[011619 - Vogue] The Front-Row K-Pop Stars To Look Out For At The AW19 Shows

As the buzz builds around the impending AW19 fashion month, a consistent theme over the past few seasons has been that the spotlight has shifted from the runway to the front row. And who’s been stealing the show? K-pop stars.

The power of the front row has always been undeniably apparent. A-list celebrity appearances and, of course, royal appearances at a show boost a brand’s visibility. K-pop stars, though not of royal status, have, over the years, come closer to the title of fashion royalty - an individual K-pop star can have millions of followers on Instagram and their die-hard fans take devotion to extremes. K-pop stars are breaking hearts, the internet and brand sales all at once with their attendances at shows, a few even acting as ambassadors for houses such as Chanel.

And rightly so. Their approach and exhibition of fashion is consistently fearless, yet made to look effortless, experimental but sophisticated. Whether it's on the front row, the red carpet, in their music videos or a trip to the airport, K-pop stars have become fashion moguls. Here, Vogue introduces the K-pop stars you can expect to see this season.

G-Dragon

As the K-pop group BIGBANG leader, solo artist, Chanel ambassador, friend of Karl Lagerfeldand other designers such as Jeremy Scott, it would be easy to do an entire gallery on G-Dragon alone. He has a wealth of eye-watering fashion looks and is a fashion mogul in his own right, having collaborated with designers such as Giuseppe Zanotti, Raf Simons and Vetements, not to mention his own label, PeaceMinusOne. You can never predict what he’ll do or wear next, making it difficult to define his style in terms of brand, theme or trend.

He’s eccentric, fashion-forward and daring with his style, often paying tribute to designers or taking looks quite literally off the catwalk as he gets dibs on runway pieces from collections before they’ve even debuted. What he does consistently is own a confidence in pushing boundaries and borrowing from women’s collections. Chanel is a regular of his. He transforms each piece – the iconic tweed jacket, the Gabrielle bag, a statement jewellery piece or full look - and makes it his own. Whether it’s a pink Celine coat or a Saint Laurent evening jacket, G-Dragon has become an icon of sorts. No doubt he’ll be making appearances at shows including Chanel, Celine and Moschino.

Taeyang

If Hedi Slimane had a certain type of person in mind to wear his designs, it’s Taeyang, G-Dragon's fellow BIGBANG band member and fashion week attendee. (They frequently attend Paris and, of course, Seoul Fashion Week together.) Taeyang is a regular at Chanel shows and has attended Paris Fashion Week since 2013, sitting at shows such as Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Kris Van Assche, Lanvin, Kenzo, and Juun.J. He even had a collaboration with Fendi for his 2017 Young Bae streetwear capsule collection. His style, however, is slightly easier to pin down than his bandmate. Taeyang fits Slimane’s cool, punk, grunge yet sleek aesthetic as he often wears darker colours and slim-fitted jackets and trousers. He pulls off the look by giving it a sense of his own edge. He also ventures into streetwear, looser-fit looks, and experiments with bolder colours, textures and sizes. The stage sees Taeyang’s best fashion moments as he doesn’t shy away from making a statement. His boldest look includes a matching gold sequin jacket and trousers (worn with nothing underneath, of course).

Chanel’s robots are your new fashion overlords

Chanel took to the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday to show off its tech-inspired, Spring-Summer 2017 collection (yes, they’re already that much cooler than you).

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld described it as an exercise in “intimate technology.” Here’s what we know for sure: Lagerfeld has been watching a lot of Daft Punk film clips, and next month’s fashion magazines are going to be filled with “pixelated tweed.”

The ready-to-wear collection was shown off in Chanel’s customary Paris runway venue, the Grand Palais. But this time the set was converted into a giant data center, reminiscent of a “Silicon Valley” set-piece (if T. J. Miller was a 5 foot 10 model with porcelain skin). Even the Ethernet cables were on-trend.

As Chanel describes it, the show started with “robots from an unknown future” — a future where artificial intelligence has worked out how to perfectly emulate your Great Aunt Hilda’s favourite Sunday twinset.

What followed was lashings of Tron-like neon, wraparound sunglasses and what Chanel is calling “caps on the side,” mixed with label staples like heavy chain, quilted leather camellia motifs and tweed.

There were even light-up handbags as well as a little robot clutch, complete with working circuit board.

WE UNDERSTAND WHY YOU’RE CONFUSED. THE CROPPED JACKETS SAY “PRINCESS GRACE” BUT THE SIDEWAYS CAPS SAY “FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR.”

You aren’t meant to understand fashion, you simply receive it with humility from the Great Karl, as he descends his crystal staircase every quarter, whether it be in New York, London, Milan or Paris, to tell you what to wear.
