Games for Review
My Math 8 class finishing up our linear functions unit. This is the perfect time to use Socrative to do a little review and get some feedback before our unit test.
Our unit covers the following standards and student “ I can” statements:
I can:
- determine if a table, map, set of ordered pairs, graph or equation is a function or not -determine the domain and range from a table, map, or set of ordered pairs - Create a table, graph and equation from a real-world scenario -calculate inputs and outputs from a real world scenario. -characterize a graph as discrete, continuous, linear, nonlinear, increasing, decreasing, both, or neither Standards: (PA State) M08.B-F.1.1.1: Determine whether a relation is function M08.B-F.1.1.2: Compare properties of two functions M08.B-F.1.1.3 Interpret the equation y = mx+b M08.B-F.2.1.1: Use functions to model real world relationships M08.B-F.2.1.2 Describe qualitatively the functional relationships.
The Socrative review will not take the whole period so here is my plan for the day.
A. Warm up: Independent v Dependent Variable review: Students will be given 4 scenarios where they need to determine which is the independent variable and the dependent variable: Example: Justin has $300 and saves $10 every week. Independent: time (weeks) Dependent: Money saved (dollars) B. Socrative Review: Students will log on to Socrative.com and take quiz. The quiz is a practice test for their exam on Tuesday. The questions are similar and will provide feedback and data on their learning.
C. Carnegie Learning Online: Carnegie Learning Online (Mathia x) is software that mirrors our textbook in class. This is independent and allows the students to wrestle with the content at their own pace
The great thing about using both Socrative and Carnegie is I get a TON of data right before their unit test. This allows me a final chance to pull kids who need specific remediation before the test and help them get to where they need to be. Not a super thrilling lesson, but the kids LOVE doing their own thing on the computer at their own pace, especially for a review.
