The Beauty Products That Are Flying Off The Shelves in December
Not to stress you out, but we’re less than two weeks out from Christmas and the panic should be starting to set in. If you want a window into what you should be buying for the beauty enthusiast on your list—and also come across like you’re really in the know— all you need to be aware of is what’s been selling like crazy these last few weeks. (Also, finding out what everyone else is buying can satisfy the nerdiest of the nosy among us). We checked in with four different Toronto beauty destinations to see what they couldn’t keep in stock. You can thank us later.
 Jacob & Sebastian
1/4
Jacob & Sebastian
Tata Harper Créme Riche
($247, Jacob & Sebastian)
“We really didn’t expect that a $247 face moisturizer would literally FLY off of the shelves, but this one did. The JUST re-launched Creme Riche by all-natural beauty brand Tata Harper was likely on many a Christmas list. It is almost always men who are coming in and pulling up a screen shot on their phones to purchase the product for their partners. We did an in-store demo when the product first launched, and gave away free samples, so we assume that customers LOVED the product, but put it on their Christmas list since it is pretty expensive.” —Joel Dart, owner, Jacob & Sebastian

Cardea Rose Quartz Roller
($38, Jacob & Sebastian)
“We have sold jade and quartz facial rollers for years, but suddenly (likely due to its Instagram popularity these days), the rose quartz roller seems to be a must-have this holiday season. At $38, the beautifully boxed, and really sturdy Cardea AuSet rose quartz roller is just so EASY to gift to any beauty lover, since it pairs so well with existing products (facial oils, serums, etc). We have gone from ordering about 12 a month, to over 80 per month! Luckily, since the brand is based out of Niagara Falls, restocking is relatively quick and easy.”

Jacob & Sebastian
Boy Smells Kush Candle
($46, Jacob & Sebastian)
“Maybe it’s due to Ontario’s new cannabis legislation, or due to the drop in the temperature outside, but the Kush candle by L.A. based Boy Smells sells at least 10 to 1 of any other candle in the shop. We try our very best to keep this hot product in store, but it usually pre-sells even before we get a re-stock. It really is the perfect non “skunky” cannabis-inspired scent, so we are not really surprised at how popular it is.”

4/4
Jacob & Sebastian
RODIN x Vanessa Traina luxury lip and cheek oil
($38, Jacob & Sebastian)
“These JUST launched, and after a single posting on IG, they sold out in one day. Unlike the super saturated original RODIN lipsticks, this collection is more about a simple, no-nonsense “hue” of creamy colour, making them a really easy, and useful gift. Luckily, we were able to order a bunch more to satisfy all pre-orders, and do have extra for the gifting season. We were really sad to hear the news of Linda exiting her company, but somehow street style star, Vanessa Traina seems to have captured some of Rodin’s original “vibe” with this collection. The oils are really useful, and also so beautiful on both the lip or cheek.”

Gee Beauty
1/3
Gee Beauty
Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil
($126, Gee Beauty)
“This all-natural, nutrient dense body oil is a consistent best seller for holiday, season over season. I think it’s because it represents luxury but works with every skin type and age range. It’s a very luxurious gift that people wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves.” —Stephanie Gee, co-owner of Gee Beauty

2/3
Gee Beauty
Jade Roller
($40, Gee Beauty)
“Second to the body oil are definitely skin tools. The jade roller is more popular. It’s huge on IG, seen on top shelves. It’s also a great gift builder: you can throw it in with a lip balm and eye mask. It’s a form of luxury and self care, it’s fun, it’s age appropriate and it looks beautiful on your bathroom counter.”
Buy Now
3/3
Gee Beauty
Rose Gua Sha Scraping Massage Tool
($35, Gee Beauty)
“People love the gua sha stone more once they understand it. It’s a little more anti-aging because it helps reduce inflammation and is more of a face sculptor. It flushes out toxins through the lymphatic system.”
Buy Now
Tips Nail Bar
1/2
Tips Nail Bar
Gold Derma Roller
($72, Well.ca)
“I got introduced to the gold derma roller when I had a treatment at Face Gym in London and bought one there. I became obsessed and brought in about 40 to Tips and they flew off the shelves in about two weeks. They’re visually stimulating–people would see them and say ‘what are those?’ and would buy 3 or 4 at a time at $50 each. They had never used a tool like that but knew about jade rollers. We can’t get any more for another few weeks so we’ve missed the holiday boat, but you can buy one from well.ca.” —Leeanne Colley, owner of Tips Nail Bar
Buy Now
2/2
Tips Nail Bar
24KT Gold Mask Trio
($19, Hadaka)
“What’s also selling is the Hadaka face, eye and lip masks. You can reuse them 2-3 times and they’re really reasonably priced. The face mask is $12, the eye and lip masks are $6 or you can buy a set of the three that comes in this gold package for $19. I think it’s the price point but also again they’re gold; it’s not like your typical white sheet mask. So they’re super interesting to look at. We brought those in three weeks ago and have sold out of them, I would say, 8 times.”

The Detox Market
1/3
The Detox Market
Odacité Skincare Crystal Contour Gua Sha
($47, The Detox Market)
“The biggest thing that is drawing people into the store is all of the social media awareness that’s been brought to crystal beauty tools. It all started with the jade roller, which most people are familiar with, and then Odacité released their gua sha stone. Skeptism is obviously a big thing, but people were starting to see improvements just using them themselves at home. Puffiness is a big one but people have also been using it more strategically for detoxification, lymphatic drainage and even sinus relief.” —Laura Townsend, marketing director, The Detox Market

The Detox Market
Detox Mode Altogether Oil
($42, The Detox Market)
“In October, The Detox Market launched its own brand, Detox Mode. We encouraged our community to get involved in the selection process of what skus we launched. The dry oil came about because one thing we were learning when we asked our clients what products that they couldn’t get rid of from the conventional world, was that they were spending all of their money on face products but not paying attention to the rest of their body. So the dry oil was the perfect fit as we didn’t have one at the store. It can be used on the fly, just right on after the shower on damp skin. The bottle is also travel friendly and has a really handy spray.”

The Detox Market
The Best of Green Beauty Box
($189, The Detox Market )
“The top selling sku right now is our limited edition roundup of all the best selling products of 2018. The value of the box is over $370. Almost everything in the box is full size and it includes cult favourites like Goop, Agent Nateur, Odacité, and our best selling mascara from W3LL People.”

MNDFL Beauty Pop Up Showcases Green Beauty Products
Tumblr media
The holiday season is busy and you have to be selective about what events you attend, but if you are a fan of green beauty products, you’ll want to put the MNDFL Beauty Pop Up event in your calendar for Thursday, December 6, 2018. This third annual FREE event takes place at The Jam Factory in Toronto’s Riverside neighbourhood from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will introduce you to some incredible Canadian green beauty brands. It’s a great opportunity to try some new green beauty products and do some holiday shopping. Although the event is free, if you purchase a $10 VIP ticket, that will entitle you to attend the VIP Cocktail reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., which includes a complimentary holiday cocktail, as well as a swag bag of samples of some of the green beauty brands at the event.
Tumblr media
The MNDFL Beauty Pop Up at The Jam Factory on Thurs., Dec. 6, 2018
I received some full-size products that will be available for sale at the event in order to review for this blog post. I was familiar with some of these green beauty brands, but not all of them so I was pleased to discover some amazing new Canadian green beauty products.
Face Products
Sahajan Skincare
Sahajan Balance Ayurvedic Blend Toner is a toner that not only cleans skin due to the key ingredient, Moringa Oil; it also contains orange, lemon and bilberry extracts to gently exfoliate. The smell is amazing and I find, very calming.
Graydon Skincare
Graydon Skincare Full Moon Serum is an exquisite formulation containing botanical collagen, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinol to prevent aging and protect your skin. The serum is infused with malachite, known for clearing all the chakras and stimulating the heart and throat chakras.
More brands at MNDFL Beauty Pop Up at The Jam Factory
Muni Muni
Slime is a whimsical cleanser from Muni Muni that really does the job. Although it’s a bit sticky like its namesake implies, once applied to the skin, this cleanser is incredibly soft and soothing. It’s not too thick so it rinses off very easily. A surprising favourite of mine!
Etymologie Skincare
Etymologie’s founder, Raquela Cheesmond, has an M.Sc. from McGill and conducted her research on sunscreens and cosmetic preservatives in Milan. I tried Etymoligie Active Clay Cleanser. In case you are thinking that this is a dense cleanser, it is the opposite. In fact, the ingredients (Moringa oil, red clay, ylang ylang) make it quite watery. It’s one of my favourite cleansers. If you are someone (like I was) who doesn’t always take the time to cleanse your face properly, this cleanser will have you looking forward to the morning just to be able to use this product. The cleanser comes with a muslin cloth to use to remove the cleanser while gently exfoliating your skin.
Sappho New Paradigm
Sappho New Paradigm CC Cream in Light provides a translucent foundation for your skin. The CC Cream contains organic aloe juice to hydrate and decrease inflammation. I tried the CC Cream on top of my moisturizer and found it provided good coverage for my rosacea. You can also wear Sappho New Paradigm CC Cream as a primer under your foundation. It also contains 10% zinc oxide to offer some protection against the elements.
Iremia Skincare
Iremia Skincare Restorative Facial Oil is a gentle containing Jojoba, Rosehip, Argan and Sea Buckthorn Oils to hydrate, regenerate and improve skin tone, as well as help repair skin damage. I like the oil’s lightweight consistency and the blend of botanical oils smells lovely.
Brands at MNDFL Beauty Pop Up on Thurs., Dec. 6, 2018
Sweet Living Co.
Sweet Living Co.’s Grapefruit & Lavender Luxury Cleanser has a gorgeous whipped consistency with an intoxicating citrusy aroma. You’ll enjoy washing your face with this luxury cleanser. Unlike other cleansers, it won’t dry your skin due to the cleanser’s ingredients including holistically raised grass-fed tallow, Pink Grapefruit, Sweet Orange and Lavender essential oils.
Pura Botanicals
Pura Botanicals Neroli Eye Serum is a heaven-sent product for those of us who have dark circles under their eyes. Use the easy, roll-on applicator to apply the serum under the eyes before bedtime. Containing Neroli essential oil, rosehip, aloe vera and lavender, this eye serum has a citrusy scent that will help you drift off to sleep while working to eliminate dark circles and increasing collagen production. It also contains jojoba oil to hydrate dry skin.
Lips and Mouth
Living Libations
I’ve always been a fan of Haliburton, Ontario based Living Libations – their rose glow creme is magnificent! – and was happy to try their Happy Gum Drops, which is a mixture of essential oils such as Peppermint, Clove, Seabuckthorn, Oregano, and Cinnamon that you can use in place of toothpaste to restore your gums’ health. You can also place a drop of Happy Gum Drops on your dental floss to access those hard-to-reach places or place a drop on your tongue for fresh breath.
Boosh
This was my first time trying Boosh products. The balm, which contains organic coconut oil, and beeswax culled from their own organic farm. Hyaluronic acid and organic peppermint oil give this balm its plumping feature. I tried it and it works! My lips were definitely plumper! Wear it underneath your favourite lipstick for fuller lips.
Body Products
basd Bodycare
I had been introduced to basd Bodycare Coffee Scrub before. It’s an invigorating scrub that removes dead skin cells while reducing the appearance of cellulite and acne scars…the coffee aroma will have you jumping out of your shower and ready to face the day.
Buck Naked Soap Company
I love handcrafted, natural soaps and the soaps from Buck Naked Soap Company were made to accommodate the owner’s infant son who was experiencing a rash from traditional soaps. Their Indigo soap (yes, it’s tinted with indigo!) has a gardenia scent and is absolutely heavenly. All their soaps are made with coconut oil, avocado oil and shea butter. Other soap scents include Avocado; Chamomile & Calendula; Citrus & Comfrey; Cranberry & Mint; Coffee Start Up; Energizing Marigold; Drunken (Beer); Himalayan Salt; Jasmine Mosaic; Lavender & Rosemary; Poppy Seed & Tea Tree; and Lavender & Rosemary.
Some of the green beauty products at MNDFL Beauty Pop Up
Well Told
Their Health Anti-Inflammatory Booster is a supplement made from Organic Turmeric. I’ve heard great things about the healing properties of turmeric including lowering blood pressure, boosting the immune system, promoting good digestion, preventing heart disease and even preventing Alzheimer’s. I’ve just started taking the Anti-Inflammatory Booster and I’ll report back on how I’m feeling in a few weeks.
Clean Kiss Organics
I had heard of Clean Kiss Organics, but had never tried their products. I received a sample of their Make That Kiss Last 100% Natural Cream Deodorant. This natural deodorant contains lavender, rosemary and peppermint for a very calming scent and its tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial properties.
Province Apothecary
I have tried many of Toronto-based Province Apothecary’s products and love them. Have a look at their jade roller. The Healing Eczema Balm can be used on babies or anyone with sensitive skin to sooth skin. I’m going to keep this balm handy in the summer for insect bites or any other skin irritations.
Kaia Naturals
I’ve been using Kaia Naturals’s The Takesumi Detox Bamboo Charcoal Deodorant and love it. I received Kaia The Matcha Detox Hot Bath and can’t wait to try it. Inspired by Japanese wellness practice, these salts contain matcha and eucalyptus and turmeric to eliminate toxins, reduce inflammation and muscle pain.
Merben International
Merben’s Bikini Brush is a soft natural jute brush to use in the bikini area to remove dead layers of skin so that your hair grows properly. You’ll be pleased to know that the Bikini Brush is ethically made in Sri Lanka by men and women who are protected by regulations established by the International Labour Organization.
Other Brands at MNDFL Beauty Pop Up
Other brands you’ll learn about at the event include Suncoat Products, East Coast Glow, Laspa Suncare, Plume Science Lash and Brow, Shoosha True, Cardea AuSet, Evelyn Iona, Demes Natural, Wildcraft Care, Anointment, Age Quencher, ZydermaHS, Aromacentric, Ayurvedia Rituals, Helena Lane Skincare and Schaf Skincare.
The MNDFL Beauty Pop Up takes place at The Jam Factory, 2 Matilda Street, on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free. Please confirm your attendance here. Purchase tickets for $10 for the VIP Cocktail Reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. which includes a holiday spirit drink and a deluxe swag bag with over $100 of green beauty product samples.

Toronto’s Uncle Studios to Host Virtual Pop-Up for COVID-19 Relief
Toronto-based slow-fashion clothing brand Uncle Studios has today announced the launch of a virtual pop-up series to help raise funds for COVID-19 relief.
Called ‘Camp Horizons’, the pop-up (which in pre-COVID times was a physical event) will begin on Sunday, May 17, and will include giveaways, panel discussions and events. The brand has partnered with numerous high-profile Canadian and international brands for the series, including Nudestix (which just recently released its first hand sanitizer), Jen Atkin’s OUAI Haircare, Glow Recipe, Greenhouse Juice, Orosa beauty, Canadian bodysuit brand La Reyna, Vancouver-based self-care brand Blume, Toronto’s Locals Only restaurant, Canadian plant-based beauty brand Cardea Auset, Toronto’s Consonant Skincare and Neophyte Jewels. A new event is scheduled to take place every Sunday until June 7.
In a release, co-founder Allegra Shaw, said, “Uncle Studios’ pop-up experience has always been important in terms of building a strong community so it was important for us to bring that same experience online. As the pandemic continues, we want to come together with fellow creatives to use our platform to give back to the charitable organizations helping societies’ most vulnerable.”
As such, 100 per cent of the ticket and care package sales from the event will be donated to CAMH and Nellie’s Administration equally. The care packages are still being finalized however they will include items from the brands involved in the pop-up. As for tickets, the brand is offering a “pay what you can” system. “We understand this is a challenging time so we are taking any monetary donation which will go to COVID-19 support,” the founders tell FASHION.
The pop-up’s events are also a chance for the brand to support creatives who might be struggling in the present circumstances. The series will begin with a graphic tee design contest whereby people are encouraged to submit their designs for consideration. The winner will have their design realized in a T-shirt by Uncle Studios, with 100 per cent of the profits from the sale of the shirt going directly back to the artist. The series will also include fitness and wellbeing-focused sessions, as well as business advice.

11 Brands to Shop in Support of Women on International Women’s Day 2020
International Women’s Day (IWD) is fast approaching. Taking place every year on March 8, the day is dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also holds significance in its call to action, with the entire day dedicated to ideas and plans for accelerating gender parity.
The official theme this year is ‘each for equal,’ and according to Pinterest analytics, recent search results reflect this vision of an equal playing field. For example, searches around going back to school as a mom are up 53 per cent. Inspirational quotes for women motivation are up 755 per cent in searches, quotes for women encouragement are up 300 per cent and girls-supporting-girls quotes have had a 399 per cent increase. According to the UN, women globally earn 23 per cent less than men, and the push for change here is also reflected in Pinterest’s report. It revealed that there has been a 254 per cent increase in women searching about asking for a raise at work, and searches for business start-up ideas are up at an enormous 941 per cent.
In celebration of IWD 2020, here are 11 shopping initiatives to get behind this year.
Jenny Bird
From March 2 to March 8, 20 per cent of all Canadian-site-wide sales are being donated to Dress for Success Canada Foundation.

Dropping on March 8, High Street Cannabis and fashion brand NorBlack NorWhite are releasing a limited-edition drop of branded shirts and socks, available through High Street’s e-commerce site. This is in celebration of Women’s History Month. All earned proceeds will be donated to Sistering, a multi-service agency serving socially isolated women and trans people in Toronto who are at-risk, homeless or precariously-housed. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of visibility of independent artists and creators of colour in mainstream communities.

“We established The Atelier Collective to help bring new opportunities to female entrepreneurs that will work to propel their businesses forward,” says Taryn Herritt, co-founder of The Atelier Collective. “Creating a footprint at Hudson’s Bay’s flagship Toronto location will make it easy and accessible to find and shop these brands.”
Banana Republic
In honour of IWD, Banana Republic donated $100,000 to CARE. A Guide to Face Rollers and Other Skincare Tools You Keep Seeing on Instagram
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact origins of the recent renaissance of mystical skincare tools but we’d venture to say it’s a mix of Goop, coupled with the overarching trend of wellness that has seeped into beauty and possibly their ubiquity all over Instagram. The point is, they’re everywhere these days. “There’s an appetite for some sort of reconnection,” says Jennifer Bonito, co-founder of beauty and wellness brand Cardea AuSet who came out with one last year, of their popularity. “And for anything that allows us to slow down in our lives and in our daily routines.”
Though pretty they might be, what exactly do they do? We break them down:
The Face Roller
Rumour has it that the ancient Egyptian goddess, Auset used rose quartz—a stone that speaks to your heart chakra—to maintain her youthful looks. But don’t discount them in jade, which date back to seventh century China and are known for having healing and protective properties. Spiritual benefits aside, rolling one of these along your face massages the skin, increasing circulation and promoting collagen production. Upward motions generate lift, while downward ones stimulate lymphatic drainage.
Most rollers are dual-ended, and some (like the version from Province Apothecary) have a smooth and studded side. “The studded end is like a body roller,” says Kassia Gooding, brand ambassador for the company. “It really moves the fascia (connective tissue under the skin), breaks up scar tissue and helps with any discolouration or pigmentation.” The smoother side soothes the skin and calms puffiness. Using post-serum or facial oil is best, as it will help your skin absorb the product. Once applied, curl up with a book or Netflix and mindlessly roll away.

  The Dry Brush
More commonly known for use on the body, dry brushes also come in versions for the face and are recommended for those with sensitive skin. It’s a gentler version of a face roller and offers a lot of the same benefits: they soften the skin, provide light exfoliation and encourage lymphatic drainage. Lymph–the fluid that circulates our lymphatic system–carries waste away from our organs and back to the heart. Many lymph vessels live right beneath the skin, so the thought is that by brushing regularly, we’re helping to stimulate the lymph flow in our body, removing toxins in a natural way. They’re used on dry skin prior to cleansing your face or bathing, brushing in firm, small strokes towards the heart.

Gua Sha Stones
These flat crystals are dragged across the skin to promote circulation, collagen production and elasticity. “It’s kind of like the soothing end of a jade roller,” says Gooding. “But it’s a different technique and movement. You can get a little deeper because you’re adding more pressure and pulling rather than rolling and smoothing.”
The pulling and tugging can sound a little intense and indeed, a preliminary Google search produces some pretty gnarly images–mainly blood red backs that evoke references to other painful-looking practices like skin cupping. Gua Sha, like cupping, is another age-old technique that’s been used in China for thousands of years. People would take sharp objects–crystals, animals horns, antlers–and scrape the surface of the skin to improve circulation. But the version used today is much more gentle than the traditional one. Just like a face roller, use after product is freshly applied.

These Toronto Pop-Ups are Perfect for Picking Up Holiday Beauty Gifts
Despite the fact that online shopping has become the go-to for many, discerning shoppers still appreciate a good old-fashioned brick and mortar space. And that’s why you’ll see a proliferation of pop-ups lately, which are well-edited places to pick up gifts that you might not find otherwise. Two that recently opened in Toronto and will remain throughout the month of December are Hammam Spa who set one up at Bayview Village, and Earth Luxe, which has so far been only available on-line. There’s also the MNDFL Green Beauty pop-up but it’s only open for one day this Thursday. It’s massive and worth it, though, trust.

Hammam Spa Pop-Up (Bayview Village)
Pop-ups can sometimes fall victim to looking a little unfinished around the edges, but when it comes this one, that statement couldn’t be farther from the truth. Featuring marbled walls and an artistic gold overhanging, the design elements here are actually pretty spectacular. It’s no surprise given that Hammam’s owner, Celine Tadrissi is married to renowned architect Antonio Tadrissi–some of his other projects include Drake’s Toronto and Miami condos.
On offer is a selection of products that can be found at the original Hammam Spa in downtown Toronto including brands like Dermalogica, SkinCeuticals and Tadrissi’s own recently launched line, Céla. There are also two mini changing rooms-turned-treatment rooms that offer a variety of peels and facials.
As for the location, the pop-up is an introduction of sorts as Hammam Spa is set to open a second full-size location at Bayview Village in April 2019. The new addition will be even larger than the King Street one and feature an extended list of services. In the mean time though, the pop-up acts as a primer to try out a few treatments and do some holiday shopping. Here are our top picks:

MNDFL Beauty (The Jam Factory)
Canada is home to a growing number of clean beauty brands from Kaia Naturals to Province Apothecary. So Graydon Moffat, founder of Graydon Skincare, decided to gather as many of them as possible at MNDFL Beauty —now its third year—as a way to showcase them all in one space.
Though preferably pop-ups last a little longer than 24 hours, this annual event is unfortunately a one-day affair. Over thirty vendors will set up shop at The Jam Factory in downtown Toronto and shoppers can descend from 3:30 pm to 7 pm. You’ll have to grab a ticket to gain access, but they actually won’t cost you anything unless you buy the VIP option. It’s only $10 and gets you a complimentary cocktail, snacks and a swag bag worth over $100.
If you’ve always wanted to meet the faces behind your favourite Canadian green beauty brands as well as discover some new ones, secure your spot now. Here are some of our favourites from this year’s vendors:
