A retreat turned out to be a treat. A plan by our daughters and we chose to be a part.

Last week end for Deepavali, also ended up in celebrating our wedding anniversary.

In about an hour +, from the outskirts of Bengaluru, we were in Ramanagara.

It was in this village that the epic Hindi film was shot, based on a real life story of Gabbar Singh a dacoit who lived in the hills of Gwaliyor. We remember Gabbar Singh as enacted by Amjad Khan in the film SHOLAY shot at Ramnagara. Imagine Amitabh's salary was ₹1 lakh and Amjad Khan's ₹ 50000/. and Hemamalini received ₹75000/.

We stayed overnight in a camp, no cell phone signal disturbances, no TV, news papers or rooms with air conditioners. We had tents, at a height, surrounded by silence, occassionally 'disturbed' by peacocks cry, sounding 'may-AWE'. Wake up calls were by different species of birds, signed in with the chirp of breeze whisling through the woods.

We drove about an hour in the early morning looking out how clouds descend on the mountains and the mist forming water globules that were channelised as rivulets that led to the river. On our way through the forest land, deers, monkeys and parrots had just woken up to greet us on the two sides. A row of cows were being led by farmers and one came close, to have her share of banana skin through my car window.

River Cauvery in Karnataka was to brim. We were close to a whirlpool in the river and a few watched, aligators raising their neck to greet the "animal" in us.

Previous evening we had a treck up the hill, surrounding the SHOLAY movie site of huge rocky mountains that carried the smell of Hemamalini's Basanthy and Dharmendra's Veeru. The entire scenario that we watched from atop the hill ended up with limitless colours on the horizon, with the setting Sun.

With ages from 5 years to 75, like the shades that merged in sky, each one was amidst nature. Children picked up from around what they felt was precious to each one of them and Sukaina trying to assess, whose treasure was the best, found it difficult to judge.

Few of the takeaways, were a list of amazing a to z list and included touching silk worms with silk threads kept on sale (silk worms to silk saree is a STORY by itself), sleeping in the hammock hung under the tree, the night's barbeque with the bonfire, the difficult treck up the hillocks, viewing the mountains with binoculars, spending valuable shared time, the music from the guitar and co-inhabitants of nature, the turbulence of the whirlpool of aligators and the list was endless.

Say "yes" to life. We have so much to explore, exchange, expand and to listen to the music from our hearts.

By the time I unpacked haversack, my mind's paint brush was ready to colour my day for storing in the chest of memories.

A lesson I learnt: I was able to WALK and CLIMB UP THE HILL, though I was the last in the group. Because I gained energy by not using Cell Phone, TV and did not read newspapers. I gained energy by being with nature.

To travel is certainly to discover. If I told you that we were off to start the day at an animal sanctuary, followed by a picnic, followed by a spot of local shopping, you might imagine our spending an hour or two with distressed dogs or donkeys, maybe some homeless hedgehogs. Then you’d picture us with a pack of sandwiches, maybe sharing a bag of crisps and some Jammie Dodgers, perhaps on a park bench, or dodging the cow pats in a country field. Then you’d suppose we’d nipped into Sainbury or Tesco on the way home.

But this is my Indian Adventure, so you would be wrong. Our animal sanctuary was Dubare Elephant Camp. This is where elephants who’ve had a long career working transporting logs for the Karnataka Forest Department go to live out their retirement years.

We watched them enjoying their daily bath in the River Cauvery. One elephant needs maybe three young men to bathe them: good tough scrubbing brushes required to give that hard leathery skin a good old scratch.

We were in time for their breakfast. There was a cookhouse where an appetising mixture of jaggery (a dark brown palm sugar), millet and vegetation was boiled up and formed into giant balls of nourishment. Just because they ate it daily didn’t stop them finding it delicious.

That was it really. But we had to set off for our picnic in any case. With some difficulty, we waded through paddy fields, where the young rice plants were an impossibly citric green, vivid and vibrant. And there, at the end of our walk, was the River Cauvery: a perfect scene from a travel documentary: tall palm trees, knotted and intricate tree roots, little islands among the fast-flowing waters.

We were glad to climb into our costumes and plunge into the river – muddy, but otherwise clean. There was quite a current, and I wasn’t strong enough to swim the width of the wide river, so stayed close in to the banks.

And then it was time for our picnic: something special, this. Staff from our host’s residence clanked down the hill with great metal cans yoked over their shoulders: rice; sambal; a wonderful bitter curry made out of some dark green leaf also used to de-worm children; chicken curry; a sour and bitter sticky chutney; curds; and a gorgeous buttered cabbage curry. It truly was a memorable feast.

On our way home, we stopped off at our local town, Madikeri, to do some bits and bobs of shopping – get our photos onto CDs in the days when memory cards didn’t have much capacity, buy sandals, that sort of thing.

Oddly, I took few photos here, but I’ve used others from later in the trip, because with their rows of tiny shops, Indian shopping streets are standard in their own way. No M&S, Boots and Costa certainly, but there’s still a certain uniformity in the small shop fronts with goods stacked and hanging outside, and pedestrians, bullocks and auto rickshaws all jockeying for position in the crowded streets. Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Dec 6 (ANI): Karnataka Water Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday called for finding an amicable solution to the long pending Cauvery water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu. "The Government of Karnataka desires to have an amicable solution to the issue of Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir-cum-Drinking Water project," Shivakumar stated in the letter written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami. "You (TN Chief Minister) are aware that the river Cauvery is the lifeline of both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and is very sacred for the people of both the states. Governments and people of both the states desire to have a permanent solution on the issues pertaining to Cauvery. In this regard, I wish to bring to your notice that the Government of Karnataka desires to have an amicable solution to the issue of the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir-cum-Drinking Water project," he stated in the letter. In his letter, the 56-year-old Karnataka Water Minister further stated, "This project will also help in regulating the releases in such a judicious manner that the excess water during good monsoon is not allowed to flow from the Mettur dam into the sea unnecessarily as has happened during the current year." "It appears that some misconceptions about the proposed project have occurred in the minds of the Government of people of Tamil Nadu, though the actual reality of the project is different," the letter reads. Shivakumar urged Tamil Nadu to present the project details of the Cauvery river water and also hold a discussion on the same at a convenient time. This water dispute dates back to the 1970s and has its origin in two agreements signed between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and the Princely State of Mysore in 1892 and 1924 in which it was decided to divide the river water between the two states, which lapsed in 1974. Tamil Nadu then asked the Congress-ruled government at the Centre to form a tribunal to look into the diversion of water and ensure that it gets its due share. When the Centre did not pay heed to Tamil Nadu's demand, it approached the Supreme Court, which, in May 1990, ordered the creation of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. In its later order, the apex court had pronounced that Karnataka is given an additional 14.75 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of the river water while 177.25 TMC of water be released for Tamil Nadu. The allocation of Karnataka which used to be 270 TMC has been increased to 284.75 TMC. (ANI)
