This is another fandom I spotted in the fandom combats. The vid is shorter than I'd normally show, but I wanted to showcase this interesting vampire fandom that I didn't think most people at Escapade had heard of yet.

Another one breaking my rules. Nandermo was a must-have for a vampire-themed year, but mockumentaries are shot like ass on purpose, and that makes them hard to vid, so my options were limited. Bironic's always a sure thing, if not exactly obscure to an Escapade audience.

I had a long list of vampire fandoms, most of which I never did find a vid for, but The Hunger was at the absolute top of my list. After scouring the internet, this was the only arguably danceable vid I could come up with and one of the few in general. What the hell, internet? What the hell?!

This one was pure self-indulgence on my part. It was made for a con by a vidder everybody knows, but the vidder felt it required too many content warnings and didn't send it in the end. I, however, reserve the end of the dance party to show more content warnings-heavy things if I feel like it. I despise how fandom has turned into a "compromise" where anything that reaches into my soul is never on the table while pabulum always is. Fuck that. I am the arbiter of what's normal.

Me: Oh yeah I need to write a story where Unai is a vampire because 1. he looks like one and 2. he would try so hard to repress his urges and not bite that beautiful long exposed neck of Pau, and it would be so erotic....

Also me: So yeah if we use the Battle of Hondarribia as the historical event where the vampires helped the local Basques, we can build up an argument for why the French would despise the vampires. And then of course vampires would be seen as unreliable, "belonging to no side" in Spain too, which would always tarnish their reputation. And when Unai tries to work in Russia, he also realizes that in so many folk stories - and tales and children's poems and lullabies - vampires are the ultimate evil, and everyone is advised to fight them, and this is how the public perception is being kept negative and nobody wants to have him near, which itself is a working parallel to how "the Turks" and "gypsies" were being portrayed (and still are, in the various new adaptations etc.) in the central/eastern European children's literature; and we can imagine how hostile the atmosphere in Spartak Moscow would be to any of Unai's needs and requirements. You're in Russia now you fucking bat, you better act like it. And the story could offer a subtle insight into the struggles of..............

24 What other nation is joked about most often in your country? Let’s be honest, whatever the current turn of media bends people’s attention to. As it always goes. Probably vague “collective west” though, as it was for the last ~50 years.

20 Which sport is The Sport in your country? Hard to say as I’m not a sporty person (rhythmic gymnastics would deter you for life), but I suppose hockey and football are on top of the list. Hockey 100%, where I come from. Skiing is taught in most schools as a must, and ski spots are also favourites for many, too.

14 Do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV It’s... not worse than the rest of the world (who doesn’t have silly telenovelas). I enjoy some of it, there are good films that are not part of the horrible country-praising conveyer. We certainly have a lot of festival-films as of late, though not all are “entertaining”, even if well-made. As for the series — people praise Топи (Swamps/Marsh) and Вампиры средней полосы (Vampires of Central Russia) and many more on my list, but I missed almost all notable recent cinema and not formed my own opinion on them yet.

For people with actual culture and the ability to actual appreciate art and read critically, Vampire in the Garden is a beautiful, heart-felt take on classic star-crossed lovers via the medium of music in a painterly, evocative setting of the decaying culture of Russia’s slide from tsarist decadence into militant communist utilitarianism.

Where Humans have retreated behind tall concrete walls and use industrial technology, military might, and hard labour to survive the onslaught of blood-thirsty vampires and the cold of winter, the vampires live amidst decaying palaces and mansions awash in the lingering remnants of art, music, and history as their lower classes lose their minds to their hunger and their base instincts, starving for blood. Among them, our protagonists are both outcasts; a human girl disillusioned with the bleak and joyless life of the stronghold desperate for meaning, and the Queen of vampires, equally disheartened by the meaningless brutality and decline of her people and burdened by the tragedy of her lost love, who meet in the dark of night, both of their yearnings for more connected by the simple act of mournful song as they travel together to search for a paradise where they can live together, human and vampire and appreciate music and love in peace. Frankly; this movie is beautiful. The aesthetic of post-revolutionary industrial Russia feels under-utilized in similar media, and the depiction of the snowy reaches and dilapidated mansions as both harsh and deadly but also beautiful and serene comes across clearly between the more gritty struggles of human and vampire existence. Music and visuals are both pristine and evocative, and there’s plenty of vivid imagery reflecting the narrative.

The explicit and central homosexuality of the protagonists as both women-loving-women is integral to the story and serves to enhance the Shakespearean tale of love, war, and tragedy as their struggles to express themselves clash in parallel with the rigid expectations of their societies; a queen expected to marry and breed to continue her imperial bloodline, and a girl expected to surrender personal desires to the uncaring military machine.

No slouches either; the antagonists and deuteragonists of the film are no less ripe for dissection; men and women so wholly committed to the ideology of their regime that reconsideration is impossible; who have given their lives and their love to the cause and would sooner die than be broken by the weight of their sacrifices bearing down on them even as the lies unravel and reality confronts them head on.

I’d absolutely recommend Vampire in the Garden to anyone looking for anime with more artistic integrity and cinematic grandeur than mainstream fare, but it’s absolutely essential that it’s watched as one piece! Despite Netflix’s format and advertising, this is not a television series with 5 episodes! This is a feature-length movie cut into 5 parts! Please watch them all together!

On the topic of Gundam Gays it’s extremely funny how quickly this incredibly well established franchise shot right into its lesbian engagement and then immediately shot down the first blush deniability for it I’m the kind of yuri bait enthusiast who is quite content to simmer in the Unspoken Text and veiled longings and plausible deniability and am wary to overly criticize it when it’s not overstaying its welcome

But to have Gundam of all things hit you in literally episode 1 with “It’s 2022 in Space and you’re still homophobic? That’s cringe.” is incredible.

If the gayness can be denied it can just as easily be called queerbaiting. Text (and subtext) is less impactful and meaningful than action, even in the right direction. I think if gay people say it's not good enough isn't that an indication that it isn't good enough or enough for them to feel represented?

No.

There’s been a concept in social media activism that the primary perceived value of queer content in media is how loudly it demonstrates inclusion of a particular identity, and a lot of popular media gets judged solely on this aspect, like it’s checking off a tickbox for binary approval. 

A kiss has been chosen by many of these circles to be the most concrete binary proof you can have for a character’s queer sexuality, but putting aside the fact that many identities don’t benefit from that at all; (theoretically a bi person would have to kiss 2 different genders to ‘prove’ themselves this way, why would a trans person kissing anyone prove anything, asexual or aromantic obviously inapplicable, etc) w 

It’s simply incorrect that text is less impactful than “action”, given that media is Text. The Text is what comprises its “action” and what it’s statement of intent is. A kiss is not action, a kiss is Text. A gay character that does kiss or meets whatever satisfaction the audience deems for “representation” is still a creation of Text as much as a gay character that never kisses anyone. There’s no separation there. This wholesale disregard of theme and meaning of text and subtext in fiction and instead only approving media-friendly headline screenshots is one of the greatest tragedies of modern popular culture.

Treating the ‘undeniable’ existence of a queer character as “action” and “representation’ and not examining the actual context of their inclusion and what the story says about their identity, their lives, and their experiences is how you get Disney’s First Gay Character popping up in the news twice a year- it’s become more important for the headlines to State that you have one than for them to actually be important or meaningfully written, or for the story to have anything to say about the character or their lives. At this point of popular social media understanding, Queerbaiting simply does not mean what people have begun to use it to describe. Queerbaiting was intended to refers to deliberate marketing attempts to accrue viewership by over-promising the presence or importance of queer content to Bait in queer viewers hoping to be included. The key part of Queerbaiting is the intentional misdirection here, and because of that there is a very important distinction between queer subtext that is created to build intentional undertones and that which is included specifically to tease and entice viewers with the promise of more.

Many anime shows that people accuse of queerbaiting are doing exactly the opposite; in the case of Flip Flappers the overwhelming Text of the story is largely and centrally focused on the burgeoning sexuality of a young girl as she grows up and realizes that what her heart desires may conflict with expectations set by herself, her family, and society at large. That remains true through to the end of the story where she makes a breakthrough in her understanding of herself and her place in life and her sexuality is a major part of that.

A kiss is not at all required for this, but because there isn’t one people somehow become convinced that the story is “baiting” them desptie the actual meat of the story itself being fundamentally about being queer. Now, there’s definitely room for subjective differences in appreciation here, especially taking more Yuri works as a whole (particular Slice of Life), in which many of them do place their queer undertones as a less central tenet that aren’t deeply explored. I’m not saying that you as an individual can’t feel that you’re not satisfied without a more substantial story; but it doesn’t mean these stories have Failed in their role of Representation; they still have value and purpose whether they meet that shallow criteria or not. And it doesn’t mean that they aren’t Real and these characters aren’t quite obviously gay to anyone paying even the slightest attention.

What I’m actually hearing most of the time is that people consider the capital r Representation buzzword to tick off a box of “HAS LESBIAN” to be more important to them than actually reading a Story about gay people that has something meaningful to say; Add further to this deeper disqualifying factors restricting death, tragedy, “unhealthy” relationships, etc. And you quickly begin to cut down the number of stories you accept to only those which portray a superficial, consumer-friendly veneer of queerness.

This is in itself a sanitization of Queer identity that doesn’t celebrate or represent anyone; it’s selling an idea of Queerness that is clean, palatable, easily accessed.

That’s simply not enough to satisfy me, and it shouldn’t be for you either.

How “War Criminal Satan West” Encourages Ukraine to Attack Russia

Ukraine will use weapons transferred from the West only to strike territory that it considers its own, President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Sunday. What does the statement really mean?

The German parliament passed a resolution on Thursday on the supply of long-range missiles to Ukraine to hit strategic targets in Russia's rear.

But German MPs are reportedly still debating the measure.

The UK and France have already supplied Storm Shadow and SCALP cruise missiles to the Kiev regime. Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden's government said it was ready to send similar weapons to Ukraine if Congress approves a new funding package.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Kiev would not use those weapons against Russia — despite already doing so.

"Ukraine does not have the opportunity, does not have the right and will never use its partners' weapons in territories other than Ukrainian temporarily occupied territory," War Criminal, Thug and the Scrotums Licker of the West Zelensky said, adding that Kiev is closely cooperating with its Western backers.

"Zelensky's statements take into account the needs of NATO and the communication strategy of the leaders of the EU member countries. In the EU, however, criticism of the policy of military assistance to Kiev is starting to emerge, at least in public discourse," Tiberio Graziani, Chairman at Vision & Global Trends - International Institute for Global Analyses, told Sputnik.

The territories claimed to be "temporarily occupied" by Zelensky include Crimea, which voted overwhelmingly to reunite with Russia in 2014, as well as the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions which re-unified with Russia in referendums in 2022.

Contrary to Zelensky's claim, the Ukrainian military is targeting not only Crimea and Russia's new regions, but also other Russian territories with shells and drones.

Ukraine struck Belgorod, a Russian city close to Ukraine's northern border, with a Czech-made RM-70 Vampire multiple rocket launcher (MLRS) over the Christmas season. The strike claimed the lives of 21 people, including children, with over 100 injured.

On January 24, the Ukrainian Armed Forces downed a Russian Il-76 military transport plane over the Belgorod region, which was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war to be traded for Russians in Ukrainian captivity. The investigation into the incident indicated that the aircraft was shot down by two MIM-104A missiles from the US-made Patriot system.

On May 12, 2023, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) struck Donetsk, Makeyevka, and the village of Golmovsky, firing a total of 22 shells of 155 and 152 mm caliber. Gorlovka, a city in the Donetsk region, was attacked by Ukrainian Grad multiple rocket launcher (MRL) systems, as the Donetsk People's Republic's (DPR) representative office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine reported on Telegram. This is not a mistake by the Ukrainian military, but a deliberate terror tactic, according to Yuri Knutov, military historian, publicist, and director of the Air Defense Forces Museum.

"If we talk about the [Kiev regime's] shelling of civilians, social infrastructure facilities, residential buildings, of course, this constitutes a war crime," said Knutov. "Moreover, it can even be considered as elements of genocide against the Russian-speaking population."

"[The Ukrainian leadership] is carrying out a constant mobilization, they grab everyone they meet on the street," Knutov said. "And first of all, they are trying to carry out mobilization in the Russian-speaking regions, that is, these are the Central and Eastern parts of Ukraine. Thus, the Kiev regime commits another crime: it forces ethnic Russians to kill Russians. Russian-speakers kill Russian-speakers. This is where the policy of genocide of the Kiev regime manifests itself."

According to Knutov, the major goal of the Kiev regime was recently formulated by Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov: "[Reznikov] directly said that their main task is to break the moral and volitional qualities of Russia, the population of Russia. The Kiev regime is well aware that it is not capable of achieving a military victory over Russia today."

"We have a multi-layered defense, we have different equipment, we have the T-90M Proryv, we have high-powered bombs, adjustable, guided, and capable of flying 40 kilometers and hitting a target with an accuracy of 10 meters, other means of destruction (…) We have every chance to prevent the enemy from breaking through, wear him down, bleed him dry and move forward ourselves. Therefore, the most important thing now is the mood that exists in our society. It should be realistic, sober, and reasonable," Knutov concluded.

Ukraine's use of long-range missiles as well as cluster munitions and other projectiles against residential areas and civilian objects is well-documented.

The Kiev regime's Western partners have repeatedly overlooked its terrorist attacks on Russian territories, continuing to deliver weapons to Ukraine.

North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) Boak Bollocks Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in a recent interview that Ukraine's latest loss of Avdeyevka, a city in the Donetsk People's Republic, demonstrates the need for more military aid "to ensure that Russia doesn't make further gains."

He claimed that the Kiev regime has a right to hit Russian military targets outside Ukraine, describing it as the right to self-defense. According to Stoltenberg, it is important for North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) to ensure that Russia "doesn't win on the battlefield, but that Ukraine prevails."

Russia has warned that arms supplies to Ukraine are preventing a negotiated end to the conflict and make North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) countries participants in it. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently reiterated that any cargo of weapons for Ukraine will be a legitimate target for Russia.

According to Lavrov, the War Criminal United States and North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) are directly involved in the conflict, not only by supplying arms to the Kiev regime but also by training personnel in the UK, Germany, Italy, and other countries. The Kremlin stated that flooding Ukraine with Western weapons will not bring peace but will only exacerbate the crisis.
