Ace representation gives me weird feelings.
This was originally posted on pillowfort, and is being reposted here for the September 2019 Carnival of Aces.
To be 100% clear: I AM ACE. (And aro, and the concept of gender gives me approximately the same feelings as the concept of being covered in live spiders, which I will grudgingly/squeamishly refer to as being agender or nonbinary when a label is required.) Relevantly: ace.*
I began to identify as ace when I first heard the word, and had an "oh" moment. (Or rather, multiple simultaneous "oh" moments. "Oh that's a thing" and "oh maybe my classmates aren't all just faking relationships to mimic TV" are the two I remember most clearly.) It was July, and at the time I was fifteen; I'm currently 28, so that's a bit over 13 years. I'll skip the full journey, but the point is, this is an identity that I've had for a while and am comfortable with.
Despite that, ace characters in fiction give me weird feelings. I mostly end up metaphorically staring at fiction which I know contains ace characters, going "hrmmmm I can't parse exactly what feeling I'm having, but I'm not enjoying it," to the point where I sometimes end up avoiding them entirely. I doubt I'll be able to analyze all of why, but I'd like to at least try to start.
I'm also not referring to bad representation, or even to representation that focuses heavily on angst/suffering/prejudice. Several years ago I read a large chunk of Shades of A (which, for anyone unfamiliar and about to click that link, includes a lot of kink and general adult themes; since it's been years I can't recall exactly what's in it) which was, from what I recall, very well done, and then I hit a point where I just... couldn't make myself keep going. More recently I've heard several times about Every Heart a Doorway and thought 'that appeals to literally everything I want in fiction that I can think of' and then... not read it.
On the other hand, if a character is called asexual or characterized in a way that I can easily interpret as their being asexual, but it's not a major focus of the story or descriptions/advertisements/reviews thereof, I don't have the same reaction. So for the rest of this post I'm just going to be discussing the former category (fiction with asexual representation that does give me weird feelings), and not addressing works that have an asexual or easily-read-as-asexual characters without giving me the weird feelings about it. (The only real explanation I have for why a work falls in one category or another is the 'is it a major focus' question, so I don't think I can get anything useful out comparing them.)
Some of this, I'm sure, is that I'm just generally low on energy; I'm not reading much of anything that isn't fanfic right now. But I tend to avoid fanfic tagged or described as having an asexual character too, so it's not just that.
The most obvious source is just that ace characters are unfamiliar. There are a handful around now, even in mainstream media, but that wasn't true until I was in my 20s. (Unless, of course, you counted the monsters/aliens/serial killers, and even then it was only the monsters/aliens/serial killers that the creator wanted to emphasize were really, really inhuman, even more than your typical monster/alien/serial killer. And I was never fond of horror anyway.) So ace characters stand out to me in a way that straight characters (and gay or lesbian ones, thanks largely to the Valdemar series) don't. That extra attention-catching element can in itself make the representation feel weird and off on a level that's often subconscious and therefore difficult to dissect. Again, though, while I think this is likely to be an element, I don't think it's the only reason.
I think some of it is the expectation—mine, but absorbed from a more general one—that if an asexual character is present, that should be the character that I most strongly (or even exclusively) identify with and connect to. But that's often difficult: Anwar from Shades of A, for example, I have prettymuch nothing in common with except for being ace, our general age range, and maaaybe some of the social awkwardness and tendency toward geekiness that 98.5% of characters on the internet have. I spent a lot of the time I was trying to read the comic being frustrated at every significant decision Anwar made because, while I probably would not have made better decisions, I certainly would have made different ones, and couldn't bring myself to empathize with his reasoning or priorities in any but one minor aspect.
And again, it's not that he's a bad character, it's just that he and I have nothing in common. But I felt like I ought to empathize with him—I'm pretty sure he was the first ace character I ever encountered, so obviously I should empathize with him strongly and immediately and easily, right? Not even "I should be able to," just I should, like saying the sun should rise in the morning, it's expected to just happen. And because of that I couldn't pick another character to identify with (JD is nonbinary! Chris and I have the same hair color! From what I remember they both have a more similar personality to me than Anwar does!) and I also couldn't just let myself gradually develop an understanding of Anwar's thought processes and start empathizing with him over time, because I was supposed to identify with him yesterday. (Or rather, at least five years ago.)
(To be clear: none of this is something I was thinking consciously at the time, I was just frustrated with Anwar's decisions and didn't really analyze it further until like, two hours ago. But from my current perspective, I think this is what was going on.)
Since I haven't actually read Every Heart a Doorway I of course can't be sure the same thing would happen, but I think I've avoided it because I expect it to. From the summary it sounds like the main character is maybe fifteen or so, and the majority if not all major characters are mid-to-late teens? So I'd be reading the book more as an observer than projecting myself among them, which is fine and often a thing I enjoy in fiction (because I'm way too empathetic and that distance helps tone down my distress at every little thing ever). But with an asexual main character... well, I wouldn't quite feel guilty about not identifying with her, but I'd be conscious of it the entire time I was reading in a way that would be distracting, and wouldn't be enjoyable.
Another possible element is that I tend to avoid fiction (and fanfic) in which a romantic relationship is the primary plot. Since the majority of all fiction is romance, logically the majority of fiction with ace characters will be as well, and 'has an ace character' isn't enough to make me interested. I think there's also a chance that romance fiction is in fact more likely to have an ace character, and/or to be labeled as having one (particularly in the case of fandom/fanfic/original work in fandom-derived areas). A creator whose primary story focus is the characters' romantic and sexual relationships is more likely to consider the characters' romantic and sexual orientations, and therefore more likely to explicitly call a character asexual (whether in the story itself, a summary/description, or tags). Trying to read a story with an asexual character but being bored because it's a romance gives me about the same not-quite-guilty-but-not-comfortable feeling as being unable to identify with an asexual character does.
When I was in college I explained Asexuality 101 to various people or groups of people at various times, and one of the things I found myself explaining a lot is that "asexual" is actually just as much an umbrella term as "queer" or "trans" is. Even without including demisexuality and the gray-a spectrum in the term (which at the time as far as I knew, at least, the most common approach was to just say "asexuality and gray-asexuality" if you wanted to discuss both) "asexual" includes asexuals of every romantic orientation and aroaces and people who prefer not to use the construct of romantic orientation, asexuals who are repulsed and who enjoy sex and who don't care too much either way, asexuals who lack attraction or libido or both or who experience both but are asexual anyway, because humans are complicated and sexuality is complicated and human sexuality is, therefore, utterly bizarre, and it would be weirder if asexuality (or any sexuality) were easy to define.**
And I think that's a factor too; there are asexual people whose experience of What It's Like To Be Asexual will have not one single thing in common with my experience of being asexual, and so a character that perfectly represents them will just leave me confused. Which gets back to the thing about asexuality not really being sufficient for me to identify with a character, and the way that that fact runs into my expectation that it should be sufficient. Like walking down a sidewalk, pausing to do something, then looking up and discovering a wall half an inch from my nose. It's not painful, but it's jarring and annoying and I kind of want to look around and check if anyone saw that, because if so I'll be embarrassed about it.
(And I expect that most likely there are other factors, but I'm not coming up with them right now and this is long enough already, so I'll wind down here.)
I don't think this is a problem, or something that needs to be fixed; if "I'm not consuming the fiction that I would have expected myself to consume" is a problem at all, it's definitely the most minor one I've ever experienced. If it does need to be fixed (or prevented), I think that "have more ace representation so it's not a Rare New Extraordinary Thing all the time" is probably the solution, and I'm pretty sure that aces are already in favor of more well done ace representation in fiction.
But it's still an experience, and it's been gnawing at my brain for months, so I'm posting this and... well, we'll see if and what use people make of it. Has anyone else had the same or a similar experience? Any thoughts on other factors which I didn't think of? Some other related thing I missed?
*I'm not discussing aromantic or agender or nonbinary representation/my reactions to it because 1: asexuality is by far my "primary" identity (in the sense that it's significant to how I define and think of myself, while being aromantic and agender are just sort of... facts that forms sometimes request; probably largely because I settled on both those identities much later), and 2: frankly I haven't encountered aromantic or agender representation enough or in the right ways to experience this dynamic with them. Or any dynamic, really.
**If you want to argue with me about the definition of What Is Really Truly Actually Asexual and how something I included Doesn't Count, please make a separate post and like, send me a link or something if you really want my opinion specifically. My opinion is pretty firm but I'm willing to discuss it in good faith, but it's not the point of this post and I'd rather not go off on that tangent here. Same if you want to argue that gray-asexuality ought to by default be included with the term 'asexual;' I don't honestly care either way on that one, I'm just describing the vocabulary I was familiar with at the time.

Change Through the Aro Renaissance (Carnival of Aros, September 2020)
I have both witnessed and participated in many changes of the aro community. I remember being a baby aroace in 2015 and mostly lurking as I followed many aro and ace blogs. Back then, it seemed the aro community was mostly the aroace community, more linked to ace, not yet having developed its own identity. I remember trying to find more ways to engage in the aro community and stumbling upon aroplane, which was an aro forum before arocalypse, but I think it was inactive and I’d looked for forums during the absence between the two. After lurking and solidifying my confidence in my identity, I’d kinda drifted away from actively participating in the community at all for a little while, so I’m not particularly aware what happened in between; I’m vaguely aware the arocalypse forums were created in 2016, but it seems in my absence from the community in 2016-2017, much of what had been there had become lost, presumably decimated by the tolls of exclusionary discourse.
In 2018, I was in college where I could be more outwardly queer, and I started seeking out community more. On one hand, engaging with college queer organization made me want to bring more visibility to ace and aro things, especially aro….during this time, I met many alloro aces who I couldn’t relate to, which started pushing me towards centering my aro identity more. I remember wanting aro-spec awareness week recognized at my college and in trying to do so, realized the arospecawarenessweek tumblr had become inactive, for they had not updated the date that year. I started following more aro tumblr blogs and joined the forums and then joined an aro discord server that spring, and that was when I started to truly engage in the aro community.
It was exhilarating interacting with other aros, both on discord and then how we carried that over to tumblr. I fondly remember the coining of arogender and subsequently developing the flag for it. We all followed and reblogged from eachother and it made it energizing to engage in the community because we could feel confident that the effort we put forth to create things would not be wasted, because our content was shared amongst ourselves in our tiny community. Many of us blogging starting then had not really participated in the aro community before; many of us were my age, late high school to early college student aged, treading into actively participating in community for the first time, and thus our knowledge of our history and our terminology was distorted by time and viewed by the remaining crumb trails on the internet.
This was the time when our community was reborn, reborn from the ashes of the discourse and created into something new, a more independent aro community brighter than we’d ever been before: This was the aro renaissance. In fact, “aro renaissance” is part of the blog title we used when we made aromantic-official in May 2018. I’d had the idea because I noticed most of the older modded aro blogs of old had become dormant, and it would be good to have some sort of group ensuring the continuation of events like Aro-spec awareness week and maintaining resources like a glossary. At the time, we were thinking small in the context of a tumblr blog, but it was a start.
I remember around December 2018, many flags were made. There was the blue-orange aroace flag and shortly after I made an aroace flag of my own, and then an a-spec flag, and then there were other a-spec flags too I think; we were wanting to differentiate between a-spec, an umbrella term encompassing both aro-spec and ace-spec, from aroace, a specific identity indicating being both aro and ace at the same time...though there’s still some confusion between the two in terms of flag usage still. Shortly after, there was also an aro allo flag made, and the allosexual aro community grew as a more distinct established component of the aro community; no longer was the aro community solely an aroace community, we had become an independent aro community.
In late January 2019 I’d went to the Creating Change conference, where there was the first ever aro & ace hospitality suite and I interacted with other a-spec activists, including people from the fairly newly named TAAAP (The Ace and Aro Advocacy Project). It was refreshing seeing the advancement of aro activism as more than just a subset of ace, and interesting to see the development of activism out in more the “real” world rather than just on my corner of the internet. I remember then hearing how they were planning to host the first carnival of aros (inspired by the longer-running carnival of aces), and since then it has been nice having carnival of aros to foster discussion of many aro topics.
I remember that first carnival of aros coinciding with a lot of clashing between the aro and ace communities, sparked even more by the specific topic of the month relating aro and ace communities. I think we, the aro community, were frustrated at being ignored. The ace community had continued to grow and gain recognition and visibility, while claiming to represent us as well but in a way that was more a misrepresentation, depicting aro as a subset of ace, thus further erasing the reality of our experiences. We were frustrated and bitter, often justifiably so; even I as an aroace was frustrated with the ace communities treatment of aros at that point, and I know many aro allos were even more upset. I think we were also still less sure footed, with our community still establishing-itself, so as a result were more defensive and scrambling for anything we could claim as our own, often misguided by the often incomplete or misinformed scraps of posts around different words and such. (In hindsight I think there were some inaccuracies in my first carnival of aros post that february, but it was an accurate look at what we were frustrated and upset about at the time).
I remember also that February more was done to celebrate ASAW than had been in years previous, though it was still small. I also remember some divisiveness between the aroace and aro allo sides of the aro community, which caused an unfortunate binary which subsequently emphasized the need for terminology of aros who were neither asexual nor allosexual, thus many discussions about “non-SAM” aros, and other words for that concept. I think that continued well into that summer.
Speaking of that summer, in June 2019 AUREA was launched! This one wasn’t started by me, but naturally I ended up pulled into doing more aro activism stuff. AUREA (Aromantic-spectrum Union for Recognition, Education, and Advocacy) has wonderful resources including a comprehensive glossary with links (both original and archived) to sources and some flags, and also has various research and lists of other aro-inclusive orgs, including local ones. We also publish multiple articles a month, including a “What’s Going On” article at the start of each month covering what’s going on in the aro community, and then other articles about various topics. AUREA is everything I’d wanted when originally making the aromantic-official blog, but is so much more than I thought to hope for. We collaborated with other activists and made ASAW 2020 even bigger than before, and we also launched an aro census, and just so many different cool projects. It’s so cool having a good comprehensive centralized aro resource like AUREA and just having a specifically aro activism organization focusing on aro issues specifically, not just having aro included under aro & ace groups. I’m really proud of what we’ve been able to do and what we continue to do.
I feel like in the last year since AUREA has been formed, the aro community feels a lot more solidified and stable, like we’ve finally concretely established ourselves as an independent entity to be recognized. And even though we’re more solidified, we’re still growing and creating and innovating, there’s still this wonderful energy and motivation which we continue to grow with. Some other things have happened this year, in April 2020 we had to kinda scramble to keep the arocalypse forums going, and now I’m a mod there too because I don’t seem to know how to not be involved in things, especially because I vehemently care about seeing them continued. (Why is it always spring? 3 springs in a row I’ve gotten involved in big ongoing aro projects like that). Then June 2020, TAAAP pride chats started and have continued every month, which is a really cool opportunity for people from the a-spec community, both ace and aro, to gather to discuss various topics, and also to interact with various a-spec activists.
It’s been really fascinating watching and helping to aro community grow over the past few years, and I feel like I’ve grown with it. Through my activism, I’ve learned a lot about what I am good at and how I can work well in a team, which has helped me gain a lot of confidence about things where in-person experiences had made me lose confidence. It’s also kinda wild when I think about the scale of it all; the aro, and also ace, communities are really fairly small, such that it’s not hard to end up doing this activism on a national or international scale. I never really set out to be an activist, I just wanted to get involved and cared about improving things and have lots of ideas, so I kept doing things, and now I look at what I’ve done and realize that huh this is activism, I am an activist, and probably a rather prominent aro activist at that. It’s weird especially compared to how extremely ineffective I feel I’ve been at doing any sort of activism at my college, to then think of what I’ve managed to help accomplish on an international scale online. I feel inspired by the changes, the growth of the aro community, and I look forward to helping it grow even more.

Ambassadors from Aceland
[This is an entry for the September 2019 Carnival of Aces and has been cross-posted from Asexuality Archive.]
In the years since I discovered asexuality, I’ve heard a lot of stories and I’ve told a lot of stories. But one thing I’ve noticed is that we’re often reluctant to tell our stories. Sure, we’ll freely tell the story of how we learned we were asexual or how we came out, but beyond that, stories don’t get told in the same way, if they’re told at all.
Some stories don’t want to be told. They’re kept guarded and secret until they burst out in a moment of despair or are offered in a moment of empathy. These stories are not freely told, but rather, they are paid for in pain. Rarely, these stories are opaquely hinted at to keep them from getting free on their own.
Then there are the stories that we “tell”, but never really tell. They’re short, surface level anecdotes, and we only “tell” them when prompted. We’re giving answers or making points, but aren’t really telling stories.
--
Telling our stories is one of the most important things we can do. They show others who we are. They show others that they are not alone. And sometimes, they show us that we are not alone. Every piece of the asexual community started when a story was told.
I am like this.
I am like that, too.
So it makes me sad when I see stories that don’t get told or that only get told part way. We are here because of the stories that have been told, and it is our duty to tell our stories for the future.
A few years ago, there was an “Asexual Story Project” website that I hoped would bring some of these untold stories to light, but most of what ended up there was the same single paragraph story of the lightbulb moment or tales of coming out. Short and to the point and safe. Then there was a book called “47 Asexual Stories”. Quick responses to a questionnaire, typically no longer than a paragraph. Short and to the point and safe.
Short and to the point and safe. That’s all most of our stories get to be.
--
“How I Learned About Asexuality” or “How I Came Out” are stories that get told so frequently because they are universal stories and touch on key moments in our journey. But we also tell them because they’re typically uncontroversial. They’re a story you can quickly tell to a group of strangers in the back room of a former coffee shop in Seattle, and they’ll get you. We expect them to be personal and unique, so we allow them to be personal and unique. Whatever it entails, it’s not wrong, it’s not something that reflects poorly on asexuality. It’s just a quick tale of what happened. It’s short and to the point and safe.
Beyond that, and our stories become shorter and more general. Details become meta and abstract. We don’t tell our stories, we tell about our stories and end there. It’s like we’re trying to win Hemingway’s Six Word Story competition.
Had a girlfriend. That didn’t work.
I had sex. It was boring.
Why does she even love me?
I’ve got a sex free kink.
Don’t you dare try touching me.
I was broken. Now I’m not.
Short and to the point and safe.
We dare not tread beyond these narrow confines. Anything further and the I disappears, replaced by a “Some do, some don’t” we-ness. We fall into generality, into a 101 lecture. We become Ambassadors from Aceland: No longer individuals, but representatives of our community, forced to present the approved party line, to provide the big picture so people don’t get the wrong idea about what asexuality is. We censor ourselves or sprinkle our stories with “Not All Aces” caveats, because that’s what an Ambassador does.
We can’t talk about who we fell in love with, because some aces are aromantic.
We can’t talk about what feeling repulsed is like, because that would give people the impression that all aces hate sex.
We can’t talk about when we did feel attracted to someone, because being gray or demi makes things too complicated.
We can’t talk about where our “first time” happened, because that would be confusing and not “ace enough”.
We can’t talk about why we want kids, because we all know how babies are made and people wouldn’t understand.
We can’t talk about how we’re fine living alone, because some aces want relationships.
We can’t talk about our own lives, because they don’t fit the story we’re forced to tell.
--
I saw a post the other day where someone was explicitly asking for examples for things that “make the ace community look bad or lose credibility”. Beyond the face value horror of deliberately trying to be the respectability police, I wondered how many voices it would silence, how many stories would not be told. And the responses were things like “Not having a clear definition of asexuality” and “Too many micro labels”.
A good Ambassador is the flawless representative of the cleanest image. A good Ambassador sticks to the official story. A good Ambassador doesn’t rock the boat.
Fuck. That. Noise.
It’s your story. Tell it your way. Don’t give a damn what anyone else thinks.
There are enough of us around now. We don’t have to be the Ambassador from Aceland all the time. No one ever appointed you to that position anyway. We don’t have to waste words by saying things like “This is my personal experience and all aces are different”. We don’t have to worry about whether or not someone will get the wrong idea about asexuality. We don’t have to omit things because they’re not ace enough. There are as many different ways to be asexual as there are asexual people, and it’s time for us to embrace and explore that diversity.
Get out there and tell your story.

Stop & Reflect: 9 Years Well-Spent with Chemistry
Audio Track
Interactive Image
The following is an interactive image, simply click on the pictures within the image to be linked directly to the corresponding blog posts.
The Story
It all started in 2011, I remember casually watching my favourite YouTube Channel - The Periodic Tables of Videos one evening in my dorm room, and in one of the videos by Prof Martyn Poliakoff (now Sir Martyn Poliakof) was where I got to know about the International Year of Chemistry 2011. Having just graduated from the Malaysian Matriculation Programme in May 2011 and waiting to pursue a degree in September that year, I decided to make good use of the "sem break" by participating in one of the many competitions held in conjunction of IYC2011 - IUPAC Polymer Division's International Video and Essay Competition on "A World without Polymers". Little did I know that a simple submission changed the trajectory of my life!
You may have guessed it right, I won my first international competition which came with a chance to present my winning video at a special ceremony held on August 2 at the IUPAC World Chemical Congress, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Thanks to the sponsorship from Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), IUPAC Polymer Division, Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA), I was able to travel all the way there for the award ceremony. For the first time in my life, I traveled for 26 hours, transited at Dubai and New York before reaching San Juan, PR. Many more "firsts" from this point onward.
First time attending a congress, first time presenting in front of profs/assoc. profs/Dr./academics/scientists in a foreign country, first time meeting an american friend - Jess whom I've met on the internet (via YouTube personal messaging) and first time surrounded by so many English native speakers!
A week after returning to Malaysia, I was being interviewed and featured by R.AGE - The Star newspaper (First time having my portrait printed on a whole newspaper page). In mid-September, I headed north to pursue my Bachelors degree in Pure Chemistry at Universiti Sains Malaysia. During the undergraduate orientation week which so happens to coincide with Karnival Kimia Malaysia (K2M - Malaysian Chemistry Carnival), IKM Northern branch gave me an opportunity to speak to my fellow course mates as an invited speaker. It was my first time being formally invited to speak at an event!
The following year, I was also invited by IKM Northern branch to give a talk to secondary school students as an invited speaker at K2M 2012. In my second year, I did an internship at the Department of Chemistry Malaysia (JKM) - Penang Branch under the Forensic Toxicology Department. In Sept 2013, IKM Headquarters invited me to give two talks of 30 minutes at K2M 2013 (National Science Center). I remember the talks were held over the weekend and I had to travel by plane to make it back in time for Monday lectures. Those were very unique experiences to have as an undergraduate. In my final year of undergraduate studies, I got an offer to pursue my PhD in Newcastle University, UK. So I went over to the UK to start my PhD before I had my BSc graduation ceremony. About 3 months into my PhD, I flew back home for a week to attend the ceremony.
While doing my PhD, I have been actively involved in science outreach events/activities. I had the chance to design outreach courses/summer school/speak at events, present posters at the House of Parliaments, etc. If you are interested, I have a separate interactive chart for my PhD as follows (each photo on the timeline would link to a designated blog post).
In August 2018, I successfully defended my thesis (passed my VIVA) and was awarded the title Dr - officially Dr Yvonne Choo Shuen Lann. I came back to Malaysia after my graduation ceremony in December 2018 and took a break to recharge. During that "career break", I have been invited to speak at University of Southampton Malaysia (My first research talk post-PhD!), attended Minggu Sains Negaraand the best thing of all was to be given the chance to contribute back to IKM (the professional organisation who supported my journey to San Juan back in 2011) by preparing the bidding slides for both IUPAC2025 and MACRO2026. IKM won both bids at IUPAC2019 sometime in July 2019. Congratulations IKM! :)
I think I went a bit too fast, forgot to mention that in June 2019, I was awarded an element in the Periodic Table of Younger Chemists in conjunction with the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019) as Bohrium! All 118 elements were showcased in IUPAC2019, in Paris.
In August 2019, I started my role as a lecturer at Xiamen University Malaysia. The transition from a PhD student to a lecturer hasn't been very easy, but I am glad to say that after looking back at where I started off and compare it to where I am now, I've improved and will continue to improve.
In December 2019, I was given the chance to represent IKM at ACS SEA-GIC event (Another one of my firsts). I joined the Malaysian Young Chemists Network (MYCN) in Jan this year and was appointed as the media ambassador chairperson.
At IKM's recent AGM (end of July), I was given a huge opportunity to serve IKM as a council member for the 2020/2021 term - a role that comes with great responsibilities and requires a lot of commitment. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and will be sure to do the best I can!
I am going to end this reflect post by expressing gratitude to those who have played a part in supporting my Chemistry journey - both direct and indirectly over the course of 9 years (Thank you very much) along with two #notetoself quotes: “Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent” – Wendy Flynn “As long as you are learning, you are not failing.” – Bob Ross
Here's to another 9 amazing years with Chemistry! Best of luck, Yvonne! You can do it, just don't give up! :)
P/s: Why 9 years? Well, 9 in Chinese means longevity/eternity and simply because 10 is too mainstream haha

My New Blog
[This is my entry for the September 2019 Carnival of Aces]
My meta-story is that I feel the urge to write my story at major points in my life. Previously, it was about my first steps as a father, now it is about my aro-ace journey. And my focus is on the mundane: the mundane thoughts I have, the mundane difficulties I encounter. The only reason that this is a blog and not a personal diary is that I wish that maybe someone would stumble upon my blog and learn something useful for them.
I have some all the catching up to do; some stories that I want to tell but I have yet to write before being “now” and telling stories as they happen: my testing the water coming outs, my real (partial) coming out, my first pride, “oh shit! I was out of the deck, now I’m not”, how I explained my (a)sexuality to my kids, probably something about how my “wet dream” are dry.
Prompts
How do you decide which stories [...] not to tell?
I don’t know which kinds of stories I will hesitate or not post at all, because I have yet to live them.
What medium do you use for your storytelling?
Tumblr, because I found out an ace community there. With my new identity (I’m not out enough to reuse my old ones yet) and now with a Tumblr account, I can now heart LGBTQ+ posts that I read.
I’m using French for my stories because it is my main language and I have yet to find some French aro and/or ace stories.
How do you handle other people who may appear in your personal stories?
As anonymously as I am here. Most people would only get a descriptor of their role in my story, I might gave a nickname to recurring people, or just use their title/how they relate to me.
Are there any stories you’re [...] tired of hearing?
In a sense, memes! To me, they are more noise than signal, because I’m searching for informative/stories blogs.

With the enhancements we’ve made to all 5 of the haunted houses, the spooky haunted graveyard, and the great cast of creepy new characters, the 2019 season of Screams® is sure to be the scariest Screams® ever. You don’t want to miss it!” - Coy Sevier, Screams® General Manager
Plus, there’s a whole lot more! When you’re ready to take a break from being scared, Screams® has a DJ spinning music on the Screams® stage, Scary-Oke, games of skill, shops, face painting, waxed hands, Henna tattoos, Palm Readers, and Psychic readings.
Screams® also has a food court and full-service restaurant. For those over 21, there is a full bar and 3 different pubs featuring a great selection of seasonal and craft beers such as ZiegenBock, Spaten Oktoberfest, Bishop Crackberry Cider, Spaten Lager, Belhaven Black Scottish Stout, Bishop Apple Pineapple Cider, Deep Ellum Blind Lemon, White Claw Black Cherry Hard Seltzer, Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale, Bon & Viv Cranberry Spiked Seltzer and Ace Pear Cider along with Bud Light Platinum, Michelob Ultra and Lime & Cherry Jell-O Shots.
Screams® Halloween Theme Park runs every Friday and Saturday night from September 27 through October 26. The experience will begin at 7:30 PM and continue until 1:30 AM. The single admission price is $35 at the gate and includes all 5 haunted houses, music and Scary-Oke. $4 off discount coupons are available at North Texas Metro® by T-Mobile stores and discount tickets can be purchased on-line at ScreamsPark.com. Visitors can go through the haunted houses as many times as they like (as the crowds will allow). To cut the wait times in half, you may purchase a VIP Fast Pass for $20 on-line or at the event. Screams® is designed for ages 16+ and is not recommended for small children. Costumes and masks are NOT allowed at Screams®.
