Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 15JAN2024
Heading down through some of the glades below Gotham City today during my tour on the Bolton Nordic and Backcountry Network In this morning’s update, Bolton Valley  was reporting an additional 3-5” of snow from yesterday’s lake-effect snow and snow squalls. The other recent snowfall numbers they had in their report looked solid, with 12” in the last two days, 27″ since Tuesday night and more than…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 05FEB2023
The quality of the powder out on the mountain today was excellent – even south-facing Alchemist had soft, fluffy conditions. I hadn’t been out for any turns since last Sunday when I toured in the Nebraska Valley, so I was eager to see what the mountains had to offer yesterday once the arctic cold departed.  At the end of my tour last weekend, temperatures had risen above freezing in the lower…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 19FEB2024
Leaving some tracks in the powder while dropping down out terrain near the Devil’s Drop area on today’s backcountry ski tour I was too busy to get out for turns yesterday, but I had some time this afternoon and was able to head up to Bolton. Thanks to the arctic front that came through overnight, they picked up another 4-6” of snow, bringing their recent totals to 16” in the last 48 hours and 36”…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 17FEB2024
Today’s ski tour covered almost 10 miles and brought us through Bolton’s Moose Glen area where we were treated to 18 inches of fresh champagne powder. With the off piste conditions being so much better than what’s available on the trails right now, Ty and I had plans to take a ski tour up to Stowe View today and hit some of the Moose Glen terrain at Bolton Valley. I was just up there a couple of…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 20JAN2024
Passing by Caribou’s Corner on my ski tour today in the Beaver Pond area of Bolton Valley’s Nordic and Backcountry Network Since today’s forecast was in the single digits F, and there was the possibility of wind as well, ski touring seemed like the natural choice vs. riding the lifts. In addition, our current weather system, while certainly enough to freshen up surfaces, isn’t expected to be…

Gilpin Mountain, VT 18FEB2001
Jay enjoying some powder during today’s ski tour on Gilpin Mountain after Jay Peak recently received 2 1/2 feet of new snow For years I’ve driven along Route 242 to get to Jay Peak, often remarking about the intriguing ski terrain that dropped to the road from both sides. This was always on the way to ski the resort of course, and thoughts of exploring those backcountry goodies had to wait. Since…

Nebraska Valley, VT 29JAN2023
Some of today’s snowfall as I enjoy the views on my trip through the Nebraska Valley up to the Catamount Trail With the strong snowpack in the area now, I decided to head out to the Nebraska Valley for some ski touring today.  The last time I toured in the Nebraska Valley I was on the valley’s north side, but I’ve now heard from multiple students of mine that the south side of the valley offers…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 20DEC2022
Ty out in some of Bolton’s Backcountry Network glades today enjoying the powder from Winter Storm Diaz and the additional rounds since then It’s continued to snow over the past couple of days, and we’ve had another 3 to 4 inches of snow down here at the house that’s come in with an average density of around 4% H2O.  The back end of Winter Storm Diaz had already topped off the snowpack with some…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 14FEB2021
A view of some of the snow up by the Buchanan Shelter near the start of our descent on today’s ski tour. Yesterday I toured in the Beaver Pond area of the Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry Network, and the powder I found was so exquisitely good, that I had to get E out there for some turns as well.  The boys were both working during the middle of the day today, so we headed up during that window…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 13FEB2021
Views along today’s ski tour – a bucket loader covered with snow shows the various layers in the snowpack that have accumulated from recent storms. Today was expected to be fairly chilly, with temperatures topping out in the teens F, and without any fresh snow in a couple of days, backcountry touring seemed to be the call. I was looking for something new to explore, so I planned a tour in the…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 22JAN2022
Dylan surfing some powder near the Bolton Lodge during today’s backcountry tour Today is Ty’s birthday, and the whole family was around with time to do something together.  Ty’s broken collarbone has healed to the point where he doesn’t have to wear a sling, and light activities that don’t put stress on it are fine.  On Sunday, Ty and E and I went for a snowshoe tour on the Bolton Valley Nordic &…

Bolton Valley Nordic & Backcountry, VT 13MAR2018
Stephen enjoying some of the great snow out there in the Bolton Valley backcountry today Today was a big ski day for Stephen.  He’s been working hard, for what seems like years, to put together an appropriate alpine touring setup for backcountry skiing at a reasonable price.  Over the past few months, the final pieces have finally been coming together.  Despite his son Johannes “stealing”…
