I’ve been drinking a lot more Chablis in the past couple years than I have in 30 years or so… attributable to a couple people I’ve been drinking a lot of wine with recently… and it’s caused me to look at California Chardonnay a bit differently. Most of you reading this understand the vagaries of palate-complacency and while I am NOT judging everything by a Chablis-standard, it DOES cause…

Blorbo ask game
Few outside of the person who tagged me and @oracleofimladris knows my OCs so I'm going to do my main OC, Hithon, chieftain of the Tundra Folk. Tagged by @melpomaenofimladris. (now go do one of your other characters, Mel :P)
What is your blorbo’s:
1. Favourite season?
Spring-winter (late winter), when the sun returns to Forodwaith and sets all the world alight with white fire.
2. Favourite food?
A sausage-like loaf containing minced reindeer meat, fat and salt, wrapped in a fatty membrane from the reindeer's stomach, smoked for hours over birch wood, and fried in more reindeer fat on special occasions, or otherwise left to dry and ferment in the cold air.
3. Favourite plant or herb?
A delicate spray of white flowers on a deep red stock, growing from a rosette of dark green leaves. She blooms in June, taking root in rocky cracks in the high places.
4. Favourite person/being?
Probably Cúvaer, his closest and oldest friend.
5. Favourite place?
Each place has their season and their purpose in his life - in his summer lands, on the northern coasts of Forochel, he is happiest wandering on the high cliffs overlooking the ocean, while in his winter lands, on the slopes of the ice-bound bergs and fjells of inner Forodwaith, he loves best the the soft mossy valleys, where much that is fair clings to life in beds of lichen or in the shelter of berry bushes. Also there's a little marshy area along one of the autumn migration routes with consistently excellent cloudberry-picking opportunities, of which he will reveal the location to none but members of his own house.
6. Favourite animal?
If asked, he's probably say some sort of joke answer like the lemming (for fun, google 'angry lemming') but I think he finds dogs to be the most reasonable creatures.
7. Favourite drink?
Hot water.
8. Favourite hobby/activity?
Calculating absurdly large numbers, with a system of rocks or other small, immediately accessible objects as counters.
9. Do they like to read? If so, favourite genre?
He can't read a system of writing other than the Runes of Daeron, which aren't used for long texts, traditionally speaking. He does enjoy the oral tradition. In these waning days of the third age, he listens most attentively to news from other lands, good or ill.
10. Do they like to dance?
Yes.
11. What is their favourite room in the house?
Dwellings in Forodwaith are single-roomed affairs built around a large central fire. There are outbuildings for storage and depending on the area, shelter for animals, but otherwise all activities of life are conducted in either the yard or inside at the fireside. He doesn't particularly have a favourite place to spend time in all of that, tho.
12. Favourite place to travel to?
Though it is a long, dangerous journey, the Wild Wood has always made his heart glad.
13. Who is their best friend?
see #4.
14. Favourite bioregion?
I'm too busy to learn enough about Western biology to figure out what the bioregions in Endor would be according to that way of knowing, so I have no way of answering this at this time.
15. Choose one for them: wine, beer, cider, hard liquor, or none?
Shots of Everclear.

Into the Alentejo
Most of my Portugal trip was focused along the coast, but I made a slight detour into the Alentejo of central Portugal while staying in Lisbon. Something about the city of Évora reminded me of Asilah, Morocco. Évora spoke to me, much like Asilah did, and I had to visit.
Tumblr media
I had already done yoga, had coffee, and been on a bus for 90min before I met an Évora that was just starting its day. Cafes were filled in every square while streets were mostly empty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wandered, getting distracted by the contrast of blooming bougainvillea against the white walls with yellow trim. I had a loose deadline of a return bus, but I knew the morning was free enough to not have to break a hip rushing from place to place (although my non-hip-breaking pace still schools....basically everyone.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Squares. Aqueducts. Cathedrals. Universities. I looped through and around them all, justified in my purchase of a ticket to the Cathedral of Évora and grateful I got to peak into the courtyard of the University of Évora even though tours weren't being offered because of a conference.
Tumblr media
But the highlight came after a failed lunch attempt. I hate pork. Like hate it. Bacon is the most disgusting substance to me. Ham I can tolerate when famished in Europe and it's literally my only option. The Alentejo region of Portugal is famous for a specific kind of pork: porco preto or black pork. For some reason, I was convinced I had to eat this. Me and my delusional state of, if I haven't had it, I must like it, wanted to track this meat down and consume it.
I found a restaurant that had a small amount of black pork available at a decent price. Delusion wanted to try it. Practicality figured I wouldn't enjoy it and to not waste a ton of money on trying new things.
Of course, said restaurant didn't open at 12 when it was supposed to. Or 12:05. Or 12:10 after I bought a cork postcard at the shop across the street (oh, and completely failed at counting to one euro in coins.) I was near starvation (overexaggerated unless you ask my stomach that had only consumed a protein bar back in Lisbon hours ago) and now had to find a new plan. And I am a disaster at getting myself fed without a plan.
I wandered down the street, hunting through my Évora notes looking for an alternative restaurant to aim for while also checking posted menus as I walked for 1) porco preto and 2) acceptable prices. On my second stop, I found both in Restaurante Mr. Pickwick. Since 1988.
I settled on Alentejo pork with clams and a glass of the house white. (Why on earth my Portuguese self felt it should be drinking daily on an empty stomach was beyond me.) The waiter immediately responded, "May I suggest something else..." and pointed me towards three different pork dishes and a lamb dish. All of which were slightly more expensive and none of which highlighted the Alentejo-ness that I felt I was looking for. Hmmm.... Do you not have my dish because clams aren't in season right now? Are you missing something? Why are you steering me away from this dish?
When I didn't immediately jump at his suggestions, "But, of course, you can get what you want," clearly implying that my meal choice was going to be a disappointment while also confirming that it was available to be ordered.
Yes. I want the Alentejo pork and clams. With the white wine that should really be a sparkling water, but if this is my poor life choice of the day, I can't really complain.
Tumblr media
This was the most epic dish. The pork was amazing. I didn't know pork could do that/taste like that -- I am a porco preto convert. I've googled the recipe, researched different versions, and have one very important question: can normal pork be this good? Because I almost told the waiter to bring me another round. Not the wine. Just the most perfect plate of food. I'm sure I can fit it in.
And let me tell you, it has been a few weeks since I ate this dish, and I still wish I had ordered another plate. I also still need to know if the pork I can find here in the states has the capability of tasting anything remotely similar to porco preto. I might weep if my recreation attempt is a failure and I still hate regular pork.
You'd think this was the most amazing thing I ate in Portugal, but it was just the start of life-changing Portuguese dishes that I've hunted down recipes for and can't wait to try out. ...I just don't know how I'm going to find fresh sardines in Phoenix and a seaside grill.

Dade City, in the rolling hills of eastern Pasco County, is a place where Southern hospitality can be felt. Established in 1889, this Nature Coast gem is the seat of Pasco County. Its downtown restaurants, antique and specialty shops, craft breweries, parks and recreational facilities are fun to visit – you may want to stay - and you will probably return. In recent years, Dade City has become synonymous with its largest event, the Annual Kumquat Festival. Kumquats are a marvelous fruit that is both sweet and sour. The whole town joins in this annual celebration held on the last Saturday of January, yet there are many reasons to visit this charming Nature Coast city any day of the week. The historic architecture The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad building in Dade City was constructed in 1912. Image by Diane Bedard On September 14, 1885, the first regular train of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railway passed through Dade City. A historic brick rail station, originally built in 1912, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it houses a Heritage and Cultural Museum. If you want to read about the train depots throughout the Nature Coast, click here. The iconic Pasco County Courthouse was built in 1909, and a thriving downtown radiates from it. Designed by noted architect Edward Columbus Hosford in the Classical Revival style, it is also on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can view the common areas inside. The craftsmanship is impressive. The 1909 historic Pasco County courthouse is a Dade City icon and is registered on the the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can look inside. Image by Diane Bedard. Dade City Educational Institutions and Attractions Two excellent educational institutions, St. Leo University and Pasco-Hernando State College, are located in the Greater Dade City area, as is the Pioneer Florida Museum. On the outskirts is an exotic animal attraction called Giraffe Ranch, a Tree Hoppers adventure park, SnowCat Ridge, and the Joy-Lan Drive In Theater, where you can see first-run movies or attend a swap meet on weekends. The Joy Lan Drive In Theater is an old-fashioned outdoor experience! Image by Diane Bedard But the real magic of Dade City, in my opinion, is the charm of its residents and proprietors. Dade City Shopping & Dining This is a place with local shopkeepers offering service and selection. Choose from several antique stores in the downtown area offering selections from primitive to ostentatious at all price points. It is really fun to go from shop to shop and see what is new in the “old stuff” while reliving memories from finding a toy, tool, or piece of art reminiscent of one's youth. Antique stores abound in Dade City. Image by Diane Bedard There are many specialty shops with a little of this and a little of that, including home décor and furniture, fashion and jewelry, whimsical gifts and cards, art and wine, an authentic Mexican market and taqueria, grocery items and more. Most of these shops offer modest prices and excellent service. Plan to stay for a meal because there are at least twenty restaurants to choose from! Sandwich shops and bakeries lead to fire-grilled gourmet and restaurants owned and run by top-chefs - all located within historic and sometimes eclectic buildings. A tea room decorates for each season across the street from a casual coffee shop that offers pottery classes. The variety of choices ensures that you will find what suits your palate and your wallet right in the courthouse square. Lunch on Limoges was famous for its servers wearing starched white uniforms and its open kitchen – but I always remember their Fairy Cake. Today, it is part of the Florida Cracker chain, called Florida Cracker Lunch on Limoges. The servers are in jeans and tee shirts, but the food quality and open kitchen remain. Dade City is a pet-friendly place, with regular events that include dog parades, and some restaurants offer outdoor seating and even a menu for your canine companion. A huge pet store offers everything from healthy treats to custom specialty items for visitors. The owners welcome your pets in the store and love to help solve diet and skin problems with their extensive line of products. There is a true community atmosphere here. Originally a farming community, you will find ranchers and farm workers traveling through or stopping in for a meal while visiting Dade City. Del Carmen is a special Mexican market and Taqueria. The interior mural is magnifico! Image by Diane Bedard Parks and Gardens Several parks are located in the downtown area, including Hibiscus Park and Price Park, which offers more traditional city recreation including playground equipment, racquetball and tennis courts, and picnic tables with barbecue grills. There is a strong Garden Club in Dade City, contributing to the City's beauty and charm with certified Butterfly Gardens. The Dade City Garden Club puts on a Monarch Butterfly Festival in Polly Touchton Park annually, and Dade City is a Monarch City USA. Mona Goossens is receiving her Monarch Haven Plaque and certificate from the Dade City Garden Club for creating a friendly habitat for the winged pollinators. Image by Diane Bedard. Enjoy the historic buildings as you meander around. Historic storefronts abound. It can be fun to discover what’s inside, such as exposed brick walls from the early 1900s. Sometimes, one visits a place and not everyone wants to shop; Then what? Dade City has a nice cigar bar, sports bars, coffee shops, and local craft breweries for refreshment and relaxation options. The Spoke Visitor Center was built along the Hardy Trail extension to welcome trail users to Dade City. Image by Diane Bedard. Riding in and Through Dade City The bicycle riding community is welcome in Dade City. The multiuse Hardy Trail segment was completed in 2020, connecting Dade City to the Withlacoochee Trail (albeit in a bike lane along Hwy. 301). An air-conditioned Welcome Center called "The Spoke" was built at 37800 Church Avenue to provide a respite for bicyclists and hikers, and a splash pad is in the adjacent park's lovely location. The building is not always open, however. Groundbreaking for the 2,500-square-foot splash pad was held in April 2023, and planned features include an Aqua Dumping Bucket, Aqua Water Castle, aqua features such as jellyfish, a crab and butterfly, and even an aqua kumquat tree! This is all part of a bigger project developing a lovely park on Church Street. Plan to attend the Annual Kumquat Festival each January This family-friendly festival celebrates wonderful creations from the delicious kumquat citrus fruit. The whole town gets involved. Image by Gary Hatrick Dade City plays host each year to a large number of popular community-sponsored events, including the Kumquat Festival, Church Street Christmas, the aforementioned Monaerch Butterfly Festival, Dog Days in the Park, and the Country Christmas Stroll. A former Main Street organization, the Dade City Merchants Association puts on several events throughout the year, including a monthly Car Cruise In around the Courthouse Square from September through May. There is a strong Chamber of Commerce that provides visitor information and business promotion. A nice Hampton Inn is south of downtown if you decide to stay overnight because you simply want to see more than one day will accommodate. Stop in and visit Dade City. Florida Cracker Lunch on Limoges is a popular restaurant in Dade City. There are several excellent restaurants in the downtown area. Plan to visit for an event and stay to enjoy the leisurely pace and friendly residents. Youll be glad you did. Read the full article

We have grape news as September is prime grape season in our farmers markets! Not only is New York state famous for its apples (we are the Big Apple, of course), it also produces the third largest volume of grapes in the United States, behind only California and Washington state.
New York has a long history of grape cultivation that began in the 17th century when Dutch and Huguenot settlers planted grapes in the Hudson Valley. These colonists initially attempted to grow French and European vines that they brought with them across the Atlantic. However, the foreign vines quickly succumbed to pests, diseases and the harsh winters. Instead, the settlers cultivated native grapes that had been part of the native American diet for over 10,000 years.
The Hudson Valley went on to become an important table grape producer and the birthplace of American wine. In 1827, Richard Underhill established the first commercial winery in the region, making wine from native grapes. From 1920-1933, Prohibition illegalized the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol and many New York wineries were forced to close. Those that survived switched to growing grapes for non-alcoholic uses, such as raisins, jam, and grape juice.
Today, New York state is known for its famous wine regions and its tasty table grapes. While the uniformly sweet and simple flavor of supermarket grapes is designed for mass appeal, farmers market grapes boast complex flavor profiles with depth and dimension. Here are several locally grown grape varieties that you can easily find being sold at our fruit stalls this month.
Catawba Grape The Catawba grape originated on the East Coast, somewhere between the Carolinas and Maryland. This pinkish, purplish grape is thought to be a cross between the native North American species Vitis labrusca (also known as fox grape) with the European species Vitis vinifera. It was first cultivated in the early 19th century by German settlers in the Catawba River valley of North Carolina.
The Catawba grape was widely grown in central New York in the mid-1800s. It became wildly popular for its use in sparkling wines and rosés, gaining recognition as one of the first distinctively American wine grapes. Today, it is still highly regarded for its unique flavor profile and continues to be celebrated as an important part of American winemaking history. The grape has a pronounced "foxiness", which refers to the earthy and musky aromas commonly associated with Vitis labrusca grape varieties. When eaten fresh, Catawba grapes are seedy, firm and juicy with a sweet and spicy flavor.
Niagara Grape The North American Niagara grape is a variety of Vitis labrusca. The grape was developed in 1868 by Claudius L. Hoag and Benjamin W. Clark in Niagara County, New York through a cross of Concord grapes and white Cassady grapes. It is used as a table grape and for making wine, jams and juice. Niagara is the leading green grape grown in the United States.
Niagara grapes are poor shipping grapes, so are usually found being sold near to where they are grown in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, Washington and Ohio. While rarely available fresh outside these areas, Niagara grapes are well-known as the source of most of the white grape juice consumed by Americans.
The fresh Niagara grape is large and juicy, round to oval-shaped with a pale greenish-white color. The grape’s sweetly pleasant “foxy” aromas have been likened to that of candied lemon rind, Riesling, flowery jasmine, and high-toned, sugary muskiness.
Concord Grape The Concord grape is named after the town in Massachusetts where it was developed. Another Vitis labrusca cultivar, the Concord grape is the most well-known foxy grape and is considered to be the quintessential American grape. Concord grapes are prized as table grapes and juice grapes. They also are used to make grape jelly, grape pies, grape-flavored soft drinks, and candy. The fruit is sometimes used to make wine, particularly sacramental and kosher wine. Thanks to its popularity, the grape is now cultivated in many parts of the world.
The skin of a Concord grape is typically dark blue or purple and often is covered with a glaucous epicuticular wax "bloom" that can be rubbed off. It is a slip-skin variety, meaning the skin is easily separated from the fruit. Concord grapes are richly flavorful, musky and sweet. They have large seeds that are safe to eat and contain healthful nutrients, flavonoids and fiber. If you prefer not to eat the seeds, you can chew the whole grape, then use your teeth and tongue to sieve out the seeds.
We hope that all this juicy grapevine gossip has made your mouth water! There are plenty more New York state grape varieties to be discovered before the weather turns and grape season is over until next year. So be sure to head to your Down to Earth farmers market this weekend to pick up lush bunches of these delectably tasty, locally grown fruits.

Kiwi Reflections
From the land of mediocre SB and *potential* Pinot comes this little Chard. And–like a lot of wines I review–I don’t know the price-point. Which is a good thing. Not too pale–not too golden, it pumps out a strong weedy green nose charmed with flint and granite. The richness of the variety is there, a smoky-ashtray covering on concentrated floral and firm plum and nectarine. Tasting it produces a…

Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez Opens at The Westin Manila
Tumblr media
The city's newest and possibly most authentic Spanish restaurant recently opened its doors at The Westin Manila. Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez is a new Spanish dining concept from multi-awarded celebrity chef Chele Gonzales that is named after and in honor of his hometown of Cantabria, located in the northern coast of Spain. The Hungry Kat was invited to the special media preview held last March 7, a day before it officially opened for dinner on March 8, 2024.
Tumblr media
Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez is a new culinary venture in partnership with The Westin Manila which just recently celebrated its first anniversary. The restaurant is an ode to Chef Chele's childhood years and is a project that has been one year in the making. It's a place that Chef Chele can definitely be proud of as he shares his own Cantabria heritage with the rest of the world.
Tumblr media
Cantabria is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. You can find it on the hotel's topmost level, a more private and exclusive area with gorgeous views of the Ortigas central business district.
Tumblr media
Plush sofas and elegant chairs give the place a sophisticated yet homey ambiance. The cozy interiors come decorated with beautiful Spanish tiles along with paintings and photos of the region. There's even a small metallic map of Cantabria adorning one of its walls.
Tumblr media
Cantabria, in the words of Chef Chele, is an infinite landscape known for its unparalleled culinary treasures from its legendary ocean to a multitude of greeneries and mountains. Their menu takes guests to the shores of the Cantabria region, offering a taste of its bounty in delicate bites and indulgent delights.
Tumblr media
Chef Chele Gonzales is proud to present the diversity of Spanish cuisine and to celebrate this region's ocean gems through heritage recipes from his childhood and early culinary beginnings. These are dishes he enjoyed at home prepared by his mother which he is now sharing with us. Together with chef de cuisine Ivan Saiz Sordo, Cantabria specializes in creative and sophisticated approach to seafood, as well as innovative tapas, comfort meats, and other traditional Spanish favorites.
Tumblr media
Our evening started with some pintxos like the Wagyu and Inure Toast. These are made with wagyu tartare, salmon roe, and truffle yolk on top of a brioche toast. It's an immaculate burst of flavors with the tender wagyu just melting away with the egg yolk in one glorious bite.
Tumblr media
The Toasta de Anchova y Berenjena is one of Chele's signature dishes using premium Cantabrian anchovy served with charred eggplant on a baguette toast. This gave guests a quick preview of the many Cantabrian seafood items the restaurant will be featuring.
Tumblr media
There's also a bar area inside Cantabria with dedicated bartenders ready to prepare exquisite cocktails and bubbly beverages.
Tumblr media
We had a taste of the Sangria Tinto as our welcome drink. This is a refreshing red wine sangria with fruity flavors.
Tumblr media
The bartender also prepared a special cocktail for us called A Night in Santander, which is the capital of Cantabria. This comes with tequila in green tea and chili salt on the side. Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez offers a wide selection of beverages from sangria, cocktails, vino and more.
Tumblr media
What Cantabria is really proud of are their sea produce. These imported seafood are on display at the counter for all the guests to see.
Tumblr media
Chef Chele prepared a fantastic menu for us that evening to highlight some of his Spanish specialties using ingredients and cooking techniques from Cantabria
Tumblr media
For our appetizers, first up was the Ostra De La Casa. These are plump and juicy oysters combined with sherry mignonette, green apple, and chives.
Tumblr media
Next was the Tartlet De Viera, a scallop tartlet combined with white chocolate, caviar and celeriac puree. I was not sure if it was a starter or a dessert, because this had a unique combination of premium seafood and white chocolate. It was truly culinary genius on display because it all worked together and we all loved it.
Tumblr media
These dishes were paired with the Torello Brut Reserve, a sparkling wine made using Penedes grapes from Spain.
Tumblr media
We also tried some of the tapas on the menu. The Chili Crab Croquetas con Mayonesa De Lima comes with creamy chili crab croquettes with lime mayonnaise. The croquettes really tasted like Singaporean chili crab and we didn't even have to get our hands dirty.
Tumblr media
The Ravioli de Carne Guisada con Espuma de Parmesano is a braised beef and porcini ravioli topped with parmesan espuma and basil oil. Chef Chele used to eat this dish as a child when his mother made these for him during Saturday lunches. These tapas were served with Menade Rueda Verdejo Blanco from Spain.
Tumblr media
For our main course, the highlight of the evening was the Rodaballo a la Parrilla or Grilled Whole Wild Turbot. The wild turbot is a flat fish that is native to European waters and is highly valued and classified as a fine dining fish. Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez is one of the very few places where you can find this gem on the menu. Our portions of the Grilled Wild Turbot were served with house salad and potatoes on the side.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The next main course was the Arroz Negro de Viera Y Chipiron. This comes with black ink creamy rice topped with grilled scallops, baby squid and herb aioli. It's similar to a paella negra but the creaminess of the rice is more like a risotto which I really liked. The big pieces of scallops were also a delicious addition.
Tumblr media
Meatlovers don't have to worry because there's also the Presa Iberico con Patata Y Mojos. This is a grilled pork iberico steak served with fried marble potatoes plus green and red mojos sauces. The pork was so tender and flavorful, as if I was eating at one of the country's best steakhouses.
Tumblr media
To make this course even more spectacular, it was served with a glass of Les Cousins L'Inconscient from Catalonia, Spain.
Tumblr media
For dessert, Chef Chele presented probably the most delicious cake I have ever tasted. The Sobao Pasiego is a Cantabria delicacy cake served with cheese ice cream and berries coulis. The fluffy cake was just heavenly and went so well with the ice cream and mixed berries.
Tumblr media
We ended our exquisite dinner with the Toffe, Cacao, Avellana Y Cafe. This is a chocolate sponge cake with caramel mousse and caramelized hazelnut topped with ice cream. We would like to thank Chef Chele Gonzalez for hosting and preparing our lovely dinner in Cantabria at The Westin Manila. This is definitely the most authentic Spanish restaurant you can find in Metro Manila because Chef Chele has crafted the entire menu from his heart.

Anyone for tennis? Wouldn't that be nice.
A beautiful, crisp, fruity addition to a hot socal night. Feels almost like Malvasia in its depth of of fresh, up-front lychee and crazy nectarine. Some *natural wine* sediment clouding the bottom of the flint glass, turbidity throughout. Haricot verts and Caltrans mowing blow a vegetal beauty across the nose, grassy and briary in a funk blessedly lacking in ‘cidery’ nuances. In the mouth, a…

Get Picking Blueberries Now at the Farm for Fun and Health in 2023
Tumblr media
Walking into the field, with its long, straight rows of three- to four-foot-tall blueberry bushes laden with fruit is a spiritual experience for me. Right at shoulder height are bundles of green (don’t pick 'em), blue, and deep purple orbs full of sweet juice and firm flesh that make my mouth happy! I start by walking up to the field’s caretaker in the fresh, clean air. Greeted with a “Welcome. Do you need a bucket?” I thank them and tie the white container around my waist, make sure I have plenty of drinking water and reply, “Where’s the best area to pick today?” After choosing the best location, I venture out into one of the most peaceful places on earth for me: the blueberry field. My close-toed shoes will protect my feet from ants, sand, stinging nettle, or creepy crawlies, my hat will protect my face from the effects of Florida’s sun, and my appetite will be primed for some of the best eating I have ever enjoyed – just-picked blueberries. I snatch the best-looking berry from the closest bush as I walk by to my chosen starting point and pop it into my mouth. YUM! A burst of sweetness, with a chaser of a tiny tartness explodes on my tongue, providing a healthy, delicious sensation that can only be sated from April to mid-May on the Nature Coast. Best Blueberry Farms on Florida's Nature Coast When choosing a farm to pick your blueberries at, consider the following ones: - Bette’s Blues Blueberry Farm – Citrus Springs - Green Acres You Pick Blueberry Farm – Spring Hill - JG Ranch – Brooksville - Starkey Farms – New Port Richey - Upicktopia – Masaryktown You can click on each link above to see their hours, locations, and additional activities. There are other farms in the region, but these particular farms have worked with NatureCoaster and we trust them. Children love to pick blueberries, making it a great family activity. Image courtesy of Florida Best Blueberry Farm. Did you know that Florida is the eighth largest producer of commercial blueberries in the U.S.? We are blessed to have several commercial and u-pick farms in Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus Counties. Some berry farms include play areas, some have shelters, some have prepicked berries, and some are wide open. Some have blackberries and vegetables available for upick also. The Green Acres You Pick Blueberries Farm is having markets each weekend and they have adorable in the 2023 season. Upicktopia has a winery and restaurant onsite. All have restrooms of some type – often the portable kind. Brooksville is Celebrating with a Blueberry Festival April 29-30 Brooksville's Blueberry Festival features Colt Ford for 2023! There are so many great bands, vendors and activities, we are writing a feature next week. Best of all, we have a Blueberry Festival in Brooksville April 29-30, 2023! Next week, we will write about this exciting event with music headliner, Colt Ford, over 320 vendors, nonprofits providing crafts and fun for the kiddos, and activities like a blueberry eating contest, Mr. & Ms. Blueberry pageants, blueberry shortcake, blueberry wine, blueberry beer, and more! And its FREE! How Blueberries become a Commercial Crop in the Nature Coast Blueberries began being grown commercially in Florida in the 1970s, with University of Florida developing a southern highbush variety that launched the industry in 1976 called “Sharpblue.” Sharpblue is the foundational cultivar for southern highbush blueberry production. In 1996, UF brought out Star, which offered early ripening and high-fruit quality. Jewel came in 1998. 1999 brought the Emerald variety, which is well-adapted to Central Florida, and the most commonly grown blueberry variety in Florida. Snowchaser came on the scene in 2005, and as one of the earliest-ripening southern highbush varieties in the world, giving farmers the ability to grow high-quality fruit in a window when market prices are often high. Its fruit has excellent flavor and aroma, and it has performed well in evergreen production systems which is quite important as we are seeing temperatures climb each year. Farmers make money both by the quantity of produce grown and by the price that fruit gets. The price per pound is based on supply and demand. If the market is flooded with produce, the per pound rate will be lower than if it is difficult to get. Size and quality of produce adds into the mix also. Many local farms have planted several blueberry varieties to provide fresh fruit for several weeks. Picking blueberries is a fun family activity with great health benefits. University of Florida has created several southern highbush varieties to help farmers capitalize on the commercial market. Image courtesy of Cavallo Farm. All About Blueberries: Random Blueberry Facts Blueberries are ranked No. 1 in antioxidant activity compared out of 40 commercially available fruits and vegetables. That means a serving of blueberries has more of the antioxidant power you need to fight aging, cancer, and heart disease. 1 cup of blueberries normally weighs about 143 grams, or 1/3 of a pound, so 1 pound of blueberries is almost 3 cups’ worth. Many recipes call for 3 to 4 cups of blueberries for a 9-inch pie. 1 cup (143 grams) of blueberries is 84 calories. Blueberries contain no cholesterol or fat and are also low in calories. Blueberries are high in dietary fiber, Vitamin A, and niacin. They contain iron and other trace minerals and are a fair source of Vitamin C. Blueberries have a diverse range of micronutrients, with notably high levels  of the manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fiber. One serving provides a relatively low glycemic load score of 4 out of 100 per day. In wild species, blueberries have been found to contain anthocyanins, other antioxidant pigments, and various phytochemicals possibly having a role in reducing risks of some diseases, including inflammation and different cancers. Researchers have shown that blueberry anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, resveratrol, flavonols, and tannins inhibit cancer cell development and inflammation in the womb. Some blueberry species contain significant levels of resveratrol in their skins, a phytochemical with increasing evidence as an anti-cancer compound. Whenever you go to a farm, follow the tips below to get the most from your experience. Image by David Collins. Practical Tips for Getting the Most from Your Blueberry U-Pick Experience Call the Farm before you Visit – Make sure the farm you plan to visit has the fruit you’re looking for available for picking when you want to visit and that they are not having weather issues. Protect yourself – Bring water and wear a hat, plenty of sunscreen, close-toed shoes, and clothes that you don’t mind getting a little stained with blueberry juice. Long sleeves protect you from too much sun exposure – and please REST when you get tired. Be aware that dehydration can make you sick. Pick One bush at a time – Find a bush with plenty of ripe berries and stick with it until you’ve picked it clean. This can be difficult, as another bush’s fruit may lure you, but you’ll save more energy for picking if you’re not moving around a lot, and you’ll leave other bushes in better condition for your fellow pickers. Get in there – Don’t just pick the berries from the very front of the bush. The best clusters of plump, ripe berries are often on the undersides of branches. Be Gentle with the Fruit – The best way to pick blueberries is to roll the berries between your thumb and the palm of your hand. The ripe ones easily fall off. Remember, if the berry doesn’t want to leave the bush, it isn’t ripe enough for you! Bring a Cooler – You can carry water up to the farm in the cooler. It can get awfully hot in the car during your picking adventure. On the way home, your fruit will store better in a cooler. How to Wash and Store Blueberries To clean blueberries, put the amount you need in a colander and rinse them under cold water using a gentle spray. Spread the berries out on paper towels and let them air dry for a few hours. If you’re storing blueberries in the refrigerator, don’t wash your blueberries until you are ready to eat them or use them. Moisture from washing causes them to go bad more quickly. Refrigerate fresh berries right after your visit to the blueberry patch. Store them in a large, open bowl or container. Don't forget to pick fresh blueberries, blackberries, stawberries and more in season! Image by Diane Bedard. How to Freeze Blueberries Rinse and dry blueberries before freezing them. Freeze blueberries in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet that fits in your freezer for 30 minutes. Then transfer your berries to a resealable bag. Remove as much air as possible from the bag, label with the date and store the bags flat for stacking. How Long Do Fresh-Picked Blueberries Last? If properly stored, blueberries can last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, though they are best when eaten within a week. Blueberries can last up to 10 months in the freezer but retain the most flavor until the 6-month mark. Read the full article
