Philippines' John Ornido, Cambodia's Chan Rothana to headline Neak Leng Kun tournament in Phnom Penh
Professional mixed martial artist John McLeary Ornido, 20, of the Philippines will compete in a bokator (ល្បុក្កតោ) tournament in Phnom Penh, Cambodia before the year ends. It is the second event of Neak Leng Kun, which promotes Khmer martial arts. Also called Kun Lbokator and Kun Bokator, bokator is one of the oldest fighting systems existing in the world. In 2022, it was inscribed on the…

Why did you start kickboxing?
When I was a kid, I would go with my father to watch him train boxers. I was not interested in it, but when my family had money problems my father asked me to stop going to school and start training [at the age of 16]. When I started training, I did not have a goal of becoming a great boxer.
How much money are you making these days?
It depends on the number of students that come to train at my gym [Selapak in Phnom Penh], but usually about $500 a month from that. For one fight against another Khmer boxer, the winner makes about $100. Fighting against a Thai boxer, you can make $300 or $400 per match. For One Championship, I can make from $1,000 to $1,500 per fight, plus $500 for the winner.
Would you recommend boxing as a career?
I always try to get young people involved in the sport and to train them. But even though my students seem to like it, once they get in the ring they quit. The most important thing is that if you know it’s what you want, you can make enough money. If I didn’t train for this kind of sport I would not be who I am today. My fame comes from sports.
Along with football star Chan Vathanaka and Taekwondo champ Sorn Seavmey, you are one of the few athletes in Cambodia who have commercial sponsors. Do you think companies are starting to see sports as a marketing vehicle?
I hope that companies will become more interested in sponsoring athletes, but my friend has had to go out to try to find sponsors for me. If athletes do not have help finding sponsors it will be difficult – for me, if I didn’t have help I don’t think I would have any. We are not like Vathanaka and [pop singer] Preap Sovath. The companies will go to find them.
A few Cambodian kickboxers have tested the waters of international mixed martial arts with One Championship. Do you think professional fighting is becoming a more attractive career?
I think fighting in Cambodia is gaining and developing more, and we can say it’s better. But I have also seen some things that need to be improved. In Thailand, they send boxers to fight in China, Korea, Japan and Europe. Cambodia only sends some boxers to fight in Thailand. The [Cambodian Boxing] Federation needs to work on this issue.
What advice would you offer to a young fighter who wants to be where you are?
To be successful in fighting, we need to learn about our role; we have to be respectful to those all around us and not be arrogant. You have to have a schedule and train at least three times a day. We have to be part of a team for support and training and technique. For me, I have one team for mixed martial arts and one for kickboxing.

Chan Rothana Battles For Cambodia At ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY
Every professional fighter has a motivation behind what they do. To take part in such a mentally and physically demanding sport, you have to be driven. When Chan Rothana takes to the ONE Championship cage on 21 April in Manila, he'll be heading into battle for his country, his family, and his art.
The Cambodian athlete has endured hardships that most will never know, including being born in a refugee camp during the infamous and brutal civil war in his home nation. The next generation of Cambodians, Chan included, want to prove that their country is past its troubles, and that there's more to their country than memories of war and destruction.
Though he was 6 years old by the time he finally got to make it home, Chan knew that he would never leave again.
"I realized the beauty of my culture and the horror of the civil war. Now our country is changing, war is in the past, and I want to show that Cambodia is once again a great country like it was."
Throughout the war, and with the terrible genocide that accompanied it, the regime sought to erase certain people and their heritage from Cambodia's history books. Part of that involved eradicating the martial arts they practiced. Most were outlawed, with their practitioners killed or jailed.
Chan's father, one of only two grand masters, survived, and made it his aim to revive the Khmer martial art of Yutakhun Khom, and that's another factor that fuels his son's journey.
It was Chan’s enthusiasm for this mission which led him to ONE Championship, after being on the brink of retirement to focus on teaching. When he heard the promotion was heading to his homeland, he saw it as a huge opportunity to use the platform to raise awareness for his martial heritage.
That was in 2014, and now Chan has five bouts to his credit in the ONE cage. With three knockout wins and his only losses coming via disqualification and decision, he has shown that his skills can contend with opponents at an elite level. Now, with the awareness and money he generates from his bouts, he seeks to improve the lives of less fortunate youths at home.
"We identify young fighters with high potential and support them, because they generally come from poor backgrounds,” revealed the Selapak coach, of the organization FightforCambodia.org.
The more success he has, and the more he can entertain the ONE Championship crowds, the more exposure and revenue he can garner to help this most noble of causes.
"MMA is a great sport, and ONE Championship a great organization that changed my life conditions," Chan stresses, and his continued success would only make things better.
On 21 April at ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY, he will be more motivated than ever for victory when he meets China's Xie Bin, and it will take something special to stop him.

Ramon Gonzales Returns To Challenge Yodsanan Sityodong At ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM
Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales has proven his karate mastery in competitions all over the world, but now the former two-time Philippine National Kyokushin karate champion is determined to exert his dominance in the MMA world.
He will get the chance to do so this coming Saturday Night, 11 March. The Filipino is scheduled to meet Yodsanan “Little Tyson” Sityodong in a catchweight bout at ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM, which takes place at Bangkok’s Impact Arena in his opponent’s home country of Thailand.
“I really want this,” the 29-year-old kyokushin black belt says. “I want to fight and win.”
Defeating Sityodong will not be an easy task, however. He is an ex-Muay Thai competitor and a former WBA Super Featherweight World Champion who reigned from 2002 through 2005.
After moving to Singapore to teach at Evolve MMA in 2009, Little Tyson — nicknamed that for his awesome knockout power — has fought sporadically in professional MMA. He holds a 2-1 record, and won his last bout against Chrech Kosal at the company’s last Bangkok show, ONE: KINGDOM OF CHAMPIONS, last May.
“When I knew that my opponent is a boxing champion and a Muay Thai fighter, I just told myself that a fight is a fight and anything can happen. I do not know anything else about him because I do not have time for him,” Gonzales says, smiling.
Gonzales, who was originally born in the Matacon barangay of the Philippines’ Bicol Region, was raised by his grandma in Manila, and dabbled in martial arts during high school. He learned taekwondo in 2001, and then transitioned into Kyokushin the following year.
He immediately felt a connection with the karate discipline, proclaiming: “the martial art Kyokushin is my life!”
“The Bicolano” dedicated his life mastering the art, en route to becoming the 2007 and 2009 National Kyokushin karate champion in the Philippines.
Upon winning the title a second time, he decided to test his skills in the cage, and made his professional MMA debut later that August in a local Filipino promotion. He won the fight in 43 seconds, but took an indefinite hiatus from the sport, as his sensei wanted him to focus on upcoming international Kyokushin tournaments.
The allure of MMA would not keep him away for long. In 2015, he signed with ONE Championship because he inevitably wanted to challenge himself. That test cam in the form of Kun Khmer specialist Chan Rothana at ONE: AGE OF CHAMPIONS almost two years ago. It was an exciting fight, but he tapped out to a rear-naked choke seconds before the first round concluded.
“That fight was a fight to remember for me,” he says. “Like my coach always tells me, I did not lose in that fight. I learned from it.”
One thing Gonzales certainly learned is that he does not want to lose again. Now, with more knowledge and experience under his belt, he draws Sityodong this coming Saturday Night at ONE: WARRIOR KINGDOM.
Though it has been two years since he last fought inside the cage, Gonzales is shaking off whatever rust there is so he can get back on the winning track.
“All I can say is,” he begins, “I will bring out my best once the cage door closes.”

ONE Super Series World Champions Kryklia, Nong-O Dominate At ONE: COLLISION COURSE
ONE Championship’s ONE: COLLISION COURSE featured explosive mixed martial arts action that saw the emergence of a new flyweight contender and the return of two dangerous Russians – but it was the show’s ONE Super Series headliners that left fans in awe on Friday night.
In the main event, Roman Kryklia put on a striking masterclass to defend his ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Title against Andrei “Mister KO” Stoica at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Across five rounds, Kryklia used his long reach to pelt Stoica with jabs and rights from the outside, before lunging in with stinging body hooks and chin-touching knees.
From the outside, he sent high kicks at Stoica’s head, wobbling the Romanian on two occasions.
To the challenger's credit, he refused to go down despite absorbing a tremendous amount of punishment. Still, Kryklia’s output and accuracy decisively earned him the unanimous decision victory and his first World Title defense.
In the co-main event, ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao threw fire at ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai Tournament winner Rodlek PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym, knocking his compatriot out in the third round.
The bout started off as most Muay Thai matches do, with both men adjusting to the reactions of one another.
Although Rodlek was able to land clean, hard shots, Nong-O took control in the third round, where he found a way to derail “The Steel Locomotive.”
After a brief exchange by the pair of Thais, the defending World Champion sent a jab-cross combo that split Rodlek’s guard, touched his chin, and dropped the challenger for good.
Nong-O, who lives and trains in Singapore at Evolve MMA, has now produced four successful World Title defenses since winning the belt.
Full Results For ONE: COLLISION COURSE
Roman Kryklia defeats Andrei Stocia via unanimous decision (ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Title)
