MainStreet Oceanside Announces Return of ‘Hometown Heroes’ Theme for Oceanside Independence Parade

Oceanside CA— On Saturday, June 29, 2019, the Annual Oceanside Independence Parade will honor local leaders and community members with the returning theme of “Hometown Heroes.” The parade will start at 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Coast Highway and Wisconsin Avenue and travel north on Coast Highway to Civic Center Drive. More than 100 parade entries are expected to march, roll, walk and drive down Historic Highway 101.
“The theme ‘Hometown Heroes’ is a great way to recognize individuals who have given back to our great city,” said Cathy Nykiel, Parade Committee chair for MainStreet Oceanside, the organizer of the parade. “We hope to see everyone in their best patriotic attire, waving their American flags and paying tribute to our nation’s birthday with all of our local businesses and community leaders and partners that make Oceanside a great place to live.”
Larry Hatter, Oceanside High Class of 1962 and OHS Hall of Fame Inductee to be honored in Oceanside Independence Parade.
Three Hometown Heroes will be recognized during this year’s Oceanside Independence Parade: Colleen O’Harra, former Oceanside City Council member and co-founder of the Women’s Resource Center; Larry Hatter, chair, board member and volunteer of numerous community organizations; and Max Disposti, executive director of the North County LGBTQ Resource Center.

Dia de los Muertos – Largest Festival in San Diego 2017 Dia de los Muertos FestivalOctober 29, 2017 from 10am to 4pm http://mslrdiadelosmuertos.com  www.sanluisrey.org Community organizers and organizations come together to keep the Dia de los Muertos Festival in Oceanside.  Spearheaded by many and headed by Cathy Nykiel, Dave Mears of Legendary Event Management and Chema and Manuel Navarro of Por Siempre Car Club, the festival will continue this tradition in Oceanside at the Old Mission San Luis Rey again for its 16th celebratory year.            This year, the festival will continue with its many community partners to continue the largest attended Dia de los Muertos Festival again at Old Mission San Luis Rey.  This vibrant event will showcase over 25 altars, traditional dancers, Classic Car Show, a shopping Mercado, amongst the serenity of the King of the Mission’s grounds. Oceanside CA—Three Hometown Heroes will be recognized during this year’s Oceanside Independence Parade: the grand marshal, who will be former Mayor Jim Wood (OHS Class of 1966),  the superintendent of the Oceanside Unified School District, Duane Coleman (OHS Class of 1979); and the manager of the City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation Division, Eileen Turk. Dr. Coleman and  Mrs. Turk have announced their retirement plans for this year.

On Saturday, June 30, 2018, the 24th Annual Oceanside Independence Parade will start at 10 a.m. at the intersection of North Coast Highway and Wisconsin Avenue and travel north on Coast Highway to Civic Center Drive. More than 100 parade entries are expected to march, roll, walk and drive down historic Highway 101., including the OHS Pirate Marching Band.
