Parked next to a Diablo and a Countach, chances are good this car will get the least attention of the trio of #Lamborghinis on the @catsexotics stand at the #SeattleAutoShow this weekend. But the very rare Lamborghini Islero S is exactly the kind of car Ferrucio Lamborghini originally set out to make. In fact, it’s almost exactly that car because the #Islero, named for a brutal Miura Bull, was a continuation of the original 350GT/400GT. - As such, the Islero’s story really starts with the 400GT, itself a lightly updated version of the original 350GT packing a more powerful version of the Giotto Bizzarini-designed #Lamborghini V12 and, later, sporting styling changes and a tiny 2+2 back seat. By the time of the 400GT, the Miura had arrived - relegating the original Lamborghini Gran Turismos niche products for a well-heeled few. The 400GT was very fast but also easy to use and live with - but the Miura changed exotic cars forever. - At the same time, Carrozzeria Touring, which built the 350GT and 400GT bodies, collapsed financially in 1966 - resulting in 400GT production being transferred to tiny #CarrozzeriaMarazzi outside of Milan - founded by ex-Touring and Zagato man Carlo Marazzi, who brought on many Touring craftsmen. The 400 was updated by Marazzi into the Islero for 1968 - featuring sharper, cleaner lines and a more contemporary look. But the Islero was the strong silent type compared with the Miura. - The Islero was launched on the same day as the Marcello Gandini-penned Espada from Bertone, at the 1968 Geneva show. The Espada quickly stole the limelight. Early quality control and panel fit issues on the Islero didn’t do it any favors, either. Neverheless, #FerruccioLamborghini himself drove one - and liked Marazzi’s style. Just 125 Isleros were made in 1968 and early 1969, before it was updated into the ultimate version of the original Lambo - the Islero S. - The S featured a power bump to 350hp (and a top speed of 161 mph) as well as minor cosmetic changes (like a hood scoop for ventilating the interior) - just 100 were made before the Islero faded away at the end of 1969, replaced by the more modern Espada-based, Gandini-styled Jarama.
