Why aren't people visiting for campus tours allowed to visit classes? Aren't classes like the most important thing for a university?
Because college classes are information heavy and our students work hard, we don’t want to distract them! (: And there’s so much more to picking a college, you really want to make sure you’re comfortable with the campus as well!
do they give away free clickers at the chicano office? and is it only for chicano students?
Chicano Student Programs is a campus center in Costo Hall that dedicates its resources primarily to Chicano students, but everyone is welcomed. One of the many resources they provide is the loan of clickers to students. Keep in mind this is only a loan, so you will have to return the clicker at the end of the quarter. Thanks for your question!
how do second years get new student ID cards?
Visit the card office located in Bannockburn! (:
Hi! I had a question about contacting professors and what your recommendations/opinions would be. I graduated from UCR this past June and have been thinking about contacting a professor whom I have taken a class with in regards to possibly doing some work in her lab. I did well in her class and have talked to her several times; I've been thinking about her lab for a while and have been interested in it since I have taken her class. I think I just need some courage but what do you think? Thanks!
Hey! I would just send them a quick email, telling them you enjoyed their class and were interested in research opportunities. Be yourself, but be professional!
Do we have to set up an account to use any of the library public computers or do we just use our netID and password to sign in and use them?
No! The computers are already logged onto a general account, so you just login when using the printing or your R’Web. But always remember to log out.
Does the rent for the Palms on University include utilities?
I’m sorry, the Palms on University is not affiliated with UCR!
Isn’t financial aid supposed to distribute on its own? Or do we have to log in to our account and make a payment?
Financial aid distributes on its own! It just might take a few days for it to hit your account if you have direct deposit, or it may take a few days to mail out.
Sterling Highlander hasn't responded to phone or email for several days. How can I contact them?
Sorry, we are not affiliated with Sterling Highlander!
How can I take a gap year? Do I have to withdraw and reapply if I take a gap year or is there a certain process I can do so that I dont have to reapply?
Please speak with your academic advisor or speak with an advisor at your college department!
Hi! Do we need to show up to classes on time from 25th-27th? Or are we able to just see where they r those days and start showing up for actual counted class starting the 28th? Thank you for all the help you give!!!!
You should DEFINITELY go to the first class, because a lot of professors don’t let people join after the first day. So if you miss the first day, you won’t be able to take the class!
Do any of the residence halls have game rooms/pool tables? Yes! (:
As in my previous question about changing majors, Are freshmen allowed to change majors right away or do we have to wait? And also where can we go to change the major?
I wouldn’t be too worried about changing your major as long as you’re staying in the same college. Worry about your breadth classes and prereqs, and try to make an appointment with your advisor soon!

On the days leading up to the 28th do we get to walk to our classes so we don't get lost and be late to class?
Yes! You can walk around campus during welcome week with your roommate just to get comfortable with the campus (:
I need help! Has anyone had raelynne hale for Spanish? I want to know if her class is hard, what kind of teacher she is, etc. and I haven't found any reviews about her online.
None of the team has had her, sorry :( She must be a graduate student or a TA!
Any tips on eating breakfast before an 8am class? Do the dining halls or subway or coffee bean usually have long lines in the morning?
The dining hall should be open before your class, so you’ll have time to grab something (: I used to go right when they opened and I’d have time to sit, eat, and study a bit before my class! And if you go that early, the lines are normally pretty minimal.
How do I know if I need to buy a clicker?
If you need to buy a clicker, it will say in your syllabus or the professor will tell you on the first day of class.
Where is there a complete list of all the items Glen Mor has for purchase?
There is no available list. I would advise against purchasing all of your necessities at Glen Mor though, it might be easier and cheaper just to stock up on that kind of stuff when you go home or when you go out with your friends.
What happens on the 25th? (The start of the quarter)
Nothing lol it’s just welcome week events in the dorms really, but nothing happens for the rest of us.
How long would it take to walk from Pentland Hills to AI's dining hall? Then from AI to the UNLH?
Walking from Pentland to AI used to take me five minutes (and I like to walk comfortably, slowly, and casually). From AI to UNLH, ten minutes MAX.
Does the gym provide equipment (basketballs, tennis balls/racquets, etc)?
Yes! (:
During welcome week, will we be given some sort of tour of the rec center? Or is it up to us to go check it out on our own? (Sorry, I didn't get a good tour during orientation)
Unfortunately, there is no tour of the rec center. But take your roommate or your friend and go check it out!
Are we allowed to shop online and receive packages through our dorm mailbox?
YESSSSS I lived off of this my first year lolol
Hi! What is the difference between dining dollars and bear bucks?
Dining dollars come with your dorm/meal plan and are “prepaid” in a sense. Bear bucks are added on to your card with real money, and you add them yourself (or your parents can)!
Do you recommend buying a small trash bin for our dorms? Or does the hall have a big trash can for everyone?
The room comes with a small trash bin and the hall also has a big trash can for everyone (:
Odd question - if we're living at one of the residence halls, the students don't have to supply toilet paper, correct?
NOPE (:
Do the lounges at the residence halls have a selection of movies to choose from or do students bring their own?
Students bring their own!
when do y'all poo when living in the dorms
the same time you would if you were living anywhere else?? lol

So do classes start on September 25 “The first day of the quarter” or on September 28 “the first day of instruction”???
Classes start on the first day of instruction, September 28.
How do we load bearbucks onto our card? And how much do you think we should start out with?
You go on My Card Account, and you can add money from there (: I keep this page as a Favorite on my phone, and I normally keep it empty unless I forget my debit card and I need a snack. I used to be able to use them for laundry, but I heard that is changing. I’ll keep you updated!
hi so I’m a freshman moving into the dorms soon, and I’ve tried to contact my roommate but they haven’t really responded much. I was wondering if that happens often where people move in not knowing much about their roommate and how to ease the transition of living with someone you barely know
You just kind of ease into it. I remember it being really quiet and awkward the day of move in, and you just kind of start little by asking, “hey wanna go check out the dining hall with me?” or “wanna go explore the campus?” Ask if they want to walk to UV or if they want to watch a movie in the lounge. You’ll be spending all year with them so you’ll have time to ease into it, but just try to be warm and welcoming (:
Hi! I was wondering what clicker questions are? I heard some professors use those
Classes that have clickers require you to purchase or rent this remote thing, and they’ll have clicker questions throughout lecture, where you use your remote to answer. It’s also another way to track attendance.
Is there a place on campus to get things like shampoo, laundry detergent, household items or do we need to go to a store off campus?
You can get the basics at Glen Mor Market, but it might be cheaper to find a friend who drives and to go off campus for things like that!
Do I need to complete Foreign language requirements to get into SOBA? Or can I complete foreign language requirements while I am in SOBA?
I wouldn’t be able to answer that directly because every person’s situation is different, but I would talk to your advisor by either sending them an email or going to walk-ins!
any advice for someone going into their third year who’s friendless and miserable?
Hello! My advice would be to try and use some of the resources on campus. My favorite is Costo Hall, I really found a home in the Women’s Resource Center. It’s a safe and inclusive space for me, and it’s been my go-to since my first year. After hanging out a resource center, you’ll begin to see some familiar faces and feel at home. I’m going into my third year too! Always feel free to reach out to us via anonymous questions or message us! We’re always here and really don’t want you to feel miserable! Our campus is so great once you find a place that makes you feel at your best. If you’re more interested in some of the programs offered to help make your stay here more enjoyable, direct message us and ask to talk to Caylin! Thanks and I’m sending good vibes your way! <3
What’s the difference between first day of the quarter and first day of instruction? Now I’m confused on when to show up to class
First day of instruction is September 28, and that’s the first day you go to class. The first day of the quarter is when student workers begin working 19 hours a week, and when the term officially starts, but classes officially start the 28.
Can you post pictures or describe what each room in the residential halls looks like?
We have YouTube videos on A-I and Pentland (: Unfortunately we couldn’t get anything for Lothian because they were under construction! But subscribe and hopefully we can get a Lothian tour up one day!
How do I join the UCR newspaper team?
Here is the contact info for The Highlander, our school newspaper. I would send an email or call the office letting them know you’re interested in contributing by becoming a part of the team. Good luck and let us know how it goes! (:
Hi, is the deferment plan available to students that are receiving financial aid? Thank you in advance!
Hello! If you still have fees due after aid, the deferment plan should be available. Please contact financial aid at (951) 827-3878 as soon as possible, as fees were due last Friday!
Hello! I'm an incoming freshman and I wanted to know how Math 004 by Robert Lam is? Thanks!
None of the team has had Math 004 with Robert Lam, but you can always check out Rate My Professor (:

If we are living in the plaza what furniture maker should we bring
It’s unfurnished, so you’ll need to bring a bed for sure. All the other stuff is up to you. You can bring a desk, a TV, a couch, a chair, a kitchen table, things like that.
when does ucr usually drop concert line ups? I'm so excited for block party!
It usually comes out the week before!
how do i get ahold of financial aid? everytime i call it says all the employees are occupied and then hangs up on me. ive sent emails too and nothing
I’m so sorry about that. They’ve been so busy, the best way to get ahold of them is probably by coming on campus.
How do you link your class schedule on R'Web to Google Calendar? I think it was mentioned in one of the previous posts, but I couldn't figure it out.
If you log into your R’Web and go to your term schedule, there is a little icon in the top right corner that looks like a calendar. From there you email your schedule to your email, and you can drag and drop the .ics file to your google calendar.
Hi! I was wondering what to do about clickers. I googled my chemistry professor and people say we use them a lot in class. Should I buy a clicker during 0 week before classes start, or would it be better to buy one beforehand? Also, does it matter what brand of lab coat I buy?
I would wait to buy or rent a clicker until after the first day of class. There’s also groups on Facebook where people sell used clickers for a cheaper price. And not that I know of, I know people usually order them from the bookstore or from amazon..
Is there any way to know if a triple in Pentland is a bunk style or loft style before move-in day? (3 other people asked the same question, but the answer is here!)
Not that I know of, I’m sorry! :(
Do you know if the lockers outside the dining halls tend to be all full often/at all? and do we need to bring an actual lock or are they unlocked with our ID card?
They’re so/so. During busy times, it might be hard to find a locker but for the most part, you can always find a free locker. The lockers come with a key so you don’t have to worry about a lock!
When would I get my financial aid award money? Does it go directly to my tuition for the quarter? Does it come in check or would I have to enter a credit card so it can be deposited?
If you’re getting a refund, it should cover what ever is needed for tuition and then the remainder will be sent to you. If you haven’t signed up for direct deposit yet (which I highly recommend), then it’ll be mailed to you in the form of a check!
How do I use the deferred payment plan? After I signed up, my account still says to pay 10k. I'm really confused so how much do I have to pay for tuition by September 15th?
You have to wait a couple days to hear if you got approved for the deferred payment plan. When signing up, it should have also had a breakdown of the costs and the dates. Please contact financial aid at (951) 827-3204 for any more questions regarding financial aid!
If I'm still on the waitlist for a class (only discussion, not lecture), should I still show up in case the professor calls my name while taking roll?
While most Professor’s don’t take roll in college, you should still go to class if you’re on a waitlist just in case a student doesn’t show up and you can take their spot! Speak with the professor after class and let them know you’re on the waitlist. Good luck!
Hello, it's been a tough week for undocumented students... and I was wondering if after the DACA removal will we be able to still have financial aid? I've called the financial aid office but they don't answer or just cut the call.
Please click here to see UC President Napolitano’s statement on DACA. “The University of California will continue to stand with Dreamers and their supporters as we fight to keep the program alive,” and the same goes for UCR. Financial Aid shouldn’t be affected by this in the meantime! Please let us know if you have any other questions or just need to talk <3
Do dorms at Aberdeen have dressers under the beds like Lothian?
Yes! Please check out our tour of Aberdeen on our Youtube channel, like, and subscribe!
Are we allowed to bring someone who doesn't go to ucr to block party?
Block Party is exclusively for UCR students, but all of the other concerts sell tickets for people that aren’t UCR students.
I know we get like a parking permit for move in day (residence halls) but are we supposed to pre print it or something or do we get it on the move in day itself at campus?
Your personalized assignment brochure that you received in the mail has a one time parking pass for move in. Good luck and we’re glad to have you!
Where did you find housing in salt lake?
I’m not quite sure I get your question, sorry! :(
What are the dimensions for the bedrooms in the UCR campus apartments, specifically the ones for the Falkirk one bedroom, one bathroom apartments? Do you think a queen sized bed would fit (I don't know the size of my roommate's bed)
I don’t have the exact dimensions, but I think a queen should fit. Your half of the room might not have as much space for anything else though :/ Make sure you don’t take any of your roommates space!
When is the last day to register/change classes? I will be taking the MAE on the 15th, would it be too late then? How long until I get my results back, in order to know which math I need to be placed in?
That won’t be too late! You can adjust your class schedule up until the second week of class. The only problem is there might not be a lot of seats left!
when do classes start?
Classes start September 28. Are you excited? I am!!!
What exactly is a R course? And what are the pros/cons of taking a R course?
R’Courses are classes taught by fellow students. Pros are that they only meet once a week, there is normally less homework, and the opportunity to be in a student led class allows for insightful conversation. A con would be that they’re only 1 unit, which could also be a con if you want to test out the waters in another field of study!
I don't want to sound like a downer but I'm an incoming freshman I'm scared I'm really not gonna like it here. There's a huge transfer rate and I hear a lot of people say that there's not a lot of motivation and there is nothing to do without a car. I also tried reaching out to a lot of people and people are nice at first but then won't respond at all after. Being honest what is the worst part of the school in your opinion?
I came in to UCR with the idea of transferring when it was convenient for me (once I learned how to drive and got my gen eds out of the way). By the end of my first year, I was completely in love with UCR, and at the beginning of my third year, I am still just in love and still can’t drive lol. Riverside, without a doubt, is the perfect community for me for what I am studying, and the resources have been so amazing. I’ve had amazing internships, job opportunities, and classes here - I even met my fiance here! And there’s things to do within walking distance, but if not, one of your friends is sure to have a car. Give it a chance, I came into UCR as my back up school after having to decline my dream school for financial reasons, and honestly, there’s no where else I’d rather be.

Hi! I was wondering what type of backpacks you recommend? And also how do people typically organize their things for their classes? Is it like different binders/folders? Or maybe different backpacks? thanks in advance :)
Great question! You read our minds, that will actually be a video coming up on our YouTube channel in October! And thank you for your wonderful questions! (: Most people just use different notebooks for each class, and if they’re not too bulky you can keep them all in your backpack at once! Or if you’re a computer person, you can keep most of your supplies and notes on your computer. As for backpacks, I go back and forth between a shoulder bag purse thingy during the hotter months or when I’m taking less classes, and I use a Levi’s backpack during the school year. Anything will do, but you may need a bigger backpack if you plan on bringing lunch everyday!
Do you recommend getting any of the school supplies listed on R web (like books, lab coats, etc.) or just getting basic ones (like pens, paper, backpack) until we go to the 1st day of class and see what the professor says to bring?
I recommend waiting until the first day, except for lab coats. If you know you’re for sure taking the class that requires a lab coat and you don’t plan on dropping, you might need your lab coat sooner than later.
What is PSYC 001 like with Willits? Do you know if it's easy or hard?
None of the social media team has taken PSYC001, but you can always check Rate My Professor!
So im undeclared and apparently you're suppose to declare a major when you have 90 units or smt or u get a hold on your registration ??? But what if i dont know what to declare as? Or if i dont have the prereqs to declare yet?? So stressed out bc im 14 units away from 90
You REALLY need to go talk to your advisor and discuss your options. If you have a hold, that can’t be lifted unless you go talk to your advisor. If you plan on graduating in four years, you should probably get this sorted out as soon as possible!
Hi I applied for UCR campus apartments two months ago but they still haven't assigned any apartments to me. I don't know what happened but I need to sign the contract and move into the apartment on September 12th when school starts. Should I contact the housing dept or what else can I do to solve the problem?
Please contact housing at (951) 827-6350. I hope you can get this sorted out!
I am super upset about my housing situation. Housing just gives vague replies and told all freshmen that further requests won't be taken until after move in day. But realistically speaking, is it even possible to switch dorms? Have you heard of anyone who has successfully done so?
It’s been done before, but it’ll take a while (a couple weeks after moving in). Sorry!
Where do we find the textbooks we need for this upcoming quarter?
If you go on your R’Web, on the home page there should be a button under “Authorized Applications” titled “Textbooks.”
With the maximum amount of units to graduate being 216, are those 216 units assumed to be all passing units, or attempted units?
I assume they’d all be passing units, since you don’t get credit for a class unless you pass it. But with questions like this, always make sure to double check with your advisor!
When does the second pass of registration begin for me? (I'm a sophomore.)
Second pass for everyone begins today! (September 6) And for future reference, you can check that by checking the registration button on R’Web (:
Hey! So I'm taking art 006 this fall as a freshman and I'm kind of nervous because I've never heard about this class before. Does the professor call on his students to answer questions? Also, in discussions does everyone have to talk? Talking in front of the class kind of gives me anxiety lol
Hey! Again, I can not recommend this class enough! It is still one of my favorite classes ever, and would definitely recommend Professor Brookshire. I wish I had taken this class as a freshman because I feel like it would have been such an amazing foundation to have for the rest of my studies here at UCR. And tell your anxiety not to worry, this class is totally safe and welcoming. He doesn’t call on students but encourages students to participate to help people communicate different ideas and opinions in a respectful way. I NEVER used to talk in class until I had this class. Good luck and enjoy! (:
When isn't Fall Move In Day??? And when do us freshman officially start class??
You should have gotten your housing assignment September 1, and that should tell you when you are able to move in. Class starts officially for everyone on Thursday, the 28.
On my portal it says they have not received a Highlander Orientation attendance record yet. I'm worried I don't know what to do to. Was there something exactly I had to send?
You should be fine as long as you attended orientation, it may just take a while to process!
My advisor STILL hasn't replied to me. What's the *maximum* wait I can expect? Also, why don't they hire more advisors?
Beats me. If you haven’t heard back by now, I would try calling!
I just found out my roommate assignment and it is someone who has a different background as me. From our different cultures, we might clash so how do I make sure we get along and the year goes by smoothly? (Clashes as in cooking, shoes off in the house, etc)
I would still give it a chance. I completely understand that it could be challenging, but you will both learn a lot in the process in terms of acceptance and tolerance. As for things like shoes off in the house, you’re only really in control of your half of the room, but your roommate should understand and respect your boundaries. My roommate and I were opposites in terms in religion (she was agnostic) and she’s still one of my closest friends. We learned a lot about each other and learned to respect each others beliefs and we also got a great friendship out of it!
What do I do if I need to pay for my tuition but my financial aid hasn't been processed yet? I'm REALLY scared and I've contacted both Student Billing Service (which the woman talking to me was NOT helpful at all) and Financial Aid in which they said they'll process it but hasn't been done yet. I can't afford all the tuition at once! It's so much money. I've submitted my paperwork since April. I'm REALLY scared. Please help me. Thank you
If this is an issue with Financial Aid and it’s not processed in time because of something on their end, you will not be held accountable for it! If you took all the necessary steps before the deadline and you’re just waiting for it on their end, you should be okay.
I got put into a triple room and don't want that at all, is there a way we can contact housing to hopefully get moved into just a double?
You will be able to contact housing after you move-in, but I think the chances are slim to get your dorm switched (but not impossible!)
which buildings are glen mor 2?
E, F, J, H, I, M, N and we’re not sure of the rest. Sorry! :(
I am registered for a class at MSE that ends at 11am and my next class is at Spieth Hall. Do yo think the ten minute passing period is enough time? What about if the class goes over a little?
Ten minutes is enough time to get from MSE to Spieth!
The housing website says Falkirk has internet provided, but I've also heard that you need to provide your own router if you want wifi, is that true or is the campus wifi still available?
Campus wifi is still available in Falkirk!
What is zero week like for freshman in the dorms? Are there parties?
It is just a good time to unpack, get to know your roommate, and explore the campus and the Riverside area without the time constraints of classes (:
I will be taking rlst 004 with Wilcox in the fall term. Have you heard anything about this professor like how hard or easy she is? Thank you! :)
Unfortunately none of the social media team has taken this, but you can always use Rate My Professor (:
Is the wardrobe that a triple room offers for the third person a lot smaller than the closet? If so does the person that gets the wardrobe have something else they can use to store their clothes?
It’s about the same size as the closets!
i've been hearing that a pentland triple (not a loft) is incredibly small. i saw the double rooms at orientation and was wondering if a triple is the same size, just with more furniture?
Yes, it is the same size!
How do I know if I get a regular triple or a lofted triple at pentland hills?
If it doesn’t indicate it in your housing assignment, I don’t think there’s a way to find out until you get there :/ Try giving housing a call at (951) 827-6350.
I got placed in West Lothian and while i know that the set ups of all the residence halls are pretty much the same (with the exception of Pentland Hills) ive heard that West Lo is the worst place to dorm :/ do you think it's possible that rooms will open up in East Lo if people switch around their roommates and things like that?
It’s possible but unlikely, buuuuuuuuuut a little birdie told me Lothian has been renovated this summer!
Hi! i was wondering if you could tell me a little about the set up of the residence halls? specifically if it's a co-ed floor or single sex floor?
Lothian and A-I are Co-Ed floors, and Pentland is a co-ed floor as well, but single sex for each hall (there are four halls per floor).
I'm not able to walk in, and my advisor hasn't replied to my email. What's the best way to get in contact?
Try giving your advisor’s department a call and let them know you’ve been having issues getting in contact with your advisor, and let them know how long it’s been since you first emailed.
Which building is Pentland Hills SiMS community in?
It changes every year, we’re not sure yet about this year!

If i already have medical insurance who would I contact so that I wouldn't be under the school's insurance anymore?
Go to the Student Health Services website (linked), read the link titled “Before you submit a waiver” and then you can fill out the waiver from there. It will tell you right after you’ve completed it whether or not you’re approved. Hurry though, today is the last day to fill out a waiver before the $50 late fee.
Do students receive a planner, UCR lanyard, or any other item on move in day or the first week of school?
When I moved in, they gave UCR lanyards and a welcome packet. It may be different every year, but I’m pretty sure you’ll at least get the lanyard and the packet regardless.
So, I should wait until the first day to buy my textbooks? And how do I know if I need to buy a lab coat? And is there a school supply list?
Yes, I would wait until after your first day of the class to buy your textbooks. If you need to buy a lab coat, your professor will let you know. And no, there is no school supply list, but as syllabi get posted they may have required supplies for the course. Don’t worry too much, college is a bit more lenient with stuff like this!
Can Extension students go to Block Party?
Current UCR undergraduates, graduates, International, or Extension students are invited to Block Party. Make sure to bring your R’Card, as that is your ticket in!
Why are students forced to go from CNAS to CHASS for low GPA?
All of the majors in CNAS require math and science, and CHASS has more options available. If you are not doing well in CNAS, they have you switch to a different college so you can continue to study in something that may better suit you.
How do I enroll in Extension?
Step #1: Find Your Class(es) Choose your class(es) from the Extension print catalog or explore their Course Catalog online. Search by course or program.
Step #2: Add To Cart Click "Add to Cart" to add the class(es) you want to your Cart.
Step #3: Pay Online Once you have selected all the classes you want, use Checkout to pay using your VISA, MasterCard, or Discover.
Why is the Extension center separate from UCR?
Extension differs from UCR in that the Extension is a professional studies program, and is also where students can complete requirements when seeking readmission to the school. The extension center is also where students who study abroad AT UC Riverside study. Although the university and the extension center are linked, they’re not the same things. For example, if I got to UCR for art, I will graduate with a BA in Studio Art from UCR. If I go to the Extension center for art related courses, I can obtain a professional certificate for digital arts and design from the Extension center. One shows that you’ve studied general education and have an adequate understanding of your area of study, while the other shows that you have a certification in a specific topic or skill.
Why is financial aid not available for Extension students?
As for financial aid, there are loan applications and scholarships (linked) available through Extension.
Why do students who leave and return have to take classes at the Extension Center?
It’s a way to qualify for readmission. You can also take classes at another university or college in the meantime.
Why is housing not offered to Extension students?
Again, Extension studies are not similar to undergraduate or graduate school studies through UCR.
What else isn't offered to Extension students?
I’m not really sure. You have access to the same campus, food, and resources. I think it’s mostly just a price difference and the type of studies available.
how do i sign up for direct deposit with my financial aid?

Is it true we're getting new restaurants and if so will they be open by the time school starts?
Yes we are! We’re getting The Habit, Chronic Tacos, and a few others. As of right now, construction is still under way, but I imagine they should be done shortly after school starts!
what is the party scene like at ucr?
Like any other college, UCR has its fair share of parties. Although parties are not allowed on campus, they are normally held at off campus locations and are not affiliated with the school. If party life isn’t for you, there’s amazing free events always being held at school!

Welcome back highlanders! Sorry for the delay, but we’re here to get back to your questions!
When are we allowed to change our major?
Because each student’s situation is different, I would advise going to speak to your academic advisor. Good luck!
Hello! Are we allowed to change classes during the first week of school? Or do we have to drop them and add them again online? I received an email that asked me to change my class during “second ~” (something)
Yes! You are allowed to switch up your schedule until next week. You don’t have to drop all of your classes if you’re only trying to replace one!
do we need any keys to get into our dorms and mailboxes or is it all through our id card?
Keys (:
Is there an alternative route to get to the rec center? The route we took during orientation is very steep and I’m scared I may slip one day
There should be a ramp to the left of the hill leading down to the SRC (:
Since classes start next Thursday, we attend our classes scheduled only for that day, correct? Then the following week we go through normally?
Correct! Sorry for the late response :(
can you get a refund check every quarter
Yes you can
Hi! I'm an incoming freshman and i was just wondering if you know how I could join UCR's track & field team or if there are tryours/requirements?
I’m actually not quite sure :/ try following @ucrathletics on IG for any updates!
Are the laundry machines capable of taking powder detergent? Or is strictly liquid detergent?
Because none of us live in the residence halls, your best bet would be to ask your RA.
Can we start mailing things to our new mailbox at the residence halls even though we haven’t moved in yet? (My package will “arrive in about 2-5 days” and it’d be more convenient for it to arrive at school rather than at home. Thanks.)
You should be fine. Happy shopping!
Hi! So I'm on the waitlist for MCS001 and I wondering if any of the staff has taken the course and/or knows the professor?
heeeeeeeeeeeeey you’re talking to an MCS major! I took my intro class with Professor Laura Harris, so I don’t really know anything about Professor Andersen :( My course as a whole wasn’t too bad though, just make sure you’re doing your readings! And if you ever get the chance, take a course with Professor Rodenbeck! She’s one of my favorites!
Do all of the buildings at Pentland Hills have three floors of dorm rooms? Or do some of them only have two floors?
Ummmmmmmmm...... three I believe? But some bottom floors are used as resources/study rooms/etc.
In The Palms on University, what's the difference between a standard and deluxe floor plan?
I apologize, The Palms isn’t affiliated with UCR. Good luck!
Where can I find details about all the frat rush parites?
Walk by the tables near the belltower. You might not hear about parties, but you can hear about rush week events!
hi I'm a freshman and I decided to take a classical studies course as a breadth course but I read that the professor is a tough grader and can assign a lot of reading and it kinda scared me. I know an experience with a professor is different for everyone but are there any tips on dealing with tough professors that expect a lot from you?
I know it can be incredibly intimidating, but just make sure you’re trying your hardest. Try to prove something to yourself and this professor, and by working hard in this class, maybe you’ll develop study skills and motivation to do well in all of your other classes. If you need help staying motivated, check out #studyblr and #studysthetics. Good luck and keep us updated!
Is it too late to get housing? (off campus?) How would I go about this?
Most people who live off campus use the UCR Housing facebook page to see if anyone needs roommates, or they find a place via a friend. You can always check apartments in this zip code too!
Why doesn't Glen Mor publish their list of products? Why has no one assembled an unofficial list?
I don’t think it’s supposed to be used for all of your grocery store needs, but for odds and ends thing you may need every once in a while. Sorry!

I head that in East Lothian and in Pentland each room has its personalized AC. However if you are in the other two possible dorms there isn't. Then who decides if the AC remains on throughout the day or night? Because it gets really hot at Riverside.
You won’t ever really have a problem with your room being too hot. If anything, I remember all of the housing options being cool ALL THE TIME.
When do campus apartment residents know who there roommates are?
Housing assignments come out September 1.
will you be able to change your major this school year even if youve already registered for classes?
Yes! If you think you’re going to change majors, try to get breadth courses or electives out of the way this first quarter. You can talk to your advisor about changing your major once school starts.
How early should we be looking for jobs for work study?
You can start applying on ScotJobs now (:
hi, i'm an incoming freshman and i was wondering if you could describe move in day a little? (for the residence halls)
I’ll publish a blog on it this upcoming Tuesday so I can go more in depth (:
For registration it says we can register again on September 6 as like a second pass? How does that work? Do more classes just open up or what? I'm a little confused?
First pass has a unit cap, so the unit cap for second pass is raised to 20/21 units. More classes don’t open up necessarily, but you can probably add an additional class or two to your schedule, or change your current schedule.
Do you know if there will be more ENGL001C classes opening up for the 2nd pass of registration on Sept. 6?
There won’t be any more classes opening up, but there might be more seats available once people are dropped for late tuition payments!
Hello! Shout out to you guys for answering all my questions and thank you so much! 😅 soo here's another question: is there 99c stores near by?
Omg shout out to you for giving me questions to answer! (: And yes! There is one on University Ave. about five minutes away by car.
do we have to participate in the humanities courses? I'm such an introvert I hate talking in front of the class :/
Humanities courses are mandatory for breadth! Don’t worry, you don’t have to talk in front of the class most of the time! I’m an introvert two, and both of my majors are in the humanities so no worries. Also, I think humanities based courses are GREAT for helping you to consider and respect opinions or ideas outside of your own, while also helping you to think critically!
My acedemic advisor hasn't replied to my email. What should I do?
Try looking at their availability for walk-ins. Advisors can be kind of busy during this time because they are helping incoming freshman and transfers register for classes.
What class has only two people? I might want to register for it.
LOL check out the schedule of classes, and click the box that says “open sessions.” The anon that left the question didn’t specify which class, but you might find some interesting open classes this way!
i'm gonna be staying in either AI or Lothian and i was wondering what we can use to raise our beds for extra storage? thanks! :)
You can fill out a work order once you move in to have your bed raised even more (: Thank you for being so polite, it makes my day!
I feel like I'm not really welcome on campus.
Are you a current student here? There are a lot of resources on campus that promote diversity and are incredibly inclusive. Maybe just find the program that feels right for you that makes you feel more comfortable on campus. I know it can take a while, but I want you to know you are more than welcome here and we’re so happy to have you (: Stay strong, motivated, and positive and the same vibes will come your way. Good luck and always feel free to reach out to us, we’re here every day!!

When will I know who my roommate is ? How can I find out that info?
Housing assignments are available starting September 1. Who’s ready?!?!
Hello! I was wondering if students can still work in campus even if they weren't given study work in their financial aid award?
Yes! You can apply for on campus jobs even if you were not given work study (: but there are some positions available on campus that are specifically for work study. Check out ScotJobs for more info!
What's the process for returning to UCR?
If you have lapsed, you will need to fill out a readmission application to resume your education at UCR. Here is the readmission application!
Are there drugstores/pharmacies or something similar on campus that we could go to if we need to get medicine?
There are some basic medications available at some of the on campus stores, but if you have a prescription medication that needs to be filled and you have the school insurance, you can get it filled at Student Health Services.
Where do we go to fill in the entrance counseling and promissory note for the Perkins Loan? The URL the school offers doesn't work and the financial aid office isn't answering calls
To sign the promissory note for your institutional loan/scholarship, please visit the E-Sign Web Site for Institutional Loans. This link should be available through your R’Web, under the financial aid button.
Hello! I am currently a senior and was wondering is UCR an LGBT friendly school? Also do you have study abroad programs?
Hey! Yes we are, and we are very proud of our diversity on campus! We also have LGBT community housing in Pentland and an LGBTQ Resource Center (YouTube video coming soon). AAAAND we have a great Study Abroad office, and that video is going live on our YouTube this Thursday. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it!
I am an incoming freshman and have begun doing some dorm room shopping. Something I am considering buying is a small-foldable vacuum. However, before I buy this I wanted to ask if the Residential Halls for freshman at UCR provide vacuums that can be rented? Thanks!
First off, welcome to the Highlander family! Second, there is a vacuum available, but halls or buildings share them. I don’t think buying a vacuum is a bad idea, but keep in mind there is limited space. Good luck and enjoy your time here!
Hello, so I know that college students can get Office365 for free. I tried to take advantage of this offer (bc I'm broke lol) but when I input my UCR email the website says that they couldn't find it... Have any of you been able to download it?
You have to input your UCR email in a different format ([email protected]),and it should work from there. And I’m broke too, don’t worry lolol take advantage of these resources!!! Visit this page for more info!
Should i get the textbooks I need for my classes before the first day of school or wait until the first day to find out if I actually need them? Thank you!
I always wait until after the first day because some professors provide the required texts as free pdfs!
is there a target near campus?
There are some about ten minutes away in Moreno Valley, near Tyler Mall, and one on Arlington!
If only 2 students are enrolled in a class is it likely that the course will be cancelled ?
Probably :( But students aren’t done registering so don’t lose hope!
Hello, I am a transfer student that is about to start this fall. I transfered from my college with around 100 units. I have already submitted my transcripts, however on my student profile it says my class as a freshman. I am slightly confused on that. On top of that I am not able to access the degree audit to see anything about my units or anything.
Please call the Registrar’s Office at (951) 827-7284 or visit the Highlander One Stop Shop to get this resolved as soon as possible!
i will be taking religious studies 004 (RLST 004). is it hard or easy?
I genuinely can’t say, it depends on who the professor is and what your work ethic is like as a student! If you make an effort to study on a regular basis, you can pass most classes easy! It all really depends on how you approach it. If you go into class with the assumption it’s hard, you’re just going to make it hard on yourself. Keep your chin up and your coffee cup full, you can do this!
when does UCR post how much your cost will be for the quarter? Or am I not checking it right?
Billing statements recently got sent out! Make sure you check your UCR email and just search up billing statements.

I am living at Glen Mor next year. I thought I signed up for the 120 meal plan but I realized that I put the market plan. Can I still change it ? I have zero experience cooking
No worries! During the first two weeks of the academic year, you’re allowed to change your dining plan. Contact your Resident Services Office (RSO) for more info.
whats the process like to get a job at UCR? (specifically dining)
Although I don’t have experience working with dining, you can apply for on campus jobs through ScotJobs. You apply online and if a position is interested in you, they’ll call or email you (this should be the same with dining as well). There is also a Career Center on campus so take advantage of that!
UPDATE: Thank you for your comment @docbirdy! “For dining we don’t have a Scott jobs application or an online application. Stop by our office at Bannockburn J 115 to fill out an application though! We’re accepting them until the end of august. We do over the phone interviews and occasionally on the spot ones if someone is available.”
I heard from various people (both upperclassmen and freshmans) that UCR won't be allowing those who dorm their 1st year to purchase a parking permit. Is this true? If so, are there any exceptions to the new rule? I really need to bring my car for reasons pertaining to work and family/health issues. Who can I contact to address my concerns regarding parking permits?
Unfortunately, due to limited parking availability, freshman residents will not be allowed to bring a vehicle to campus, BUT you are able to submit an appeal here. For more information and options on transportation for freshman residents, please visit this link.
http://parking.ucr.edu/docs/freshman_resident_parking.pdf
Hello! I'm an incoming freshman and I recently completed my first college course through my local community college. (English 101, equivalent to English 1a at UCR) Will my grade transfer as well, or is it only the credits that transfer? I got a B in the class, and I'm worried that it'll ruin my GPA.
Please refer to your advisor, as transfer credits can differ depending on the major! I don’t believe your grade should transfer only, but that is an answer your advisor will be able to answer at your orientation!
Does BCOE not publish laptop recommendations anymore?
Here you go! (click here)
What is Greek life at UCR like? I've been debating on whether or not I want to join because it looks like a great social opportunity. But the idea of rushing and people judging if I'm a good fit based on my looks/ a first impression scare me. I also want to join clubs, and I'm not sure if sororities take up too much time.
There are many options available for Greek life! Any Greek organization on campus will be a great social opportunity, but some have different focuses. For example, there are Greek orgs that focus more on academics, community service, or even majors. There are even cultural sororities and fraternities! Although Greek life does take a bit of time, if you join the right one for you, you will be joining a community that helps you transition and build a home away from home.

I'm taking 15 units this year. How much is every class? How is it calculated?
Regardless of how many units you are taking, tuition each year is $15,211 to be a full time student. If you break it down per quarter, each quarter comes out to a little over $5,000 (summer is not included). So the price per class really changes depending on how many units you are taking. If you are taking 12 units/3 classes, or 20 units/5 classes, you would divide the quarter cost by how many classes you are taking. Here is the link for tuition costs at UCR. Hope that helps!
I signed up for my classes at orientation, and I realized that my lectures also have a discussion section linked to them. What exactly is the purpose of these discussion classes? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm just not used to these different classes since I was homeschooled in high school
This isn’t a dumb question at all, a lot of incoming students actually have this question! So lectures normally have a lot of students (some classes can have up to 300!), which doesn’t allow a lot of one on one time with the professor to ask any questions you may have. The discussion is a smaller classroom setting, with around 20 students. Your discussion is led by a T.A., who will be able to help you with any questions, since it might be a little harder to ask your professor directly.
I'm planning to dorm in Pentland (double) and I was wondering if we're allowed to get bed risers to lift our beds? I just want to make sure that I can fit all my storage without making my room look cramped.
Here is a copy of UCR’s residence hall handbook. I believe you’re allowed to get bed risers, but the beds at Pentland are already risen really high, enough to fit storage bins and all the things you need under your bed. I even brought a step stool because my bed was so tall I couldn’t get on without help! LOL
Can incoming freshmen already start applying for jobs at UCR? And where?
Take a look at ScotJobs, it’s never too early to start applying!
Does the financial aid office have summer hours? Or is it the regular 9-5?
If you’re visiting campus, you can stop by the Highlander One Stop Shop (HOSS) on the first floor of the Student Services Building anytime between 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. If you can’t make it in, go ahead and give them a call at (951)827-1012.
I'm really nervous about living on campus. I got guaranteed housing, but I chose Pentland as my top choice. I just got back from orientation, so I kind of got to see how the showers/bathrooms work. Is there ever an issue with the showers filling up fast and having to wait until someone gets out? What should I do to make myself feel more at home once I move-in?
Don’t be worried about living on campus! Living on campus will help you make friends and adapt to college life. When I lived at Pentland, there were never problems with the showers filling up because we all had different time schedules. To make yourself feel more at home, I would bring photos of family and friends and make sure you decorate your space so it feels comfortable to you. What worked well for me was bringing blankets from home because it didn’t feel like I was in some foreign, new space with all new furniture and decorations.
If I apply for fall 2018, when do I need my 60 transferable credits by?
As a transfer student, plan to complete 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter units) by the end of the next spring term, or the spring of 2018. Here is a transfer admission checklist for UCR!
I have just finished my first year here at UCR. I have to admit this past year was tough. Between family issues and getting in trouble with the school for plagiarism, I am determined to make my second year better than the last year. However, I have been talking to a friend who goes to another UC . Lately, Iv'e been thinking that maybe I should transfer there. It would be a great opportunity for me but Riverside is all I have known. What should I do ?
I advise doing what is best for you! Please don’t forget that UCR has a lot of resources available on campus such as case managers, counseling and psychological services, or the academic resource center. There are also opportunities to retake classes if need be, just don’t give up! Everyone goes through a barrier during their time here, it’s how we overcome it that matters!

I live far away from UCR and the latest train leaves at 6 however orientation ends at 5:30. But what time does it ACTUALLY end, meaning returning the key and getting packed?
If the schedule says orientation ends at 5:30, it is likely to end at that time. And if you’re worried about running out of time, let your orientation leader know and see if you can check out half an hour or so early (but let them know about this at the beginning of orientation). Make sure you have ride arrangements to the train station so you make it in time!
If I am a commuter, am I able to eat in residential dining or is it reserved for those with meal plans? Would they accept cash/ATM cards instead of dining dollars?
You are able to eat at any of the residential restaurants, but meals are normally around $10 (give or take) and it is buffet style. Yes, they do take cash/ATM cards as well! Also, if you have any friends that live in the res halls and they’re feeling generous, they get guest passes and can bring you in for free!
I recently got my financial aid award and I was wondering when would I have to pay off the federal direct Stafford loan, federal direct unsubstantiated Stafford loan, and federal direct parent plus loan if I were to accept them. And how does the award work to help pay for my tuition for the year?
If you accept the subsidized loan, you will have six months after graduation before interest starts accruing, and interest starts accruing right after accepting your unsubsidized loan. You can start making payments on these loans as soon as you want! If you notice you have a little leftover from your paycheck, you can make a payment towards your loans. You have a six month grace period after graduating before you have to start paying your loans in monthly payments. Visit this link for any more questions.
What is the waitlist policy for classes here at UCR?
If a spot opens up in the class, you’ll be notified through email that a spot has opened up and you have 24 hours within that notification to enroll in the class, or your spot will be dropped. Visit this link for more info!
I’m going into a triple. I have one roommate but we’re going random for the third one. We already have which beds we want and what basic roomie rules we have- any advice for approaching it when figure out who our third is?
Definitely just make sure you’re being fair! I know you all already have dibs on beds and everything, but if you all show up to move-in at the same time, it’s fair game. Once you get your housing assignment, your third roommate may have decided to share their contact information, and you can make a group chat and just introduce each other and the rules ahead of time so it’s not as awkward on move in day.
Are there any consequences to not submitting our immunization records on the patient portal? I already have my immunizations and documents on hand, but this is a question I'm wondering for students who never got vaccines or somewhere along that line due to their parents' beliefs (other than religious or medical reasons)
Please visit this link or contact Student Health Services at 951-827-3031 for more information.
During registration at orientation, I got placed into a learning community. What is the workshop for and what do you do there? All I know about learning communities is that you have a group of people in the same major as you that also have the same class as you.
Check out our most recent blog on learning communities to get some more information (:
I only live about an hour and half away from UCR, but I plan to live in the dorms. How much clothes should we bring for move-in day? Obviously, I know not to bring my whole wardrobe but I do want a variety of things to wear until I visit home. Also, how does move-in day work? Will we get an email about it? Do people just spend the whole day decorating and tidying up their rooms?
If you are planning on visiting home often (once a month or more), then you can always bring more clothes every time you come back. For now, I would just make sure you have enough clothes to last you a couple weeks that can handle the hot summer weather, and make sure you have a sweater just in case the weather throws you a curveball. Just try not to bring too many since space can be limited! You will get an email with your housing assignment on September 1st, and on move in day people really just spend time decorating or unpacking.
I'm not really into parties or anything like that, but I do like to attend other social events and go out often. Will I look like a loser if I don't go to parties while going to UCR?
Not at all! A lot of students don’t attend parties and there is nothing wrong with going to parties or not going to parties. Personally, I have only been to one or two parties during my whole time at UCR, and I’m already going into my third year. It’s just not my scene, but there’s also nothing wrong with going to parties either! Don’t ever feel pressured to go either!
How do people in college learn how to balance school work with their own lives? Is this something that comes naturally, or should I prepare a schedule or something?? I'm planning to work and live on campus, but I just have no idea what to expect for college life :(
This is a really great question! I think for some people it comes naturally, but for someone like me, I always need to have my planner updated. I’m currently working three jobs and I go to school full time, so I use a planner that’s broken up in half hour increments, so I can clearly see when I have work, class, appointments, tests, date nights, and I always schedule time for self care and self love so I don’t get overwhelmed with all my commitments. If you’d like, I can do a blog post soon on keeping a planner!
Do you have any advice on how to make friends and meet new people in college?
Make sure you’re communicating with your hall mates, and in zero week you can invite them places so you can all get to know each other. Other than that, try to get involved in clubs or organizations on campus! If that’s not for you, check out Costo Hall, home to our ethnic and gender programs on campus!
How do I report outside scholarships to UCR?
Some outside scholarships will give the check directly to you and you will not need to report them if that is the case. If the scholarship prefers to send the scholarship to the university, give them the mailing address for the financial aid office, and your award amount from the school may or may not be affected afterwards.
hi! I have a question... I'm a bit stressed out because I submitted a financial aid document June 16/17 and I came in because I received an email saying that it was incomplete and when I came in, I finished it and completed it in front of the woman and she stamped it in front of me saying that it was complete. Its' been over a month and my r'web still says its incomplete and I've tried calling the fin aid office but I can never get through to them. (i've been on hold over 30 min). please help!
Because Undergraduate Admissions is a different department, I would advise you continue to call if you can not come on campus. If you can come on campus, you should try to speak with Financial Aid directly. Unfortunately, documents can sometimes take a while to process, so if you haven’t heard anything by the end of this week, I would definitely go in!
Hello! When is move in day this fall? I've been trying to find the date online with no luck.
Room assignments and more information on move in will be available to view starting September 1st, you’ll get more information then!

If you live in residence halls, like Pentland Hills, where would you do your laundry and for how much? Sorry, I just can't find any solid info online about the 'where' and how much it will be per wash/load.. Thank you!!!
There are laundry rooms in each building! You load Bear Bucks on your card, and it comes out to $2 per load ($1.25 for washing, $0.75 for drying).
Hello! I have a 9am class at UV THE9, and I plan to be living in Pentland Hills. I was wondering how I would get to the class, without owning a car, because it looks like it's across the highway? Is there a specific RTA bus route, or are is it possible to walk (is it a short/long walking distance)? Thank you so so much!!!
Most students walk! I used to live in the furthest Pentland building and it would take me twenty minutes to walk to my 9am class at the UV. You would walk towards campus and then under the bridge on University Ave. You can also use a bike, scooter, or skateboard if you want to get there faster.
i live in norcal and i'm not driving down for move in day until the morning of because it's the only time that works for my family. i'm scared i won't make it in time to check in because it's a 6-8 hour drive? even if i leave earlier in the morning, i'm scared something will go wrong and i won't be able to get there in time but i don't know if i should talk to the rso about it because i feel like all of my worries are just in my brain and that there's really nothing to be concerned about ?? help
Don’t worry! If it makes you feel better, call the RSO and let them know you are driving from far away and there is a possibility you’ll be running late. You can address any of your move in concerns with the RSO, that’s what they’re here for! (:
I'm going to be living in Pentland Hills for my freshman year, do you recommend bringing like two pans, a spatula, and cutting knife? I do want to cook from time to time.
There is only stove for two floors to share, so as long as you work out storage with your roommates/hallmates in the cabinets, you should have enough room to keep two small/medium sized pans, a spatula, and a cutting knife.
I really have no idea why, but I'm super scared to move out of the house and leave for college. (I only live 2 hours away from campus though) It's already the second week of August and idk if I can make it in college :( I don't want to disappoint myself or my parents. I want to do well in school, have fun with friends, and learn how to live more independently. How do I reassure myself with these feelings of anxiety?
There are many resources on campus to help you adjust to college. I highly recommend CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services). Students get a few free sessions a year, and I definitely think you should take advantage of it! As someone who is an advocate for self care and mental health awareness, I see no shame in using these resources to help you be the best you when leaving for college. There are also AMAZING resources at Costo Hall to help you build community in ethnic and gender programs, and there is a CARE department (Campus Advocacy, Resources, & Education) that also provides resources and support for survivors of violence. As someone who experiences anxiety regularly, these resources are what kept me focused and encouraged! Moving out and living on your own is such a great learning experience, and there are so many resources on campus to help students during this time of change. If you are interested in hearing more about this, message us back and let us know if you’re interested in reading a blog about mental health and resources on campus.
Do rooms in Pentland have cable? And if so, do I need a cord or something for the cable?
There is cable available for the suites! You will just need a standard coaxial cable to connect your TV directly to the wall.
My first class starts at 9:10 AM. I usually wake up at 7:30 everyday (as of now). I know this question largely depends on whether or not you're a morning person, but do you think it's THAT difficult to wake up early for classes? Like are there still people out there with 8-9AM's? Everybody tells me to stay away from morning classes and now I'm scared that I'll fail the class or something
If you’re productive at that time, I’d say go for it! I go to work in the mornings and my boyfriend has 8am classes and has no problem with it. It really depends on the person and what works best for you and your schedule. I stay away from 8am classes only because I normally take evening classes, and if I took 8ams with evening classes I would be on campus all day. If most of my classes were in the morning, then it’d be much easier. You CAN do 8ams if that’s your preference, and don’t let anyone discourage you if you think you’d do best in that kind of setting.
i have absolutely no experience working. can i still apply for a work study job? if so, do i still have a good chance of getting hired?
If you received work study in your financial aid award, you can apply for a work study job. If you did not get work study, you can still apply for on campus jobs. Even if you’ve never had a job, you will find a department on campus that likes your skills and personality and you will grow and learn in that position! It might be hard finding a job at first, but don’t let it get down, and make sure to always follow up!
What are discussion classes like? Do students have to participate a lot?
It really depends on the TA. There are some discussions that require participation as a grade, and others that do not dock points as long as long as there are members of the class that facilitate conversation.
What happens during week zero? I heard there are a lot of events / parties.
As someone who isn’t big into parties, I couldn’t really tell you about that part of zero week, sorry! But zero week is a time to get caught up with unpacking and getting settled in your new housing arrangements. There are no classes during zero week so it’s really a good time to get comfortable with the campus and your housemates/hallmates/roommates, etc.
What is the bedding size for beds at UCR dorms? I just need to know to buy sheets.
Twin XL, regular XL sheets won’t work! (Check out our YouTube video on Pentland Hills ;D)
If I move into my dorm with like carry-on's, is there enough space to store the carry on in the closet? Or is there a designated place fore storing like empty suitcases? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.
Don’t worry, it’s not a dumb question! This is a new experience for a lot of people, so thank you for having the courage to ask! There is room in the closet on the top shelf or at the bottom, but because the closet can be kind of cramped, I recommend storing it under your bed. The beds have a lot of storage space underneath!
Do I need to bring a printer for college? Is it more convinient?
There are many printing resources on campus! If you living in a dorm, you get a 400 free pages in the computer labs for the whole year. Separately, you get 300 free pages per quarter at Watkins. AAAAAAAND places like the Women’s Resource Center, the LGBTQ Resource Center, Asian Pacific Student Programs, and Chicano Student Programs offer free printing for smaller documents. It can be more convenient if you live off campus, but for the most part printing here is easily accessible and you already get a lot of printing for free here!
I'm really scared about getting a roommate that's messy, unorganized, etc. If I end up not liking my roommate, what are my choices? Am I stuck with this roommate for an entire year? Are there any options to live alone without a roommate on campus as a freshmen? Like a single dorm room?
Anonymous said:
I'm an incoming freshmen and I chose Pentland as my first choice for housing and I really hope I get it. Do students usually get their first choice? Is it a rare case scenario that students get their 2nd choice?
Students usually get their first choice, and I think the only exception to someone not getting their first choice is if they submitted housing applications late and there is limited availability.
You didn't answer my question. Is the tap water okay to drink?
You can drink it but most students bring their own filter.
Would I still have to readmit if I was never dismissed?
Yes. If you have lapsed, you will need to fill out a readmission application to resume your education at UCR. Here is the readmission application!
I applied for transfer to the winter quarter 2018, when will I be given their decision?
We are not sure of the specific date yet since transfer applications have been extended to August 11th! Follow our other social media channels and we should have occasional updates.

Choosing Your Major
If you are undeclared or still unsure about your major, don’t stress! You can still be a successful student without coming into your first year set on what you want to study.
It can be really stressful coming into your first or second year and not knowing if your major is right for you. My advice: take some time within your first couple years to explore your options through your breadth courses. I’ve known people who are set on going into the sciences or the humanities, but once they take classes in other areas of study they switch, double major, or minor in something completely different.
Switching Majors
My freshman roommate (still one of my closest friends) came in as a Psychology major, switched to Pre-Business towards the middle of her first year, and switched over to a Sociology major at the end of her second year (AND she’s graduating a year early. My boyfriend came in as a Pre-Business major, switched to Philosophy in his first year, finished his degree requirements early and is now studying Pre-Med while also being able to have a Philosophy degree by the time he graduates from UCR. Depending on the classes you take and the people you meet, you’ll be exposed to so many different areas of study that you can be interested in. And as you spend more time at UCR, don’t worry if your area of interest or direction changes, as long as you’re using the first couple years to really explore your breadth classes, no matter how many times you explore other majors, you should have time within your couple years to finish all of your major classes and #FinishIn4
Double Majors and Minors
Even though I came into my freshman orientation, convinced on graduating in four years as a Studio Art major and a business minor, I am now entering my third year as a double major in Studio Art AND Media & Cultural Studies. I had heard of Media & Cultural Studies as a major but had no idea how much I would love my major until after I took two or three classes in that department. I didn't begin to understand my love for the major, its diversity, its professors, and its teachings until I let myself get out of my set mindset. Don’t forget, if you find a subject you really love, you can also declare a minor; this option requires a lot less classes but you still have an opportunity to learn within that department. Although there is overwhelming pressure to know exactly what you want to do, college is a time to for you to learn, grow, and enjoy. Once you start coming here and choosing your classes, you'll find what sticks out to you most and what makes you most excited to start your future.
Finish in 4
I strongly advise, starting with your breadth courses (our name for gen. ed) or foreign language courses to start you off in your first year or so if you are unsure about your major. If you are worried about finishing within four years, make sure you are taking at least 15 units a quarter, or 45 units a year. Although 12 units a quarter is considered full time, 15 units a quarter will insure that you will finish with the minimum of 180 units by the end of your fourth year. If you fall behind, summer school is always an option as well! So knowing you have that flexibility within your first few terms, take time to explore major, double major, or minor options while making sure you are meeting your breadth requirements. Also keep in mind, breadth requirements are different for each school of study (Pre-Business, CHASS, CNAS, BCOE), so you may have to take different breadth classes than some of your friends. You will find out more about this at your orientation, or you can click on the college above to see an updated list of courses for Fall 2017.
Take Your Time!
So don't worry if you're coming into your first or second year and are still unsure about choosing your major. You are investing time, energy, and money into your education, and you want to make sure you are learning something you are truly passionate about (and a plus, you'll probably do MUCH better in classes you actually enjoy)!

How long is the MAE? If check in is at 9:50AM, around what time do most students finish their exam? (Trying to arrange transportation, thanks in advance)
Including check-in and paperwork, students spend around three hours on the MAE. Part 1 is 45 questions in 60 minutes, and Part 2 is 60 questions in 90 minutes. I would arrange for a ride for around 1 pm, and if you finish early, take a walk around campus and explore!
Residence halls provide cable(s) for TV's and it's up to the student to provide an actual TV, correct? If so, is it only one TV per room, or does each student bring in their own TV?
The residence hall comes equipped with a cable TV connection, but you and your roommate would have to work out who is bringing the TV or if you’re both bringing TV’s. For any more questions or clarifications, please contact housing at 951-827-6350.
Are we allowed to bring pepper spray for safety, my mom keeps pushing me to buy one
Moms are just looking out for you (: As far as I know, I haven’t heard anything against bringing pepper spray to campus, and I carry one with me as well. Just be careful! And I’ll keep you updated on this as I find out more.
Are incoming freshmans allowed to take classes through the UC cross campus enrollment? (UC Online?) Who do I talk to if I want to enroll in an online class this fall? I've already registered for classes, but I feel like taking one online would greatly help with my schedule, since I was homeschooled for a long time anyways.
Hi! Please follow this link and contact your academic advisor regarding your concern (email should work)!
I currently have 95 units, but on the RWeb degree audit it still classifies me as a sophomore, so I'm unable to register for classes needed for my major. Do I just wait for everything to update a few weeks into the quarter or would there be someone I could call and ask?
Are you currently taking summer classes? If you’re currently enrolled in units, they won’t count towards your unit count until you’ve completed them. If that isn’t the issue, I would contact your academic advisor through phone, walk-in, appointment, or email and try to get this cleared up. Hope that helps!
Hi I'm an incoming sophomore, if I wanted to take a quarter off (or maybe even a year) due to medical issues, would I be able to do that? If so how? And who do I speak to? If you could answer ASAP I would really appreciate it! (•:
Hello! I hope you’re doing well, and I’m wishing you the best with your health! <3 You can contact a case manager at 951-827-5000, and they can discuss your options with you. Here is the case management site for UCR, and I wish you the best.
Can we lower the beds in A-I so they're not that high?
Once you move in, you can submit a work order to have your bed raised or lowered.
Hello! I was wondering how tuition is payed off? I noticed that there's a deadline for the payment; however, financial aid comes in a couple of days after. I was wondering if you could explain?
Hi, so tuition for fall quarter is due on 9/15/17. If you receive financial aid that fully covers your tuition, then the school with subtract your tuition costs from your financial aid, and whatever aid you have remaining will be deposited in your bank account or a check. If your financial aid covers some of your tuition, that amount will be subtracted, and you will pay the remaining balance. Does this answer your question? You can view your student account on R’web.
How do I apply for an on campus job at the dining hall?
Stop by the dining office at Bannockburn J 115 to fill out an application! They will be accepting applications until the end of August, so hurry and get yours filled out!
So I graduated from UCR, didn't get in to Grad School can't find a job and am stuck at home taking care of my family. What do I do?
Keep your chin up! It is always a difficult transition for students graduating, but I’m sure if you stay optimistic and keep applying for work, something will come up. Good luck!
I'm confused about the UCR calendar during Winter Break. I read that Winter Quarter starts January 3rd but instruction doesn't start until the 8th. I then also learned that the dorms don't open until the morning of January 7th. Do we have to be at UCR on January 3rd or can we come back after January 3rd for when the dorms open again?
You can’t be back in your dorm until January 7th, and classes don’t start until the 8th, so TECHNICALLY you’re free to do whatever whenever on break until the 8th when classes start again (:
Hey! I'm taking religious studies in the fall and I was wondering how easy or hard it is? Is it a fun class? Thanks!
I wish I had a better answer to your question, but there are many religious studies classes and I’m not sure which one you’re talking about. :/
I am an incoming transfer and recently accepted my housing offer for Glen Mor. They told me my room is an ADA room, which is usually for people who are disabled, so there might be a few differences in this apartment compared to the others in Glen More. I was wondering what those differences were. I saw a video that briefly mentioned it, but there was no detail. Is anything besides the shower different in these apartments?
Please contact housing with this question at 951-827-6350, I’m sure there are some other differences but they’d be able to answer these questions!

Would I look weird if I spend some time walking to my classes after move-in day before instruction begins? I remember being lost on the first day of high school and I don't want to have the same experience this year
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. There are a couple days after move-in where you’ll have time to get comfortable before classes start. Maybe grab your roommate and take time to find each others classes, grab a bite to eat, and you’ll have fun! You’ll also run into a lot of new students doing the same thing, all incoming students are in the same boat.
I just finished registering for classes, but I noticed that I have 40 mins-1 hour gaps between my schedule. Any tips or advice on what to do? Should I just go to the library and study until my next class? Eat lunch? I feel like an hour isn't really enough time to go back to my dorm and head to class afterwards. Also, will having an evening class or two negatively affect my social life? I heard some clubs meet at night during the week and I don't want to miss out.
I know it might not seem like it now, but those gaps in between classes are blessings! Gaps are a great time to grab a snack at a Scotty Score or a restaurant on campus, since you may be kind of rushing going all the way back to your dorm to use a meal swipe (my favorite in-between-class snack is a string cheese or fruit just to hold me over until I get home). I also use this as a time to print any papers or anything that I will need for my next class. You can also use your gaps to study for a bit, especially if you’re on your way to a quiz. Maybe grab some coffee, find a seat, and enjoy the scenery on campus! And no, evening classes won’t be too big of a weight on your social life. Organizations are understanding of your time constraints, we are here to learn, first and foremost!
Do many freshmans bring food to their dorms? I don't know if I can solely want to rely on dining hall food. I signed up for Highlander 120, but I also want some healthy snacks to eat in the morning/evening
I don’t know how I would’ve survived in my residential hall WITHOUT snacks, and in fact, I can’t think of one person I know who doesn’t have a snack stash in their room! As great as the residential restaurants and Scotty Stores are, they don’t always fit your time schedule. Especially if you have a lot of late night studying, or if you enjoy a midnight snack like me, you’ll be grateful to have some ramen or something handy. It’s also nice to have snacks like granola bars to take to class. You also have a fridge and a microwave included in your room, so feel free to bring whatever food you’d like!
What should I expect on the first day of classes? In other words, what do I bring? Are laptops necessary for every class, or are there still people out there that use pen and paper for note taking? Are we allowed to add and drop classes even after the first day of instruction until the add/drop period ends?
On the first day of class, expect your professor to go over your syllabus with you. While some professors just stick to that, most professors start instruction on the first day. And yes, there still people out there who take handwritten notes! *cough* (me) *cough* AND some professors don’t allow laptops in their classes, but that’s something you’ll go over when reviewing the syllabus. And yes, you can drop classes anytime until the deadline.
When does housing contact you about available apartments? I sent in my housing application mid-May and haven't received any emails.
You should receive your housing assignment by email when it is available. If you want to double check, you can call housing services at (951) 827-6350.
i'm going to be living in the residence halls, do you know if we're allowed to bring one of those tiny portable washer dryers?
I don’t think so, remember the space in residential halls can be very compact, and there are only really room for the necessities if you want to live comfortably. You’re also sharing a room with other people so you have to be conscious of their space as well!
So orientation is coming up and I am a bit confused on when to pay for it? Does it add onto our tuition or do we have to pay when we arrive and attend? Thanks
The registration fee will be billed to your Fall Statement of Account in August. Payment is due September 15, 2017. Any payments not made by September 15 will be given a late fee of $12.50. Visit here for more information.
Hey guys, so I submitted my housing application somewhat late 'cause I thought I could take a train to ucr regularly. How do I know if I'm on the waitlist and how do I know if I'll get it? Thanks(:
You will receive a housing assignment September 1, or you can call (951) 827-6350 for more information.
