The Mystery of the Aussie

Investigating family history can be a time-eater. When the shelter-in-place order came down this spring, with it came a rare gift of time for me to write about my family history book experience. Just one faded black and white photo of an uncle launched my search.

“Left poor. Went to Australia. Married a White lady. Returned rich,” claimed my Mother-in-Law. I thought to myself, “Could her uncle really have left their farming village and done all that?!”

Years later my curiosity fueled a search for more of his story and clues that might lead to his descendants. How could her uncle have really traveled across Asian seas to a distant continent more than 4,000 nautical miles south of China? It was the late 1800s. Why would he leave? Did he really get rich or did Nai Nai’s childhood memory imagine it? She’s no longer here to ask. How could I find out?

Facts about this uncle were scarce. He was born in 1870. Few people were left who knew of him. A cousin gave me an email address to his cousin in Australia. That started my journey.

After occasional correspondence, asking every relative if they knew anything about him and meeting new cousins in Australia, Hong Kong, and China, I at last collected enough material for a backstory. I studied Chinese-Australian migration. I discovered robust online resources like the National Archives of Australia and the Queensland State Archives. I joined a genealogy writing group who gave me honest feedback on my drafts. Worldwide cousins shared a few memories and photos. Each revelation was a gift. I was excited to be able to tell my family the story of a distinguished forebear.

As I worked towards a final manuscript, I investigated printing, publishing, and promoting. A six year seat-of-the-pants journey. Along the way I learned about copyrights, ISBNs, and crafting engaging book pitches to libraries and museums.

As it turned out, Granduncle Jan See Chin’s life path really was astonishing. At the turn of the 20th Century, Jan See Chin transformed himself from an unassuming young man to a sugar cane plantation magnate. He forged a legacy of influential projects in both his adopted country of Australia as well as his own Shekki village in Kwangtung.

Times were tough. In desperation Jan See Chin’s father sent his son abroad at the of age 15 to find work and remit money home to the family.

Traveling alone on a three week voyage from Hong Kong through the South China and Coral seas, he arrived in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, at that time a Crown Colony of the British Empire. Thousands of other Chinese laborers also sought work in Australia, often scraping by in the few arduous jobs open to Chinese such as sheep herder, garden worker or laborer on the sugar cane plantations.

Living frugally, Jan See Chin sent money home but also saved to buy a small plot of land on which to grow vegetables. Along the way he met Pang Yung, a businessman from his village, who had a store in the town of Cairns in the far north part of Queensland. Pang Yung and his white British wife had two daughters. One of those daughters was named Maud. Maud and See Chin married in 1902. Their marriage partnership would thrive for 26 years as they raised 13 children.

Living economically and saving enough to purchase modest plots of farmland at discounted Crown Land Sales, See Chin and Maud gradually expanded their holdings to an incredible 3,000 acres of sugar cane plantation land. By 1915, See Chin was recognized as Australia’s biggest individual grower of cane in tropical far North Queensland.

For the next 15 years, Jan See Chin and Queensland’s other Chinese cane plantation owners struggled to keep their robust cane businesses afloat amid a flood of nationalism rising up in the newly federated commonwealth of Australia. Powerful, virulent voices stoked fear of people who looked different than the ruling British citizenry. The government adopted no less than 15 official acts to intentionally disadvantage Chinese plantation owners and drive them away. The Acts penalized only the Chinese, imposing fines, withholding sugar bounties, and prohibiting them from hiring any non-White labor.

One Act, the Immigration Restriction Act 1901, prohibited entry of Chinese and colored immigrants and mandated immediate deportation of Pacific Islanders who were already working on the cane plantations of the Chinese growers. This became known as the White Australia policy. Chinese seeking to enter Australia were required to take an English dictation test of a 50-word paragraph. Failure led to immediate deportation.

The obstacles became so egregious that the Chinese plantation owners left. Jan See Chin was one of the last two Chinese growers who held out. But eventually, he, too, conceded that the environment in Australia was too hostile to continue to do business. He sold his acreage, packed up his household and growing family of eight and sailed to Hong Kong.

Intending to set up a temporary home base for his family, See Chin acquired a spacious flat in Hong Kong and enrolled his children in private, Anglican schools. Then he turned his attention to his home village of Ho Tau in the Kwangtung Province to build a family mansion.

Once in Ho Tau, See Chin noticed that the villagers lacked conveniences he had become accustomed to in Australia. Motivated to help the village modernize, he recruited other overseas Chinese to form a community development club. The club set about to build an electric company, rice-hulling mill, weaving factory, as well as a system of plumbing to bring water to the village.

Most of Shekki County lacked an effective way to transport local goods between the village and other parts of the province, let alone with the international port of Macau. See Chin’s solution was to plan and finance the first paved road in the entire province of Kwangtung.

He co-founded the Kee Kwan Road Construction Co., Ltd. which inaugurated the first phase of the 30-mile highway in 1928 to great fanfare. The celebration attracted luminaries as well as tens of thousands of onlookers. The presence of this seminal road and the busses and trucks purchased for it catapulted the Shekki District into the commercial powerhouse it remains today.

But all did not go smoothly. During the 1920s & 30s, rampant banditry pervaded southern China, often targeting wealthy families. One bandit gang kidnapped his 16-year-old son, tethering him to a post for over three months while demanding a ransom of 15,000 pounds (equivalent to over $1 million today). See Chin negotiated a reduced ransom of 2,000 pounds and the traumatized young man was eventually released.

Villagers motivated to improve their farms or start a small business lacked the means to borrow money. See Chin established banks in the village, Shekki, and Hong Kong. But two Canadian bankers embezzled funds and poisoned See Chin to cover up the crime. Jan See Chin died at the age of 59. His wife, Maud See Chin, had just birthed their 13th child and would spend the next few years pursuing justice for her husband’s murder, a fight that went all the way to the highest court in the land called the Privy Council.

Considering the number of apparel retailers on the ground and online, it would appear to be a winning category. But broad sales trends are not in the sector's favor.

Several apparel retailers are struggling. Ascena is regrouping as sales plummet, unloading its discount banners entirely. L Brands is propped up by its personal care brand Bath & Body Works as Victoria's Secret loses share. J. Crew is in disarray, hobbled by debt and putting its hopes into its much smaller Madewell brand.

Profits in the segment were down 24% in the first quarter, according to a Retail Metrics note cited by CNBC, the worst showing since the first quarter of 2008, when they fell 40%. Department stores aren't faring much better. Their "departments" have been reduced to mostly apparel, plus some beauty and home goods, a stark contrast to their heyday when they sold everything from books to wine.

The troubles go back even further, however. In 1987, the average consumer allocated 5.9% of their spending to apparel and services, but by 2017, that had plummeted to 3.1%, according to a Deloitte spotlight report last year. The challenges faced by consumers outside of top-tier incomes could be a factor: average spending on women and girls' apparel has especially declined for lower-income earners, with the "only bright spot" in footwear, where share in apparel expenditure has risen across income levels, according to that report.

Existing competitive forces — notably the discounts found at off-price retailers and at direct-to-consumer sites, including Amazon — are challenging apparel retail, but fundamental changes in attitudes about what to wear are also at play. That is perhaps best exemplified by Lululemon, an apparel retailer who brought the word "athleisure" to the market and high-priced activewear style to fashion. It is also a rare winner in the category.

Assembling a strategy is complicated by the changing of the guard in fashion: The street has replaced the atelier.

The new boss

Fashion itself flipped the switch, according to Shawn Grain Carter, professor of fashion business management at the Fashion Institute of Technology. "When I saw this trend starting to emerge in the early 90s, really the 80s, I always link it historically to when Marc Jacobs did the grunge collection for Perry Ellis," she said. "Even though the collection was a disaster it was a major inflection point."

Jacobs famously lost his job after the 1993 collection was panned by fashion critics. That wouldn't likely happen today (in fact, Jacobs reprised the collection last year). Instead, brands are increasingly turning to pop culture for designs and trends — and to social media for approval.

"When I worked at Bergdorf's as a buyer, you did not wear jeans past 50 — it was considered inappropriate unless you worked on a farm. "

"The youth are driving this look. Fashion editors have lost the cachet of driving what is in and what is out," Carter said. "We've always had celebrity endorsements — but now we have people involved who know nothing about fashion. I mean Justin Bieber, for god's sake, but this is where we are. And social media is global, driven by peer review and peer approval. You don't have to wait anymore to go to Europe for inspiration. Why would you hire a DJ named Virgil Abloh? He is a creative genius but he's not a couturier."

(Abloh, who was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton's men's in March last year, in 2013 founded his own fashion label, Off-White, part of the Milan-based New Guards Group recently acquired by Farfetch.)

Other strong currents in society are affecting fashion, notably the value placed on sustainability, along with changing norms around gender and age, according to Carter. "When I worked at Bergdorf's as a buyer, you did not wear jeans past 50 — it was considered inappropriate unless you worked on a farm. And the cultural trend of gender fluidity is no longer an experimentation in androgyny. If men are going to wear lipstick, young people think nothing of that — because your gender identity is determined by you and not by society."

Indeed, both Carter and Thomai Serdari, professor of luxury marketing and branding at New York University's Stern School of Business, see fashion trends as driven by consumers, who are willing to wear Balenciaga and Target at once. It's no surprise, then, that haute couture fashion houses are producing sneakers, they both say. But successful fashion brands are doing more than simply adding expensive kicks to their assortments, according to Serdari. They're also relinquishing the power to dictate taste.

"You have this mix of high and low," she said. Even traditional fashion houses like Chanel and Gucci have allowed customers to be individuals and offered them choices by breaking up what were once sets like suits and twinsets.

"We don't see capsule collections any longer, but a focus on products, based on how people live their life. They're thinking about how these products can stand individually, this is what attracts people to Gucci right now. There is still a segment that shops the full outfit from brands. But their number is diminishing," Serdari said.

"With a greater focus on work-life balance, there's an increasing number of people taking an interest in having an active lifestyle so in turn the idea of traditional workwear is evolving."

Future trends don't look promising either in light of Gen Z's attitude toward paying full price for clothes. Gen Z shoppers who enjoy shopping said they buy clothes at full price 25% to 50% of the time, but those who don't like shopping said they buy clothing at full price less than 25% of the time, according to a recent MakerSights report.

It's not just a penchant for discounts, however. Consumers are not just aiming to pay less for clothing, they're also buying less in the first place. That trend may be further compounded by tariffs slapped on goods made in China that could jeopardize sales, according to several retailers and the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

Cold comfort in hot activewear

Along with a democratization of who determines what is fashionable has come the casualization of apparel. Much of retailers' discomfort can be attributed to consumers' desire for comfort in all phases of their day.

Several analysts have pinpointed athleisure and other casual styles as rare growth areas for apparel retail. In an Aug. 5 note emailed to Retail Dive, Morgan Stanley analysts raised their five-year global activewear growth forecasts, citing "evidence of continued momentum for global brands in the US and accelerating DTC growth, coupled with a stronger 2018" and noting that retailers will be "increasingly challenged."

One reason is that fewer and fewer employees need a separate wardrobe for work. Even Goldman Sachs recently stopped requiring tailored suits for men, notes FIT's Carter. "So now even the bankers don't have to spend $3,000 on a bespoke suit," she told Retail Dive in an interview. "They can wear a sweater like they're going on to the Hamptons. Everybody wants to have this hip look from the entrepreneurs who are revolutionizing society."

Euromonitor pins recent and future U.S. apparel sales growth on "changing consumer lifestyles" centered on health, wellness and activity. The firm measured 10% growth in U.S. apparel and footwear sales over five years (2013-2018) to $284 billion, according to data emailed to Retail Dive. That's spilling into everyday wear, according to fashion analytics firm Edited. New sneaker arrivals for men, for example, have risen 34% year over year and for women 11%, while new arrivals for women's pumps fell 3%, according to Edited data.

"With a greater focus on work-life balance, there's an increasing number of people taking an interest in having an active lifestyle so in turn the idea of traditional workwear is evolving," Edited Market Analyst Kayla Marci told Retail Dive in an email. "Globally, the lines between workwear and everyday apparel are becoming more blurred. A great example is how sneakers are dominating footwear assortments, and worn outside of the gym and into the office."

And it's not just work, Carter notes. "Tea, the Saturday and Sunday Sabbath, a wedding, a funeral," she said. "What are you going to get dressed up for? Whereas baby boomers always had clothes for career, clothes for socializing and clothes for special occasions, I can wear my sneakers to every single event."

It's not hard to see why, for example, Nordstrom is struggling despite its retail innovations. Shoppers no longer flock there for special occasion and other pricier apparel, which led UBS analysts last month to deem the department store a "no-growth retailer," citing trends for less expensive and more casual attire.

That's unlikely to change, at least not much. Carter says she is seeing some return in the desire to dress up a bit more, with invitations to weddings and fundraisers now often calling for "smart casual," which is often open to a wide interpretation.

"Americans started this trend and it's here to stay. But they still get dressed for dinner in Europe, and you don't go to a meeting in Shanghai or Beijing in khaki pants," she said. "I'm seeing women dress up a little more. Cute ballet flats. And we're dressing up things that we didn't before, like sneakers and tote bags. We have to be careful to ensure that the expression through our fashion doesn't mean that we are sloppy in our lives."

Serdari isn't so sure. "If my life had four activities per day, I needed four outfits, five days a week — that's a lot of outfits and people don't need that any longer," she said. "I don't think our styling is going to change or go back. I think we're going to get even more relaxed."

And therein lies the hope for fashion — that it is a way to express yourself, according to Carter.

"People will always buy fashion because people like to escape, and we sell a fantasy," she said. "Most people wear fashion because they feel good. It has an emotional appeal and it is an expression of their individuality and their identity. I'm noticing more adjectives added to the word 'casual,' like 'casual chic.' These are all buzzwords for dressing with some class and sass, even if it's casual.

Lole’s puffer coats: These are all truly incredible–they are the warmest and cutest you will ever find for the price. Shanghai Disney Resort Announces “Duffy Month” as Duffy the Disney Bear Takes to the Skies on China Eastern Airlines’ New “Duffy and Friends”-Themed Airplane

Shanghai, August 12, 2019 – A new aircraft depicting Duffy and Friends took off on its maiden flight today in celebration of the upcoming Duffy Month at Shanghai Disney Resort this September. The plane, carrying a host of special guests, flew from Kunming in China’s southwest to Shanghai, following an exciting unveiling ceremony at the Kunming Changshui International Airport. The new DuffyFriendship Express marks the fourth Disney-themed aircraft to join China Eastern Airlines’ fleet as part of its partnership with Shanghai Disney Resort, following the unveiling of the popular DisneyPixar Toy Story Land-themed Toy StoryHappy Holiday Express, which was launched last spring.

Duffy the Disney Bear is a loveable, cuddly teddy bear that was hand sewn by Minnie Mouse and given to Mickey as a companion for his many ocean voyages. Disney fans across China adore Duffy and his huggable group of fluffy friends – ShellieMay, Gelatoni and StellaLou – and today, the loveable team embarked on a joyful new journey as the newly decorated plane took off into the open skies.

During the inauguration ceremony in Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan Province, leadership from Shanghai Disney Resort and China Eastern Airlines jointly unveiled the colorful new “Duffy and Friends”-themed airplane in front of a large group of invited guests, including media, celebrities and Duffy fans decked out in Duffy-themed apparel excited to see their favorite teddy bear. Among them was the talented young actor Chen Xingxu, a loyal Duffy and Friends fan who maintains an expansive collection of Duffy-themed merchandise.

A series of Duffy-themed experiences both at the airport and in-flight were introduced alongside the Duffy Friendship Express launch. These magical surprises instantly captured the hearts of the special guests who then boarded the flight for its maiden journey to Shanghai.

The exterior design of the plane features Duffy and his friends on their way to another adventure. From the moment passengers are handed a commemorative Duffy-themed boarding pass, their immersive and memorable Duffy experience begins.

Adorable Duffy and Friends images line the entire interior of the aircraft, from cushion covers to luggage containers – with images even on the cabin walls. A new in-flight video helps passengers to get better acquainted with Duffy and his friends and fall even more in love with him and his heartwarming stories. Passengers departing from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport will find Duffy-themed check-in counters and some guests will also experience a fun “Duffy shuttle bus” that transports them from the gate to the plane.

Continuing the exciting Duffy news, Shanghai Disney Resort announced that starting this September, guests will be able to enjoy the fun-loving companionship of Duffy and Friends like never before. The first-ever “Duffy’s Heartfelt Moments” celebration will be held from September 2nd to 30th during which, Duffy and Friends’ stories of friendship and adventure will come to life at Shanghai Disney Resort in an exciting month of joyful celebrations and surprises. Guests will also experience a host of novel Duffy-themed decorations, adorable new shows, memorable themed food and beverage offerings, stylish merchandise, and much more, thereby becoming immersed in the joy-filled world of Duffy and his delightful friends.

As part of the celebration, the iconic floral Mickey display that greets guests at the entrance to Shanghai Disneyland will be transformed into a breathtaking floral Duffy, created from thousands of vibrant flowers and colors. To add to the atmosphere, from September 2nd to September 30th, the Shanghai Disneyland Band will put on a brand-new Duffy and Friends performance each morning, welcoming guests from around the world with a high-spirited mix of music and fun.
