An OPEN LETTER to … This Weekend’s Celtic Creators …

Dear Jason Miller and Becky Schmidt of River City, Dan Milleson at Waterfront Hall, and Kelly Tucker – and staff – from the Greater Wheeling Sports and Entertainment Authority:

Holy Irish Bowling Batman, could there be anything else connected to our city’s annal Celtic Festival? The good folks at Wheeling Heritage and the owners and staff at River City have been throwing the city’s best Celtic Party for more than 25 years inside the Artisan Center, but a usually-quiet-on-the-weekends downtown Wheeling will be anything but bare of thousands of music fans wearing some kind of green. Why? Well, beginning at 11:30 a.m., there’s the Macdonald Pipe Band, The Celtic Lads, Gage Joseph, and Abbots Cross at the Artisan Center, The Bastard Bearded Irishmen on Water Street, and then Pennywise and The Scratch and the Dropkick Murphys at Wesbanco Arena. PLUS, tribute band “Almost Queen” will take the historic Capitol Theatre stage at 7:30 p.m.! So, let’s get this straight … once again, a public/private partnership has silenced the critics chanting, “THERE’S NOTHING TO DO IN WHEELING!” Now, we know it’s not the first time y’all have done this, and we know it won’t be the last, but we wanted you to know that it’s especially enjoyable for us to witness it each and every time.

Happy Bealltainn (or Beltane, in English)! This is the Gaelic festival that marks the coming of Summer, and is celebrated by food, community,  laughter, sex, and fire. Sounds pretty great, yes?

Bealltainn means The fires of Bel. Like most Pagan practices, this festival honours an agrarian pattern, and the earth cycle of harvest, fertility, and growth. These things were the domain of the Celtic sun god, Belenus, who is represented by fire.

So, today, my day will be filled with family, friends, food, and fire. It's a good day to be a Celt; and to celebrate with one. Celt or not, everyone is welcome so, find a fire and tuck in.

It’s  a time to gather with the people who share space in your life and celebrate abundance, gratitude, and life. Ok, it’s also a little about celebrating summer fruits, grains, and vegetables, and that we live in a world that gives us blueberries, blackberries, carrots, etc..

Typically, this is, and has been, a time to ask your ancestors, spirit guides, and deities for help with abundance in your life as well as give gratitude for all you have ‘reaped’. Yeah, we Celts are fierce, but we're also, always down for a gathering

Celtic Events Scheduled this Weekend in Downtown Wheeling

Downtown Wheeling will be rocking with Celtic activities on Saturday, March 2nd. The activities surround Dropkick Murphys St. Patrick’s Day Tour concert featuring Pennywise and The Scratch taking place at WesBanco Arena. Before the concert, Celtic activities will be happening at multiple venues around Downtown Wheeling for fans to enjoy.  Dropkick Murphys annual St. Patrick’s Day trek kicked off February 13 in San Jose, California and runs through the always-sold-out Boston hometown run of dates (March 14-17) culminating on St. Patrick’s Day. The tour will touch down in Wheeling, WV at WesBanco Arena on Saturday, March 2nd. In addition to Dropkick Murphys, the concert features punk legends Pennywise as special guests, with hotly-tipped Dublin rock band The Scratch opening the show.  Pittsburgh-based rockers Bastard Bearded Irishmen will be performing a pre-party at Waterfront Hall from 4-6 p.m.. The pre-show party at Waterfront Hall will also feature Jive Daisy from 12-3 p.m. There is a five-dollar cover charge for Bastard Bearded Irishmen and no cover for Jive Daisy. The 28th Annual Wheeling Celtic Celebration will be held at the Wheeling Artisan Center. The event will feature Celtic Food and a Celtic Marketplace. Additionally, music from Abbots Cross, Gage Joseph, Art & Ben, and the MacDonald Pipe Band will be featured. Admission is $10 for adults and just $5 for children twelve and under.  Finally, fans can come early to WesBanco Arena beginning at 3 p.m. for food and drinks at Heritage Port. Green Beer, craft & domestic Irish ales, and more will be available.
