hello! i'm about to turn 21, and i want to have my first drink. however, i don't know much about alcohol, and i don't want to get too drunk because i work the day after my birthday. what drinks do you suggest for someone who's new to drinking and only wants to get a little tipsy? (you're the only person i can think of to ask, my mom suggested beer but i've tried it and don't like the taste)

anon, happy almost birthday!! this is a very important question!

this is also a very personal question, in the sense that everyone’s taste is different. for a new drinker who doesn’t want to get drunk, we need to balance something tasty with the inherent pitfalls that a drink that doesn’t taste too alcoholic will embolden you to drink more than you should. (my recommendation for this is to go light on the booze and to only have one or two, and drink it with food).

let me make a caveat that i’ve been a vodka soda drinker for the last 15 years so my knowledge of cocktails is a bit outdated. i’m mostly going to stick to cocktails that are easy to make and don’t require fancy ingredients. please note the following drinks are in no particular order.

the classic screwdriver - vodka and orange juice. (i usually go half and half for the booze to juice ratio, but you’ll want to use more OJ). pros: orange juice is delicious. cons: don’t drink too many or you’ll hate orange juice for the next 10 years; doesn’t pair well with food.

optional: add a dash of cranberry juice to make it a sea breeze. or sub the cran for OJ for a vodka cran.

my old college standby - captain morgan spiced rum and coke. (the rum is sweet and so is the coke. you can be like me and use diet coke if you prefer. again, i go half and half for the ratio but you’ll want more coke. mix until you like the taste)

only try this if you like sweet drinks - UV flavored vodka (pick any flavor you want) and sprite. be careful with this one, because it will mess you up if you drink too many. i learned this the hard way in grad school

if you’re fake fancy and don’t like sweet drinks - cucumber basil vodka soda. (this is my go-to drink when i’m at a nice bar). at the bottom of a glass, muddle cucumber slices and a couple basil leaves. you can do this with the back of a wooden spoon. add the ice, vodka, and soda water. optional wedge of lime, or you can use lime flavored soda water.

you can also do this with other stuff if you don’t like cucumber and basil. for example: mint. or cucumber and thyme. watermelon! strawberries and basil

another option are frozen drinks, which are easy if you don’t mind shortcuts. in the frozen section of the supermarket you’ll find pre-packaged mixers that you can throw into the blender and just add alcohol. margaritas, pina coladas, and strawberry daquiries are the most common. my favorite are pina coladas, but you can’t go wrong with any of them!

all these sound awful, i’m a dessert person!!? bailey’s irish cream is here for you. serve over ice or mix with coffee. (or make a mudslide with equal parts vodka, bailey’s and coffee liqueur)
