It may have been some bird of prey passing over, carrying a bleeding animal, but a good deal of blood must have fallen to cover so large a space. If a hoax has been perpetrated on the people of that neighborhood it has certainly been very clearly done and an object seems to be lacking.”

Similar observations had occurred from time to time, and Venable’s decision to submit his report may have been encouraged by intriguing articles that had appeared many years earlier in other scientific journals. In 1841, the American Journal of Science described a rain of muscle tissue, fat, and blood that landed in a tobacco field near Lebanon, Tennessee. The incident created fear among people who saw biblical portent in it. Fear were once reinforced when an article in the North Carolinian several years later headlined “GREAT FALL OF FLESH & BLOOD, EXTRAORDINARY PHENOMENON IN SAMPSON COUNTY” and described the “astonishing particulars” of a shower of gore that occurred on February 15, 1850, on the property of Thomas Clarkson,  near Clinton, NC. 

The shower fell in a roughly rectangular pattern and covered a zone about thirty feet wide by nearly three hundred yards long. It also included many large pieces of flesh-meat, liver, lungs, and brains-along with gobs of blood. The blood fell in enough quantity to run down the leaves of the trees and splash on the ground like a heavy rain. A lawyer who lived nearby spotted that it came from “a cloud overhead, having a red appearance, like a wind cloud. There was no rain.” He took samples of the fallen flesh materials, which were later confirmed to be putrefied flesh. 

The site of the old Beckwith farm in Chatham County is through to have been along Parker’s Creek, about a mile east of Mount Gilead Church (a few miles northeast of Pittsboro), while the Clarkson farm in Sampson County was thirteen miles southwest of Clinton. -Special thanks to Tom Maxwell

RIBA confirms 2021 and 2022 UK Awards programme plans

Friday 27th of November 2020 – The RIBA has today announced that the next call for UK awards entries will be next year – for the 2022 RIBA Awards.

The 2021 RIBA UK Awards (including Regional, National and the RIBA Stirling Prize) will be selected from the shortlist for the 2020 RIBA Regional, RIAS, and RSAW Awards.

The RIBA will continue to build on its rigorous eligibility and judging criteria, and, from the 2022 RIBA Awards, will require all project entries to have been in use for one year. This change will enable judges to assess projects with even more detail on their performance, more extensive client feedback, and a better understanding of how the project functions within its civic, communal and environmental context. It will also add greater focus to the sustainability criteria – further aligning them with the standards set out in the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge.

RIBA President Alan Jones said: “I am pleased that the 2021 RIBA UK Awards will focus on judging and celebrating the exceptional projects that we were unable to visit this year. Not only is this the fairest outcome – reached after detailed consultation with entrants and jurors – but it provides an unexpected opportunity for us to bring forward plans to significantly refresh our judging criteria – with projects having to be in use for one year. The RIBA and our members are committed to the best, sustainable design that will serve generations to come, and I am pleased that from 2022 we will be able to further demonstrate this through our awards programme.”

RIBA president Jane Duncan said,

“The lack of high-quality new housing is a huge issue in the UK so I am particularly pleased to see great examples of well-designed, sustainable new homes amongst our award winners,” she added.

“We all deserve a well-designed, affordable home, wherever we live in the country. I encourage other local authorities, developers and clients to look at these projects as exemplars.”

She praised the inclusion of a number of high-quality schools – including The Laboratory at Dulwich College and new music facilities at Wells Cathedral School – but said it was disappointing to see no new state school buildings included in this year’s awards.

“Well-designed schools support improved student achievement, and staff and student wellbeing and should be part of educational aspirations for all our schools, not just those in the fee-paying sector,” she said.

Guy Fawkes Night

“Remember, remember, the fifth of November...”

Hundreds of HK secondary students hold masked protests on 1 month anniversary of mask ban and to also object to recent arrests of fellow students. Many in Guy Fawkes masks.

1950-2000: Tsim Sha Tsui. Spontaneous masked rally. Since it also happens to be Guy Fawkes night, V for Vendetta masks are donned by most people. Heavy police.

2013: TST. March out from Urban Council Centenary Garden where the rally began. Crowd on move given police presence.

2019: TST. Crowd heads for Polytechnic University, a short distance away. The district where the demonstration was to be held was only announced at 1800 and exact location was only revealed at 1930, giving police as little time as possible to prevent it.

2037: TST. Crowd reaches Nathan Rd, barricades set up on Cameron Rd. Few frontliners with protective gear have been seen so far, while some appear to be in business dress after finishing work.

2046: TST. Crowd marches through streets of TST to avoid direct confrontation with the TST police station.

2053: Yau Ma Tei. Human chain spontaneously forms at Queen’s Elizabeth Hospital in support of critically injured student Chow Tsz-Lok.

2055: TST. Some vandalism on Chatham Rd South, police close in on area.

2100: TST. Roadblocks on side streets. Protesting citizens leave.

2105: TST. Water cannon chases and fires at citizens but truck is stuck in traffic and ends up spraying most of the water onto the cars in front of it while the citizens scamper away.

2107: TST. Water cannon on Chatham Rd, spraying short bursts of non-coloured water. Water hits journalists, no protesting citizens on scene. Ming Pao reporters appears to be slightly injured after this.

2116: TST. Water cannon deployed on Chatham Rd South.

2118: TST (PolyU). PolyU absolute defence line - across the road are loads of riot police.

2122: TST. 2 girls arrested at back of history museum. When bystanders shouted “What’s your name? Say it out loud!”, police shouted, “Cockroach!” Police shine bright lights to prevent reporters from filming. Most citizens have already scattered. 

2123: TST. Police appear to be retreating back to their vehicles near Chatham Rd. A small number of young ppl were seen to be arrested, but not dressed in black, and the area is home to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Possibility that they are students who reside on campus.

2136: TST. At least 5 arrested at back of history museum. Whereas NowTV says 4 arrested, 3 women and 1 man. Large numbers of police cars on Science Museum Rd. Police swooped just before they reached the relatively safe territory of PolyU. They had been waiting in their vans down on Salisbury Rd and wanted to make some arrests before it was too late.

2139: TST. Riot police clear debris from Austin Rd and redirect traffic as protesting citizens scatter.

2140: TST. Chatham Rd South reopens.

2158: TST. Owan Li, student rep in PolyU council, demanded riot police not to use strong lights at students. Police said some students pointed laser pens first. There was indeed someone using it from a distance. Some police were impatient and arrogant while two tried to pacify the situation.

2208: TST. As Owan Li repeatedly demanded to meet the commander, some officers flared up and dared Li to come over and meet the commander. Police eventually left the footbridge.

2254: Tsueng Kwan O. Local residents gather to protest riot police in Sheung Tak Estate where HKUST student Chow Tsz-Lok fell one storey and became comatose.

2310: TKO. Police fire tear gas to disperse residents.

2330: TKO. Residents continue protest, local councillors and Kwong Ming Estate’s building chairman are asking to talk to the police. Some protesting local residents are geared up and have laid bricks and debris on the “no-man’s land” between them and riot police to prevents a surprise advance.

2333: TKO. A line of journalists and local pro-democracy leaders urge police to leave and for all parties to calm. They stand in between and separate the residents and police in Kwong Ming Estate.

2341: TKO. Standoff continues. Former pro-dem lawmaker Andrew Cheng tells protesting residents using a loudspeaker that police say they will slowly retreat from TKO. (Spoiler: Police do leave but later renege on promise by coming back, though it might be another batch and not the batch that agreed to go off.)

Unknown: Unknown, HK Island? Riot police filmed shopping in full gear...are they even allowed to do that while on duty???  Buying some stuff from Laneige...

2355: TKO. Riot police continue to shine bright lights at the geared-up protesting residents as it reaches midnight.

0111: TKO. Riot police have returned to fire a second round of tear gas after midnight.

0135: TKO. Police keep yelling and shouting and making a ruckus in the estate, disturbing the residents’ sleep at such late hours for no reason. Lights are pointed at windows.

The Royals Open Chatham House

At the opening of Chatham House on the historical Britechester University campus, the Brixton and Burgundy Royals stand side by side by a dinosaur skull on display. The campus was originally founded two hundred years ago by Princess Cordelia of Brixton, and HM Queen Helena was excited to teach Queen Aubrey the university’s rich history. HM Queen Aubrey and her son HRH Prince Edward were all smiles all throughout their third day of their state visit.

Later that morning, (pictured left to right) Prince Edward of Burgundy enjoyed a conversation with rumored girlfriend Princess Mary and her older brother, Prince George of Brixton away from the eyes of their parents.

The young bluebloods were spotted walking around the campus and taking a tour of the prestigious university. Prince George helped himself to a food vendor’s cinnamon roll, which he got for free.

A source working at Britechester University confirmed the acceptance of their college applications. Their majors have not been leaked to the public, however. Though the Burgundy and Brixton palaces neither confirm nor deny the allegations of the princes and princess attending college next year, it’s safe to safe the royals are conquering Britechester.

Chance the Rapper

Chancelor Johnathan Bennett (born April 16, 1993), known professionally as Chance the Rapper, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and activist.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Chance the Rapper released his debut mixtape 10 Day in 2012. He began to gain mainstream recognition in 2013 after releasing his second mixtape, Acid Rap, which gained critical praise. He then released his third mixtape, Coloring Book, in 2016, which garnered further critical acclaim and attention. It earned him three Grammy Awards, including the award for Best Rap Album; upon winning, it became the first streaming-only album to win a Grammy Award, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. His debut studio album The Big Day was released on July 26, 2019.

Alongside his solo career, Chance the Rapper is a member of the Chicago collective Savemoney, and is the vocalist for the band the Social Experiment; they released the album Surf in May 2015, led by trumpeter Nico Segal. He is also involved in social activism in the Chicago community where he resides.

Early life

Chancelor Johnathan Bennett was born in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Ken Williams-Bennett, was an aide to the late Chicago mayor Harold Washington and then-Senator Barack Obama. His mother, Lisa Bennett, worked for the Illinois Attorney General. Bennett grew up in the middle-class neighborhood of West Chatham on Chicago's South Side. When Bennett was sixteen, his father began to work in the Department of Labor during President Barack Obama's first term. Bennett personally met President Obama in his youth and discussed his aspirations to be a rapper, to which Obama responded with "word". Bennett was originally going to move to Washington, D.C. following Obama's win in the 2008 presidential election, though those plans eventually fell through. Bennett attended Jones College Prep High School where he was a member of the Jewish Student Union.

Bennett's interest in music began with Michael Jackson, who he exclusively listened to on cassettes until the fifth grade. Growing up, Bennett's parents were constantly playing music, including Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke and other artists in the jazz and gospel genres. Bennett began listening to hip-hop after hearing "Through the Wire" by Kanye West on the radio while walking through Hyde Park, Chicago. After finding out the song was on West's debut album The College Dropout, Bennett purchased the album, making it the first hip-hop album that Bennett listened to. Bennett considers West a huge influence on him and has said that he was inspired to begin rapping by West. Bennett and West met each other in August 2014 at Bonnaroo Music Festival.

Bennett began rapping in the sixth grade when his cousin let him start using his studio. In his freshman year at Jones College Prep High School, Bennett formed the hip-hop duo Instrumentality alongside a friend. Many of Chance's earliest performances took place at the YOUmedia Lyricist Loft at Harold Washington Library in Chicago. After placing second in a local songwriting contest, Bennett met then-Chicago Mayor, Richard M. Daley who enjoyed his music. Bennett spent most of his junior year and a small amount of his senior year writing a draft for his debut project, 10 Day, which was later released after Bennett was suspended for ten days after being caught smoking cannabis.

Music career

2011–2012: Career beginnings and

10 Day

At Jones College Prep High School, some of his teachers ridiculed his aspirations to become a musician. In early 2011 during his senior year, following a 10-day suspension for marijuana possession on campus, Bennett recorded his first full-length project, a mixtape entitled 10 Day (also known as #10Day). In December 2011, he released a song titled "Windows", and publicly announced his 10 Day project. In February 2012, Bennett was highlighted as one of Complex magazine's "10 New Chicago Rappers to Watch Out For". Bennett says he spent "about eight months recording, writing, and making connections off of the hunger to put out something". Bennett released the mixtape on April 3, 2012, and it has since been downloaded over 500,000 times via mixtape-sharing site DatPiff. The mixtape was well-received locally and helped Bennett make connections with producers such as Chuck Inglish, Kenny Jame$ and Blended Babies. The mixtape also grabbed the attention of Forbes magazine, which featured it in the publication's Cheap Tunes column.

2012–2015: Acid Rap and The Social Experiment

In July 2012, Bennett appeared on American rapper Childish Gambino's sixth mixtape, Royalty, on the track "They Don't Like Me". Gambino would go on to ask Bennett to join on his first concert tour of North America as his opening act.

On April 30, 2013, Bennett released his second mixtape, Acid Rap, on DatPiff. The record has been downloaded over 1.5 million times. Bennett enlisted guest appearances from Twista, Vic Mensa, Saba, BJ the Chicago Kid, Action Bronson, Childish Gambino and Ab-Soul. Acid Rap was well-received by critics. At Metacritic, the mixtape received an average score of 86, based on 21 critics, which indicates "universal acclaim". It was nominated for Best Mixtape at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards. On May 6, 2013, the song "Paranoia" (produced by Nosaj Thing), after initially being featured as a hidden track on Acid Rap, was released as a contribution to Yours Truly and Adidas originals' "Songs from Scratch" series.

In June 2013, Bennett was featured in a commercial for MySpace as part of their relaunch, alongside fellow American rappers Mac Miller, Pharrell Williams and Schoolboy Q, among others. In July 2013, Acid Rap debuted at number 63 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, due to downloads on iTunes and Amazon. In August 2013, Bennett performed at the Chicago music festival Lollapalooza. Acid Rap was listed on multiple 50 best albums of 2013 lists, including 26th for Rolling Stone, 12th on Pitchfork's list, and ranked 4th by Complex. It was also listed as one of NPR Music's 50 Favorite Albums of 2013. Bennett began his Social Experiment Tour in Champaign, Illinois, on October 25, 2013, lasting until December 19, 2013.

In March 2014, Bennett appeared in a shoppable online video for Dockers, promoting the brand's spring line, in which Bennett talks his style, love for creating music, and how it feels to live in Los Angeles. On May 5, 2014, XXL revealed Bennett was included in their annual freshman class, alongside fellow up-and-comers Isaiah Rashad, Ty Dolla $ign, Rich Homie Quan, Vic Mensa, August Alsina, Troy Ave, Kevin Gates, Lil Bibby, Jon Connor, Lil Durk and Jarren Benton. During Fall 2014, Bennett and other artists participated in Verge Campus tour. In November 2014, Bennett was presented Chicago's "Outstanding Youth of the Year Award" by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

In January 2015, Bennett was listed number 7 on the "Forbes 30 Under 30" 2015 music list. In March 2015, Bennett released a short film called Mr. Happy, which was directed by Colin Tilley. Mr. Happy centers around the main character, named Victor, who is struggling from depression and was attempting to commit suicide. After many failed attempts to kill himself, he discovers Mr. Happy. On April 30, 2015, Bennett gave a lecture at Harvard University's Hiphop Archive & Research Institute. Just before midnight on May 28, 2015, Surf was released for free on the American iTunes store as an iTunes Exclusive. The album received high acclaim from music critics, receiving an aggregate score of 86 on review site Metacritic, which indicates "universal acclaim", based on 17 reviews. In June 2015, Bennett performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in the superjam concert collection. He also made a guest performance with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar, on stage with Earth, Wind & Fire. On July 19, 2015, Bennett and Lil B announced that they recorded a collaborative mixtape. The two rappers released it on August 5, titled Free (Based Freestyles Mixtape).

On October 13, 2015, Bennett released a video for a new song, titled "Family Matters", on his website. The song, which shares the same name as his fall 2015 tour with D.R.A.M., Metro Boomin, Towkio (and Hiatus Kaiyote on select dates), is a rework of the Kanye West song "Family Business" from his 2004 album The College Dropout. A few days before this, a video surfaced online of Bennett performing a new song live, ending the song by saying the words "third mixtape", leading many to believe the wait might be coming to a close for his next release. On October 27, 2015, Bennett premiered a new song, titled "Angels" featuring Saba, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. On December 12, 2015, Bennett performed on Saturday Night Live, on a new song, titled "Somewhere in Paradise".

2016–present: Coloring Book and The Big Day

In 2016, Bennett was a prominent figure on Kanye West's album The Life of Pablo, co-writing and appearing on several tracks, including "Ultralight Beam", "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1", "Famous", "Feedback", and "Waves". According to West, the album's release was delayed due to Bennett's desire for "Waves" to make the album's final cut. Bennett was also featured on a track titled "Need To Know" on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's album This Unruly Mess I've Made. The following March, Bennett was featured on Skrillex's remix of Hundred Waters' "Show Me Love". On April 16, 2016, Chance and other musicians, including Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, and J. Cole, met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the My Brother's Keeper Challenge initiative.

On May 12, 2016, Chance's third mixtape, Coloring Book (promoted as Chance 3), was released, streaming exclusively on Apple Music. In the first week, the mixtape was streamed over 57.3 million times, which was equivalent to 38,000 units sold, debuting at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart. It became the first release to chart solely on streams. The mixtape was met with widespread acclaim from music critics, and on review aggregator site Metacritic, received an average score of 89, based on 21 critics, which indicates "universal acclaim". On July 13, at the 2016 ESPY Awards show, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he performed a tribute song titled "I Was A Rock" for the late Muhammad Ali. On August 16, 2016, Chance wrote the single "We the People" paired in a Nike commercial titled "Unlimited Together", a film directed by Hiro Murai. A second commercial was released on October 4, by Nestlé, to promote the Kit Kat bar, with Chance starring in costume remixing their jingle. On September 15, 2016, Chance began his Magnificent Coloring World Tour in San Diego.

Bennett announced the Magnificent Coloring Tour with an event called Magnificent Coloring Day Festival at Chicago's Guaranteed Rate Field, with a line up including Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Skrillex, Tyler, the Creator and Lil Uzi Vert, taking place on September 24, 2016, being the first-ever music festival at U.S. Cellular Field. This one day festival event also featured a surprise appearance by Kanye West. Bennett launched a campaign in conjunction with rapperradio.com to get his music on the radio on August 17, 2016.

In September 2016, H&M solicited Bennett to headline their new campaign. In November 2016, he continued on the Magnificent Coloring World Tour, but cancelled the rest of his shows on the European leg due to personal reasons. In November 2016, Bennett announced during an interview with DJ Semtex that he was working on his debut album. Bennett was offered a chance to sign with Kanye West's GOOD Music in December 2016, though he refused due to his popularity as an independent artist and the freedom of not being attached to a label. In an August interview about his debut album, Bennett said he may sell the album, a departure from his previous projects' free distribution format. After a report was leaked claiming that audio distribution platform SoundCloud was close to bankruptcy and had laid off most of its workers, Bennett had a phone call with SoundCloud CEO Alex Ljung. Following the phone call, Bennett went onto Twitter, posting that SoundCloud is "here to stay". It was later reported that Bennett was just reflecting on what Ljung had previously published in a press release following the leak. Soon after, Bennett released a SoundCloud exclusive track with Young Thug called "Big B's" to benefit the platform, a surprise move that was planned in response to the SoundCloud bankruptcy leak.

In February 2017, Bennett performed at the 59th annual Grammy Awards, receiving 7 nominations and winning 3 Grammys. His performance featured Kirk Franklin and Tamela Mann, along with a gospel choir and orchestra conducted by Tom Brooks. On July 13, Bennett performed a NPR Tiny Desk Concert where he recited an original poem. The poem, entitled "The Other Side", was crafted on his ride from his hotel, in Washington D.C., to the NPR music offices and was written with black marker on typing paper. Chance also performed, "Juke Jam", a song off of his album Coloring Book, and a cover to Stevie Wonder's song "They Won't Go When I Go" released in 1974.

In July 2017, Bennett was nominated for an Emmy Award for his song "Last Christmas" that was performed on Saturday Night Live. He shares the nomination with Kenan Thompson, Eli Brueggemann, and Will Stephen in the category for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. In August 2017, Bennett headlined day three of Lollapalooza at Grant Park in his hometown of Chicago. His performance drew record crowds with some estimates making it the largest attended performance in the event's history. In November 2017, Bennett curated and headlined the Obama Foundation community event at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The event capstoned the inaugural Obama Summit event which featured special guests including former President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Andra Day, Gloria Estefan, Aziz Ansari, Lena Waithe, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and more.

In 2018, he featured on "Logout", a song from Saba's album Care for Me and "Best Life" from Cardi B's debut album Invasion of Privacy, and released 4 new songs in July. Bennett performed at Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life on October 31, 2018, a tribute concert celebrating the recently passed rapper Mac Miller. On November 29, 2018, Bennett released 2 new songs, "My Own Thing" and "The Man Who Has Everything", and announced on February 11, 2019, that his debut album would be released sometime in July of that same year. During Super Bowl LII Bennett appeared alongside The Backstreet Boys in a commercial for Doritos with the two artist performing a remix of "I Want it That Way" In May of that year Bennett was featured in Ed Sheeran's song "Cross Me" On July 26, 2019, Bennett released his debut studio album The Big Day.

In 2019, he wrote the song "True Kinda Love" for Steven Universe: The Movie alongside Rebecca Sugar, James Fauntleroy, Macie Stewart, and Julian Sanchez, with vocals being performed by Estelle and Zach Callison. In December 2019, Bennett cancelled his "The Big World Tour" for the second time in order to spend time with his newborn daughter.

In January 2020, it was announced that Bennett will be the host of the reboot of Punk'd that will air on the streaming service Quibi.

Artistry

Musical style

Bennett has stated in interviews with XXL and Complex that Kanye West, James Brown, MC Hammer, Prince, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, Esham, Eminem, Souls of Mischief and Freestyle Fellowship have influenced him. When asked about the gospel influences in his music, he also has stated that Kirk Franklin is one of his favorite artists, and his favorite composer.

Bennett's music has been described as versatile and uplifting. His music generally contains jazz-inspired melodies and gospel influences. Bennett's lyrics usually have references to Christian theology, his struggles with his faith and his upbringing. Chance incorporates choirs into his music to attempt to maximize the gospel undertones. Sharde' Chapman at HuffPost has described Bennett's lyrics as "creative" and "colorful".

Bennett often does traditional singing songs, and possesses a light-lyric tenor voice with an expansive vocal range that spans three octaves. Bennett's vocal range reaches its extreme low at the bass F♯ (F♯2), and rises to its peak high at the tenor high F (F5).

Fashion

Bennett's fashion style is a large part of his public image, and he has taken interest in the industry. Bennett has designed hats for the Chicago White Sox. The Hollywood Reporter has said that Bennett is "redefining fashion" with his style of generally wearing overalls and contesting traditional hip-hop fashion norms. Bennett wore a suit that was meant to imitate Michael Jackson at the 2017 BET Awards. Bennett was seen wearing Thom Browne clothing at the 2017 Grammys. Bennett has been known to wear a signature hat with the number three on it. “I’ve rationalized it to myself that it stands for the third mixtape, the Holy Trinity, and the three-pronged family of myself, my daughter, and my girl.” Bennett said in an interview in regards to the meaning of the number three.

Activism and politics

Bennett's father, Ken Bennett, has been involved in Democratic Party politics on the local and national level. Ken Bennett worked for Barack Obama as a presidential appointee and as an aide. Ken Bennett also worked on Obama's presidential campaign in 2008, and has worked as an aide to Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel and as 2019 Chicago mayoral campaign co-chair for Toni Preckwinkle. Despite his family's ties to the Democratic Party, Bennett has called himself an independent voter, though he has a history of supporting Democrats. Bennett volunteered with Barack Obama's reelection campaign by phonebanking in Hyde Park, Chicago and has given speeches at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.

In November 2014, Emanuel named Bennett as Chicago's Outstanding Youth of the Year for his activism. Bennett's work to support Chicago youth includes hosting Open Mike nights for Chicago-area high school students in collaboration with Chicago Public Library, which drew the attendance of fellow Chicago natives and celebrities like Hannibal Buress and Kanye West. In December 2015, Bennett joined with Detroit-based nonprofit group Empowerment Plan to start an initiative called Warmest Winter 2016. The initiative raised money to give 1,000 specially manufactured coats, which doubled as sleeping bags and shoulder bags, and were manufactured by homeless citizens of Detroit, to homeless citizens of Chicago. In June 2016, he hosted the Teens in the Park event, a free youth festival on Chicago's Northerly Island that drew an attendance of 3,300.

Bennett co-created a new nonprofit called SocialWorks in September 2016, an extension of his Open Mike program which aimed to create youth programs for residents of Chicago, among other goals. Open Mike nights and the Warmest Winter initiative later became part of SocialWorks.

Bennett has actively fought to combat gun violence in his hometown of Chicago and in 2014, along with his father, promoted the "#SaveChicago" campaign. The campaign sought to stop gun violence over Memorial Day Weekend. During 2014's Memorial Day weekend, Chicago went 42 straight hours without a shooting. Bennett met with President Obama at the White House on April 16, 2016, to discuss My Brother's Keeper Challenge, an initiative of the United States Federal Government to promote intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice, with other musicians, including Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes, Janelle Monáe, J. Cole, and others. Bennett started a Twitter campaign for May 23, 2016 using #May23 to stop gun violence for 42 hours.

On March 6, 2017, after a meeting with Governor Bruce Rauner that did not go well only days before, Bennett announced his intention to donate $1,000,000 to Chicago Public Schools in order to help offset the lack of government funding provided. Following this, a movement arose to try and inspire Bennett to run for mayor of Chicago. This was backed by fellow media personalities including musician Drake.

Bennett is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, having criticized him numerous times and drawn comparisons to former President Barack Obama. During the 2016 Presidential election, Bennett said he was not scared of a Trump presidency. When asked why by GQ, Bennett said "You gotta just understand, like, shit has been fucked-up, right? Like, 'Make America Great Again', that's not a real thing because shit ain't really switched up for [white middle class]". Bennett endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton on October 6, 2016, expressing concerns about the way she was treated in the media and also expressing that she could "fix Chicago" and led a "march" to numerous polling stations with thousands of Chicagoans. Following the victory of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, Bennett said "Trump was going to win, anybody in the world who's surprised by the election of Donald Trump has been ignorant of racism, and the tides and patterns of American history and world history." In February 2017, Bennett posted publicly on Twitter that he was worried President Trump was going to change constitutional term limits. Bennett has compared Trump's fascination with Chicago to "going to war". In August 2017, Bennett claimed to have a "bigger voice than Donald Trump". Bennett also became an outspoken critic of Chicago Mayor Emanuel later in his term, though his father had worked for Emanuel and he himself had earlier accepted Emanuel's support.

Bennett has been an active Twitter user, with several of his tweets on social issues going viral. For example, Bennett garnered attention from Time magazine when he tweeted criticism of an article titled "In Wake of Weinstein, Men Wonder If Hugging Women Still OK". Following Kanye West's Tweets announcing his support of Donald Trump in April 2018, Bennett tweeted in support of West's freedom to choose to be Republican, sparking controversy among his fanbase. Trump later tweeted thanking Bennett for his support of West, though Bennett disavowed Trump's praise.

In July 2018, Bennett purchased the Chicago journalism website Chicagoist from WNYC. The website had been inactive since it was abruptly shut down by former owner Joe Ricketts in November 2017, and Bennett planned to relaunch the website later in 2018. Chicagoist did not relaunch in 2018, and it is currently planning a 2019 reopening, according to its website.

In the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, Bennett was an active supporter of Amara Enyia. Bennett initially endorsed Enyia at a press conference in October 2018. Bennett campaigned with Enyia and made major donations to her mayoral bid. Fellow rapper and Chicago native Kanye West also donated to Enyia's campaign. In the February 2019 election, Enyia finished fifth out of fourteen candidates, and did not advance to the mayoral runoff. Lori Lightfoot and Preckwinkle, who had hired Chance's father as campaign co-chair, instead advanced to the runoff. In the runoff, Bennett endorsed Preckwinkle, criticizing Lightfoot as having worked against the interests of Chicago's black community.

In 2020, Bennett will be honored by Unicef at their annual gala in Chicago with the UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Award.

Personal life

Bennett lives in his hometown, Chicago. Bennett once shared a house in North Hollywood with James Blake. Describing his time in North Hollywood, Bennett called it "ungodly". After graduating from high school, Bennett attended a community college for a week before dropping out. Bennett has taken numerous recreational drugs during his lifetime, including LSD and Xanax, but has since stepped away from them.

Family

His younger brother, Taylor Bennett, is also a rapper. Both brothers began rapping at the same time and have a similar style. Both the rappers also draw inspiration from Chicago native Kanye West.

In July 2015, Bennett announced that he was expecting his first child with his girlfriend Kirsten Corley, whom he began to date in 2013. In September 2015, Corley gave birth to their daughter, Kensli. Kensli was kept out of social media until December 31, 2016, when Bennett posted a picture of her on Instagram. In May 2016, after they had stopped living together, Corley wanted the courts to declare Bennett as the father of their daughter, requiring him to pay child support.

In February 2017, Bennett's child support case reopened in an attempt to work out child support terms and a parenting schedule as Bennett and Corley moved to separate residences. The Chicago Sun-Times published an article about a dispute between the two in March 2017. Bennett replied to the article saying "Y'all better do y'all jobs and stop worrying about how good my family is. Just a friendly reminder. Don't let anybody get between you and your family." On March 21, 2017, the dispute was settled out of court. Corley and Bennett reconciled, and on July 4, 2018, they became engaged after 5 years together. The two married on March 9, 2019 at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, California with guests including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

Bennett spends much of his free time with his daughter, and frequently takes her on outings. These have included a Chicago Bulls basketball game, meeting the Obamas and working out.

In September 2019, Chance's wife Kirsten announced they had their second daughter named Marli.

Christianity

Bennett is a Christian and refers to Jesus Christ in many of his songs. Bennett was raised as a Christian by his grandmother but later fell out of the faith. He rediscovered his faith when his daughter was born with atrial flutter. Speaking about the situation, Bennett said "[I just] pray a whole lot, you know, and need a lot of angels and just see shit in a very, like, direct way. And…you know, God bless everything, it worked out well." Bennett wrote on Twitter following the situation on January 31, 2016, "Today's the last day my old life, last day smoking cigs. Headed to church for help. All things are possible thru Christ who strengthens me."

Bennett has labelled himself as a Christian rapper following the release of his mixtape Coloring Book. Bennett believes that God is to thank for his blessings and his success. He has attended multiple dates for Kanye West's Sunday Service, most notably performing his verse on "Ultralight Beam" at Coachella 2019 and in his hometown at Chicago's Huntington Bank Pavilion.

Pre-Trip team building at Chatham University.

Yesterday, the Costa Rica crew and I visited Chatham’s Eden Hall campus. While we were there, we were exposed to a lot of self-reflection and team building, and it really helped me better understand the role I play on the team. All of the activities were entertaining, while still requiring everyone on the team to play a part, and use their critical thinking. As these activities went on, I noticed the strong leadership goals that some of my peers have. I hope in the future--maybe even on our journey out of the country together--that I can gain the confidence to express my ideas more thoroughly, and be a better contributor to the team.

Anti-government protests continued near Polytechnic University. Police deployed water cannon while protesters momentarily went on the offensive after a police vehicle became stuck amongst bricks strewn on the street.

Riot police were trying to clear Chatham Road South which had been blocked by black-clad protesters who had scattered bricks on the road. Two water cannon trucks and an armoured vehicle were deployed, successfully pushing protesters off Chatham Road South.

One person was suspected to have been hit by water cannon and fell to the ground.

Protesters have regrouped and set up a new defence line on Cheong Wan Road which is between the University's campus and the museum of history.

The main university building has been fortified by protesters and the area around it was the scene of intense clashes overnight.

The nearby Cross-Harbour Tunnel, the main link between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, remains closed.

I know it’s long, and I appreciate every single one of you who reads through and has an almost first-hand experience of how tense things are.

Police said that everyone on scene will be charged with ‘rioting’, while calling ppl to leave by Y Core and setting up police there to arrest most ppl who actually follow police orders. 

Multiple police in different parts of HK saying they want 64 (Tiananmen Square Massacre 1989) to repeat. Which means that was probably the official plan. Can’t be a coincidence.

16 Nov 2019 evening: Sheung Shui. Pro-democracy District Council candidate Chiang Man-ching was attacked by 2 men while campaigning. Latest attack on pro-democracy activists and candidates. 2 men alighted a vehicle that suddenly stopped next to him at around 1820. They beat him without weapons, but possibly causing injuries with their rings or watches. Chiang’s head is in bandages. He has been quickly discharged from hospital and managed to attend a joint election rally by North District’s pro-dem candidates at 1200 on 17 Nov 2019.

0745: HK Gov orders a stop to glass bottle recycling and will reduce no. of glass bottle collection points to thwart Molotov cocktail production. As if this solves the problem, which is the protests and not Molotov cocktails. This is how far the gov is going just to refuse to find a political solution to the protests. Might as well ban lighters, matches, black clothing, all flammable things, sharp objects. Internet. Universities. Humans. Voila! Crisis solved. *eyeroll*

1037: PolyU. Teargas at Chatham Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, after citizens chase off ppl clearing barricades outside campus.

1052: PolyU. Hundreds of students and citizens stream out of PolyU to defend their lines against riot police after a fitful night. Gov desperate to clear the last holdout university redoubt with Cross Harbour Tunnel still blocked.

1316: PolyU. Stand-off continues as riot police mass outside Rosary Church on Chatham Rd South and citizens mass behind barricades with umbrellas on Austin Rd.

1330: CUHK. Some security guards told Apple Daily that they thought hte concrete slabs installed by the Highways Dept on No.2 Bridge yesterday were deliberately provocative towards students.

1330: PolyU. PolyU students issue urgent call for manpower.

1345: PolyU. Water cannon arrives at Chatham Rd South-Austin Rd junction.

1347: PolyU. PLA soldiers inside barracks spotted armed with Type 95 QBZ-9-1 rifle + blade and anti-riot gear. Shields and helmets already worn by sentries.

1350: PolyU. 2nd water cannon truck arrives from another direction on Catham Rd South. It fires water towards the barricades, though citizens have backed off. Two rounds of teargas.

1353: PolyU. As has regularly been the case over the past few months, the water cannon trucks then fire towards journos outside the campus. Blue dye!

1355: PolyU. Water cannon trucks fire pepper-aced water mixed with blue dye towards front entrance of campus. Police fire teargas from behind the trucks. Citizens hurl Molotov cocktails at trucks in response.

1357: PolyU. Thick black smoke and fires engulf Austin Rd outside the main entrance to PolyU.

1401: PolyU. Citizens not backing off despite joint streams of CS solution and blue dye from water cannons. Citizens are bringing back their slingshot thing and use it launch projectiles at police from one of the balconies of PolyU (PolyU has many balconies).

1403: PolyU. Hundreds of teargas canisters have been fired, although wind is blowing some of the smoke back towards the police firing form outside Rosary Church. A water cannon has fired so much it has retreated behind police lines to replenish liquids. 

1408: PolyU. Reporter from Mad Dog Daily hit directly in head by water cannon, brain injury. Bloody helmet left on scene. Mad Dog Daily is affiliated with ex-legislator Raymond Wong.

1413: PolyU. One of the water cannons retreat as citizens respond with petrol b*ombs from height.

1414: PolyU. 2 water cannons and 2 barricade smashers on scene. The water cannon goes again after a 10min standstill.

1414: PolyU. Toxic level of cyanide detected in air on the scene. Meter could only measure up to 30ppm but level of cyanide detected so hight that meter overloaded.

Safety level of cyanide according to various international guidelines: NIOSH: 4.7ppm Occupational exposure limit TLV: 10ppm as TWA (ACGIH 2001) IDLH (Immediate danger): 50ppm The display on the meter shows OL, meaning Overload.

1426: PolyU. Debris field was so intense even the armoured car was bogged down. Unimog armoured vehicle deploys LRAD (the grey hexagon on the top of the vehicle) for around 3 secs. LRAD, long range acoustic device - can cause headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, permanent hearing damage, damage to internal organs, unconsciousness. Permanent hearing loss occurs around 855-90 dB. LRAD can blast at 150dB. Effective transmission of LRAD is 300m. Reports say that the LRAD is used. Yet another govt promise broken as the HK gov and police once assured that it would never be used for crowd control. (Then again, they have lied so many times.) Police claimed that it would only be employed for transmission of messages/assisting in evacuation in disasters, anti-te*rro action or serious security incident. But NOT in public assembly and demonstration. Reports say that police cranked the LRAD on for a few seconds and a very distinctive high-pitched ear piercing alarm was heard.

1430: PolyU. Police media liaison officer injured by arrow. Gov and police issue statement condemning ‘violence’ after officer hit with arrow fired by unknown person(s). HOWEVER, he was shot in back of lower calf while he was FACING students since police are now the attacking force towards PolyU. Who shot him from behind? Citizens all stuck in PolyU as the police are besieging them and campus surrounded from all sides. Arrow is also not the archery arrow that students use for school sports, more like one from a crossbow. Students only have sports archery arrows. Looking at the photo, arrow fired at very low angle, shooter must have shot from a low point and so low that they had room to tilt the bow up slightly since arrow was pointed upwards. The gov and CCP have carried out attacks on their own ppl in a self-harm tactic to frame protesting citizens before...they have done so multiple times for the past few months. They had someone slash an officer’s throat (the officer can now barely speak), they severely slashed up another officer, etc. among many other ‘attacks’. So far evidence points more to yet another of these attacks and not towards the citizens as perps. Well, even if it’s by the citizens, it is in self-defence. Police have been besieging this place. Countless ppl shot in the eye by police over the few months with zero apology. Many ‘su*c*des’, t*rture and r*pe cases by police. Police regularly fire ammunitions (that aren’t supposed to be aimed at the head) at the head and at extreme close distance. Live shots fired at multiple ppl already. Some ppl condemn the protester violence but I personally am okay with this in this context (feel free to disagree with me, you aren’t me and I’m not you, you don’t have to agree with me) because they literally asked for it. Gov and police wanna whine about being shot by an arrow while they are carrying out an unlawful te*rror attack on a university campus? Get off.

1435: HKU. Eerily quiet and empty, security has begun removing some barricades, not much damage to the uni itself. MTR exit is boarded up. Pokfulam Rd is open to traffic.

1439: PolyU. Quiet again now as stand-off continues. Every so often the police vehicles emit an ear-peircing siren and citizens respond with a megaphone playing Für Elise. Reporters say that they are really not sure which one is worse.

1448: CityU. University requires students to leave dormitory today. Students not allowed to return to dorms to retrieve personal belongings. Email from hall masters say “MUST leave the hall WITH NO CHOICE”. University will stop water supply at 100 as well, due to “water being polluted”. Which we all know is not true and is just to prevent CityU from becoming another holdout. Also, why can’t they retrieve their stuff? Are they gonna let police in to ‘collect evidence’ without warrants?

1455: PolyU. Water cannon trucks stand by at junction after firing. Stand-off.

From the air, a large piece of graffiti seen scrawled on footbridge outside PolyU: “A murderer must pay with his life, a debtor must pay his debt./杀人填命血债血偿。”

1506: PolyU. Water cannon fired blue-dye+pepper solution again. CItizens in raincoats and with umbrellas. Some citizens moving to other side of campus where rumour has it that pro-Beijing supporters are gearing up. Still over 100 stationed in the area. Journos deftly dodge stream from water cannon as they aim at the press.

1525: PolyU. Entrance to campus has been turned into a supplies station, handing out gas masks, petrol b*ombs to those who are joining the fight. Someone shares that they have been guarding at the campus for 3 straight days.

Estimated 1525: PolyU. A journo keeps trembling after suffering the toxic water from the water cannon.

1526: Mongkok. Protest erupts, riot police arrive.

1532: PolyU. Access to campus fairly free.

1544: Mongkok. Teargas on Nathan Rd.

Unknown: CUHK. Staff are cleaning up teargas residue in gas masks and operating coats. 2,356 rounds were fired in campus on 12 Nov, according to students. Latest released video of the battle show police smiling as they fire a barrage of teargas, rubber bullets, foam bullets and unknown metal bullets at students on No.2 Bridge on 12 Nov.

1549: PolyU. Police explicitly smurfing areas where there are only press, deliberately firing blue toxic water at them.

1552: PolyU. Citizens retaliating with molotovs.

1558: PolyU. PolyU catapults getting far more accurate, hurling rocks around 50m to hit a water cannon across a no-man’s land road intersection on Chatham and Austin. Meanwhile production lines inside campus continue prepping bricks and petrol b*mbs for the frontlines.

1600: PolyU. Blue water, white water from 2 water cannon trucks, teargas rounds from Chatham Rd South. No change in frontline situation. Another pause. Unclear why police aren’t attacking from other points around campus. Endless water cannons and teargas.

1606: PolyU. A teargas canister has entered the Centre for Independent Language Learning, filling the room with smoke.

PolyU management and university president still absent and silent, while students resist attacking bodies with their bodies.

1623: Central. Several hundred at peaceful Glory to Hong Kong rally in Chater Garden. Prayer session-cum-protest for HK. Another rally-cum-protest marking 30yrs since fall of Berlin Wall set to commence in evening.

1638: PolyU. Intense clashes continue. A journo’s greying hair is dyed blue from the water cannon.

1643: PolyU. Reports of police units roaming History and Science Museums to detect any firing of arrows. Further to the outskirts of the campus, reports of police stopping and searching vehicles to halt any supplies.Videos of members of special force SDU (Special Duties Unit) being deployed into Museum of History with rifles, Arwen 37 (Anti Riot Weapon ENfield), used by British army for anti riot purposes.

1643: PolyU. Police issue new statement, labelling the protests at PolyU as a “riot” and that anyone participating in them can be charged for rioting.

1655: PolyU. HK Gov officially declared the confrontation outside PolyU as “riot”, meaning that ppl who happen to be on the scene, including onlookers, can be charged with rioting. 

EVERYONE ON SCENE WILL BE CHARGED WITH ‘RIOTING’ WITHOUT CARE FOR WHY THEY ARE ON SCENE. ‘RIOTING’ IS 10 YEARS JAIL.

This law has always been a point of contention as current laws make an individual responsible for their own actions, but this colonial era thing puts individuals responsible for the actions of a whole group, even if the individual themselves did not participate.

The gov and police’s plan: Call ppl to leave but trap them from leaving. Then they can just say “Oh we /asked/ you to leave but you disobeyed, so the punishment is justified.” All those who obey and try to leave are arrested and still charged, which means it’s literally tricking citizens into the lion’s mouth too. So no matter if you follow or not follow gov and police orders, you are doomed.

1658: PolyU. Estonian press team’s cameraman hit by burning teargas grenade, setting his entire bag on fire. Citizens cover him so that he can put it out, and police begin shooting rubber bullets at them.

1700: Riot police mass at Hung Hom Coliseum on east side of PolyU. The western entrances are where the main clashes are.

1702: Yau Ma Tei. Teargas buffet. Hundreds of pedestrians and shopowners hurt by indiscriminate firing of teargas on Nathan Rd. No advance warning, no chance to close shop or leave the street. Tourists who are walking to hotel require medical assistance.

1709: Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel. Pro-Beijing District Council candidate Maxine Yao led a group of supporters to try and clear away barricades blocking the tunnel but left shortly after being heckled and threatened by protesting citizens and passersby (which literally means that everyone who saw that heckled her).

1719: PolyU. Mood at PolyU has grown tense. Some citizens say that riot police may also be advancing from another entrance.

1720: Yau Ma Tei. So much teargas is being fired that when MTR train doors opened at Yau Ma Tei underground stn, all commuters got semi-teargassed. Another commuter: “On the way to PolyU by MTR, Yau Ma Tei station smelling like teargas already - ppl covering their noses IN THE FUCKING MOVING TRAIN”

1724: PolyU. Water cannons and Unimog U5000 hit by petrol b*mbs and on fire.

1727: PolyU. Citizens now abandoning road outside and streaming inside campus. Fearing a pincer attack, citizens are coming in to defend other entrances.

1729: PolyU. Police now advancing on Cheong Wan Rd bridge from Hung Hom MTR with massive teargas barrage. First time from here. About 400m on same road from where they have been attacking all day. Citizens have not budged from barricades on bridge but now under attack from 2 opposite sides. Clashes erupting on footbridges.

1731: PolyU. New flaming frontline - a bridge above the toll stations of Hung Hom tunnel. Armoured truck on scene. Volleys of teargas. Citizens hurl Molotovs.

1732: Central. The rally-goers march peacefully over Government Hill singing Hallelujah to the Lord.

1735: PolyU. While clashes happen along Cheong Wan Rd above the tunnel, there’s a standstill at the other end of the road near the intersection of Chatham Rd South.

1741: PolyU. Momentary pause in action. Police plans seem to be to secure the Cross Harbour Tunnel toll plaza outside PolyU.

1747: PolyU. The bridge goes over the Cross Harbour Tunnel entrance and has 2 levels. Citizens on both, police only on top. Citizens on left and barricade is where the blue sign in the middle of the bridge is. Police on the right. 100m between them.

1750: Riot police spotted armed with AR-15. The long guns are out today. It’s not the first time police are armed with this (e.g. late Sep, Jun, M-16 on 28 Sep in Hong Kong MTR stn underneath IFC Mall, M16s on 9 Sep on street).

1751: Central. Some ppl hurl verbal abuse at riot police nearby. A woman with 3 young kids was marching and yelling at the police and her daughter joined in too, to the amusement of the crowd. Crowd marches up to Dept of Justice’s offices and forms a human chain.

1752: PolyU. Standoff on bridge. Police control eastern end as several hundred citizens are on western end which connects to PolyU.

1800: PolyU. Standoff continues as police get closer.

1801: PolyU. Police commence move forward, citizens respond with Molotovs.

1803: PolyU. Armoured truck fails its advance on footbridge in face of Molotovs and blasts.

1806: PolyU. About 5 police vans arrive at a 3rd point, on Science Museum Rd. This means those on Cheong Wan Rd are for the time being surrounded on 3 sides. These police have chased away the several thousand who came to support the PolyU ppl and were gathered here.

1809: PolyU. Dozens of riot police move rapidly on bridge over Science Museum Rd towards Cheong Wan Rd.

1813: PolyU. Night falls and police have not gained an inch of ground against PolyU ppl after throwing everything at them. If anything, crowds seem to be growing.

1818: PolyU. 17 police vans and over 100 officers on Science Museum Rd and Granville Rd. So Cheong Wan Rd is now properly surrounded on 3 sides with the 4th side being the PolyU campus. Police are threatening bystanders.

1826: PolyU. Citizens set fire to a barricade on the pedestrian level of the bridge.

1832: PolyU. Clashes on eastern footbridges continue into the evening. Injured citizens limp away from frontlines. One man shot in chin by beanbag round. All sorts of material and utilities being put to use to defend campus, including gymnasium mats.

1835: PolyU. Reports that the on scene police commander refuesed to comply with Assistant Commissioner of Police’s order and took out AR-15 + MP5 to PolyU. The rifle and sub-machine gun can only fire live rounds in HK. Asst Comm of Police ordered the scene to NOT arm and on scene commander refused to comply and armed anyway. Suggestions being made that the known fracturing of the police chain of command is getting worse. The frontline officers may be taking out the weapons even after being told not to. This comes after we have multiple recorded examples of police ignoring orders to halt/withdraw/attack.

1840: PolyU. Teargas fired into no man’s land bus terminus after a failed molotov attempt at police vans nearby.

1856: Mongkok. Bricks strewn on road, small fires on road.

1902: PolyU. Riot police have imposed a lockdown on Hung Hom area. They have been heckled by crowds while the citizens being besieged have made calls for first aid materials.

1911: Mongkok. Teargas buffet. Seems like Mongkok is doing all it can to take some pressure off PolyU.

1915: PolyU. Fiery blaze engulfs footbridge. Police and citizens both retreat from the blaze; police continue firing teargas from across the bridge.

1916: Central. Hundreds gather at Edinburgh Place for a protest rally to commemorate 30th anni of fall of Berlin Wall.

1918: PolyU. The fire burns through the ceiling of the Hung Ho-PolyU footbridge. Flaming debris drops down to the empty Cross-Harbour Tunnel entrance below. Firefighters arrive shortly before 1930.

1930: PolyU. Heavy riot police presence in area, surround PolyU, some arriving journos from various outlets say they do not know how to get inside the campus.

1937: Sai Wan Ho. Citizens block roads around Tai On building.

1946: After 2000, all ppl in PolyU will be charged with rioting. Citizens trapped inside are prepared.

2022: Calls for protests to erupt across Hong Kong to divert police attention from PolyU. Especially heavy clashes in Mongkok btwn Nathan and Waterloo Rds.

2023: PolyU. Temporary calm.

2026: PolyU. Messages from ppl in PolyU run along the same line: “I am currently in PolyU. It’s not that we don’t want to leave. We are trapped. We are besieged. All exits are closed.”

2027: PolyU. Police urge citizens to surrender or they will arrest by force, including LETHAL FORCE. Police warn citizens that “time is running out” as they have been tolerated by the society. Sorry, but I think the police are mistaken. The society supports the protesting citizens.

2028: Mongkok. Citizens have retreated to intersection of Argyle and Nathan, a flare fired at police from the citizen frontline. After another barrage, police move back south, firing more teargas to cover their retreat.

2031: PolyU. Immediate call for action in all 18 Districts as PolyU is surrounded and even those without gear are not allowed to leave (i.e. even if you’re innocent, the gov and police are hellbent on making everyone on scene a ‘rioter’ even though everyone on scene is a victim because it was the POLICE who attacked first).

2039: Mongkok. A red signal flare burns merrily next to some letter boxes.

2040: PolyU. An armoured vehicle approaches a barricade near PolyU. Officers fire rounds of teargas before retreating.

2041: Kowloon. Police have departed after firing additional rounds of teargas from their vehicles.

2043: Kowloon. Moments after police leave in direction of Tsim Sha Tsui, citizens already move up and roadblocks are being thrown back onto road.

2046: PolyU. Ppl in PolyU vow to defend the campus to the very end, because they think it will be almost impossible to re-enter if they retreat, which makes it harder to block the Cross Harbour Tunnel again.

2053: PolyU. 1 armoured vehicle made a charge for the citizens on the bridge, but one was then set ablaze by Molotovs. It reversed while on fire as police fired teargas.

2055: PolyU. 1 injured citizens carried away from frontlines. Police point at least strong laser pens at pro-democracy lawmaker Ted Hui who is trying to negotiate with them. Ah, police say laser pens can kill (they can’t) yet they point it at a lawmaker? :)))) So is this a murder scene according to the HK Police’s standard? He attempts to negotiate to allow ppl stuck inside to leave, but is rebuffed and pepper sprayed. Whatever happens tonight, always remember: There was always another option. The gov and police deliberately denied it.

2055: PolyU. Messenger runs into canteen and announces a police car has been set on fire. Entire canteen erupts in cheers and slogans.

2057: PolyU. Now not even first aiders and doctors are allowed to leave PolyU.  Literally anyone present at PolyU, regardless of reason, identity and status, is charged with ‘rioting’. Not even doctors are charged like this in real war!

2114: PolyU. PolyU Management calls on ppl inside to not sue violence and leave campus immediately. Oh shut up. Campus is completely surrounded with no way of departing, and departing means immediate arrest and riot charge. PolyU calls the police onto their own students and now acts like some caring parent? Buzz off. They refer to the current situation as “social issue” like it’s relatively harmless while police are still shooting at kids.

2127: Kowloon. Police have returned, water cannon and armoured truck currently moving south along Nathan Rd.

2130: Police announce that all ppl inside campus should leave via Y Core by 2200, but they should “follow police orders” when doing so. Otherwise, they will storm campus to make arrests.

2131: Tsim Sha Tsui. Water cannon convoy currently north bound after making U turn outside Tsim Sha Tsui police station

2133: PolyU. It is said that the only exit is at Y Core, but there are conflicting reports with some succeeding in exiting while some are arrested. Some journos are being fired upon while exiting. Citizens guess that police are lying to lure ppl to exit and be arrested.

2135: PolyU. 2 journalists successfully leave campus on boss’ order. Bags were searched and they were called ‘cockroaches’ by police on the way out.

2137: PolyU. Crowd on bridge is thinning after hours of resistance.

2141: PolyU. From Hung Hom, police are broadcasting songs with loudspeaker to urge citizens to surrender.

2143: Kowloon. Police dismount and currently guard intersection of Gascoigne and Nathan Rd right outside Eaton Hotel.

2143: Whampoa. Citizens setting up roadblocks.

2153: PolyU. Inmedia reporter livestreams whether it is possible as per police claim to leave campus via Y Core.

2153: PolyU. Reporters on the ground had a meeting discussing whether to evacuate or stay. Most decide to stay.

2156: PolyU. Call for all citizens inside PolyU to send photo, personal info and “Non-suicidal Disclaimer” to a trusted contact or Spark Alliance.

2158: PolyU. First batch of students and civilians arrested at Y Core when trying to leave under police orders. Police urge ppl to leave but deploy riot police at exit. Nice.

2201: Kowloon. Police push south, stopping by Ning Po St.

2209: Kowloon. Police now at Jordan Rd, issue multiple warnings to onlookers to disperse.

Police seem determined to let situation worsen so that they have legit excuses to roll out heavy weapons without having to be responsible for any casualties.

As if they are at a hunting ground looking for vermin to shoot at. Except the citizens of Hong Kong are no beasts but are humans entitled to human rights and freedoms.

Also where is PolyU Management? I mean, we all know that they are with the gov and police this time round, but at least CUHK’s Rocky Tuan was there to maintain a facade when tensions escalated.

2210: PolyU. Police fire teargas at Y Core. Inmedia’s livestreaming to see if journos can leave via Y Core has ended after the group of journos who decide to leave and test the route encounter the riot police at Y Core. Last scenes show 2 medics being arrested. Police are doing smth that doesn’t even happen in some military-grade conflicts - arrest and threatening of medical personnel. Police fire stun grenades, causing several extremely loud bangs and bright flashes of light. Journos report ringing in the ears. Earplugs being handed out.

2212: CityU. 30 riot police enter CityU student residence area. The university has previously issued immediate orders for all students to abandon dorms and leave personal belongings behind, and has cut off water at 1600. So what are the police here for? To take fingerprints to transfer elsewhere? Or to ‘collect evidence’?

Only reporters with valid press pass allowed to leave PolyU, other reporters who fail to show press pass or are not accredited press (e.g. forum, independent, citizen) are NOT allowed to leave. What the heck is a “valid pass”, since gov doesn’t issue official press passes? So does this mean the pro-dem and independent outlets will be arrested while the pro-Beijing outlets get a free pass?

2252: Live feeds show ppl gathering in neighbouring districts to distract police.

2255: Education Bureau announces that all schools will continue to be suspended on Mon 18 Nov 2019.

Reporter Su Xinqi reports that Y Core exit is a trap to capture ppl fleeing campus. 5 first aiders and 2 reporters leaving with Su and Alvin Lum were stopped. 1 plainclothes man was immediately arrested after riot police lined them up on the roadside and asked them to hold both hands up. She says she was standing on the other end for about an hour and hasn’t seen anyone else except Alvin make it past. Alvin corroborates, saying for about 45 min (since 2203), there was no one else out from Y Core except him and Su.

Drivers waiting to pick up citizens are not allowed to stay, police threaten teargas. Police also note car plates and say “We will come back to you afterwards!”

2304: Tai Po. Police argue with citizens at residence. One of them shout: “Don’t you dare to leave - I want 64 (Tiananmen Square Massacre) to repeat!”

She reports that many local journos were arrested while their team was allowed to pass (they are an Estonian news outlet).

0001: PolyU. A lone motorcyclist tries to rush through police cordon from Cross-Harbour Tunnel to reach PolyU but is spotted and searched by police.

0102: Tsim Sha Tsui East. Riot police search vehicles by the harbourfront, a short distance from PolyU.

0103: Tsim Sha Tsui East. At Mody Rd Garden where some citizens had fled, dozens of riot police suddenly rush in, firing pepper bullets. When the citizens were chased by the police across Salisbury Rd where all the “school bus” cars are backed up waiting to ferry citizens, all the cars started tooting their horns to distract the police. Then two police officers accosted 1 motorist and pointed their rifle at him.

0103: HK Catholic Church’s liberal-leaning bishop Joseph Ha is reportedly attempting to reach PolyU.

0104: Presidents of all 5 universities, including PolyU, have urged all near the campus to restrain and leave the area. Forever lip service and no action lol. Police not restraining, so citizens can’t restrain nor leave. The root of the problem is the police. Always, they say “all” and actually are implicitly blaming the citizens. Then again, uni heads, all the politics behind getting the seat, they are backed by China and pro-Beijing forces.

0117: CHRF vice-convenor Figo Chan is heading to outskirts of PolyU with convenor Jimmy Sham still injured from an attack.

0128: Tsim Sha Tsui East. To divert police attention away from PolyU, a commercial building has been vandalised, with a fire extinguisher on ceiling spraying water around the floor.

0129: Tsim Sha Tsui. A crowd of citizens sitting outside a cafe who had been chatting as well as shouting support, warnings and advice for protesting citizens moments earlier all fell totally silent when police arrived waving their guns.

A police officer taunts trapped PolyU citizens from a bridge, saying we’ve got you now and he chuckles with his colleagues. To which a citizen shouts back, try coming here and saying that without your weapons.

0131: PolyU. A squad of citizens break away from the pack to launch a sideswipe at the police vehicles with fire b*ombs.

0132: PolyU. Firefighters check the heavily-damaged police armoured vehicle after citizens threw Molotovs onto it earlier in the day.

0134: PolyU Governing Council’s student member Owan Li, holding back tears, tells reporters that he fears a repeat of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre in his own uni and calls on alumni to help the students inside.

0134: PolyU. Water cannon tries to charge at citizens again but met with fierce resistance, lots of Molotovs attempting to burn the vehicles.

0136: PolyU. 10 pro-dem lawmakers and Bishop Ha at Y Core, calling for police restraint. Trying to negotiate with police and awaiting response from police commander.

0144: Jordan. Armoured vehicle advances, 10+ rubber bullets fired at Austin Rd and Chatham Rd South junction.

0145: Jordan. Hundreds of citizens form human supply lines on Jordan Rd to ferry umbrellas, water and other items to barricades. 

0146: PolyU. Police rebuff lawmakers’ and Bishop Ha’s request for them to show restraint and lift the siege. The lawmakers and Bishop Ha discuss their next moves.

0147: PolyU. Riot police fire rubber bullets nonstop from inside the armoured vehicle.

0154: PolyU. Members of “Protect Our Children”, an older group of volunteers consisting of parents and elderly that attempts to mediate between police and frontliners, have decided to stay at PolyU to assist the wounded.

0155: Tseung Kwan O. 50+ riot police outside local MTR stn.

Posted 0157 (I estimate 0116 from HKFP’s screenshot): PolyU. Lawmaker Ted Hui says he has managed to reach a balcony inside the campus and feels the stinging smell of teargas and pepper spray. He describes the situation as a humanitarian disaster, with the campus cut off from supplies.

Night: Hung Hom. Apparently police broadcast songs to attempt to demoralise PolyU ppl. Such as songs from deceased Cantopop star Leslie Cheung and Roman Tam, both from a bygone era. They play songs like ‘Chase’, ‘The Glory of Friendship’, ‘Time to Say Goodbye to School’, ‘Horn’ and the famous 十面埋伏 ‘Ambush from Ten Sides’, ‘Auld Lang Syne’. Deliberate song choices.  To be honest...I don’t think they really affect the citizens...the music actually cheers citizens imo, since students these days listen to music while working so this is just helping them to recreate an environment where they can focus on resisting. Also I personally find ‘Ambush from Ten Sides’ a really encouraging tune that just makes me want to fight back even more instead of demoralising me????

HKIIAD’s Sunny Cheung says that his 16yo student and his classmates are trapped in PolyU. His student tells him that there is no way to leave and they have no choice but to resist.

Queen Aubrey & Crown Prince Edward to Visit Brixton

This morning, the Palace officially announced Her Majesty Queen Aubrey’s four-day state visit to Brixton. She will be accompanied by her son, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Edward. They are expected to meet the newly elected Prime Minister and attend the opening of Chatham House, the latest education and learning facility on Britechester University’s historical campus.
