2. When did they start developing feelings for each other? and 4. How long had they had those feelings? Vega is in love with love, so she gets crushes constantly. She had a crush on Chester, Bill, Orion, Murphy… So when she met Talbott she was like “ooooh Merlin here we go again”. She thought he was cute, mysterious, and his tragic life made her care about him a little more than she expected. As time passed, she realized those feelings were there to stay and after that conversation they had after they found his necklace, she knew she had more than a crush.
For Talbott it was different. The big step for him wasn’t realizing he liked her, it was befriending her, and after that those feelings developed pretty naturally. The only reason Talbott didn’t want to think about them was because he never thought she would reciprocate them, and tried to convince himself that it was just that he cared about her as a friend. But the day of the Celestial Ball, Andre basically forced him to go see his outfits, and the most cliché thing happened to him, he saw her with her starry dress and he had to admit to himself that nobody else had made his heart beat that fast. He spent the ball at the courtyard, and Vega found him there when the ball was almost ending, and they actually shared a dance there that only reaffirmed what he already knew. But that’s a story for another day.
It took them two whole years to confess those feelings to each other.
5. Where was their first date to and how did it go? I’m trying to follow game canon with these two so it was pretty similar to their first date in the game, but I would place it in Year 5 instead of Year 4. There’s some differences though. It was the teachers’s fault that it ended up happening: after Snape read her note in class, all her classmates were talking about it non-stop, even in class, so the teachers noticed (“the kids are annoyingly chatty today, what happened?”), Snape told them, Flitwick already knew about Vega’s feelings and had told McGonagall and Sprout, and McGonagall was so happy since she is close to Talbott and could see how he felt about her. But she didn’t want to tell him, so she tried to make him remember what happened with the memory charm so he would ask Vega about that day. Vega ended up confessing on the courtyard and Talbott followed her to the library, where he agreed to go on a date with her. She had told him that her friends were organizing it, even when she had told them she wasn’t going to ask anyone, that’s why the date went so wrong, they felt really out of place. At night, in the courtyard, after they talked about it, Talbott confessed his feelings (all that thing about her name and the stars that I have already talk about too much and now I’m writing a fanfic about it 😅). Nothing else happened because they heard Filch coming and run away in their animagi forms.
6. What was the most awkward moment they have shared? The time they were the only two Ravenclaw students staying for Christmas and Miss Pomfrey decided to give them “the talk” and they couldn’t even look at each other after that. Especially because they knew the teachers knew what Miss Pomfrey planned to do since some of them had a pretty amused look on their faces.
10. Do they have any inside jokes with each other? Looooooots of cat jokes, since now the two most important people present in Talbott’s life (McGonagall and Vega) are cat animagi (and Vega has a cat that loves Talbott and won’t leave him alone), and Talbott used to dislike them. And bird puns too. At first she thought they may bother him but then he started making them and now she won’t stop.
Thanks for the asks! ~ 💙

chapter one;

SUMMARY— ORION SOMMERS HAS MANY WAYS OF DOING THINGS. WHEN SHE WAS JUST EIGHT SHE WAS PLACED IN AN ASTRONOMY CLUB UNWILLINGLY BY HER MOTHER, WHOM THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR HER SHY DAUGHTER. SHE LOVED CELESTIAL OBJECTS FOR MANY REASONS, ONE BEING THEY ALL LOOKED THE SAME, BUT ON THE INSIDE THEY WERE DIFFERENT. ONE COULD BE HOTTER OR OLDER THAN THE OTHER AND SHE THOUGHT HUMANS WERE JUST THE SAME. SHE SOON CAME TO FIND THAT HER FAMILY WHO LOOKED LIKE EVERYONE ELSES WAS DIFFERENT, JUST LIKE THE STARS. THROUGHOUT HER LIFE SHE FOUND THINGS OUT THE HARD WAY, BY BEING CURIOUS. FOR INSTANCE, WHEN SHE WAS FOURTEEN SHE FOUND HER FATHER PASSED OUT IN HIS STUDY WITH A NEEDLE IN HIS RIGHT HAND, AT LEAST THE FIRST TIME IT CAME AS A SHOCK.
She walked through the pouring rain, she of course had to forget her umbrella today. Her hair was frizzed up after she took the time to straighten it. She was annoyed with the weatherman at this point. She grabbed the blue beanie out of her bag and placed it on her head. She lived about five minutes from the coffee shop that her and her friends met at weekly, but the rain was causing traffic on the sidewalk. She had been out of town the previous week, so Alex thought the group lunch should be a day earlier in celebration of her return. There was really no reason for the weekly meetings since they all usually saw one another any other day of the week, but it was still good to see everyone at once. They always went to the same small cafe, it was cute. Run by and older lady and her grandson, whom they never saw.
It had a certain homey feeling that kept the group coming back each week. It might’ve just been the record player in the corner and the amazing cinnamon rolls, but it was a very welcoming place. Orion was in her second year of college, and she was very glad she found a place like the cafe. She continued walking down the sidewalk hoping she wasn’t the last one there, which was usually the case. She turned the corner and was only a few feet away from the warm building. She saw her friends in there already from where she stood. “Shit.” She breathed out.
The bell rang above her head when she walked through the door, and the smell of coffee and cinnamon flooded her nose. “Hello dear.” Mary, the owner of the cafe, spoke from the counter. “Good afternoon.” She spoke and smiled in her direction. “The usual?” Mary wrote on a pad already knowing the answer. “Yes please.”
She walked over to the table that her friends were seated. “Look who’s finally here.” Romil spoke from his seat by Alex. “It was raining!” She slid next to Suri who pulled her shoulders in for a hug. “Glad you could make it.” The girl spoke besides her. “Oh, I got your notes!” Alex reaches over to pull something out of her bag. She placed the stapled papers in front of Orion. “I printed them out for you to make it easier, but knowing you you’ll probably rewrite them anyway.” Alex smiled at her. “You are a lifesaver Alex, a true saint!” Orion dramatically blew her friend kisses.
“So, how’ve you been bug?” Suri reached out and placed her hand on the girl’s she was speaking to. Even though she was being discrete Orion could hear the underlying tone, and suddenly the whole table was looking at her. “It was hard.” She cracked. “I mean I knew it would be, but I didn’t expect it to be that hard. It was tough on Iris to. I think that was the hardest part though. I think I’ll be fine though, might take time to get back in the swing of things but I’m okay.” She gave a tight lipped smiles and a nod to the table. “Thanks for telling us at least, we know how hard that can be sometimes. We are gonna help you through this, okay?” Alex reaches over and put her hand on top of Suri’s. “Guess it’s my turn. Love you, Orion.” He put his hand on Alex’s while everyone cracked into giggles.
“Here’s your order sweets!” Mary slid her coffee and banana muffin on the table. “Thank you, Mary.” She smiled at the lady. “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you guys! My grandson is finally coming back from his tour tomorrow and he will be helping here. He’s a bit older than all of you but I think you all will get along very well.” She smiled at all of them. “Tour?” Suri leaned forward. Orion elbowed her in the side for being so blunt. “Yes, he’s a musician. Very good too. He’s just getting started but I have a feeling he’ll be as big as Bob Dylan someday.” She pointed to the Bob Dylan poster above their table. “I’m sure he will, we’d be glad to meet him. Romil needs another male friend, to tell all his boy secrets to.” Alex patted her boyfriends cheek. “I do not have boy secrets!” He shook his head. “He’s going to love you guys! If you all come around tomorrow let me know so I can introduce you lot!” She walked from the table.
“So that’s why he’s never here.” Suri spoke from her spot. “I wonder if he’s any good.” Orion swallowed the bite of her muffin. “Has to be, Mary does not lie.” She shook her head. “Don’t know if he’s Bob Dylan good though.” She shrugged. “Wonder if he’s going to school.” Romil questioned out loud. “Guess we will find out tomorrow.” Suri reached over and pinched off of Orion’s muffin.
“Do you have to go to the library tomorrow?” Alex directed her eyes to Orion. “Yeah, at like ten though. We could meet here at three?” She worked at a library as an assistant, it was a pretty good pay for her and her one bedroom apartment. Plus, she loved working there. “Sounds good to me.” Alex smiled as did the rest of them.
When Orion was in her freshman year at college she met Suri. She accidentally ran into the girl on her commute to her class and then really, the rest was history. They found out they had a class together, and decided to put together a study group. Orion was later introduced to Alex, then the study group got bigger. Romil didn’t come around until about eight months ago — he was introduced as Alex’s friend and soon became her boyfriend. The rest of the group was single. Suri hadn’t had a girlfriend since junior year of highschool, and well Orion, had never had a boyfriend. She was pretty sure she was straight at this point, just not dateable.
She mainly wanted to focus on her grades, at least that’s what she told herself. Sometimes when things would get hard she did wonder why no one’s ever wanted to date her. She thought she was a good person, and maybe not the best looking person but she wasn’t all around unattractive. Her mom was more worried about it than her it seemed. Always asking her when she was gonna bring someone home for her to meet. It was nerve wracking really. Iris had already had two significant others, and Orion wasn’t even close to one. After the small meeting with her friends she left the cafe then made her way back to her small apartment.
She didn’t have any work, that she knew of anyway. So she grabbed a glass of orange juice and plopped on the couch. She wanted to google Mary’s grandson, but was that weird? She didn’t even remember his name through, and she wasn’t completely sure it even came up in the conversation. She reached over for her laptop and pulled up netflix. She was recently obsessed with ‘Supernatural’, so she clicked resume on the episode she was on. It wasn’t long until she felt her head tilting towards the armrest on her couch and her eyes were fluttering with sleepiness.
.
.
. . .. .
The walk to the library was a usual one for Orion. She spent four hours there five days a week, shelving books and sometimes tagging the new ones. When she wasn’t needed she was scanning the astronomy section of the shelves. There was a little corner in the back of the library that she also hung around, listening to music or doing work. She was usually alone in the corner of the library, but today she wasn’t. She had just got done replacing textbooks for the new students when she walked to her corner. The corner of books was shared between the music and astronomy section, and as she walked over she took notice of the tall boy scanning over the music section. She stood there for a few seconds questioning if she should say anything or not. When he noticed her his eyebrows rose a bit and she was now eye to eye with striking green eyes. She took a moment before she said something to him so she wouldn’t fuck up her words. “Hi.” She shyly said with a small smile. “Hello, do you need me to move somewhere else?” He smiled back slightly and put his thumb in between the pages of the book he was reading to bookmark it.
“Oh no, you’re fine! I’m just usually the only one over in this section, but i can share.” She jokingly stated. She noticed the tattoos caressing his arms, she noticed the rose first. “I’m Orion.” She reached out a hand that wasn’t holding her Psych book and he took it in his large one and shook it up and down, “Harry.” She took that time to notice he had a english accent, and a very deep raspy voice that slipped through her ears like honey. “Did you just transfer here? Sorry if I’m prying, i’ve just never seen you around,” She tilted her head at him a little, and he shook his head and smiled. “No, you’re fine. I did transfer though my grandmother lives around here, and I wanted to be closer to her.” Suddenly everything clicked. “Wait, is your grandmother Mary?” Her eyebrows furrowed. “Yeah she is. You know her?” He shook his head. “Yeah actually, my friends and I have a hangout spot at her cafe. She’s an angel, truly. She was actually talking to us about you, it only just now clicked that you’re the Harry she was talking about.” She giggled, and he smiled with her. “Well, here I am. She loves to talk about me when I’m not around so hopefully she didn’t say anything too bad about me.” His lips quirked up in a smirk.
“She’s way too nice to say anything bad! We were supposed to meet you tonight actually, but guess I’m just lucky.” She said it with no double-meaning. The two of them stayed like that for about an hour, talking about everything and anything. He told her about his recent tour and she learned that he really is a passionate musician. He asked her about her friends, and she kindly explained that they were a little wild at first but easy to get used to. He seemed to think she was pretty funny, and Orion took it as a compliment every time he laughed at one of her jokes. Time went by and she soon realized that it was time for her to be off. “Oh shit, I just got off. Time flies. I’ll see you later Harry,” She smiled and waved as she walked out of their corner.
Thank God he was nice, she continued to walk away. She hoped she concealed her nerves around him well enough, she wasn’t that good around new people, but she didn’t see to freak him out that much. The walk back to her apartment was a pretty short one. The traffic on the sidewalks wasn’t as bad today, which was a relief to Orion. She hated when she had to trip over her own feet to ignore stepping on others’. She passed the same animal adoption center she passed everyday and stopped at the window to wave at the sweet creatures. She always loved living in New York. It was always sweet to her. Despite the stereotypes of everyone from New York being rude and the rain being constant, she found the diversity in it beautiful. She loved how you could walk down the street and find an animal adoption center, then turn the corner and find a bar.
When she reached her apartment steps she reached into her bag and dug her key out. It was nearing fall and she was debating decorating for Halloween. Usually, some local kids would knock on her door, but it being a college town there wasn’t many. The creaky door opened and she kicked off her shoes as she entered. She had about an hour until she had to meet her friends and it occurred to her that she would also soon be seeing Harry again. She lit a fall-ish candle in her kitchen and pulled out a two dollar turkey sandwich from the deli down the street from her fridge. She felt a little lonely in her one-bedroom apartment. Sometimes she debated moving out and getting a roommate, or even just getting a pet. She walked over to her bookshelf and picked up her recent favorite, ‘Call Me By Your Name’. She always loved a good romance novel, and this was one of the best.
She decided she would read for thirty minutes then head to the cafe, she also really hoped Harry would like her friends. `

Locations 🔅: What’s a place that holds special meaning to them? Why?
With its dark wood furniture, it’s star maps, globes of the heavens and dusty old scolls, the Athenaeum Astrologicum in Ishgard was a safe haven for Silene and Heliaux in their younger years. Although the twins never found the same draw to the heavens as their mother, they would often accompany her to the small but intimately familiar building for their lessons on the celestial bodies and their movements.
In whispers she would take down large tomes from the bookshelves with dusty gilded pages and point out the movement of sun and moon and the dots that made up the constellations in the sky. The Fury was one they learned early, of course, but also Oschon and Rhalgar and other deities not usually spoken of in the See.
“They say your life can be seen in the movements of the stars at the time of your birth.” Leetos voice was a soft but reverent hush. It tickled her children to find out they were ‘fishgoats’- Heliaux hiding a laugh behind both hands, her more serious brother wrinkling his nose, unamused. She would point out the two forgotten constellations of old Sharlayan to her raven haired and golden eyed twins that bore their names.
Although the twins rarely visit the Athenaeum Astrologicum anymore the building remains a warm and musty reminder of gentler days in Ishgard. The book their mother used to show them now rests in Heliauxs personal library and she, like her mother, points out the constellations her own children are named after- Sirius and Orion. Her flaxen haired and golden eyed daughter smiles always at the mention of the body that rules over the night sky that she, like her uncle, was named for.
La Luna.

Happy Vernal Equinox!
Two few minutes before 6 pm Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, our northern Spring, also known as the Vernal Equinox, officially begins! Here’s why…
(Above: At the moment of the Vernal Equinox on Wednesday, March 20, the sun’s path along the Ecliptic (yellow plane) will carry it across the Celestial Equator (blue plane), leaving the sun to spend the next 6 months in the northern half of the sky and delivering increased daylight hours and radiant heat on the Earth’s northern hemisphere.)
The Celestial Equator is an imaginary circle around the sky that sits directly above the Earth’s equator. It divides the sky into two bowls - the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Meanwhile, as Earth orbits around the sun, the sun appears to travel eastward through the distant stars, tracing out another circle called the ecliptic. Due to the 23.5° tilt of the Earth’s axis of rotation, the Celestial Equator and the Ecliptic are tipped with respect to each other. Think of them as two hula hoops with the same centre, Earth - but one is tilted so that they intersect at only two spots. (The motion of the sun that I’ve referring to above is the one that causes new stars to appear each season, and is NOT the one that carries the sun across the sky every day. The first case is due to the Earth’s year-long orbit and the second motion is due to the Earth’s daily rotation.)
The sun’s eastward motion along the ecliptic circle covers about one degree per day. At the precise moment of the Vernal Equinox, the sun is “stepping over” the equator (where the hula hoops cross) and its apparent motion is carrying it into the northern half of the sky. Six months from now, on the Autumnal Equinox, it will again cross the equator heading into the southern half of the sky.
This produces two interesting effects. Firstly, for the next six months, the sun will spend the majority of each day in our northern hemisphere sky, overhead of the lucky folks in North America, Europe, and Asia! More daily sun time means warmer air and longer daylight hours! At the same time, folks in the Southern hemisphere have to accept shorter, colder days and longer nights (Warmly dressed astronomers don’t mind long winter nights!). Secondly, on the day of the equinoxes, we experience about 12 hours each of daytime and night-time (it varies by latitude). This is where the word equinox (Latin for equal night) comes from.
The times around the equinoxes also offer better chances to see the aurorae at high northern and southern latitudes. Just as two bar magnets lined up with their poles in the same direction repel one another strongly, the Earth’s magnetic field repels the sun’s field. At the equinoxes, the Earth’s axis is tilted neither towards nor away from the sun, so the two “magnets” aren’t as parallel, reducing Earth’s ability to deflect the sun’s field and the charged particles that trigger aurorae in our upper atmosphere.
The Moon and Planets
For most of this week, the moon will remain in view in the evening sky. On Sunday night, it will be a bright gibbous (more than half-illuminated) orb between Cancer (the Crab) and Leo (the Lion). On Monday night, the moon will land less than two finger widths to the left of Leo’s brightest star, Regulus.
(Above: On Monday evening the orbital motion of the moon will place it 2 degrees to the upper left of Leo’s brightest star, Regulus, as shown here for 9 pm EDT.)
On Wednesday night the moon will reach its full phase. Although technically it occurs a few hours past the equinox, this is the final full moon of winter. The March full moon, known as the Worm Moon, Crow Moon, Sap Moon or Lenten Moon, always shines in or near the stars of Leo or Virgo (the Maiden). Full moons always rise in the east as the sun sets, and set in the west at sunrise. When fully illuminated, the moon’s geology is enhanced, especially the contrast between the ancient cratered highlands and the younger, darker, smoother maria. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landings by humans.
After Wednesday, the moon will begin to rise in late evening and wane in phase. From Thursday to Sunday, it will traverse the stars of Virgo and then Libra (the Scales).
Mars will continue to be an easy planet to see every evening this week, but only for a couple of hours after dusk. By midnight, Mars will set in the west. Once the sky has darkened, look for Mars’ medium-bright, reddish pinpoint of light less than halfway up the western sky. Mars has been slowly shrinking in size and brightness as we increase our distance from it little-by-little. Distant Uranus is situated two fist diameters below Mars – but it’s too low for observing nowadays.
(Above: This week, Mars will continue to gleam as an ever-diminishing, reddish pinpoint located about halfway up the western sky after dusk, as shown here at 9 pm local time.)
The eastern pre-dawn sky continues to host a spectacular parade of three bright planets. Bright Jupiter will rise first, at about 2:30 am local time. By 7 am, it should still be visible in the southern sky. Yellowish Saturn, will rise at about 4:30 am local time and will become lost in the southeastern twilight before 7 am.
Our sister planet Venus, now markedly closer to the sun, is starting to become engulfed in the dawn twilight. Look for Venus’ as a bright beacon sitting quite low in the east-southeastern dawn sky from 6 am local time until sunrise. In a telescope, Venus will exhibit a gibbous (more than half-illuminated) phase. If you have trouble seeing Saturn, search about midway between Jupiter and Venus.
(Above: The eastern pre-dawn sky continues to deliver a parade of bright planets, starting with Jupiter, then Saturn, and then Venus, as shown here at 6:30 am local time. Venus’ orbit, shown in red, is swinging the bright planet lower, towards the sun.)
The Brightest Stars
During full moon periods, only the brightest stars can still be spotted with unaided eyes. At this time of year, most of those stars are the ones that form the Winter Hexagon asterism. Start by finding the extremely bright star Sirius sitting low in the southern evening sky at 9 pm local time. From there, look for bluish Rigel sitting 2.5 fist diameters to Sirius’ upper right, then look well above Rigel for warm-tinted Aldebaran, and continue to Aldebaran’s upper left to reach yellowish Capella at the top of the asterism. Now descend on the hexagon’s left side. The bright matched pair of stars Castor and Pollux is three fist diameters to the lower left of Capella. Finally, bright white Procyon is well below those twins – roughly between them and Sirius.
The only other bright star is Regulus in Leo. That white star sits about 3.7 fit diameters to the left (east ) of Procyon.
(Above: the full moonlight generally overwhelms all but the brightest stars. The Winter Hexagon composed of the bright stars Sirius, Rigel, Aldebaran, Capella, Castor, Pollus, and Procyon will be visible on mid-March evenings, including Wednesday’s Full Sap Moon. The point marked ASP is the point of the sky opposite the sun. The moon is always fully illuminated when it’s near that location. The sky is shown here for 10 pm local time, )
Evening Zodiacal Light
For about half an hour after dusk between today and the new moon on April 5, look west-southwest for a broad wedge of faint light rising from the horizon and centered on the ecliptic. This is the zodiacal light - reflected sunlight from interplanetary particles of matter concentrated in the plane of the solar system. The glow will be centred on the horizon directly below Mars. Try to observe from a location without light pollution, and don't confuse the zodiacal light with the brighter Milky Way to the northwest. I posted an image of it here.
Pointing at Polaris
If you missed last week’s information about Polaris, the North Star, I posted it with sky charts here.
Keep looking up, and enjoy the sky when you do. I love questions and requests - so, send me some!

Celestial Surprise
Author’s Note: Hey guys this is my first story posted on here so any helpful suggestions would be great! Also, I apologize ahead of time for any writing mistakes on my part!
Summary: It’s Sirius’ birthday and his oh so loving boyfriend seems to have forgotten or has he?
Warnings: very slight angst, lots of wolfstar fluff, foul language
Remus had been careful all morning not to wake up his boyfriend as he prepared everything for tonight. He worriedly looked toward the window, where you could see the storm crash violently against the window.
Damn. He thought. Of course, the universe would choose today of all days to wage a storm against Hogwarts. Remus chewed the inside of his lip worriedly as he tried to think of what else he could do for Sirius.
“Mmhm Moons?”
“Sirius the bloody hell you doing up love?” Remus whispered to his still half-asleep boyfriend.
“Guess I couldn’t wait any longer to celebrate my birthday babe,” Sirius said with a smirk. Remus could barely keep his eyes off of him, as Sirius got out of bed.
“However, the real question is why are you up so early Moons,” Sirius asked with a mischievous grin plastered on his face.
“Ah, I um was going to the library too, ah, to meet Lily before Charms class.”
“Re there’s no need to-”
“Pads I really have to go. I’ll see you at lunch love?”
“Of course so long as-”
“Great!” Was all Remus said as he ran out the door books in hand. Sirius staring dumbfounded at the door as he thought Not even a happy birthday love? Sirius looked out toward the storm as it continued to rage against the window.
“Today’s off to a grand start.”
(Remus POV)
Remus hurriedly ran to the library as he searched for Lily and James.
How the hell am I supposed to get Sirius’ surprise to work now! Remus thought worriedly as he scanned the library for vibrant red hair. Remus was peering through each aisle as he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder.
“Re what’s the matt-”
“Merlin’s beard Lily!”
“Last time I checked my hair was red, not white.”
Remus suddenly grabbed Lily’s shoulders. “I need your help with Sirius’ surprise.”
“Re it’s pouring how are you gonna…..” Lily’s eyes got bigger and a smile started to grow as a realization hit her.
“Re you sap! Sirius will definitely love it.”
“You got any materials I can use?”
“Do I ever!” Lily quickly started dashing to the Gryffindor common room with a relieved Remus not too far behind.
(Sirius POV)
This day just keeps getting better. Sirius thought bitterly. Not only was it storming like the end of the world outside, but it seemed that his mates seemed to forget that today was his birthday not only that they were all but avoided him. Throughout the day as he tried to talk to either Remus, Prongs, Peter, or hell even Lily, they all seemed to conveniently remember something they had to do. Sirius was, well to put it simply was pissed off by it. Around mid-afternoon, as he walked back to the common room, he decided that he was going to confront one of them.
I don’t give a rats ass what the hell they’ve got going on I’m going to make them talk. The first one f them I see. As Sirius entered the common room, he noticed Remus running down the stairs from the boy’s dormitory mumbling under his breath. Sirius walked up to his boyfriend with a storm worse than the one outside, in his eyes. Remus not paying any attention bumps into his boyfriend.
“Shit I’m so sorry! I was just in a hurry. Sirius!” Remus says, eyes wide at the anger coming off of his boyfriend.
“Re we need to talk-”
“I was just looking for you-”
“Remus John Lupin you and I are going to have a conversation upstairs now,” Sirius growled a bit to loudly as the rest of the common room grew quiet.
“I- alright fine,” Remus replied, defeated. Almost instantaneously, Sirius grabs his boyfriends hand and drags him to the only place where they’ll have privacy.
(Remus POV)
Remus’ heart was pounding as Sirius dragged him to their safe place. They hadn’t figured out a name for the hidden room they found as first years, but it was theirs and theirs alone. As the entered the room, it had a single bed toward a window on the left and a small table with some papers and quills all over it. Usually, the sight brought comfort to Remus however, it seemed to do the opposite as Sirius leaned on the table. Remus hated this, the main reason being that Sirius was being deadly silent and that was the worst. The room remained silent for what seemed like forever. The thick tension in the air was broken when Sirius said a single word.
“Why?”
“Pads I don’t-”
“DO NOT PLAY DUMB WITH ME LUPIN!” If looks could kill, Remus would be dead on the floor. When Remus didn’t answer, Sirius continued,
“WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH EVERYONE IGNORING ME LIKE THE DAMN PLAGUE TODAY!” Sirius yells as his eyes bear into Remus.
“IT’S MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY MOONS OR DID YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE SEEM TO FORGET THAT! ALL I WANTED WAS TO SPEND IT WITH MY MATES AND MY BOYFRIEND!” When Sirius finishes tears are streaming down his face as he breathes heavily. Remus is standing where he’s at. He looks at his boyfriend and sees the hurt and pain him and his “surprise” have done. Remus finally gathering himself goes toward his boyfriend and holds him.
“Is that too much to ask?” Sirius croaks as Remus holds him tightly.
“I’m so sorry my love. This is my fault.” Remus says his voice calm with guilt covered in it. Remus lets go of Sirius and holds him at arm's length.
“Love I need you to follow me somewhere.”
(Sirius POV)
Sirius looks at his boyfriend angrily.
“Re this is serious you really-”
“Dammit, Sirius just let me show you your fucking birthday surprise!”
“W-what?” Exasperated, Remus grabs Sirius’ hand, and it’s Sirius’ turn to be dragged. The entire way there Sirius feels his embarrassment and anger at his behavior. As they walk Remus is mumbling to himself and Sirius notices that it has gotten noticeably darker outside with the storm continuing. All too soon they arrive in front of the observatory room. The big wooden doors are shut, but James, Lily, and Peter are in front of the door, each with a dopey grin plastered on their faces and a present in their hands.
“ It’s about time you showed up Pads! Late to your own surprise that's just ill-mannered.” Lily says as everyone, except Remus, hands their presents to Sirius.
“ Wha- How?”
“ You’ll find out soon enough mate,” James replies as all three f them head out
“ Try not to be back to late kiddos”
Sirius turns to look at Remus but finds his boyfriend has already gone into the room. Not long after Sirius follows suit. What Sirius sees in the room finds him dumbstruck. There are pillows and blankets on the floor accompanied by a picnic and a few enchanted candles hovering above that are only bright enough to see the food. What truly amazes him is the near black blanket hovering close to the ceiling with small white orbs of light that make up the stars- no wait, the constellations across the entire thing.
“I’m sorry Sirius.” Sirius whips his head to Remus in confusion
“What are you talking about moons? If anyone should be sorry it should be me.” Tears in Sirius’ dark eyes as he continues.
“I doubted my friend and the love of my life. I thought you all abandoned me just like my family. I’m so sorry Remus.”
“But the fault is on me too. I should’ve told you at least about the surprise being planned. But,” Remus slowly turned Sirius toward him and began to kneel on one knee as he pulled out a tiny black box.
“Re what are you-”
“Sirius Orion Black since our first year I’ve always loved you. I may have not realized it then but I know in my heart it’s true. You made me so happy when you became my boyfriend our fourth year, even now in our seventh and final year at Hogwarts. After we graduate, would you do me the honor of being my husband.” Remus says holding the open black box to Sirius. Sirius wide-eyed looks at the silver band as he answers.
“Yes.”
“Pads-”
“Yes, Remus I will become your husband!”
Sirius quickly gathers his boyfriend in a passionate kiss, and well dear reader you can guess what that had led to for the rest of the night.
Fin.

Grand Central Terminal and Station* is an exquisite train station and terminus that was dreamed up by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who - working in tandem with architect Whitney Warren - was able to make the station a reality on February 2nd, 1913. "Today, Grand Central hosts over 750,000 visitors and tourists daily and is open between 5:30 a.m. and 2:00 a.m." [into from the travel awaits website.]
What I find most fascinating about Grand Central, however - aside from the quasi-hidden and free to use Vanderbilt tennis court hidden in the lower levels - is the ceiling.
"The centerpiece of the Main Concourse is its celestial ceiling, which features the 12 zodiac constellations. At some point during the design, the order of the constellations was painted in reverse, with west and east flipped. The design was eventually corrected, but Orion still faces backward.
In June, 1945, renovations on the roof of the Main Concourse were completed. The mural, which had fallen victim to numerous leaks, was repaired, and a new, duplicate mural was painted. The 12 constellations are composed of thousands of gold leaf stars, with some twinkling lights dotting the sky.
If you look up at the giant zodiac on the ceiling, you’ll find a small, dark brick next to Cancer, the crab. This brick is a reminder of what the station’s ceiling looked like before it was cleaned during the 1998 restoration project. According to John Canning Company, which cleaned and restored the mural, the brick represents the two-inch thick grime covering the ceiling, caused by decades of air pollution."
(*the station previously referred to the underground portion and its now considered more accurate to refer to the entire area - the underground portions as well as the upper levels where they have dining and shopping areas - as "Grand Central," if you want to include any/all of the terminals and station.)
I also want to give a cyber shout out to the amazing book "Hello NY: An Illustrated Love Letter to the Five Boroughs" by Julia Rothman. It's such a fun read (I take it out from the library annually) and I credit the author with teaching me all about the underground and not-that-well-known Vanderbilt tennis court, the "Tugboat Graveyard" (more on that later), as well as the Troll museum and so much more.
Perhaps grab a copy of Hello NY today? Support an awesome creator? :)

I have slightly more energy today
I feel a little less like I got hit by a truck today. I’m currently spending time catching up on some much needed leisure reading. I haven’t read Harry Potter in a while. But first, I think it’s time I introduced the rest of my spirits, and explained more about how the Celestial Spirit side of my magic works.
I’ve mentioned previously that Celestial Spirit magic is similar to requip magic in that it draws from a different dimensional plane. However, it’s a little more complicated. You see, each constellation, and even some individual stars, has a Spirit, and each of those spirits has a key. Some constellations have more than one of the same Spirit. Those are the more common spirits, and are attached to silver keys. They are generally the least powerful, and less useful in battle, but they each are very special and useful in their own ways. Crux, the Southern Cross, is one of these. As are Lyra, the Lyre, and Horologium, the Clock.
Some constellations only have one or two spirits, but they have multiple keys, and the spirits divide their time between their key holders. These are attached to jeweled silver keys. Much more rare, and generally powerful. These are generally better suited for combat, and take more power to summon, as well. Aquila the Eagle, and Orion the Huntsman both belong to this group. Many of these, particularly those who are animals like Aquila, can shift between shapes. Draco the Dragon is the most powerful of them, and he is on par with the Zodiac spirits.
I’ve already mentioned the Zodiacs. They are basically the leaders of the spirits, at least they have been for a long time. Leo is their leader. The Zodiacs only have one key, a golden key. Lucy and I are the only mages since ancient times to be able to summon more than two of these at once. Summoning them takes an extraordinary amount of power, which is why so many celestial spirit mages tend to stay in the background while their spirits fight. It’s also why most mages underestimate us.
The only spirits that take more power to summon than the Zodiacs are the platinum keys. These keys do not belong to constellations, but to individual stars. Generally either the brightest stars in the sky, or stars at the heart of another spirit, particularly the Zodiacs. They are very wary of humans, and it takes a great deal to gain their trust. Unless they deem you worthy, they’re impossible to summon at all. If you try to summon one without enough energy, unlike the others, you can’t stop. It will kill you. Luckily, after the first summoning, these spirits will use the their own power to fight. All the mage has to do is call. But they should only be used in the gravest of situations. We don’t know how many of these there are, because most of them have been missing for centuries, and some for over a thousand years. I’ve only found one so far: Regulus. The Heart of the Lion. When summoned together, Regulus and Leo are incredibly powerful. From what Regulus has said, he will be the easiest to convince and summon. Which is ominous, because he took a massive amount of power. I passed out the first time. Admittedly, I was mid-battle trying to stop someone else from stealing his key, but still.
There is one more Spirit. He doesn’t actually have a key. The Celestial Spirit King rules all the spirits. Only a mage capable of summoning three Zodiac spirits at once can summon him, and to do so they must sacrifice a golden key that they have a close bond with. Lucy had to do it with Aquarius, her oldest friend, a long time ago. The key eventually reappeared in the world, but it nearly broke Lucy. Luckily, the king is a friend to us both. He’s very kind, actually.
Now, about the individual spirits.
Silver keys:
Antlia- the air pump. She doesn’t actually look like a pump. She looks like a person. Has wind magic. Can be good at dealing with bad weather. Very shy.
Apus- the bird of paradise. Like several others, he’s good for passing messages. Great at causing distractions. He does fly, but he can’t really carry anything. Very full of himself.
Ara- the altar. Very intelligent and empathetic. Good for undercover work. Her main skill is actually puzzle solving.
Auriga- the chariot. One of the most useful silver keys. Auriga is perfect for very fast land transport. If you have an injured party member, or you need to lead someone on a chase, or a quick getaway, Auriga is very helpful. He’s also very respectful.
Bootes- the herdsman. Great with animals. There’s been a fair few monster attacks where I’ve used him to get animals out of the way, and he’s gotten them to actually help in some missions, like with bandits.
Caelum- the chisel. Caelum is basically a glorified weapon to most. He can switch between a sword form and cannon form. He’s actually quite good at helping to build things when given the chance though.
Camelopardalis- the giraffe. I call her Cami at her request. She can actually change her height as needed. Good for reaching high places if there’s not enough space for a different spirit to fly. Very boisterous.
Canes Venatici- the hunting dogs. As their name suggests, they’re very good hunters and trackers and very fast.
Canis Minor- the little dog. Also called Nikora as a species. Does not look like a dog. Most celestial spirit mages keep them basically as pets. Very loyal and sweet. Lucy’s is named Plue. Mine is Nala (no, it wasn’t a lion king reference. I named her before the lion king, or even Disney, was a concept).
Cetus- the whale. Needs water to be summoned. I’ve used Cetus to stop a tsunami before. Very intelligent. A little overpowered for a normal water fight though.
Chamaeleon- the chameleon. Master of disguise, very good at sneaking and getting me into places.
Circinus- the compass. Not that compass. The kind that makes a circle. Circinus is a good puzzle-solver, and is very good at math. He’s kind of a downer sometimes, but we love him anyway.
Columba- the dove. A peacemaker. Columba can calm heightened emotions to a certain point and make it easier to come to a resolution. Also delivers messages, especially over long distances.
Coma Berenice’s- Berenice’s hair. I still don’t understand this legend. This one is meant to be summoned with another, generally female, to increase agility and speed.
Corona Australis- the southern crown. Summoned with a southern constellation to increase strength and endurance.
Corona Borealis- the northern crown. Does the same, but with northern constellations.
Corvus- the crow. Messenger, but is also good for distractions and quick getaways, because his special ability is to cause instant darkness for his opponent in a certain area.
Crater- the cup. Crater can actually brew potions, of which there are many, with many uses. He produces them in a tenth of the normal brewing time.
Crux- the southern cross. He’s the keeper of the library in the Celestial Spirit world. He’s the go-to for research and questions and analysis of data.
Cygnus- the swan. Cygnus actually is a fighter, though his endurance is lacking. He’s fast and graceful though.
Delphinus- the dolphin. Great for a water fight, very fast and strong. And a total sweetheart.
Dorado- the swordfish. Works well with Delphinus. Unlike Delphinus, he can fight out of the water, but he still has to be near water, or on a boat.
Equuleus- the little horse. He’s adorable. He can’t really carry people, but he can carry equipment. He’s a little clumsy, but he’s got great stamina.
Eridanus- the river. One of the strongest silver keys, he has incredible control over water. But he can’t control salt water. Only fresh water.
Fornax- the furnace. Some control over fire. Very good in cold climates.
Grus- the crane. His balance is extraordinary. He’s a fighter, and a protegee of Libra.
Horologium- the clock. Not just for telling time. In times of extreme danger, Horologium can place the endangered person inside himself and protect them. He’s nearly invincible, but he can’t actually fight.
Hydrus- the water snake. Very sneaky and fast. When summoned with Hydra, it makes Hydra much stronger. Has poison.
Indus- the Indian. He showed up much later in my life than some of them. It was not a fun time in Earth’s history. He’s a good fighter, and very in-tune with nature. He can communicate with it and even manipulate it, plants and animals alike. But he’s very sad.
Lacerta- the lizard. Sneaky little bugger. Can regrow limbs to a point. Can shift between humanoid and lizard forms.
Leo Minor- the little lion. We call him Luke. He’s. Well. In my first life, Loke and I were kind of together. We’re not anymore, though we’re still best friends, but. Um. Let’s just say Luke was born as half-Spirit and decided to become a full spirit later.
Lepus- the rabbit. Very quick. A little jittery. Good messenger, good at making and undoing traps, ironically enough.
Lynx- the lynx. A fighter. Very fast. Very strong.
Lyra- the harp. She’s a musician, obviously. She’s good at finding just the right song for a situation. She’s actually quite smart, too.
Mensa- the table. Intelligent. Good planner. Good at strategy. Literally is a table though.
Microscopium- the microscope. Good at noticing the small details that I might miss. Very smart. Often assists Crux in analysis.
Musca- the fly. A great spy. That’s literally his main job.
Norma- the surveyor’s level. Is a builder. Humanoid. Works with several other spirits to repair and build just about anything.
Octans- the octant. Navigation expert. Works with Pyxis to plot a course to just about anywhere.
Pavo- the peacock. Actually a fighter. Uses his feathers as projectiles.
Pictor- the easel. Similar magic to Reedus. Works with Norma to build things. Pictor paints the parts needed into life.
Pyxis- the ship’s compass. Works with Octans, and literally looks like a penguin with a compass on his head.
Reticulum- the net. Actually like a telescope eyepiece. Good at seeing very far distances. Helpful in long range battles.
Sagitta- the arrow. Similar use to Caelum on his own, but when used with Sagittarius, the strength of both is increased.
Sculptor- the sculptor. Also works with Norma and Pictor to build and repair.
Scutum- the shield. Very helpful, especially when I need to fight and defend someone else at the same time.
Serpens- the serpent. Similar to Hydrus. Strengthens the magic of Ophiuchus the snake charmer.
Sextans- the sextant. Works with Octans and Pyxis. Very good at knowing exact location.
Telescopium- the telescope. Stronger with Reticulum. Can also work with Reti and Sagitta to aim long distance.
Triangulum- the triangle. Works with the other builders. Allows me to calculate angles instantly when I have to do really reckless things like jumping near, onto, or off of cliffs.
Triangulum Australe- the southern triangle. Does basically the same thing. Stronger in the Southern Hemisphere. They work well together.
Tucana- the toucan. Mimics voices. Can make it seem like a group is bigger than it is. Trickster. Helpful in carrying out an ambush of a dark guild.
Ursa Minor- the little bear. Unique. Stronger with Ursa Major, but not a fighter. Ursa Minor is one of the strongest silver spirits because he can create a bridge. Like a rainbow bridge from one place to another. Allows for instant transport of larger groups.
Volans- the flying fish. Actually flies and swims. Very versatile. Can allow others to breathe underwater.
Vulpecula- the little fox. Incredibly sneaky. She’s great for blending in. Humanoid form. Good tracker and hunter. A massive flirt.
Now for the jeweled silver keys. Bear with me. Not many more to go. I’ve already talked about the Zodiacs, after all. Many of these are strengthened by the stars they contain.
Andromeda- the princess. Only one of her, three keys total. Stronger with Perseus. Her chains can bind a mage’s magic. Contains the Andromeda galaxy and four other galaxies.
Argo- the ship. Is now split into three constellations, but is still one Spirit. Can only be summoned a few times a year. Can travel vast distances in a much shorter time. With effort, it could likely encompass and transport the entire Enterprise.
Aquila- the eagle. A fighter. Switches between humanoid and eagle shape. Has saved many from falling to death. Myself included. Contains the star Altair, of the Summer Triangle, who is a platinum key. Stronger in the summer.
Canis Major- the big dog. Incredibly strong and fast. Would be much stronger if I could find Sirius’ key.
Cassiopeia and Cepheus- the king and queen. They come as a pair. They won’t form a contract unless the key holder possesses both. Cassiopeia uses fortune-telling magic and can see the future. Cepheus uses what she sees to fight.
Centaurus- the centaur. An incredible fighter with both the sword and the bow. Incredibly fast. Contains Alpha Centauri, a platinum key.
Draco- the Dragon. Contains the platinum star Etamin. Can switch between dragon and humanoid form. The strongest of the jeweled keys.
Hercules- the hero. I don’t think he needs an explanation.
Hydra- the serpent. Cut off one head, two more will take its place.
Lupus- the wolf. Also switches forms. Became stronger when the Romans were strong.
Monoceros- the unicorn. Incredibly powerful protection magic.
Orion- the hunter. Fighter, hunter, and tracker. Stronger with the hunting dogs. Contains one confirmed platinum key- Betelgeuse. It also contains unconfirmed platinums Bellatrix and Rigel.
Pegasus- the flying horse. Strengthens Hercules. Incredibly fast.
Perseus- the Medusa killer. Strengthened by Andromeda. A legend. Contains the star Mirphak. Unknown if platinum or not.
Phoenix- the fire bird. Incredibly powerful. Can use fire, and can heal any wound as long as the key holder has enough power.
Piscis Austrinus- the southern fish. Used to be much stronger. A fighter, specializing in aquatic climates. Contains the confirmed platinum star Fomalhaut.
Ursa Major- the great bear. She’s very protective, and very strong.
I won’t discuss the Zodiacs here, as I’ve said. But there are several other platinum keys I haven’t mentioned. We know very little about most of them.
Sirius- Canis Major; Arcturus- Bootes; Alpha Centauri- Centaurus; Vega- Lyra; Rigel (?)- Orion; Procyon- Canis Minor; Betelgeuse- Orion; Altair- Aquila; Fomalhaut- Piscis Austrinus; Deneb- Cygnus; Bellatrix (?)- Orion; Mirphak- Perseus; Dubhe (?)- Ursa Major; Polaris- Ursa Minor; Alphard- Hydra; Alpharatz- Andromeda; Etamin- Draco
All of the Zodiacs have a platinum counterpart except Ophiuchus.
Hamal- Aries; Situla- Aquarius; Tegmen- Cancer; Algieba (?)- Leo; Regulus- Leo; Aldebaran- Taurus; Spica- Virgo; Antares- Scorpio; Castor and Pollux- Gemini; Alshat- Capricorn; Brachium- Libra; Terebellum- Sagittarius; Alrisha- Pisces.
There may be other individual stars we don’t know about yet. There are even spirits for other mythologies. Like the Chinese Zodiac. But we stay away from those because having the two groups interact can be very dangerous.
I’ve been told that Sirius is waiting for me. That’s who I’m looking for now. No sign yet, but hopefully one day soon.

I find myself in front of our house, resting my hand upon the splintering wooden rail of the steps up to the porch. The night was thick around me. There was no light in the surrounding woods, only the tiny pulses of glow from fireflies, throbbing like a heartbeat in the garden surrounding the house. I could hear the songs of crickets all around, a continuous chorus of nature's ebbs and flows. For being someplace not of this earth, the place was alive as if it was. To look up, I could see stars, just the same as the stars of home, a projection of our human, as well as celestial history. The sky is dripping with pinpricks, telling the same stories they've told for centuries of earth years: the two bears, the hunter Orion and his dog, the seven sisters. They are not so far away now, even as I see them this way, possibly dead, years ago. They spill across the sky, undulating, softly rustling, just as everything around me.
I come upon the first step, creaking slightly under my weight. It is an old house, even if we have only just built it. It was built to be an old house, just as some souls are born to be old ones. There is a soft light coming through the windows of the house, candle glow. I savor the sound of clunk, that my shoes make on each step, and the sound of the give of the slightly warped wood under me. I come upon the door, blue with chipped paint. It is a Dutch door, with a brass handle, the top half cracked open to let the warm night air in. I press upon the handles latch, it is cool, and the clink of the metal is familiar.
As I open the door the smell of honey, beeswax candles, lamp oil, and old wood rushes to me, greeting me. A sort of earthiness, mixing with sweetness. In the corner, by the wood stove, sits my love. He looks suddenly over to me, though he's not startled. His blue eyes are like galaxies, his pale skin like the milk of moonlight. He smiles softly at me, and urges me to come over. He is sitting on the floor, under the window, knees pulled up to his chest, however when I turn to walk over to him, his knees fall aside, and his legs cross beneath him. I sit down beside him now, laying my head upon his shoulder. He stares straight, and calmly strokes my hair. "What's troubling you?" He asks softly.
"I'm burnt out. Everything is either exhausting or overwhelming. I thought this depression would be gone upon my waking, and it was, but only for a time." I told him.
He turned his head to press his lips upon my forehead. There's something about it which feels so thin, like silk, you could feel what's just beneath. Life, blood. He did not respond immediately, he sat quietly and thought for a moment. "There's always reason to the suffering. The both of us, we've lived a hard life. But not so hard that others notice. We're plagued by a silent suffering." He said, not lifting his face from where it had been.
"Neither of us would have suffered if we were together." I said quietly, thick sadness in my voice.
He smiled against my skin, "No, we would have never suffered. But then what would have been the point?" He asked.
"There would not be one. Not in the true sense at least. We would have enjoyed this existance." I struggled to say.
"It would have been pure excitement, but then there would have been no purpose, not for you or me." He said, lifting himself slightly. "You would have never learned these beautiful, and unnameable things."
"Maybe not. But it wouldn't have mattered. We would have grown up together as children. You wouldn't have cared that your mother walked you home every day from school, overbearing as she was. I would have been there waiting for you. You would have taught me everything you learned at school that day. You would have read me your favorite fairy stories. We would have gone out and played in the woods. As teenagers, we would have taken walks around the farm, and sat there in the square, laughing at those rediculous people. We would have shared such beautiful moments. Discovering each other. It would have been love." I said. He held me now, pulled into his chest, held against his beating heart, his strength.
"I wouldn't have felt so isolated, but I probably would have never left that place. We would have married very young." He said softly, reflecting my sorrow.
"Young, but happily." I added, looking up at him.
"And where would we have met in your existance?" He asked, gazing down at me.
I thought about it, "We wouldn't have been childhood friends. I would have met you through Jake, in high school. You would have been a part of what was, at the Cafes I used to frequent. You would have been the only one who would spend hours with me in the bookstores, at libraries, stealing mad kisses, hidden away in the isles. We would have grown inseparable immediately, driving in the mountains all summer long. You would have gotten into fights, and I would have kissed your cuts, counted your scars. We would grow to stumble out of bars on those leather jacket, haight-ashburry nights." I said, "We would have never married, but I would have never have been hurt or abused."
He shook his head, "no, I wouldn't have allowed it. Can you imagine my rage upon learning how your father treated you? How the people on the street spoke to you?"
I smiled weakly, "You would have been arrested."
"No, you wouldn't have allowed for that. Because you would teach me to forgive, and be soft. But in those times of cutting pain, skin splitting under whatever dull edge you could find - I would have woken you up." He said.
"How, from what cruel dream?"
"If you are hurting, then I hurt just the same. I would damage myself, slit my wrists to show you how it feels, to see the one you love, bleeding, tears of burning salt and blood." He said.
I dropped my head upon his chest, "I would have never attempted it again." I muttered.
"Exactly."
"What would happen after?" I asked.
"You would have given yourself to me. We would have made love, and though it would have only dulled the pain, we would come back eventually. After perhaps three days laying in bed in the sun. It would have been okay." He said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because that's the only way to heal, for either of us." He said sharply, and leaned forward, looking straight into my eyes, "These wounds, they come from the hate. That's the only way to neutralize the burn: love."
My eyes fell softly, as I was made nervous by the truth of this. But he placed two fingers beneath my chin, and stole my gaze again.
"That's why I don't like him. He doesn't love you like I could, like he should." He said, and I could see the burning behind his eyes. It was of both hate, and passion.
"What do I do?" I mouthed.
He looked down now, unsure, and released my face. At first it looked as if on his face, he did not know. His eyes fell, and then found their way back to me. "This." He said softly, and weakly.
I sighed, and fell into his chest, and his arms pulled me deeper against him.

spent a lifetime stuck
@blackpaladinweek | Day 1: Time/Space
Summary: His love for what lay beyond Earth had been with Shiro for most of his life. It wasn’t so easy to destroy.
It started like this.
A room halved between a curved white ceiling and a flat dark floor and even darker walls. Being lead and seated among the theater seats, the chatter of his classmates being hastily shushed by their teachers and chaperones as an announcement plays through the room. Overhead, fluorescent lights dimming to nothing as pinpricks of brightness came into being. A clear voice, accompanying a projected sky that seemed to have no end, weaving together images from times long past.
Young eyes struck with wonder, speechless with awe. The beginning of an interest that would pull him across a galaxy and beyond.
-
Much of his childhood was spent chasing the stars. Even as his other interests waned, this one only seemed to grow. Soon he moved beyond the eight planets introduced in class. From the star charts painstakingly photocopied from library books, to the dwarf planets residing in their planetary system, dotting his homework in carefully spaced out circles alongside their larger counterparts. Tidbits of information were plundered from the depths of encyclopedias, eventually transitioning to devouring astronomy books as his reading comprehension improved. Knowing what to search for made delving into the internet so much easier.
Shiro memorized the constellations in whatever time he could spare, a thin handmade book made of printed sheets ever present in his bag. The placement of the stars in the sky, the months they could be seen, Shiro tried to remember them all, tracing their shape against the skin of his knee underneath his school desk.
At night, after dinner but before bed, he would clamber onto the roof, hands outstretched as if he could somehow touch them if he tried hard enough.
Hydra, Orion, the two Ursas, Leo, Virgo, Cancer...he named them all one by one, then once more just because. The planets were a bit harder to pick out, but over time it grew easier and easier, until they became as familiar to him as the constellations.
In his dreams, Shiro flew.
Stars, nebulae, and planets all passed by in a blur as he streaked on by. All utterly fascinating, and he wouldn’t mind visiting, but what he really wanted to find was light-years beyond them. Farther, farther, farther. Past the Milky Way and into the next galaxy, chasing the edges of an ever expanding universe. He wanted to see it all.
As Shiro grew older, his interest in the unknowns of space didn’t dissipate. As Shiro grew older, the more he was told of the impossibility of his dream.
The ones who got sent to space were in the top percentile. Shiro wasn’t top anything, not in the ways that mattered, that he was told would matter. Best do what he actually had a prayer of achieving rather than some long shot that wouldn’t pan out.
His continued pursuit of that dream was as much an act of defiance as it was genuine interest.
Despite everything, his persistence paid off. Shiro managed to get himself to the Galaxy Garrison.
From then on, it was a rigmarole of classes, instructors, and tests. The subject matter was all tailored towards space research and travel. He loved it, even as he spent long nights beating his head against his textbooks. Both literally and figuratively.
Being in the simulators was like fulfilling a childhood dream. In there, he flew, an old hunger pushing him higher and higher. Virtual planets, asteroids, and satellites all passed by in a blur as he soared, weightless excitement driving him to go faster. It was practice for the real thing, a safe space to learn from their mistakes. No real consequences save for the immediate dressing down from the instructor if a team performed recklessly.
It wasn’t real, but Shiro couldn’t help but treat it like it was, the closest he’d ever been to reaching the stars. The very first milestone he’d truly gotten towards his goal, even though realistically Shiro knew he’d only just gotten his foot in the door.
He’d make it though. He would. One day he’d be out there flying into the unknown.
It took years of effort, but eventually, he did. Somehow. It still didn’t seem quite real, like he was having a very lucid dream.
Shiro’s name was on the roster for the yearlong Kerberos mission. A mission farther than anyone had ever gone.
Shiro was excited, but a little sad as well. For the first time, he’d be leaving someone he would miss behind.
Temporarily, but still.
Keith was a firecracker personified, in more ways than one. The way he flew was unlike anything Shiro had ever seen. He’d known from the first time he’d seen Keith fly in a simulator that here was a pilot that came once in a lifetime, one that would soon overtake him as the best of their generation. If he were older, and Shiro younger, Keith would be the one flying to the edges of their solar system, and Shiro would be the one trying to catch up to a legacy he would never reach.
He’d like to think that they’d be friends even so, but lying to himself wasn’t something he’d made a habit of. Shiro was glad they met the way they did, when they did. If he’d been younger, it wouldn’t have gone nearly as well. If they’d been closer in age, he wouldn’t have been kind, not when Keith would’ve been active competition.
But ruminating on what-ifs were for people with regrets.
Shiro didn’t regret any of this.
Even so, he’d still be leaving his closest friend behind, who was far more vulnerable than he appeared.
So Shiro made a promise, linking their pinkies together in a half-forgotten custom, swearing to return. To his surprise, Keith promised too, to be by his side the next time he went up, eyes glimmering with fierce determination.
The journey to Kerberos was long and tedious. It was also gorgeous, in a way the shorter hops he’d gone on hadn’t been, because no one had ever seen this in person before, with their own eyes. Like stepping through freshly fallen, untouched snow.
They were explorers, history makers, paving the way for the future.
They weren’t expecting things to go so wrong.
It came out of nowhere, without any warning. The first sign was when Kerberos started quaking beneath their feet. His instincts hit just as suddenly, like he’d opened up a soundproofed rehearsal room. Screaming at him to run, even as he knew it would be too late.
The second sign, the advancing shadow of the giant ship looming overhead, an ominous glow at its prow beginning to form. Running was all they could do, even though it was useless.
Between one moment and the next, the alien ship projected a beam that yanked them all up.
The beginning of an end.
-
There were no stars to see here, no endless expanse of celestial bodies yet to be found. Only a permanently dark ceiling, and the roar of a crowd ever hungry for blood. How foolish of him, then, to make a promise he wouldn’t be able keep. Not when he didn’t think he’d be able to make it past this.
Even if he survived, what then? There was blood on his hands now, stained forever with loss, no matter that one of his hands wasn’t even his anymore. It was something all those who remained shared. There was no choice except the one that was forced upon them, to live or die. Injury or a forced surrender meant they disappeared, fate unknown.
Maybe they were sent to the labor camps. Maybe they’d been too injured, and were killed, put down. Maybe they were sent back in to fight only to die.
None of the prisoners really knew.
Death was almost preferred, because at least they would know what happened to them, victor and victim alike.
He wondered how his crew’s disappearance had been taken back on Earth, if it was anything like not knowing whether some of his fellow prisoners had lived or died. The Holts still had family back on Earth though. With half of their family gone, they’d need the insurance claims. For Shiro, the only family he really had was Keith. He comforted himself with the knowledge that Keith wouldn’t be alone, not with his team members beside him. They’d also had enough shared friends and acquaintances between them that they’d know what to do with Shiro’s belongings at least, what little there was.
Shiro barely recognized himself anymore. He didn’t want to think of how others would look at him. Perhaps it was better this way. For the ones he once knew to never see the monster he had become. He would die someday in these sands, knowing that he’d be remembered for being something better than this, who had killed others just so he could live to see another day.
The ones who had imprisoned him had other plans.
Then again, so did the infiltrator in their midst.
-
Somehow, despite it all, he hadn’t learned to hate the stars. A lifetime of yearning wasn’t so easy to get rid of, even with what had happened upon his crew on the edges of their solar system.
On Arus, the stars in the sky were all foreign, but they bewitched him with their beauty all the same. Part of him wished that he’d been able to spend his return to Earth just staring at the night sky. There hadn’t been time, going from one escape to the next. As it was, it had been nearly dawn by the time the drugs had worn off.
They weren’t safe here either, not while they were still stranded. But this was the first time in a long time where Shiro could breathe without a constant underlying tension. His journey back to Earth had been fraught with panic, his arrival more of the same.
This was a temporary reprieve, but one that Shiro would take gladly. Underneath a foreign sky, with the faint presence of the Black Lion at the corner of his mind, he leaned back on his hands, letting the knowledge settle into his bones.
Shiro was free.

For the fic meme, 1 and 10 (for whichever fic is the answer to 1)
1. Of the fics you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?
Answered! But for the purpose of the next question, it’s a tie between Les Hommes de la Misericorde and Sailing By Orion’s Star.
10. What are some facts readers may not know about [title]?
Hmm let’s see, I’ll do a fact for each! I always get ideas so randomly--from songs, from things people say to me, from things I watch-- so I’m gonna talk about that a little.
For Les Hommes, I actually got the idea when @distractedkat and I were standing in our apartment kitchen when we lived together, and she was like “you know, what if the Amis just...lived in a country house or something with Valjean and Cosette? ESCAPE to the countryside, you know?” And then suddenly, an idea. I get ideas SO randomly and off the cuff like that. I went “omg I have an idea!” and she laughed evilly and helped me come up with a title and then after that I sat with the brick, agonizing over which Amis would survive in the survival au, and which wouldn’t and man let me tell you that was not a fun few hours.
For SBOS I had a dream? It was actually a super creepy dream and I was on the ship, like standing on the rail and holding onto the rigging and there was this super violent battle going on around me and I was yelling trying to get people to listen to me. It vaguely reminded me of Elizabeth Swann’s big speech in POTC. This prompted me to listen to the Pirates soundtrack the next day, and to Hoist the Colors in particular. Then suddenly, I was like omg omg omg what about a LES MIS PIRATE AU and it all spiraled out from there. CAN YOU GUYS IMAGINE IF I NEVER HAD THAT DREAM? My life would not even be the same.
Also fun fact, the Folger Shakespeare Library had an exhibit on celestial navigation right as I was trying to research for it, and so I went twice to take notes and people in there were very clearly like “what is that girl doing?”

Scry for answers I seek beyond me
The underworld full of demons of celestials
Let them be free and defend their realm I plea
Find that inner instinct the power I once lost
To accept them is one but the past at what cost?
Follow thy dimming red orb of Orion
A balance of light behind the dark
One final stroll through the park
Leading to that underworld once more
Burning every element down to my core
Scream louder louder LOUDER
as Helle is lost to the darkness
And his inner demon is revealed
A beserk mode so strong and cannot be sealed
Causing a pain upon those who created his world and continue to threaten his very existence
Wake up...please stay, a young angel of the library said
A quiver full of static charged energy causing emotion in a non existent unidentifiable soul
Leading him back home where he belongs
The mighty Skitz a wanderer who never left
Sleep tight now until your star rises ***
