Finally got the opportunity to pop in TLOU on my PS4 and it’s like yeeeeesssss
In comparison to the HBO show, this is just like, 10000% better
Like the only thing I can think that the show did better is honestly Bill’s episode, BUT I still love Bill’s town in the game, because Bill and Ellie interacting is just amazing. And it’s bittersweet that we only get that hint about him and Frank, but damn the episode for them was just flawless TV right there
I’m already so excited to progress thru the game, cuz I’ve already lit up with the interactions between Joel and Tess, it’s like !!!
It’s like, whyyyyyyy didn’t they go more action in the show, too? Like the story bits they hit the main parts of, but the action goes hand in hand with story in the game, so you understand while going thru the story how scary and violent the world is. But you don’t get that same kind of fear in the show, cuz honestly you only see the infected only a couple of times, so it’s not quite the same. Like yeah, while going thru the story, you find out that it’s the humans who are ALSO scary, but the show seemed to focus more on that than the actual monsters in this universe
TBH some of the scenes where it’s word for word from the game fell flat too. I think the Left Behind bits were done pretty well (only pretty, not perfect lol) but a lot of the scenes that were exactly from the game just did not hit the same way. I think the ending was big for that too, it just did not hit the same way. The “you’re not my daughter” scene didn’t either, even the scene after David’s death where Joel goes “baby girl” for the first time, everything felt slightly off and also VERY FUCKING FAST the entire way thru
Couldn’t they have thrown a few more episodes into this season or something??? Like, why you rushing so much, huh?? This could have been better even a couple episodes longer where some bits didn’t seem so fast. Dedicating an entire episode to Jackson, okay cool, we didn’t get a lot of that in the first game, only the second, so that was neat, but then putting University at the end of that same episode, so then it’s like WHOOPS JOEL GOT SHANKED ROLL CREDITS WAIT TILL NEXT WEEK
So yeah, the show was a moderately fun ride (MINUS THE END OF EPISODE TWO) but the game is the definitive way to experience The Last of Us

tlou hbo s1 ep9 thoughts (w spoilers)
really did love the scene we got with anna i’m just upset that we didn’t get more!! it’s so symbolic to have ashley play ellie’s mother and that moment felt cheapened by the fact that we still know so little about her. why not get to know her, watch her life and how the outbreak impacted her, see more of her relationship w marlene so that when the moment comes where she has to die we know just how much that hurts! there is so much more they could’ve done and i’m mad that they chose to rush through it
okay i’ll stop the rant and talk about what i liked about it now. really loved how much of that classic ellie attitude shines through in anna’s lines, the spunk was inherited i guess. and i really love that you can tell just how much love ashley poured into anna and therefore anna pours into ellie, she is so careful with her and insistent with marlene about taking care of her. ellie was so so loved from the beginning and it is so evident in everything anna does
especially loved how insistent anna was about telling marlene she cut cord before she was bit. it was a flat out lie but she was so intense about it that i almost believed her for a sec despite having just watched the scene. she is so strongly protective of ellie
joel’s goofy dad side really came out this episode every little moment is just him trying to get a smile out of ellie. the line with the dynamite really cracked me up he’s tryin so hard
watching ellie drop the ladder i was sitting there screaming at joel like GET OUT THE WAY ur about to get conked by a ladder!!! lol
giraffe scene my beloved ❤️ that’s all i just love it
“i’ll follow you anywhere you go” thanks i’m but a broken shell of a human!! and when we get dina’s ‘you go i go’ parallel next season i may actually pass away
joel’s admission about trying to kill himself,, it surprised me at first but hoo boy that hit. i like that it almost felt as if he HAD to tell ellie, like it clawed it’s way out of him. it’s his time to finally admit out loud how much losing sarah hurt, but also how much ellie means to him. and seeing them letting themselves be so vulnerable with each other made my heart ache
we got the apocalypse joke so actually this is the best show ever it did nothing wrong
UGH joel storming the hospital while a deep slow orchestral version of the theme plays fUCK ME UPPP gustavo always delivers
laura bailey as one of the nurses 👀 i’m wondering if they’re gonna have her play a bigger character in s2 and give her some connection to abby
i am a bit sad that they didn’t have the whole chase sequence with joel carrying ellie out of the hospital. i get that it probably works better in the game but idk i think they could’ve gotten it to work. that scene is just so loaded bc it’s like you have her and you’re almost there and the tension and fear is so high that when you escape all you feel is relief and happiness that you saved ellie. would’ve liked to have seen that translated into the show
the extra little bits of joel’s lie were fun, especially when ellie asks if marlene was okay. i almost feel like in the game ellie could sort of write off the lie easier bc it was a generalized thing? but since joel adds the extra details here and specifically sort of half lies about marlene for some reason to me it feels even more painful. idk did a bad job of explaining that but yeah i really liked the additions
i know i’ve complained about how they’ve been using pt2’s score for this first season so much but playing ‘unbroken’ after joel lies to ellie is like smart but also so mean. like i’m already dead on the ground you didn’t have to drive the knife deeper
“i’m not saying that you’re not girly-“ “i’m not” i fuckin love ellie so much. gonna get serious for a sec but ellie being super masc is one of the reasons i fell in love with her when i first played the game bc i felt so seen by it and idk just hearing it addressed so directly just made me happy
also loved the fact that joel basically called ellie short. bella said short king rights ig
also also i just loved that whole sequence in general, joel just wants to make sure that ellie knows that she’s not some replacement or that joel doesn’t view her as sarah but as her own person and he’s a dork about it but it was so heartfelt
okay so. i’m not happy that they confirmed ellie kills riley tbh. i was never a fan of that idea in general bc it didn’t feel right to me. and even despite my own personal opinions about how i think ellie leaves riley i think there’s something to be said about having ambiguity around it. leaving it open let’s people form their own thoughts and feelings about it, it engages them and makes the story feel more personal, so confirming what actually happens just feels cheap to me.
the other thing is too, i knew they were gonna confirm it as soon as marlene kills anna bc they were setting it up to be such an explicit parallel. they could’ve still left riley’s fate open ended in that final convo and people would’ve come to the same conclusion bc of the setup beforehand, but at least this time there’s like active engagement and analysis happening with the audience. i just don’t think there was a need to actually have it explicitly confirmed. idk i just did not like it at all.
overall tho i’m glad the ending stuck so close to the original. i liked the changes they made to joel’s dialogue in the final scene, it was like a little surprise
so anyways kinda can’t believe this show is real tbh like wow they really took my favorite game and turned it into a show. and obviously i have some complaints about it but overall it was still super good?? this is a thing that happened??? wack. it’s gonna take a bit for it to sink in that it’s over for now. i’m excited for season 2 tho, bella ramsey is a goddamn power house and they’re gonna fuckin crush part 2’s story

it’s been like twenty four hours and I am still very disgruntled by episode two of tlou hbo omg (warning, complaining an spoilers under the cut)
like why did they have to basically have clickers kiss people
like I am so worried for the rest of the series, I am so afraid they’re gonna continue doing more little weird changes that aren’t just justified changes
cuz I was fine with the first episode, the most egregious thing was the plane crash bit but that was QUICK and inconsequential
but the tendrils and stuff, like it’s just such a big change that the implications are so mystifying. Like are infected gonna sense the bit of infection in Ellie like it’s a spider sense and hunt her out? Since they are all ~*connected*~ and shit?? And they can ~*sense*~ the infection in Tess and just had to fully infect her??
I’m just so peeved omg it’s maddening that more people aren’t weirded out and I keep on seeing people praise the change and it makes me feel like I’m going crazy and just an asshole
Me thinking a straight adaptation of the game by HBO, by the guy who helmed Chernobyl, and I thought it would be a slam dunk. But then they TWEAKED core elements about the infected that just throw things off JUST enough. There was nothing wrong with it being spores omg
Still, I’m hoping that there are no other curve balls that derail shit further. I’m optimistic that Bill will be done very well, and they’ll flesh out his relationship with Frank in a very believable way
I’m still the longtime fan of this series, from fucking 2013, but shit, this hurts. At least I got my long time favorite six hour movie cut of the game on YouTube to soothe my soul
PS so the writers trying to explain things like “what if they’re only violently trying to infect people cuz people struggle, what if you didn’t struggle, this shows that” is JUST esoteric enough that if they wanted to actually mean that, they should have hinted to it. That is too big of a weird thing to introduce in episode TWO, especially without some sort of hint that it’s a viable option vs just blindly fighting back. If they had built up a bit more that it was a tactic, then MAYBE it wouldn’t seem so jarring, but this is so left field it’s not even in the same ballpark. If they set up their weird implications, then maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. If they wanted to do this, it shouldn’t have happened to a core member of the initial cast, and it shouldn’t have happened in episode two during some of the first interactions with the infected
okay I HAVE to stop complaining omg I’m gonna go play p3p

okay okay okay so watched episode 2 of tlou hbo (spoilers)
I am not crazy about these new mechanics with the infected, like the web of fungus and the tendrils, its super fucking weird and not JUST cuz it was not in the game, but it’s like, I don’t want the show to look like stranger things 4 with all this bullshit they can’t step on and all. I am just not crazy about that
I think it is a bit them trying to make things more cinematic and also this is this series now living in a post actual pandemic world, where most people on some level understand airborne particles, understand how covid spreads, so it is kind of knee jerk to try to make it more believable in today’s world. Which yeah I get but.... ugh it seems so weird
And most of all........ the infected kissed Tess, like that was not just the weird tendrils going into her mouth, that was like a KISS and it’s like nah man, nah. It was intentionally like a kiss which is gross, but also it just makes me mad that that’s how we get to remember Tess. Her in the game where you just see her steel herself, take a deep breath, and then turn around to die in a flash of gunfire, it says way more without showing stuff we don’t need to see. Even just her fumbling with the lighter, that would be better. But like, what happened to people getting fucking BIT, not making out with clickers. GET BIT.
And kudos to them for these opening scenes that show more backstory of how things went down, but also, I honestly would like that time just for more of the main story ;;;; it’s like, I would have easily given up that time for a little bit more time to show us Tess, especially cuz that opening scene really only explained how it spreads a bit, and the fact that places were bombed to try to contain the infection, both of which could have been explained by Tess and Joel while walking thru Boston..… you know, like how it was in the game omg. I AM TRYING SO HARD NOT TO BE THAT ASSHOLE BUT ALSO. I AM THAT ASSHOLE WHO IS LIKE WELL. THE GAME THO.
This show is def intriguing and I am liking the actual characters of it, but some of the random world things I am just not entirely liking. I liked Joel, Tess and Ellie’s interactions in this episode, and then seeing Bill in the next episode teaser I am like BILL YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE SAVE THIS SHOW cuz I am so fucking excited to see him and Frank, even though they may play him too funny but I hope that’s just pre-Frank dying Bill and we more saw post-Frank dying Bill where he’s a thousand percent more of an asshole
Ugh I did not want to feel this conflicted with this show omg I thought it was gonna be a big slam dunk of me loving it but watching it only makes me realize just how fucking special and perfect the game is
