Carl Robert Holty (1900–1973) was a German-born American abstract painter. Raised in Wisconsin, he was the first major abstract painter to gain notoriety from the state. Harold Rosenberg described Holty as "a figure of our art history," known for his use of color, shape and form.

Carl Holty, “Dawn Rider,” 1947. This work by German-American Artist Carl Holty borrows from cubism and Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase.” Holty was a bridge between European modernism and the development of American abstraction. He studied with Hans Hoffmann in Munich before Hoffman came to States. He then spent five years in Paris where Robert Delaney invited him to join the Abstraction-Creation Group. The only other American invited was Alexander Calder. He was close friends with Miro, and when Miro came to the States, he worked in Holty’s studio. He is best known for his late color field works. #carlholty #modernism #interiordesign #cubism #abstractart #colorfield #horseandrider #paintingoftheday #artoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/B1nEIZYgsd-/?igshid=1hu4gt5xvu3cn

Carl Robert Holty, Red Desert, 1955-56, oil on canvas, Gift of Mari and James A. Michener, 1968.
Working in Paris and New York immediately before World War II, American-born Holty painted in a variety of abstract styles: his work at this time was associated with cubism, biomorphism, and Abstraction-Création. Upon his return to the U.S., he became a founding member of American Abstract Artists, a group that sought to develop an American abstraction that differed from both European abstraction and the then-popular style of American regionalism. Red Desert, the painting included here, comes from later in his career, when the artist was exploring a more organic abstraction in which amorphous planes of color interact and overlap to create washy fields reminiscent of light as it plays off the land.
