NYCC 2014 Day 3

I was still doing the re-reading Batwoman thing and trying to defend the book while it was on a downswing. I got confused for Batgirl frequently. I think this was around the time the Bombshells started coming out. I think I’ve seen more people cosplay that version of Batwoman. I expect since the TV show is coming out that will change.

Image Comics has been the publisher I’ve read the most for several years. I went to several of their panels that year. Towards the end of the convention I found the moderator of more than one at the Image booth towards the end of the Con and congratulated him on doing a good job.

I swear, I didn’t remember I wrote this down when I wrote about it in a previous post. I would like to say that a thing Saga and Game of Thrones have in common is that  both have sprawling ensembles whose characters you enjoy on their own only to be shocked by how painful and violent things get when they actually meet. They’re both also anti-war stories set in war times, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say Saga does a better job in not glamorizing the war.

I’m a huge Sex Criminals fan. I have two shirts related to the series, a Sexual Gary one (which you may have noticed I was wearing in the selfies) and more recently a “DON’T WORRY BE WORRY” one that I wore to the first day of Book Con this year specifically to impress Kelly Sue DeConnick. (It worked.)

I only read the first issue of Deadly Class. I had recently read the first trade paperback of writer Rick Remender’s Black Science and hated it.  I thought it was needlessly mean, doing things like killing off a character in the first issue only to have her show up in flashback a few issues later all excited about the mission that already killed her. (There was also something degrading about a dancing humanoid female amphibian.) Nothing in that first issue of Deadly Class made me feel like “this might be better.” I’m just really excited to learn about artists’ models.

Right now that everyone seems underwhelmed by Hawkeye’s role in the MCU, it may be hard to understand, but the Matt Fraction penned Hawkeye series was very hot at the time. It had very little to do with the film version of the character. It was a fairly low key tale of the least powerful Avenger being a mentor and a good neighbor in some trying circumstances. I have a shirt based on this run too.

Part of the regular response is that Vaughan wanted The Will to be a Jason Stathem type. Vaughan also jokes about this being an “all white bald men look the same” describing himself as confusable with fellow comic scribes Grant Morrison and Brian Michael Bendis. I actually agree that he and Morrison do look very similar.

Now I’m wondering how much this inspired the flash forward in which The Will is drug-addled and has gained a lot of weight.

This came up with the example of someone on YouTube reading out loud a then recent issue of Thor to point out how bad the dialogue sounded. I wonder if this caused a controversy that I missed.

So this is the point where I have to write about having a pleasant encounter with someone at NYCC and then finding out about that they’re awful. Shortly after this convention in which Upchurch told charming stories about the difficulties of working from home with small children, he got arrested for domestic violence. He served his sentence, had the crime removed from his record, but was still let go from Rat Queens. (His wife claims the abuse was worse than in the police report and that after completing his sentence he abandoned her and the children, both physically and fiscally.) Stjepan Šejić finished out the arc they we’re working on and Tess Fowler became the series artist. She was fired after one five issue arc and a spin off special. At the time she was let go, she was under the impression that she was going to be replaced by Upchurch. That didn’t end up happening, but the whole thing was pretty devastating. I gave up on Rat Queens, but I still follow Fowler and Šejić. Upchurch recently announced a new series. I won’t be reading that.

I didn’t remember writing this as a tweet when I wrote about this in the previous entry. It’s a sign that one remembers things better if you write about them, even if you don’t remember writing about them.

I really do feel like my autograph hounding has led me to being in a rut while attending conventions.

Let’s talk about Dare2Draw. I’ve spent a lot of time with them, though not recently. It’s an organization that promotes people interested in cartooning and drawing for comics. For a while they would have monthly meetings which consisted of an opportunity to draw cosplaying models doing quick poses, a competition involving how to draw some high concept that you associate with comics. (There was a Godzilla inspired one the first time I went, some other time there was what your pet does when you’re not around. Then there’d be types of gods or villains. It’s a very demanding contest.) There’d be a lecture by a guest artist, examples of whom include Cliff Chiang, Bill Plymton and Russ Braun. There wasn’t a lecture part, just the competition. The category was creating heroic types. I had no idea what to do, did a variation of Casper David Friedrich “Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog.” I didn’t place, all three of the people who did were women and had much better, more dynamic drawings then I did. I only ever placed, once. I actually won that time. I haven’t been back. I miss it, even the constant losing.

I would have liked to have met Marc Andreyko. I really wanted to publicly support his Batwoman run. It is as much about me being a contrarian as about me being nice. I also like him as a Twitter follower.

I missed a birthday party for my cousin’s son. I don’t remember anything else that I missed. Maybe a semi-regular baby sitting gig?

After studying Environmental Science and Politics at NYU, she started a blog called Trash Is For Tossers to make a zero-waste lifestyle more accessible and comprehensible to everyone. But there’s still an issue. Even with a steep rise in sustainable CPG products, these brands rarely have the scale to compete with traditional CPG products in price, and lack the distribution to be accessible to everyone.

That’s where Package Free comes into play. Today, Package Free is announcing that it has raised its very first capital since launch in 2017, with a fresh $4.5 million in seed funding led by Primary Ventures. Scooter Braun’s TQ Ventures, Day One Ventures, Ryan Engel of Peleton, Brooke Wall of The Wall Group, and Casper founder Neil Parikh also participated in the round, alongside others.

Package Free started as a little pop-up shop for sustainable CPG brands to show off their wares in a brick-and-mortar environment. The brands themselves paid between $1000 and $3000 to participate, and were given 100 percent of the profit from the pop-up.

By the end of month one, says Singer, every brand had been paid back for their investment. By the end of month three, Package Free had become the primary revenue driver for those brands. At that point, they switched over to a traditional retail model to generate revenue to launch an ecommerce site.

Today, Package Free is a full-fledged reseller. The pop-up shop now has a permanent status in the trendy neighborhood of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, with its own warehouse in Greenpoint. The company buys their inventory wholesale and enforces incredibly strict guidelines for the vendors they work with, not least of which is a no-exceptions no-plastic policy.

Brands that sell through Package Free not only have to use all natural ingredients and be plastic-free, but must also ship to the Package Free warehouse without using any plastic. The company actually charges vendors a percentage of the shipment if the shipment arrives with plastic, and increases that percentage on the second infraction. Three strikes, and that vendor is out for good.

“We know it’s completely possible to do these things without plastic, it’s just not the norm now,” said Singer. “So we’re trying to change the foundational benchmarks of what it means to package sustainably. I truly believe that the burden of waste should never fall on the consumer. It should fall on the manufacturer first, and then the reseller.”

Once products are at the warehouse, Package Free reuses the dunnage (packaging materials) that the original shipment came with, meaning the company never uses ‘virgin dunnage’. The boxes that Package Free ships to consumers are 100 percent recycled, and shipping labels are also 100 percent recyclable. In fact, every Package Free box is printed with the words “I’m not trash” with further facts about trash.

With the funding, Package Free wants to expand to creating its own sustainable CPG products, first tackling the ‘white space’ of products that aren’t currently available via vendor partners. Singer declined to share any more details around what Package Free’s first products might be.

Zeit, da auch wirklich mal hinzugehen. So wie, unter anderem, Brettschneider selbst und viele andere Menschen aus der Stuttgarter Popszene. Das Theater Rampe, wo die Reihe seit jeher stattfindet, ist längst eine zentrale Anlaufstelle für die Musiker und ihr Umfeld, und das erfreulicherweise betont genreübergreifend.

An diesem Samstagabend haben die Konzeptverantwortlichen Andreas Vogel, Max Braun und Aliki Schäfer im fünften Singles-Club-Jahr erstmals einen HipHop-Act gebucht: Dexter, Kinderarzt und Beatproduzent für unter anderem Cro und Casper und seit seinem Album "Haare nice Socken fly" auch wieder Rapper. Ein Tausendsassa, der aber auch bestens ins Singles-Club-Konzept passt: Dexters Tracks atmen nicht nur klassisch funk- und soulinformierte Rapbeats, sondern da steckt immer auch Jazz drin oder Experimentelles. Und: an diesem Abend wird das Ganze mit der Liveband Tribes of Jizu performt.

Das kann man aus der Musik heraushören, oder man lässt es sich im Interview erzählen - der Backstage-Besuch samt Plauderei über die Musik des Künstlers ist fester Teil des Singles-Club-Konzepts, live übertragen auf die Wand hinter der Theaterbühne. Dann noch drei, vier etwas alberne, von den Singles-Club-Machern produzierte Werbeclips, und schon geht es los.

Die Band füllt fast die komplette Bühne aus und schnell fühlt man sich an die ersten Stuttgarter Abende dieser Art erinnert. Damals in den Neunzigern brachten Freundeskreis und die Fantastischen Vier HipHop-Gigs im Konzertformat auf die Bühnen und öffneten das Genre auch klanglich. An diese Tradition knüpfen Dexter und die Tribes of Jizu an.

Den Tracks tut das gut: Sie dürfen musikalisch atmen, immer wieder ist Zeit für ein jazziges Solo oder improvisierte Parts - die Tribes of Jizu könnten problemlos auch im Jazzclub Kiste auftreten. Das passt wunderbar zu Dexters erstaunlich smoothem Mix von klassischem Stuttgart-Rap à la Massive Töne mit den aktuellen, hingeworfenen Trap-Halbsätzen. Auch bei dieser Interpretation hilft das vorab gesehene Interview mit dem Rapper und Produzenten.

So fließt der Abend dahin. Er wird kein Abriss, sondern ein überaus musikalisches HipHop-Konzert mit herrlich gemischtem Publikum und sehr konzentrierten Musikern. Normalerweise hört man im Singles Club etwas ruhigere Klänge, aber diesen Geist atmet auch das Dexter-Konzert. Als das Saallicht angeht, stellen sich alle brav für ihre Vinyl-Single an. Im Internet soll es die beiden darauf enthaltenen Songs nicht zu hören geben. Es ist wie eine Lektion der gereiften Singles-Club-Macher gerade für die vielen jungen Konzertbesucher: Manche Sachen gibt es nur im echten Leben, man muss sich da selbst hinbewegen. Im Theater Rampe bereut man das eigentlich nie.

Here’s why Casper’s disappointing IPO might spell catastrophe for other unicorns

Casper’s IPO could spell bad news for other start-ups looking to go public this year.

Casper was likely hurt by the truth that it’s losing significant quantities of cash and that it attempted to represent itself as a tech company when it really wasn’t one, company experts informed Service Expert.

Start-ups that are losing money or do not have genuine claims to being tech companies could see comparable pushback if they attempt to go IPO anytime quickly, they stated.

Casper’s initial public offering may well provide problems to the backers of other start-ups that are wishing to go public this year.

A year ago, the endeavor backers of the online bed mattress business valued it at $1.1 billion. However in the IPO, public financiers said Casper wasn’t even worth half that amount. Maybe worse, the offering yielded far less cash for Casper than it at first hoped for– an essential factor to consider for a business that’s been rapidly burning through its stash.

The business’s frustrating IPO should worry other unicorns– venture-backed startups with assessments of $1 billion or more– organisation and financial experts informed Service Expert. Even before it went public on Wednesday, Casper suggested that it anticipated public investors to be more skeptical of its value than its venture backers were. It at first said that it prepared to provide is shares at in between $17 and $19 a share. That would have provided it a market capitalization of less than $800 million, a considerable discount rate from its valuation last February, when it completed its last endeavor funding round.
