Thank you for the ask @chaniis-atlantis! ❤️️ I spoke about this story which has a title now previously here and here (with the second one being decently long) and chapter 2 was posted on AO3 yesterday! /end plug

What I want to talk about today - or more accurately what I want to ramble about I guess - is how very similar the trio of Sheppard, Todd and Kolya are to each other! Shepherd would like to think that he's better than both of them and the mask he presents to the world certainly gives that impression to others, but who he is deep down inside… He knows with an uncomfortable amount of clarity that he has the capacity to be a bad guy, a piece of self-knowledge that can only come about from having been the bad guy in the past and finding he enjoys it. After all the only thing he's scared of is himself!

As for Todd, he's obviously been raised into Wraithdom - which you could compare in a way to a cult but that's an entirely different conversation and I expect this response is going to get long enough already 💀 - and now he wants to stop the killing as he's been offered a better option. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's trying to meet Sheppard halfway out of the goodness of his heart! If the treatment to allow Wraith to regain the use of their childhood digestive systems failed, he would 100% continue killing. Every living thing must eat indeed!

Kolya embodies some of both Sheppard's and Todd's best and worst traits. He's quick witted, a good tactician, a fine warrior, a ruthless bastard, but he also has their arrogance and inbuilt mistrust of others. They all hate each other because when they look at each other they see what they themselves could be.

Sheppard looks at Todd and he could be a killer. He looks at Kolya and he could be a psychopath (note: I am not using that term accurately, just in Sheppard's mind from his POV).

Todd looks at Sheppard and just straight up sees himself because I don't think Todd is ashamed of who or what he is. He recognises the importance of the gene therapy to continue the existence of his species, but he doesn't feel a great sense of guilt from the many many many people he has killed because that's just what he had to do to survive. The other option was death and he was never going to roll over and just take that. When Todd looks at Kolya I think he sees what Sheppard has the potential to become: bitter and petty while still retaining all of the qualities that make him dangerous and fascinating and attractive. I think he worries that one day Sheppard will "wake up" and come to hate all Wraith just as everyone else does and he'll lose him to a version of Kolya.

Kolya looks at Todd and sees tens of thousands of years of his people's oppression, murder and culling, being driven underground and probably having to put quite strict rules on things like having kids down there because there's only so much space to expand into, so even out from under the immediate watchful eyes of the Wraith they're still limited by their existence. So there's never any way in hell that Kolya and Todd could ever find a middle ground, something of which I don't blame either one for given what the other has put them through.

Now when Kolya looks at Sheppard… The intricacies of what he sees: there's hope for Pegasus, there's hope for the Genii people, so he does want Sheppard to succeed. But there's also a fair amount of jealousy that Sheppard is the one who's getting to be the big hero and save Pegasus and Kolya feels like that should be him, that he's put in enough of his blood, sweat and tears, and his contribution isn't being recognised. I don't know whether this line was actually in the show or just in my head but "if I were a younger man" really strikes a chord with me over how Kolya and Sheppard interact from Kolya's side of things.

Awkward Conversations (SGA Todd/Sheppard Lorne/Kenny (Bonewhite) Lorne heaves a deep sigh of relief as he crosses the event horizon and flies into the Atlantis Control center.

Freefall (SGA AU Bug;john/Todd) It is dark in the storage room where John sleeps.

Eye of the Storm (SGA Sheppard/Todd) Guide sprints down the corridors of the Starborn Glory towards the dart bay, the humans only a few steps behind him.

Mercy (SGA Sheppard + Todd) The sun sparkles across San Francisco Bay, the waves lapping against the shore.

Ivory (SGA Lorne/Kenny|Bonewhite) Evan stands in the sunny meadow, a brush in hand and feels the tension leave his muscles as he relaxes into his project.

Chained (SGA AU Bug;John/Todd) “Dr. Weir,” the voice coming through the radio is harsh and commanding.

Tempest (SGA Sheppard/Todd) (This story has two starting lines, one a quote from the viewpoint character, and one the first line of story, so I included them both.) "I don’t know why you need my statement on this Sam." It started out like a normal day on Atlantis.

Patterns: Almost all of them start with an establishing shot, naming both a viewpoint character and an activity they are engaging in. Tempest and Mercy are a little weak in this area as they were my first two writing projects in several years and I was a little rusty. Freefall and Chained both start with a touch of unpleasantness to invoke the darker, harsher version of Atlantis they take place on.

I think for Mercy, Tempest and Ivory I was probably trying to mimic the set dressing for an episode by setting up an "establishing shot." Retrospectively, I would retool them a little.

Most of my mutuals have already been tagged (I think), so I'll leave it open to anyone who wants to give it a shot.

About me

When did you start writing?

Sixth grade, otherwise around 10/11? I think that's how old I was in sixth grade lol.

Are there different genres or themes you enjoy reading other than the ones you write?

Absolutely! I write mostly romance and fantasy/sci fi, but I love most genres. Murder mysteries are a particular favorite of mine.

Is there an author you want to emulate, or are compared to often?

Not a clue. I read voraciously as a child until college, and just now I'm starting to pick the habit back up again-which is to say I couldn't tell you what authors inspired me as a kid and I'm not familiar enough with any authors I'm reading now to tell you what I want to emulate. No one has compared my writing to anyone that I know of.

Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?

I mostly write on the pc, which is in our office. The desk is not deep enough to my liking but the chair is comfy. Perry's got a bunch of little knickknacks all around the monitor (since it's his side of the desk technically) and I've got a bunch of shelves full of decorations, collectables, so forth, along the wall/in the shelves that connect to the desk.

What’s your most effective way to muster up a muse?

Engage with the material that first sparked inspiration over and over and over again. This keeps the ideas flowing and often brings about dreams of said material, which help greatly.

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and/or places you write about?

Hahahahahaha. Ha. Yeah, you could say that.

Are there any reoccurring themes in your writing? If so, do they surprise you?

Yes and no. See the question above.

Characters

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character?

You're asking me to pick a favorite child 😩 Ok. I'll talk about Alice bc I'm working on the sga bridgerton!au. Alice's backstory isn't fully figured out, I'm debating if she'll be adopted or not. I know for sure her relationship with her family is terrible and that's why she was so willing to join the Atlantis expedition despite no guarantee of return. She never learned how to balance work and life, thus leading to a rather isolated adulthood where she spent most of her time in the lab. But hey, her work was well acclaimed and got her to the Pegasus galaxy. Her personality has really come through while working on this bridgerton!au fic. She's terribly anxious, but aware of that anxiety having little logic behind it, so a lot of her actions are based on being brave despite being terrified. She's very courageous in that sense. I'd say her biggest arc (at least in the bridgerton!au) is learning how to voice her wants. She's good at speaking up for others but not so much for herself. Also genderweird feminine presenting chubby scientist in 2000's woo.

Which of your characters would you be friends with in real life?

I can't deicde if it'd be a "get along swell because they are so similar" or a "so alike they can't stand each other" situation with my fandom ocs tbh. I think I might befriend Anya and Awyn, but Alice might upset me too much lol. I can say, for my Angel and Death characters from an original work of mine, they would be my friends.

Which characters would you dislike the most of you met them?

Again, not sure. Hard to tell.

Tell me about the process of coming up with your characters?

I watch a show I like a character I make a sona/insert/version of myself I think would fit well in that world, make a cool story, and be a good ship with the character I like. Then the character blooms as I write.

Do you notice any reoccurring themes/traits in your characters?

Parental issues, adoption abandonment, cults. Yeah. There's a few.

How do you picture your characters?

I usually draw them! :D

My writing

What’s your reason for writing?

Self expression, I can do it better (fix-it-fics), and entertainment. The process of writing itself is very enjoyable for me.

Is there any specific comment or type of comment from readers that you find particularly motivating?

When readers pick up on foreshadowing and hints I'm putting down, when they leave behind long "book reports," as I call them, detailing narrative devices/thematic beats/etc., and when they tell me outright how excited they are to read more of the story. But literally any comment is like gold to me.

How do you want to be thought about by your readers?

Uhh. I've never thought of this before. I hope they enjoy my writing? And my ocs? I wouldn't mind being thought of as the person to go to with oc thoughts-not even about my own but anyones. I love ocs. I love seeing someone new I get to learn all about thrown into a world with all these characters I love. It's such a fun thing.

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

I'm not insecure with my writing lol. Art school really took the brunt of that one. But for a technical answer, I'd say character dynamics? Like. I'm good at a lot of things, but I think recently my ability to emphasize the emotions two characters have for each other (whatever those may be) has improved immensely.

Have you been told what is your greatest strength as a writer is by others?

I've been told I capture individual character voice's rather well. The trick, imo, is once you have heard the character speak enough that you can hear their voice in your head, you can tell when dialogue fits them or not. (obviously this goes for mediums where there is an aloud voice to hear lol.)

How do you feel about your own writing?

I love it! I'm a good writer and I'm always improving.

If you were the last person on earth, would you still write?

Yep. Re-reading my writing is fun!

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, do you write purely for yourself, or is it a mix of both?

Might be a mix? When I have an audience in mind (like for trades, gifts, and friends who are hype about wips I share with them) I tend to think past myself into bigger ideas. I'm still writing what I want to read, but I'm just giving more thought about the execution lol.

Last book you enjoyed: the last actual physical book i read and enjoyed was probably the ballad of songbirds and snakes by suzanne collins, the prequel to the hunger games trilogy. absolutely incredible 10/10 i loved it

Favourite thing to cook/bake: i hate cooking and baking 😅 i guess a crock pot stew cause i can dump everything in a pot, turn it on low for 8 hours and call it a day 😂

Favourite craft to do in your free time: does writing count as a craft? if it does then writing 😂 if not uhhhh idk i spend most of my free time reading or writing lately

Most niche dislike: this is a good question! corporate pet retail i think honesty. i've been working in the pet industry over 5 years and it's actually super disgusting how common neglect and abuse is. fuck petsmart and petland and any other retail store that sells live animals! adopt don't shop!!!

Opinion on circuses: i've never gone to one but i'm against most things that involve animal captivity so i'm gonna say a vague negative opinion

SGA Fic: Seasonality (Todd/John Sheppard; Explicit; 400 words)

Summary: Deep down, John knows he could stop this. But he doesn't want to.

Notes: What if Wraith went into seasonal ruts and John and Todd met up for them? This is 100% the result of a chat with @chaos-monkeyy, @chaniis-atlantis and @colonelshepparrrrd about Wraith biology, the implications of seasonal rutting, the hidden effects of John's Iratus bug history, and other good stuff. Thank you :)

Snippet: Deep down, John knows he could stop this, could stop whatever fucked up biology is changing inside him, settling in a little more each time he and Todd meet for whatever this is. He could ignore Todd's call - hidden, coded, just for him and increasingly anticipated by something internal, an awareness that the time is coming, is closer, is now.

He could reply, "Screw you, Todd," and not show up, not make noises about needing some leave time before taking off, leaving Atlantis far behind, temporary but unequivocal.

Currently watching: Honestly? Nothing. I'm always in a state of "going to watch more Stargate," and I'm about to start season 3 of Star Trek TOS and DS9 in my rewatch of each, but I haven't had the time and energy I want to give to it.

Currently obsessed with: Other than boring things like money (because everything is expensive and RL is annoying) though obsessed is the wrong word, more like stressed, I'm going to say the podfic of iridan's "A Simple Thing." Every time Din is like "oh Boba is cool, I don't know how to define this feeling, we're friends right?" and then Boba has a moment where he dies a little and is just like "Sure, we're friends I won't burden you with the fact that my feelings are deeper than that," and then both of them keep discovering that the things they assumed about the other are completely wrong and they have to come back to the drawing board like, "well this relationship is not as contained as previously thought and is leaking into our working relationship," and then someone calls Din Boba's loyal dog massiff and Din's just like "that's fair, I don't mind it at all," or when anyone insults Boba and Din is like "STFU right NOW or I'm gonna cut a bitch," I'm literally just leaning my head back and screaming. I'm not usually someone who listens to books but this podfic is fantastic, especially because when I read (or especially reread) something I tend to skip over things, especially scenes I know the resolution of (like most fight scenes), but listening to it I have to listen to all of it and I can't skip ahead so I'm finding things I hadn't noticed about the fic before. Every chapter is like 1-2 hours long, it's a mini-vacation I give myself to sit back and listen. 💕💕💕💕

So excited I just finished a full chapter draft for the next chapter of "Customary" (my Sam/Todd fic) and the last 6 sentences are way cleaner than the earlier parts of the chapter, so I don't mind sharing them 😂

His eyes glow. “I would like to stay,” he allows. He speaks easily and she recalls when he’d hesitated before voicing any desire.  She nods, and steps back into her bedroom.  The bed is smaller- this is not a room where she ever intended to have company- but he fits his long body into one half of it easily. When she lies down he slides toward her, pressing his forehead against her shoulder again. Sam hums acknowledgment of his movement and affirmation of his touch, and falls asleep so quickly she remembers nothing more.

Ivory Fanged (Hawksong/Kiesha'ra). So Hawksong is a YA novel about shapeshifters, where basically the hawk queen marries the snake king to end the generational war between their peoples. I inserted Rikki Tikki Tavi into the middle of that, so the hawk queen has to think extra hard about if she really wants to keep her promise now that she has legitimate, cobra-killing back up, and I also redeemed my favorite side character from a pointless canon death. This fic really was only supposed to be one chapter, but it became a lot more, and I love it. ❤️

Warrantable (SGA). This is part 2 of the "hart" series which is basically a single h/c fic told in 3 parts. Part 1 is the hurt, part 3 is the comfort, and part 2 here is my favorite part because it's the turn, where the two start to mingle.

A Dram of Sweet Is Worth a Pound of Sorrow (SGA). One of my driving forces in the "my name forevermore" series, as soon as I figured out the plot of "Nemo," was getting "Michael" the time and space to work through enough of his baggage to get a "happy" ending, so I have a lot of personal attachment to this fic.

With True Love and Brotherhood (SGA). I feel like this story encapsulates a lot of the themes I tend to explore in my fics but in a smaller, more contained story than the ones that end up becoming sprawling series.

Your Prison is Walking through This World All Alone (Marvel). As done as I am with the mcu this fic still contains so many of the things I loved about marvel: frostiron, Thor & Loki being bros, Storm: goddess and queen, Nightcrawler cameos, Bruce being rumpled, and my own specific take on the White Phoenix of the Crown based on a single panel of a comic I read 20 years ago.

From my Baldur's Gate 3 Tav (Astur Vuldal)/Astarion Fic. Still needs to be edited lol.

Gale remained curled up in the spot Lae’zel had left him and Wyll staggered to his own tent after many attempts to reassure Astur all was fine, leaving the elf alone to stare at the firelight remembering Astarion’s lips against her skin. She lifted a hand to her ear, to the spot where his lips brushed her, and bit her own at the unfamiliar feelings burning in her chest.
