San Jose del Cabo
I’m not here to give a review on every resort we have visited in the past. We have traveled to Mexico seven times in ten years. There’s something for everyone in Mexico. All adult resorts, resorts that cater to the LGBT community and family friendly resorts where children can run freely while the parents relax. It’s been almost three years since our last visit and I promised my daughter I would take her on vacation one of these days. I laugh and tell her that she was with us in Mexico one year, she was just in my belly baking. We always went to an adult only resort but there a plenty of kid friendly resorts that are amazing. Which we will be planning very soon. Mexico is my favorite place to visit that has beautiful warm turquoise water, (the East Coast of Mexico) the amazing people we met and kept friendships with and the memories that will last us forever.
What I LOVE about Mexico, is the All-Inclusive resorts where you don’t have to worry about meals and unlimited drinks. Spa treatments, the romantic candle lit dinner on the beach and being able to relax and not have a care in the world. My one pet peeve is the resorts who harass you about Time Share. Yes, they will be waiting for you when you get off the plane and waiting at the resort. They can be convincing when they are offering you a free dinner, massage or something intriguing that will have you listen for a hour or more about why you should buy a time share. We now kindly say, “no thank you” and enjoy our stay. An All-Adult Inclusive resort can range in prices. We’ve stayed for 5-7 days and have spent $1800-$4000 with air fare included. There are many resorts to choose from for any budget. Be sure not to visit during Spring Break when all the college students are on vacation and check to see when their winter season start. This can put a damper on your trip due to rain. The seven times we visited it rained only one once, which we still enjoyed our day. We traveled in the months of April, May and June and had perfect weather.
My husband is a beach lover and I’m the female Indiana Jones. You can relax or you can go on many adventures from snorkeling, visiting the pyramids, booze cruises, and checking out great restaurants.

The Arch of Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas was our destination we set out to go. Cabo sits on the tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. We stayed in San Jose del Cabo. We read reviews of different resorts and I wanted to see real photos of visitors that stayed during their visit. I went to Trip Advisor where travelers share photos of there rooms, the resort and see what they had to say about their visit. We both agreed that we did not want a “family friendly” resort. We were on vacation and didn’t want to see any children while we were away relaxing.
When we booked our vacation during the big “Swine Flu” outbreak and officials made a warning for travelers going out of the country. We figured we could get sick from a person locally and headed on our way. We had a beautiful ocean view room with a jacuzzi that sat on the balcony. It was truly a romantic vacation. Due to the Swine Flu scare the hotel was 50% occupied. We had a great time. There were two pools, outside jacuzzi, three restaurants and the staff was amazing. They kept us entertained with daily activities and catered to all our needs.

 Cabo San Lucas, Sunset Cruise
We took a 30 minute cab ride from our resort to Cabo for our sunset cruise to see Lovers Arch. As we sailed across the Pacific sea we were greeted by of family whales. I never seen a whales so close before and was an amazing site to see. We watched the sun set and headed back to the resort and continued the rest of our vacation. At the end of our trip I was a newly engaged woman and no swine flu.

Now that we visited the West Coast part of Mexico it was time to get a taste of the East Coast. There was a difference of the coasts for me. The Pacific Sea was rough and we weren’t able to swim in the water and I notice the water was colder. The East Coast of Mexico is in the Caribbean Sea making the water warmer that is crystal clear turquoise with soft white sand. We have stayed in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Rivera Maya, and always take a taxi ride to 5th Avenue Playa del Carmen. We been to Mexico so many times, that we decided to rent a car to get around next time we visit. This is how comfortable we feel traveling when we visit. Playa del Carmen offer a strip of shopping boutiques, restaurants, night clubs and beautiful beach. During our visits we saw a few beautiful beach weddings. Mexico is also a big destination wedding location. This is something we considered, but spent our honeymoon here instead.
During our stay at the resorts we visited there was always a great staff, fun daily activities, night club on premises so you can have a good time and head back to your room. The rooms we have booked always had a king size bed, jacuzzi and some with an ocean view suite. Morning sunrise with coffee was something I didn’t grow tired of. During our stay we always made time to visit their spas for massages and I always booked my favorite seaweed wrap. It felt great waking up and walking on the the beach, soaking up the sun and being served drinks like royalty. The resorts have excursions you can book that leave from the hotel each morning. Tip: we did found out instead of going on the long bus tours you can hire a private driver for the day. You won’t end up on a 12 hour tour ( something my husband remind me all the time) but will have a private time and will be the same cost if not cheaper going with a driver. Speak to the hotel to have this arranged.
Tumblr media
Chichen Itza was a spectacular site that is a MUST SEE, the Mayan architecture was incredible. Chichen Itza means, “at the mouth of the well of Itza”. Every time the History channel play an episode I yell to the TV, “I been there!” I felt like, I stepped back into time of the Mayans the structures were standing there untouched as they did in the past. The Mayans were technically advance but were quite brutal in their sacrificial offerings. When we toured here it was hot and not much shade to hide from the sun. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, sun block, wear a sun hat and bring water. Tip: Buy souvenirs while you are here, they are cheaper. During our tour we were taken to a Cenote a few miles from the ruins. Cenotes were Maya sacred places of life and death, as their source of water and as the gateway to the underworld.
I will continue adding more trips to Mexico in the years to come. There are many places I want to explore and want to take my children along for the adventure. Here is my BUCKET LIST of Things to see in Mexico: Tulum, Cozumel, Merida, Copper Canyon, Sumidero Canyon, Marieta Islands, Palenque, and the Gran Cenote. Book your next vacation you won’t forget.
Why I Can’t Get Enough of Mexico I'm not here to give a review on every resort we have visited in the past. We have traveled to Mexico seven times in ten years.

If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work. Simone Biles has been showing off a stylish vacation wardrobe on her girls' trip to Cancun, Mexico. The newly engaged Olympic medalist leans toward classic swimsuits, usually complete with a low-rise bottom, a swimsuit silhouette she's been a fan of. She's already sported two suits by sister-led brand Mikoh, including this blue gingham two-piece. Biles used the print to channel a full-fledged '90s moment, adding a white bucket hat and an oversized boyfriend shirt worn as a cover-up. "I swear I have it all together I just forgot where I put it," she captioned her photo on the balcony of her room, with the ocean in full view behind her. Biles accessorized the beach look with a choker necklace and rings (perhaps she stuck with her second silicone engagement ring for a day in the sun). Biles chose a swim label that represents strong women, beauty, and strength, with the Japanese word "Miko" meaning "female shaman" or "female prophecy." Based in Orange County, CA, sisters and designers Oleema and Kalani Miller come from a family of surfers (Oleema is a former professional), so there's a clear connection to Biles as a fellow athlete. They designed Biles's Vikana top — which offers fuller coverage with a square neckline and wide straps — to complement the Cenote bottoms that have a sleek shape. Ahead, shop Biles's exact look for $292, along with several similar options, and keep your eyes on Instagram for all the patterned sets that she's been wearing lately. window.fbAsyncInit = function() FB.init( appId : '175338224756', status : true, // check login status xfbml : true, // parse XFBML version : 'v8.0' ); ONSUGAR.Event.fire('fb:loaded'); ; // Load the SDK Asynchronously (function(d) var id = 'facebook-jssdk'; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; if (typeof scriptsList !== "undefined") scriptsList.push('src': 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js', 'attrs': 'id':id, 'async': true); (document)); [ad_2] Source link

In the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula, it’s easy to kickback at an all-inclusive resort and let your life pass you by. However, you are absolutely doing a disservice to yourself if you DON’T go and explore the Yucatan Peninsula, local Mayan culture, and the authentic food scene. We were lucky enough to experience the incredible Mayan culture at our own pace with the help of Viajes Con Ciencia. With authentic off-the-beaten-path experiences available, touring with Viajes Con Ciencia gave us the opportunity to explore without the large groups and beyond just the tourist sites.
Our guide for the day was Adrian – the Viajes Con Ciencia owner – and lucky for us, he lived with the Mayan people for many years and even understands the language! It was such a privilege to have someone who deeply understood the Mayan culture, history, and uniqueness beyond just a superficial level.
Mayan Culture Tour
We experienced the Chichen Itza History & Food Tour during our Honeymoon in Mexico. This particular tour focused on Mayan culture, practices and science in the northern parts of the Yucatan Peninsula. Everything was included in our ticket price.
This included:
Semi-private mini bus for no more than 10 people
Ticket and tour of Chichen Itza
Entrance fees to a secret cenote
A homestay meal at a local Mayan family’s home
Description:
Enjoy the freedom that our small group tour of Chichen Itza offers. You will learn about the advanced sciences of the Mayan Civilization, as well as feel the vibrant and the rich culture found in the Yucatan Peninsula. You will visit this ancient Mayan Ceremonial Center, considered a World Heritage Site of Unesco, as well as enjoy a mayan food tour in the historical center of the colonial city of Valladolid. At the end of the day, you will discover one of the most beautiful and secluded cenotes in Yucatan, truly one the highlights of the day. All of this while being joined by our expert in Yucatecan History and Mayan Anthropology.
  Our Experience
We were picked up by Adrian at our hotel just after 7:30. There were 9 of us on the trip and we were meeting at central locations to beat the large tour buses that would inevitably chase us along the highway later on in the day. The idea behind the early start to the day was the fact that it was going to take us 2 hours to drive to Chichen Itza and then we wanted to beat the large tour groups to have fewer crowds.
Our tour group was filled with predominantly French speakers, but that wasn’t an issue because Adrian can move between 3 languages effortlessly. It was quite a fun experience to practice our French with our new friends and to share common experiences and travel stories. There are multiple languages offered by Viajes Con Ciencia so there’s no problem with accommodating specific language requirements.
The Drive
Before heading out on the road, Adrian purchased coffees and snacks for the group (included) and then we piled into the mini-bus towards our first destination. Along the way, we were guided through local Mayan towns with architecture that was older than America itself! We listened to different stories, myths and historical explications about the Yucatan Peninsula and its inhabitants. This was a great opportunity for me to ask if ‘the aliens took the Mayans back to space?’ 😂(No).
As we were in a comfortable mini-bus, the ride was smooth and effortless. There was air conditioning and places to charge our phones! On our tour, we had an older woman who had a bit of a mobility issue so Adrian made sure she always had the front seat and opportunities to sit along the way. Most of the locations were accommodating to differently-abled guests, but the Cenote did have a few stairs.
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is the jewel of the Yucatan Peninsula and for good reason. Everything is so perfectly preserved, you almost FEEL like you can picture the Mayans playing a ball game for glory under the blazing sun.  When we arrived, we were immediately confronted with vendors selling hats. There is A LOT of open space at Chichen Itza so you definitely want to buy a hat. If you’re tempted by the vendors, I would spend no more than $200 pesos per hat (or $10 USD) and that is still very expensive!! Our poor French friends paid $600 pesos for two hats before we could hurry them away from the vendors.
Fortunately for us, Adrian brought us all reusable water bottles and a big jug of water that he would refill with ice. It was the perfect icy treat in bewteen locations to look forward to.
Chichen Itza is a large space with scattered ruins all around. The main attraction is the Kukulcan Temple and this is in the dead center of the park. This is where the majority of the tourist groups go first so be sure to get your Instagram shots in early!  You will be there early enough to do so without too many people. Over by the ‘Mil Columnas’ there will be loads of vendors that you can pick-up souvenirs from. They are actually very friendly so don’t be afraid to engage.
After a guided tour, we were able to explore on our own for a bit before returning back to the car for some snacks and ice-cold water.
Secret Cenote
Whilst we were in Tulum, we went to the Gran Cenote – which is just 5 minutes outside of the main city area. Even though we got there 10 minutes before opening time, we were STILL not the first ones there. Not even close. It was a bit chaotic so the ‘secret cenote’ that Adrian took us too was such a MAGICAL experience in comparison since there was virtually no one there.
The ‘secret cenote’ was not-so-secret as it is a privately owned tourist location, but there’s a lot of controls around who can come in and how many people can come. You won’t find any large tourist buses here! When we drove in, our entrance fee was covered already and we were able to change into our bathing suits in a private changing area that was beautiful and obviously recently built. Then we walked down to a cave on a decently paved path (with stairs!) and we emerged into the most beautiful cave I’ve ever seen. The cave was obviously paved to be accessed easier, but the cenote itself was stunning and 100% natural. There were stalactites coming down from the ceiling and the cenote was over 60 meters deep!! There were only small fish and some medium-sized catfish in the water so no worries there.
Before getting into the cenote water, you’re expected to shower and clean your body and hair of any unnatural oils and contents that could disturb the purity of the cenote water. This is VERY important!! Please don’t prioritize your Instagram photos/make-up over the preservation of this amazing natural space! You’re also required to wear a life jacket whenever you’re in the cenote soooo there goes any sexy water shots 😂
Homestay Mayan Meal
Last on our agenda, we had our homestay Mayan culture and food experience. We were able to join a traditional Mayan family in their home for a full meal. In the past, this family had been cooks for the major resorts, but now they’ve decided to bring tourists into their own home to do traditional Mayan cooking experiences. It was such an amazing experience to watch how this food is made and to learn more about what makes well-known meals (like Tacos!) different in this region. We were able to go outside as well to see their outdoor, underground fire pit where they would slow cook pork and other meat dishes.
Our meal included:
Multiple fresh-made agua frescas (or fruit/tea waters)
Multiple types of meat dishes
Spicy vegetable options
Fresh corn tortillas
Dynamic salsas
Small toppings
I chose to tip the wonderful family for their hospitality $200 pesos because money like this goes a long way. Viajes Con Ciencia of course pays this family a respectable wage for their hospitality, but money like this often goes to household bills or special services for the children in the house instead of just running costs for the business. I got to speak with the young girls in the house and I wanted to support their education and future directly.
Conclusion
Viajes Con Ciencia is the ideal way to support the local Mayan culture and community in the Yucatan Peninsula! By spending money in their communities versus paying a big travel company, you are directly impacting the area in a positive way. Not only was the tour well-planned, organized and informative, I just LOVED Adrian’s ethos as well. We talked about traveling, our personal lives, and what we hoped to accomplish with our businesses on a really intimate level. It was so refreshing just to get to know another person beyond just the formal operator-customer level. These are the types of personalized experiences that I’ve come to love and expect from Mexico. It’s the place with ZERO bad food and amazing, friendly people.

Let It Go To Let It Come | Engage 2017 Nizuc
"Let it go to let it come."
This message has been brought to me over and over again this year, but no more clearly than over my last week in Nizuc.
If I were a pessimist, I would say that 2017 has been rooted in loss.  But that isn't who am I, and the much clearer truth is that 2017 has been about releasing the things that are not truly mine.  Some of these releases were done with enthusiasm and appreciation; the selling of our family home, the giving over of things that no longer served us so that they could serve others.  Other things were released less graciously, much more slowly,  and infinitely more painfully; the loss of a best friend, the end of a partnership, and relationships with creatives that changed until they all but disappeared.  Those hurt, I won't pretend they didn't and don't.
Yet as my husband and I settled into our suite, I thought of the words I had heard from my friend Simon T Bailey just a week before:  "Let it go to let it come."  And in those first 24 hours together, I did think of the losses; not with the sadness that some of them had brought, but with appreciation and gratitude for what they allowed me to have.  My beautiful children.  My relationship with my parents and siblings.  My dear, sweet husband who truly is the greatest and only partner I have ever needed.   My clients.  My work.  A new business. New relationships.  New people to get messy and creative with.  Time.  And the coming of a new year which is full of opportunity and the promise of a chance to do something dazzling...
Like this trip.  Not taking a honeymoon (awful, I know!) was always a bit of a heartbreak for me.  But, much like the rest of our unconventional relationship, doing things our own way just works for Tony and I.  We didn't go into our marriage with starry eyes and idealistic dreams.  We chose each other as adults...Two people who more than loved each other, but liked each other.  This trip was filled with a giddy sense of excitement and planning for our future, as all honeymoons should be!  It also included naps, and talks, and dinners and room service.  We were able to marvel at the nearly 13 years we have spent together and the life we have created.  We walked about ourselves, we talked about our kids, our businesses, and our future.  We walked.  We laid around.  We repelled into a cenote!  I rode a bike for the first time in 28 years.
My husband left Nizuc as registration opened.  I kissed him at the curb and walked away; straight into a gaggle of my Engage family and friends.  As I waved him off I thought, "Let it go to let it come."
This blog isn't filled with all of things I learned; there is no "Top 10" list.  The gorgeous professional photos aren't up yet, and I've barely had time to review my notes.  But as I sit here on the plane, looking back at the week through the eyes of Instagram, I am just so grateful to have my husband, to have this confeernce, and to have these people....The ones who came and stayed.
More to come, with love...xoxo

Where Tech meets the Arts, and where Cowboys meet Raclette
By Anita Suter, Senior Communications Manager at swissnex Boston
Tumblr media
Once a year, the city of Austin attracts tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe. SXSW triggers people from all sorts of backgrounds and industries to rush into Texas, a state nearly 17 times the size of Switzerland, commonly associated with cattle ranches, cowboys and barbecue. Coming from near and far they are eager to participate in the ten day immersive celebration of innovation, technology, music, the arts, and a mix of all the above. This year, in an effort led by a multitude of Swiss partners, swissnex Boston joined a multidisciplinary, multi-event presence of Switzerland at this massive conference for the first time.
Tumblr media
The SXSW Trade Show - an expo for creative industries
The centerpiece of #SXSWISS was a Swiss booth at the SXSW Trade Show, the „exhibition for creative industries“ taking the first floor of the Austin Convention Center. Attendees browsed through exhibitor pavilions ranging in topics from „the future of food“, to „social impact“ (donate your USB stick to a charity who will fill it with ebooks, news and movies and bring it into countries with limited freedom of press and artistic expression) to „startup central“ (try your luck at the „Helicopter pitch“ lounge.)
#SXSWISS - the Swiss at South by Southwest
Within the International Pavilion, the Swiss booth was THE place to be for anyone who wanted to get a first-hand Virtual Reality experience for a bird's eye perspective of the New York Skyline (loooong lines for Birdly, our all time favorite, ZHDK-sourced immersive flight simulator), who came looking to see their drawings come alive (ETH Zurich Game Technology Center with Disney Research) or who were eager to play with video games by Apelab, Playable and Struckd - to name only a few of our booth occupants. Equipped with Vitra multifunctional furniture, the Swiss booth was also a place for one-on-one meetings with clients and stakeholders, permitting all participating parties to discuss business on the spot.
Tumblr media
Swiss-made VR, AR and gaming experiences showcased at #SXSW
Tumblr media
Speaker sessions: From cancer research to wearable technology
While the expo was a fun and engaging way to interact with the audience, the true essence of SXSW interactive laid in its array of keynote speeches and panel discussions, this year featuring former Vice-President Joe Biden (who made a passionate speech asking tech leaders and innovators to get more involved in research toward finding a cure for cancer), New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet (who shared his perception of the news media's role in the coming years on stage during "Covering POTUS: A Conversation with the Failing NYT") to name just a couple.
Tumblr media
It was also all about the Levi's and Google smart jacket taking the stage for a glimpse into the feature of wearable technology (answering your phone and getting direction at the tap of your sleeve? Exactly.) You could also quench your thirst for insights about the “Future of Museums” (because AR/VR/MR content is changing the mediation between visitors and the artworks as we’re speaking).
Swiss researchers taking the stage
A different kind of wearable was presented by renowned EPFL researchers Grégoire Courtine and Stéphanie Lacour. They talked about their groundbreaking efforts to make paralyzed people walk again. “Elastic interfaces for your body” was the first of three Swiss panels, with "Can I trust my AI therapist" discussing the chances and dangers of Artificial Intelligence in Health Challenges, and with an all female panel tackling the question of how to incubate creativity.

Networking under palm trees
Part of SXSW’s success is that it offers a place where work meets pleasure (catching a 20 minute live concert while walking from one conference venue to the other? Thanks, Pandora!), and where the best meetings often happened were at random usually at the after-hour events. How about networking under palm trees while eating authentic Swiss Raclette (with a side of original Texas pulled pork)? No problem with the Swiss in town!

We set the stage for Switzerland meets Texas at our Swiss Cowboys and Girls Garden Party, a stone-throw away from the bustling downtown conference centers. And our calls were heard; more than 1000 RSVPs arrived in the days leading up to the party, and in the end several hundred visitors came to meet and mingle at the Swiss party – an event officially recommended by the organizers of SXSW in their newsletter.

2016 was busy busy busy
whenever i come back to my blog it’s to pull an old recipe up. i haven’t posted since February of 2016. last year was one of those years where life got REALLY busy. this year it’s gonna get real.
last year we decided to move out of the city and ended up finding a mid-century modern home perfect for us. bonus: it has a pool and we moved june 4 and spent the summer enjoying the hot outdoors - in between all the wedding planning, that is and the beginning of home renovations / improvements. we had a semi-DIY garden wedding on august 27 and then took off to italy for 2 glorious weeks (future post on italy later). early in the year my role at work changed dramatically and i was heads down learning a new business, going out to LA more often and meeting a whole new set of reporters. there were work trips to barcelona, DC, and Dallas, and the year had kicked off with fun travel too - austin to celebrate my dad turning 70, providence RI to visit ryan’s college, san francisco for a bachelorette weekend, san miguel de allende for my cousin’s ridiculously beautiful wedding, and tulum for another wedding. in april we were faced with the realization that our sick cat, Owl, had reached her time. putting her down on april 13 was a heartbreaking and eye-opening experience. we still miss her all the time and wonder how she would have liked moving to CT, living in this house with windows everywhere revealing the natural entertainment that chipmunks, birds, rabbits, deer, groundhogs and squirrels provide.
then came the fall and the exciting news that we’re pregnant! my spare time was quickly filled with lots and lots of reading about the insane things happening in my belly. i’m 5 months in now, and feel like it’s the calm before the storm. i have good energy and feel like my normal self again. i’m starting a new job next week and am slowly collecting things for the nursery, planning a baby shower with a massive lift from my SIL, and i’ve been cooking again ALOT. so for whatever reason, i felt drawn back to blogging.
i pulled together the following photo recap of the year and realized despite the losses of 2016 - bowie, our cat, prince, the outcome of the election - it was an amazing year for me personally. i’m reminded that no matter how passionately we feel about things ultimately out of our control, we can live each day happy, practicing gratitude and mindfulness in whatever brings us joy, peace or calm, enjoying the simple and best things life offers us every day.
Tumblr media
dad’s birthday, a pit stop in providence, wheeler moved back in with us, mud bath in calistoga springs, CA.
Tumblr media
lucky to go back to barcelona for work: kiss of death statue in cemetery poblenou, hiking trails in montserrat, the black madonna in the monastery at montserrat (it is said she will intercede to encourage fertility); and park guell.
Tumblr media
outtakes from our trip to san miguel de allende for the most beautiful and fun wedding
Tumblr media
owl’s last day, tulum: swimming in a cenote with my brother; wedding times with dad, ry and i on the beach
Tumblr media
solo visit to the white house, my dad skyping in at our engagement party!, two of my oldest friends from texas in CT for said party, The Strokes - how we spent our last night living in NYC.
Tumblr media
moving day, new home appreciation: beautiful foxglove flowers in our new yard, pool times, gardening
Tumblr media
summer: wedding planning flowers, site of a screening in LA, NYC views from the top of the freedom tower, a beach day at fort tilden
Tumblr media
wedding day then honeymoon! adriatic sea, pompeii, amalfi.
Tumblr media
honeymoon continued: polignano a mare, puglia, rome, monument to venus where we left an offering asking to be blessed in love and family (it worked!)
Tumblr media
more rome: eating gelato, cacio e pepe, at the pantheon, celebrating ryan’s 40th
Tumblr media
family time in the city, meeting my oldest friend’s third son in houston!, plane views flying back into NYC.
Tumblr media
we’re pregnant! it’s a boy, fall leaves beauty, love over hate, the bump debut.
