kamala literally died, what, a bit over a month ago? her funeral was 2 days ago. and they're already announcing a new series.

where, yes, she is now a mutant because they want to match the mcu.

the comic is being written by sabir pirzada, a writer on the ms marvel show, and iman vellani, who plays kamala.

i really don't have high hopes for this new page for kamala. I hate that they're doing this to her, I hate that the mcu continues to affect the comics like this. if there's any sliver of hope I have, it's because of iman vellani's passion and dedication to the character.

I did make a post about Lanzing and Kelly and the fact that their writing is kind of racist. It could also be that they were unhappy that there was an editorial mandate for Kamala to be front and centre of their series because she's the most popular team member of NYX. Whatever their reasons.....there's something off about them.

But...I think people forget that the things they are being accused of are nothing new in Ms Marvel comics. G Willow Wilson used to do the same thing? She also introduced a Muslim character to solely to make him a terrorist. She introduced Kamran to highlight how absolutely terrible this brown boy was and how amazing Bruno was. Yet people think that's shattering stereotypes? It really wasn't. It's why the MCU writers that consisted of brown people refused to do her weird storyline.

Even Kamala getting told she doesn't understand oppression by white women in NYX, and not telling them to fuck off, isn't really that new. Carol manipulated Kamala into becoming a fascist during G Willow Wilson's run. And Kamala got ALL the blame from her supporting cast instead of some acknowledgment that she was being manipulated by a grown ass woman. Kamala clearly never learnt her lesson from what happened if she's acting this way as a mutant. It's not character growth if she doesn't learn from past incidents. It's her being written as a fool, consistently. It means she's still that girl who went through Terrigenesis and came out looking like Carol because she was so insecure about who she was, over 10 years later.

I was also thinking about Sooraya during Champions. Sooraya was one of the many mutant characters introduced in the early 2000s with Sophie and Laura. Yet Kamala was able to say that she didn't trust Sooraya, and that she didn't want her on HER team. Yet she allows Sophie and Laura to walk all over her MANY years later? Literally try to murder her? Meanwhile, Sooraya is a fellow Muslima and should have gotten Kamala's immediate trust because of their similar background. Why can't she be suspicious of Laura and Sophie? So essentially, what we're seeing isn't necessarily new nonsense. But I think now that Kamala is such a well established character, we need higher standards for her, and all brown people, in the comics.

Hehe I want to return the favor and ask which of YOUR blorbos (Pokemon or not, your choice) would get way into a snowball fight and which would be watching from inside, cozy and warm

Okay so let's start with the Pokemon blorbos and see how many others I remember off the top of my head after that.

Cynthia: She's a Sinnoh girl born and raised, woe to anyone who faces her on the field of snowy battle. Fortunately for the children of Eterna City, she doesn't engage in snowball fights too often. (Though she did teach Gardenia and Candice a few things) Her Garchomp, nesting for the winter in heated blankets and pillows, needs near-constant attention due to being a spoiled little shark baby. Sometimes a Luxury Ball just isn't enough.

Courtney: Team Magma is no stranger to the art of snowball fights. Each winter in Hoenn, Pokemon battles for territory and glory against Team Aqua are often substituted with elegant volleys of frigid projectiles. Courtney studies optimal formations, develops methods of constructing advanced snow forts, and brews the finest hot cocoa to keep their troops' morale up while in the trenches. Despite having long since established the rules of engagement for their winter warfare, both sides cheat. Shelly is irritatingly skilled at sabotage and subterfuge.

Guzma: The only place where snow happens naturally on Alola is on the peak of Mount Lanakila, and Guzma's specialty is Bug-types. Safe to say that he and the rest of Team Skull would be staying inside if they were ever caught in a snowstorm somehow.

Zinnia: She gets way too intense about it after Lisia teaches her the basics. Snowballs with gravel inside, snow-sludge balls aimed between the gaps in her opponents' "armor", close-quarters grappling while threatening some poor teen with an icicle dagger. Zinnia respects opponents who fight back, and enjoys the chase when they try to flee. She'd probably try to use Rayquaza to summon a hailstorm if she ever found herself on the losing side. Meanwhile Lisia got too cold after 5 minutes and went back inside to have hot cocoa with her uncle Wallace while she waits for her GF to finish annihilating the competition.

Drayden, Iris, Looker, and Drasna would all stay inside, not much more to say about them. Moving on to the non-Pokemon blorbos, beneath the cut because this post's already long.

Normally Entrapta's fine with staying inside in her furnace heated science-castle and eating mini-cookies with her hot cocoa, but if Frosta invited her to a snowball fight she'd probably find some way to enjoy it. Building some sort of automatic snowball packing machine, maybe. Unfortunately she probably couldn't use her hair as throwing arms since that'd just make her get cold even faster. Hordak definitely isn't leaving the house, his scrawny ass can barley handle autumn.

Speaking of scrawny dramatic nerds who can't handle cold temperatures, Dirk Strider is from a distant future bad ending Earth that flooded due to global warming, spending his childhood living in the ruinous seascape that used to be Texas. No way in hell that guy's staying outside once it dips below 60, maybe 50 degrees F.

You'd think Princess Rosalina would be solidly in the "Goes hard in a snowball fight" category, since she has magic telekinesis-gravity powers and her Mario Kart maps indicate that she enjoys winter weather. Only one problem: She's used to being almost entirely alone. Lumas can't pack snowballs with their tiny stub arms. Thus, Rosalina is firmly in the "enjoying hot cocoa indoors" category, likely cuddling on a couch next to Samus Aran.

Lastly, Hunter Noceda would definitely take a snowball fight way too seriously. He may or may not win, but he'll certainly have fun doing it. Willow might not have full access to her usual plant magic in a winter climate, but that won't stop her from winning.

Something I really happy about is while all three of my DA protagonists seem similar in their personalities, their flaws are pretty different.

Feril is a cocky, carefree, young girl who just wanted to learn how to fight with swords rather than be locked up in the tower and have magic be the only thing she could do. She was pretty good with her magic, a star pupil. But she didn't even care about it. She just wanted to learn swordplay. Then she gets a chance to be free, live that very dream, and then is immediately confronted with death. It's all around her. The responsibility of stopping the Blight falls primarily on her shoulders.

She becomes afraid. She doesn't really show it to her friends because she needs to be their fearless leader. But deep down, she is terrified of it all. What if she fails? What if she can't prove Loghain's treachery? Everyone is depending on her. Her hair goes white both because of the taint but also because of the huge amount of stress piling on her. On the eve of the Battle for Denerim, she's so terrified that she's going to die. She doesn't want to die. That's why she leaps at Morrigan's proposal almost immediately, but she feels awful asking Alistair to do the Dark Ritual. She feels selfish because she doesn't want to die and wants to spend the rest of her life with Alistair. She covers that fear with a cocky smile, of course, but it is deeply rooted in her.

Seth is similar in terms of jokes and slapping a smile on his face in front of danger or threats. It seems like he doesn't give a shit about anything in the world. To some, he may even seem unsympathetic, even unempathetic. But he does care. He cares so much about his friends and his family, going so far to protect Anders from everyone who would see him dead after what he did.

But Seth knows he most likely isn't going to have a long life. He's cursed with some horrible affliction that is killing him literally everyday. Without sustaining himself via blood magic, he will just die. So why would Seth let most things bother him? He appears to not care, because he thinks he's going to die anyways. He's fatalistic. He tries to hide it all behind his jokes and laughs, keeping a smile on his face for all to see. Rarely does that mask fall, in front of Varric of Anders. Only they really know the extent of Seth's depression. He toes the line of death constantly and only his friends pull him along. That depression gets worse when his sister dies, Carver goes to the Wardens, and his mother dies. The saddest people usually smile the most, and that is true for Seth Hawke.

Willow is pretty gruff at first, but she kinda warms up to all her friends. She's been through a lot. Her clan kicked her out solely because they were paranoid and thought she was some horrible omen. She was cursed and abused. A spirit came to her and possessed her. Yet, when she joins the Inquisition, Willow finds a purpose. While she doesn't necessarily like all the attention she's getting, she realizes she's now in a position of power to change the world for the better. Everything she saw in her exile, the corruption, the horrible people, the starving children, and abused. She could help everyone, show them the Chantry was a horrible thing. She starts to smile more now that she has friends. She makes jokes more often and sometimes laughs in the face of danger, too.

But she's angry. Maker, she's so angry. Willow has the shortest temper of all the protagonists. She's quick to rage and quick to engage in violence or shouting matches. Thank the Maker Josephine exists for noble delegations. Willow sees the unfairness in the world and it makes her angry, reminds her of her own abuse. She wants to change it all. Part of that rage and feeling may also come from Lailani, the spirit inside her, but it still affects her. Her short temper is well known, but so is her charity. She's helped so many people, but the world is such a horrible place that it angers her.

Laughter and smiling and jokes is something all three of my Dragon Age protagonists use to hide their deep fear, depression, and anger. All three of them put on this mask for the world because they have too. Especially for Feril and Willow who have to save the world. Seth does it more because he doesn't want to worry his friends, but also, what's the point of letting them know that he could die any moment without blood magic.

I don't know yet whether my Rook will be the same. Purple dialogue is back so they'll probably be the same on that front, but in terms of their flaw, I don't know yet. Have to see what Veilguard brings.
