SOUNDS
Orange Milk
Founded by Seth Graham and Keith Rankin in 2011
Based in Ohio
computer spiritual, some interdimensional space shit, rejected game music, i guess like pop?
“I'm not sure if I could sit here and describe in plain English what I value in music and art. I could try, but it would be jumbled and incoherent — I guess I still need to work on being able to verbalize it? I do think there's a core reaction, almost instinct that kicks in when you hear something that aligns with your values. We have our genetics, and our experiences working in the shadows — every piece of music we've listened to and absorbed, every song that arbitrarily stuck with a particular mood or disposition at a particular age, that went on to shape our perception of what's good and what's bad. Every time we hear a combination of notes or a particular timbre, our entire human experience comes into play, and our current state of valuation is almost instantly transposed onto someone else's.”
Once again, we have a label founded by some dudes who wanted to put out their own shit, but also wanted to give platform to the type of music they think deserves it. It's hard to pin down Orange Milk's sound, as there doesn't seem to be any strong connective thread, apart perhaps from “its uncanny abilty to drop complex, unique, and emotive releases with break” with “surreal and playful presentation in both the music and the out-of-this-world artwork.”
And damn, its some good artwork. Another recurring theme with a lot of these labels is how much effort is put into creating a cohesive package in which the artwork complements the music and can honestly stand strong in its own right. Its vibe is the closest to “aesthetic” I have come across (i.e. playing with old ass 3-d rendering shit, emojis, hyper-emotions), but it's been doing it longer and with more depth it seems than most of the shit reblogged on tumblr.
As for the music where do I fucking start? I know I keep saying when I survey a label that every release is worth exploring, but here again, ya, every release is worth exploring. More so than past labels tho you really don't know what to expect going into an Orange Milk release. Shit can veer toward pop but also some more standard synth explorations, but also just some straight up weird shit that is indescribable. But tbh most of it sounds like a weird virtual reality, an imagined hole in dimensions, a bad simulation. And so forth.
Based on the one thing I read by one of the founders they seem like hella nice and relatable dudes. No pretension about the seemingly huge concepts they're exploring, just pure joy and wonder.
Also I own Smuggled by Ventla and its fun to play and have your friends describe what the world around them is like.

Wounded Knife May Tape Batch
Charles Barabé / Roadside Picnic - National House Milk [Wounded Knife]
‘The second collaborative effort from Canada’s Charles Barabé and Britain’s Justin Wiggan aka Roadside Picnic is probably one of the most musically dense records amongst all Wounded Knife releases. National House Milk is entertainingly misleading in its abstract compositions which is no surprise considering the musical background of both artists (check their excellent releases on labels like 905 Tapes, A Giant Fern, Tymbal Tapes, Jehu & Chinaman... Not to mention Barabé's own La Cohu); the distant noisy soundscapes energized by frantic drum machine beats, odd samples of unknown origin and swirling digital textures form a focused and concise album.’
--from press release
Amulets - In Flux [Wounded Knife]
‘Austin-based audio and visual artist Randall Taylor explores the vast areas of his tension filled ambient/drone music by constantly changing and evolving both emotionally and technically. His renowned "suitcase of drone" is not only a collection of sound equipment but also an instrument on its own, a mechanical organism fueled by degrading tape loops intertwined with delay feedbacks. On In Flux the effect is as astonishing as always, leaving no doubt that Amulets is one of the most ingenious creators in the cassette community.’
--from press release
Lake Mary / Nathan Wheeler - Also [Wounded Knife]
‘Also is the second Lake Mary cassette released by Wounded Knife and at the same time the second album where no guitar was used (at least in the common way). Here Chaz Prymek teamed up with Nathan Wheeler, member of the "live band" incarnation of LM: Lake Mary & the Ranch Family Band. Their modest but inspiring approach resulted in two side-long compositions combining elements of classical, minimalist drones and gentle synthesizer waves - just two guys deeply inspired by Charlemagne Palestine, La Monte Young and all the other minimalist masters chilling out in a forest cabin. The perfect uplifting record.’
--from press release
Sébastien Branche / Miguel A. García / Wojtek Kurek / Mateusz Wysocki - Harigams [Wounded Knife]
‘When French saxophonist Sébastien Branche and Basque sound artist Miguel A. García were playing shows all around Europe in 2015, the latter made a proposal to Polish musicians Wojtek Kurek (Paper Cuts, Warten) and Mateusz Wysocki (Fischerle, Bouchons D'oreilles) to meet and record an improvised session during their visit in Warsaw, Poland. Their meeting gave birth to Harigams, a unique piece comprised of precise electro-acoustic sound crafting.’

Huh? by Charles Barabé & Wether - more from Wether, who will be part of tonight’s Overnight show on WVUD 91.3 FM (1-3 AM)
Barabé and Wether put hearty portions of musical approaches from the last century into a blender for this gorgeous collaged collaboration. And then they recorded the blender. With Huh?, electroacoustic and musique concrete establish friendships with melancholy melodies and found sounds. This suite of untitled pieces evokes stunning cinematic depths across two sides of heavy vibes and fun surprises.
Charles Barabé & Wether (Mike Haley): synths, field recordings, kitchen machinery, found sounds. Recorded between October 2014 and May 2015 in Quebec and Delaware.
