Many weather applications offer alerts based on your location, but your device also allows for you to turn on notifications for tornado warnings in its settings. This includes setting weather alert notifications on your phone. "This is the time for folks to have a plan in multiple ways to get the warnings." "It's really important to heed the warning and not wait until you have visual confirmation (of the storm)," Bunting said. Whenever severe weather threatens your area, it's important to be prepared. "One dangerous aspect of tornadoes in the South is that they can occur in the middle of the night when people are sleeping unlike Tornado Alley storms that typically become less severe after sunset," said CNN meteorologist Chad Myers. I think what's important is to know that it's a typical early season, southeast US severe weather setup in the sense that storms will be fast-moving and they will continue after dark," said Bunting. "The details will play a significant role in just how bad things get and where the storms strike. Historically, strong tornadoes in mid-March have been most prevalent in northern Mississippi and Alabama, which aligns closely with this week's forecast storms. Severe thunderstorms are not unusual for this part of the country and during this time of the year. At this time, the specific timing and threats of the storms are unknown. Some areas are currently in a level 3 out of 5, "Enhanced Risk," according to the Storm Prediction Center. The region from central Florida through central Virginia is currently being monitored by the SPC for this risk. There could be "potentially a few waves of severe weather, starting in the morning, then during the middle of the day, and then later in the evening as the cold front comes in," said Holmes when discussing central Alabama's forecast, a region currently in that 'Moderate Risk.'īy Thursday, the risk for strong to severe thunderstorms will shift toward the US East Coast. "This (overnight) wave of severe storms will likely have the higher potential for stronger long track tornadoes," according to the NWS office in Birmingham. The storms along this front will need to be monitored for tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail. There will then be a final line of storms along the cold front ramping up in the evening near the Mississippi River and tracking east through these southern states. "With these discrete storms all modes of severe weather will be possible including some tornadoes, and perhaps a significant one," the NWS office in Memphis said in Tuesday morning's discussion. Not all of these storms will produce tornadoes, but given the favorable environment for tornadoes, it will be possible with some of them. These types of storms are discrete, individual storms that are known for producing tornadoes. During the afternoon hours, some of the states, especially in the "Moderate" or "Enhanced" risks, could see supercell thunderstorms develop.

The Angels went 7-18 in September and finished 37 games behind the AL West champion Houston Astros. But Los Angeles’ AL wild card hopes abruptly fell apart in late July with a 2-5 homestand against AL cellar-dwellers Baltimore and Detroit, starting with a 16-inning loss to the Orioles that depleted their pitching staff. The Angels went 12-6 immediately after Skaggs’ death on July 1, improving to 54-49 while rallying together in the wake of their well-liked starting pitcher’s sudden death. He did all of those things while maintaining an apparently strong relationship with Trout and his other players, but the results never showed up. Those types of decisions are not in my control, so I don’t worry too much about them.”Īusmus was hired to provide a fresh voice to the Angels after nearly two decades under Scioscia while incorporating new-school strategies in analytics and player management. You learn to take it with a grain of salt. There was a point in 2015 in Detroit, my second year there, it came out I was being fired, and (I) was there two more years. … To be honest with you, I’ve learned to shrug those things off.

He was Scioscia’s bench coach for six seasons, winning a World Series ring along the way, before he left to manage the Tampa Bay Rays.Īusmus on Sunday acknowledged he had heard the rumors linking Maddon, who has said he still owns a home near Anaheim, to an Angels return. The 65-year-old Maddon spent 31 years in the Angels organization, starting as a catcher and logging lengthy assignments as a minor league manager and a major league assistant coach, along with two stints as the Angels’ interim manager. The Cubs’ only World Series-winning manager of the past century decided to leave the club by mutual agreement last week. Rumors began to swirl about Ausmus’ job security last week while Maddon’s future was being debated in Chicago. Despite the majors’ ninth-largest payroll this season at $164.4 million and the ideal franchise cornerstone in Trout, Los Angeles has made the playoffs just once in the past decade and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2009. The 50-year-old Ausmus was unable to stop the Angels’ streak of five straight non-playoff seasons and four straight losing records during the prime of AL MVP favorite Mike Trout’s career. “He navigated this franchise through one of its most difficult seasons with class and professionalism.”Įppler and Ausmus didn’t immediately return phone messages seeking comment. “I want to thank Brad for his hard work and dedication to this organization over the last two seasons as both a special assistant and a manager,” Eppler said in a statement. Only five major league regulars made it through the entire season without going on the injured list. Beset by injuries and tragedy, Ausmus’ team struggled for nearly every month of the summer, except for a burst of inspired play through its grief over the midseason death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs in a hotel room in Texas.

As the new media continues its growth into the social realm, who is being seen and heard? Is it dominated by Wealthy, White, Males like our more traditional media? Or, is the new media opening new and highly utilized outlets for a variety of minority perspectives? The panel will examine these questions from a variety of standpoints-each defining "diversity" a little differently with something new to contribute to the discussion this year. Once again, we'll look at how diversity is working on the web. Mehnaz Gul, Florida State University Social media as Politicians platform for agenda setting and entertainment for followers: A case of Imran Khan Political Campaign in Pakistan Jeanette Castillo, Florida State University David Montez, Florida State University Live Tweeting the presidential debates: Convergence, participation and the clever citizen Outside the wall: A content analysis of Chinese dissidents online discourses in Weibo and Twitter. Qihao Ji, Florida State University Louisa Ha, Bowling Green State University Ulla Bunz, Florida State University Inside the wall VS. Panelist: Young Sun Lee, Florida State University Satirical political podcasts: Do humor appeals attract young people to politics? Moderator: Jeanette Castillo, Florida State University This convergence between traditional and new media offers insight into the way social media are influencing the political process. This panel proposes to discuss this phenomenon from an international perspective focusing on four countries with active political campaigns: Pakistan, South Korea, China and the United States. Through live interaction with mediated political events, engaged citizens turn political media into entertainment. Social media are changing the way citizens engage both with political institutions and political media. Mary Beth Oliver, Pennsylvania State University Keynote Address: Media-Inspired Connectedness with Others. Keynote Address: Morality, Moral Thinking, and Media Entertainment. Janicke, Florida State University, Symposium Chair The three broad themes the symposium will address include 1) media and the self 2) media and relationships and 3) emerging media and social life. Invited panels and addresses by senior scholars, as well as competitive papers, will set the course for future understanding of these connections. What do technologies such mobile communication, virtual worlds, and social networking imply about our social lives? This symposium will join leading scholars in efforts to explore the diversity of ways that media intersect with social life. Likewise, changes in the media landscape imply that our social lives may be evolving as well. Almost all facets of our lives are affected by media, including our emotional and moral selves, and our lives pertaining to family, romance, friendship, and work. Media content, consumption, and use touch on virtually all aspects of our social lives – including how we think of ourselves and others, and how we understand, create, and maintain relationships.
