Pyrrhuloxia redux.

Pyrrhuloxia / cardenal desértico (Cardinalis sinuatus) at Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary, Cochise County, Arizona. 

I love pyrrhuloxias. For most of the year they are solitary and dispersed, and I never see more than a few at a time. But in fall, and throughout winter, they become chummy, and small flocks begin to hang around the feeders. There are about ten birds that are regulars at Ash Canyon, and their bright red feathers are cheering now that showier, splashier birds have departed south.

Pyrrhuloxia / cardenal desértico (Cardinalis sinuatus), with bright red mating plumage.

Dark-eyed juncos / junco ojos negros (Junco hyemalis). Oregon and gray-headed morphs are shown here. 

Acorn woodpecker / carpintero bellotero (Melanerpes formicivorus).

Cassin’s finch / pinzón serrano (Haemorhous cassinii).
