thinking about Henry’s overwhelming (to my feelings) but still deeply restrained and gentle kindness to Catherine after he has to tell her to stop making up stories about his mom’s death.

#Austen is SO clear about it #there is a line that goes something like:#his behavior to her [ after the scene ] was no different than any previous evening except rather more gentle #and it makes me want to die #Catherine is resilient with the true resilience of not over-precious youth #it is not in her temperament to brood forever #but she is in utter ANGUISH at her mistake. just totally devastated and in shock at the newness of it #and he just walks her through it. and it’s never condescending. it comes from a deep place of love and respect #as the (necessary) wound-dealer he felt some of the grief of her wound #anyway yeah Emma’s right. the JJ Feild northanger adaptation completely skips this #northanger abbey #jane austen
