One thing about Renee is that she's well known at school, but there isn't anyone she considers close enough to share personal stuff with. Well there's Kalei, but she just met her a few weeks ago! The only people she's comfortable talking to is her cousin Charlie, however it's not like she could talk much about Robbie with him. So there's really only Jay, who she facetimes often to chat!
She thinks what would it be like to have a pen pal? The thought of having a friend who lives somewhere other than Sulani intrigues her and there's something about talking personal things to a stranger that puts her mind at ease. And then she met V.

Sorry for the spam likes today. Favorite jazz album?? I saw a post on your blog that mentioned Mingus ah um. That’s either my fave or Birth of Cool (Miles Davis does do my favorite version of On Green Dolphin Street). Though both are kinda basic choices I want to expand my listening.
so i'm gonna give you a few albums (and album-adjacent things) with the caveat that i haven't heard most of what's out there ^_^ i'm just a casual fan
ornette coleman - the shape of jazz to come
this album is on another level. the multiple layers of brass crisscross each other, playing dissonant chaos, then they rip into solos that could melt charlie parker's fingers. the bass shreds and stumbles up and down some wild assortment of scales. the drums patter out a frantic rhythm that somehow ties everything together.
it shouldn't make sense, but it feels so alive. you'll catch quotes from flight of the bumblebee over rainy oceans of rhythm. herds of wild animals shuffle back and forth in a forest painted by jackson pollock. and then whoever's not soloing yells "woo! alright!"
it's not even my favorite ornette coleman recording. that honor goes to this youtube upload of a live show in germany, 1978. the bass intro, instantly picked up by the drummer, is so electric. the haunting melodies, borrowed from the rite of spring, are traded from sax to guitar. the whole band feels like they're operating on instinct. this is what a basquiat painting SOUNDS like. like a genius artist drawing with their non-dominant hand. LITERALLY coleman plays a violin left-handed at one point. it's incredible.
john coltrane - my favorite things
trane puts so much panache into this simple little pop song. the opening chords are heavy with drama. the groove is insanely tight. every time he plays the melody, it's got a new rhythm, to the point where he seems to be playing a game with the listener. "how many ways can i get you to feel this groove?" the song is melted, bent, and stretched like molten glass, in a 13 minute display of total virtuosity
and that's just track 1!!!! this album is timeless. every second is as fresh and vibrant as it was in 1961
herbie hancock - headhunters
herbie has always been at the cutting edge of jazz fusion. this is his definitive statement on funk
this album is intensely rhythmic, laying out catchy melodies over funk foundations. the whole band seems to just be having a blast. the grooves are often busy and hypermelodic, with no room to breathe as everyone jams at once. it's like an all-night house party in a bouncy castle full of confetti
if you're a fan of japanese jazz like caseopia, or jazz-influenced video game music, this album will feel shockingly familiar to you. its wildly creative synth work, uplifting and colorful chords, and eclectic sound palette are all DECADES ahead of their time.
where would we be without herbie? i'd wager the entire global music landscape would be different. from hip hop to big beat to drum n bass, we all stand on the shoulders of giants. hancock is a titan. the giants that raise us up are standing on his shoulders

WorkOfArt! Series Part Three: Jackson Pollock (Final Part)

At night Bobby dreams of you, it happens often since you’ve been away. He dreams of that blue dress, the one you were wearing during the night of the engagement party. The fabric fluttering through his fingers when he reaches for you, that smile of yours as you slip out of his grasp. When he wakes up he looks at the pillow alongside of him and remembers the last night he had you in his bed, the last morning he kissed your lips, the last time he made love to you in his sheets.
It's been eight months since saw you in Ithica and he feels the loss acutely. Without you he’s starting to slip, those unhealthy habits have begun forming again and he just can’t seem to help himself. He doesn’t sleep enough, he only eats for sustenance, he stays at the precinct later and later until it’s more home than his actual apartment. He knows he’s going through the motions, there’s no joy in his life, no peace. It’s like Nicole took a knife, stabbed it into his chest and bled all the colour out of his world.
When he gets the call about the house in Astoria he’s dozing, his pulse races as he snatches up his cell phone and holds it to his ear.
“Are you sure it’s her?” He asks Detective Charlie Tate when he arrives on the scene looking more dishevelled than anyone has ever seen him. The blue button up he’s wearing is crumpled, sleeves rolled up, top buttons undone. It’s thrown over a pair of well-worn jeans and boots that have seen better days. The badge on his hip glints in the light from the streetlamp as he follows Charlie towards the steps leading up to the house.
“I worked with her five years in Homicide.” Charlie tells him, taking off his flat cap and smoothing down his hair before replacing it upon his head. “I have no doubt it’s her.”
Bobby feels something inside of him break, his heart shattering into fragments as he takes the steps two at a time. There’s an urgency in his mannerisms because he needs to see for himself, because right now he can’t quite believe that you were back in New York, that he didn’t know.
He can taste the blood when he steps inside the living room, the copper tang on his tongue. The first thing that draws his attention is the black leather doctor’s bag resting on the coffee table, the stainless-steel tools neatly set out alongside a vial and a syringe. He tilts his head surveying the label on the bottle and his mouth goes dry.
It’s a paralytic.
His gaze switches back to the items on the table before he spots the cardboard box alongside the leg of the table. He sees the butcher’s paper sticking out of it and he knows; he knows what Nicole had planned for you. He knows if he studies the label, he’ll see his name on the postage.
“She wants to give you her heart, Bobby.” Nicole had whispered in his ear. “Are you going to let her?”
Nicole is giving it to him instead.
“The body’s in the kitchen.” Charlie tells him.
He swallows hard against the intense ache blossoming through his body. His eyes burn because he knows what he’s walking into. He feels the weight of his anguish with every step he takes towards the kitchen, the apprehension sitting in his chest. The M.E has already zipped up the body bag and it feels Nicole is plunging a spear right into the depths of his soul. His gaze comes to linger to the wall beyond it, the blood spatter and brain matter erupting onto paintwork like a Jackson Pollock. He frowns because he doesn’t expect this…
He hears your voice, his name rolling off your lips and for a second, he allows himself to hope, but he knows hope is fleeting thing. A way of the mind trying to deny the horror of the event. So, he closes his eyes for the briefest moment and inhales because at heart Bobby is realist, he’s not going to deny the truth no matter how much he may want to.
“Bobby.” It’s the sound of Eames voice that brings him out of it, he tilts his head towards her and something inside of him just stops.
“I’ll give the two of you a minute.” Eames says as she raises to her feet.
For a moment he can’t process because you’re there, sitting at the kitchen table. You’ve gained a little weight since he last saw you and it looks good, healthy. Your hairs a little shorter and your pallor a little pale but overall, you seem unscathed. He looks back at the body bag, his gaze flicking to the blood spatter on the wall, and it clicks.
It occurs to him that this is the first time in over eight months that he’s been alone with you, and he doesn’t know what to say. He sinks down into Eames’ newly vacated chair. His hand reaching out for yours, he clasps it gently, his thumb trailing over the hollow of your wrist.
“I thought…” He doesn’t finish the sentence.
“It was close.” You tell him, your voice trembling just a little when you think of the implements neatly set out on the coffee table in the next room. “It had to end sometime, and this was the only way.”
You’re right, of course. Nicole was relentless, she would never have stopped her pursuit. She would have chased you to the ends of the earth. He had wondered what would happen when you tired of the game and now, he has his answer.
He squeezes your hand gently. It grounds you in the moment, reminding you that you’re safe.  That the man you love is right here and the monster that kept you apart is dead. Bobby tilts his head towards the body bag before he murmurs.
“I’m just glad it wasn’t you.”
Love Bobby? Don’t miss any of his stories by joining the taglist here.

👋🏽 Hi. How about Sokka for the super cool headcanon list?
Sokka:
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod: There Goes My Baby- Charlie Wilson, Levitating- Dua Lipa (this is specifically on his workout playlist), Yeah! Usher
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep – where they’re not supposed to: Pretty much anywhere. When Sokka wants to sleep, he just will. He once decided it was too much work to actually get in his bed, so he fell asleep on his bedroom floor
the game they'd destroy everyone else at: Battleship. And he takes it seriously, too. He has an almost scary ability to tell where his opponent has set up their ships.
the emoticon they’d use most often: 🤣
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep He gets irrationally grouchy. Anything will set him off. He has yelled at friends for breathing too loud.
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever. He tells everyone it's black coffee, but he really loves a good flavored latte. Pumpkin spice, gingerbread, mocha. You name it, he has them ranked on a list.
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump: Fishing. And by that he means going to stare out over water with a fishing pole in his hand. He's not actually trying to fish, but to his frustration, this is when he catches his biggest ones.
what they wanted to be when they grew up: In universe, the best warrior and hunter in the tribe. In a universe where he can challenge friends to Battleship, an engineer
their favorite kind of weather: Cold and snowy. The colder the better.
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?): He's a terrible singer, but he leans so hard into his singing, he's entertaining to watch.
how/what they like to draw or doodle: He makes very intricate, random seeming designs, but the end results are beautiful. Like a Jackson Pollock with lines instead of spatters.

@hcavcnswept / lyric starter. roman candle ( ft. emma pollock) - dry the river.
"it doesn't mean i'm uncertain just afraid." charlie tended to ... do this when he got close to someone. he was so uncertain of how to act when around someone that he cared for, someone that he liked. caelum was so nice and kind and cute and it made charlie feel all warm inside, but with that it also brought along that feeling of dread that he was going to fuck it all up. so he's trying his best to explain why he had grown so quiet, but it's hard.

Mean Spirited (2022)
"When two estranged friends reconnect, things buried deep down are bound to surface. Wannabe famous vlogger Andrew Castellano sets off for a weekend at the mountain cottage of his former friend-turned famous actor Bryce. Andy has decided to bury the hatchet, but he isn't quite himself anymore."
Coming from First-Names Films, and director Jeffrey Ryan, this is a brand new found-footage horror film currently doing the rounds of movie festivals. The movie world has a spotty history with found-footage films, from The Blair Witch Project to Cloverfield, and every film in between. Going into this film I had to temper my expectations due to previous disappointments.
I have come out the other side happy to have spent the time watching this rather fun film. Some film makers try to use a low budget camera style to mask a lack of substance in the story. Jeffrey Ryan and his team have brought us a film entirely from the point of view of a vlogger, and the style of the film fits this perfectly. Multiple cameras used by the vloggers highlight different parts of the story really well. The use of a dashcam to show hidden moments we wouldn't normally have seen was a really good move, and provided a couple of my personal favourite moments.
Filming on location in the Poconos, among abandoned hotels, haunted houses and waterfalls, was an inspired choice as it really added to the total atmosphere of the movie. Instead of making me want to avoid the area though this film, as creepy and at times disturbing as it is, has actually made me want to go. I'm not sure what that says about me.....
The cast is great. I felt connected to most of them, maybe because I recognised a part of most of them within myself. I like that in a film. I like being able to understand characters by looking at myself, even if only a small part.
Director Jeffrey Ryan plays Bryce, aka Thunderman, an actor who used to run a video prank channel with Andy, played by Will Madden. Bryce walked away from Andy and the channel with no explanation and the movie is Andy's attempt to find out why, and maybe get a measure of revenge. Ryan plays Bryce as a brash, seemingly ego-driven, minor "celebrity" and he plays it really well. He is utterly believable in the role.
Madden's Andy is a far less famous blogger, and it is clear from the start that he is jealous of Bryce's success. Madden plays the two sides of his character, Andy and the Amazing Andy, superbly. He switches between them with an apparent ease, Amazing in front of the camera and plain old jealous Andy 'off' camera. Watching a character based on the style of similar vloggers I have watched myself, and seeing the dichotomy within that character was very much an intriguing experience. Madden is an interesting performer and I definitely think I'd like to watch him again.
The rest of the main cast, Michelle Veintimilla, Daniel Rashid, Maria Decotis and Charlie Pollock, round out the film really well. Each adding a vital part to the story. Every performance had some awesome moments and the whole cast should be very happy with this film.
Overall this is a film that does exactly what you expect it to do. It's a found footage horror film, but instead of just filmed footage on a phone or camera it has the twist of being filmed specifically for a YouTube style channel. Is it a film that is going to utterly change the found footage genre? No, but it is still significantly better than the vast majority of other found footage films I've seen. I certainty enjoyed it more than I ever enjoyed The Blair Witch Project. It's getting a solidly well deserved 7.5/10, with a recommendation to watch it when it hits V.O.D. on Apple TV, VUDU, Amazon, Comcast OnDemand, and Verizon from Feb 7.
Without specific spoilers, I was very happy with the way it ended. Make sure you watch all the way to the end.
