HI! hope your day is treating you well, i’ve been interested in doomreed for some time but cape comics are sort of daunting to me just because there’s so much content and i really don’t know where to begin. what do you suggest? thank you!
STRAIGHT OUT THE GATE ill say, read [ "My Dinner With Doom" ] (this is a rly high-qual upload, open it up on desktop!)
It's a key issue oneshot with a lil bit of backstory retelling, featuring a private dinner that happens in the 00's - a good entrance point if you're curious about doomreed in summarization + generally speaking a Real Good Comic overall.
LONG POST INCOMING THIS IS A LONG POST / click readmore
the fantastic four are one of marvel's darling old founding teams so there is pretty much... endless archival, ongoing, multimedia and games content popping up all the time.
They are also kinda one of the rare teams where the growth of the characters is consistent? The kids are allowed to grow older and events from every major run are carried/referenced by the next author so if you want to do chronological there's a lot of incentive and fun stuff.
If you wanna dip your toes into the F4 as a concept, check out:
*the #1 issue of Fantastic Four By Waid & Wieringo (1997) *Mythos: Fantastic Four (2007) [ *The FF (1994) movie that is up for free on youtube!! ] *Fantastic Four (2022) by Ryan North as the current ongoing!
(Some) Singles centered on Doom/Doomreed:
*Fantastic Four (1961) Annual 2 is Doom's original backstory issue *Marvel Two-in-One (2017) by Zdarsky issue #11 & Annual #1 are both crazy good but they spoil big events/conclusions from previous runs if u care abt that!!! (My current fav fic came from these issues.) *Doomgate (novel) by Jeffrey Lang is a good option if you want something that is mostly prose, instead of a comic or movie
NOW BEFORE YOU JUMP AHEAD WITH ANYTHING I *am* following [ this reading guide ] which breaks down specific issues relevant to their relationship as a line through all the different authors over the years.
[ There's also this 2021 guide w/ a few other story/AU highlights! The author said u can send the blog questions and theyll answer too ]
The 'Modern era' (late 90s/00s/10s/Now) Starts with Waid and McDuffie's stuff. The latter wrote My Dinner with Doom!
If you're scared by all the names, don't be - when searching for the issues, just pay attention to the year, # number & author/artist creds.
What I'm reading/liveblogging rn is Hickman's Secret wars era, generally regarded as yaoi ketamine; It's a good epic narrative entrance point if you want to jump into it, and it eventually led into this huge marvel event that changed the multiverse and even brought miles morales into the main timeline, so its BIG and it happened in multiple books - the best way to go about it is;
Pre-hickman:
Fantastic Four (1961) #551 #552 #553 ➡️ (these introduce main ideas we will touch again in secret wars)
Fantastic Four (1961) #558 to #562 ➡️
Doom appears in these too, first/last issues more heavily. Stuff here will be ref'd during the next era.
If you're having fun and want to keep reading you can! Just know that the next storyarc has gathered a largely mixed response bc..... its Millar going hammywammy....... not that necessary.......
anyway when you see hickmans name in the cover STOP and
Jump to actual Hickman secret wars era:
Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman: The complete collection➡️
(optional, side plot) If you like Val + Doom, read specifically; *Fantastic Four (2014) #3 & #5 + Fantastic Four Annual (2014) #1 *Agent of Asgard #6 & #7 *Avengers World (2014) #15 & #16
New Avengers (2013) ➡️ check issues on picture, or, if you're a completionist, look for 'Avengers by Jonathan Hickman; complete collection' and skim for the doom/reed relevant bits. There's a lot of characters here but this is a buildup to the big secret wars. Secret Wars (2015) ➡️ (All issues!) Infamous Iron Man (2016) ➡️bendis' doom writing is not very good but hang in there because right after him: Marvel 2-In-One (2017) ➡️ (All issues!) is a banger. Yaoi btw.
You can basically read all the future/past ones as listed, or starting from the beginning of that author's period without worrying, bc they aren't as indebted to each other storywise.
You can also start somewhere else if you want or check out other single issues on the reading guides; It's not a crime! There's a lot of stuff with different takes and genres, I'm slowly chipping away at the secret wars era bc its just very thick and like a serious television drama attempt, except its also insanely funny sometimes.
(I'm still making my way through it so that's what I have at the moment!)

Weekend Top Ten #628
Top Ten Fox Marvel Movies – Part One!
Hey guys! I was totally stumped about what to write this week, and started planning – I’m not kidding – three or four different lists. I don’t remember the last time that happened.
One of the problems was that I’ve been really pressed for time – busy with work, busy in the evenings, also trying to prioritise writing my book – so didn’t really get started on this list until I didn’t have enough time to write it (which is one of the reasons it’s going up on a Saturday evening instead of the morning as usual). And a lot of the ideas I had that I really liked needed a bit more rumination and explanation – basically, more waffle – so I didn’t want to do them till I had time.
And then I had a brainwave! You see, I have rather foolishly decided to attempt (crucial word that: attempt) to rewatch all of the Fox Marvel movies ahead of the release of Deadpool and Wolverine this summer. Why? Well, because it appears from the images and trailer that this film is going to be rather metatextually discussing the demise of the Fox Marvel universe (or “universes”, plural, I suppose; there’s no indication that any of their franchises share one overall world). In the trailer, it looks like there’s a partially submerged 20th Century Fox logo in the ground, Ozymandias-style; and we know that several characters from the Fox X-Men movies are going to show up (outside the regular Deadpool cast we’ve seen Wolverine and Pyro), and characters from the other Marvel properties Fox had the rights to are heavily rumoured to be putting in appearances (Elektra, for instance). So it’s going to be – I imagine – at least in part a two-fingered farewell to an entire era of filmmaking that stretches from the first X-Men movie in 2000 to, I guess, The New Mutants in 2020 (technically released by Disney after the Fox acquisition but produced prior), taking in detours featuring Daredevil, Elektra, and two different incarnations of the Fantastic Four.
Anyway! Like I said, I’m gonna rewatch them all. But wouldn’t it be interesting if I ranked them now, from memory, and then again, after I’ve seen them all? Will anything change? Will some of them have slipped down my mental chart, age withering them in the face of more nuanced and exciting interpretations of superhero stories? Or have some of them actually improved over time, their handling of storylines or characters actually seeming more entertaining or interesting than some of the dreck that’s slid down the cinema chute wearing a tattered cape and being directed by Zack Snyder?
(that felt mean, sorry)
So that’s what I’m going to do – my first intentional two-part Top Ten, I think. One now, one later – probably (hopefully) near D&W’s release; what I remember of the Fox Marvel movies, and then what I think upon a rewatch. Now, by my reckoning, this is a total of eighteen films, most of which I’ve seen before, and even disregarding those I’ve not seen, includes at least two that are utterly shite. But it does mean I get to see Deadpool call Cable “One-Eyed Willy” again.
See you in July!
Logan (2017): a languid, sepia-tinged meditation on mortality, failure, and legacy; it’s the superhero equivalent of Unforgiven, a melancholy Western starring a repentant man with a history of violence. As a swansong to one of the most iconic comic book roles of all time, it gives Jackman plenty to chew on, and in his relationships both with a deteriorating Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart on Awards-worthy form) and especially his equally-feral daughter Laura (Dafne Keen) it shows Logan’s heart and empathy underneath his violent exterior. Earns its R-rating. A masterpiece, and easily – easily – one of the greatest comic-book movies of all time.
X2 (2003): taking the pieces placed on the board in the first film, this one really ups the stakes and was the first time one of these “modern” superhero movies really felt like an epic comic-book arc. Morally complex and offering teasing revelations about central characters, it also has some truly incredible visuals, such as Nightcrawler’s opening attack on the White House.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014): uniting the two strands of Fox’s X-Movies, we have a post-apocalyptic future rendered in stunning fashion with shape-changing Sentinels hunting our beleaguered heroes, before Logan journeys into the past to change things. Features an incredible performance by Peter Dinklage, some tremendous action scenes (Quicksilver rescuing Magneto!) and an impressive ripped Hugh Jackman.
Deadpool (2016): no one was sure it would work, taking a cult comic character, giving him his own movie, and allowing him to be filthy, violent, and decidedly R-rated, throwing the middle-finger up at not just Fox’s comic-book universe but all superhero films and, well, all popular culture. But Ryan Reynolds’ perfect performance and some truly impressive action sequences turned it into the X-Men’s biggest hit.
Deadpool 2 (2018): just a gnat’s wing under its predecessor as it lacks the first films taut structure, meandering through a few plot dead-ends before tying it back together in a series of incredible sequences (the choir singing “oh holy shitballs” during the fight with Juggernaut is hilarious).
X-Men (2000): the first film does an incredible job of creating the whole X-Men universe, using both the world-weary Logan and the naïve Rogue as the audience’s eyes, introducing us all to the concept of mutants, the X-Men, the Brotherhood of Mutants, and the nuanced, dynamic rivalry between Xavier and Magneto. Jackman burns through the screen with the white-hot intensity of a supernova, eclipsing almost everyone else, although McKellen gets to chew scenery like he’s not eaten in a week.
X-Men: First Class (2011): after the initial X-Men films seemed burned out with the lacklustre (to say the least) The Last Stand and Origins (see below!), Matthew Vaughn gave the whole concept a period-centric shot in the arm. Younger, vibrant versions of our main characters popped up in the swinging sixties, with a flair that echoed the Bond movies that exist only in our heads, a plot that roped in contemporary geo-politics, and one of the greatest cameos in history. Along with a whole heap of continuity errors if you try to marry it with all the other films, which they decided to do anyway.
Fantastic Four (2005): oh look, not an X-Men film. This film is bright, colourful, and fun, a world away from the sombre stylings of Patrick Stewart and co. There’s a sunny optimism to it; it’s more redolent of family films of the era, with a largely young, attractive cast (including a pre-Cap Chris Evans as the Human Torch!). Lightweight, sure, but it’s not a bad time at the flicks.
Daredevil (2003): somewhat (okay, entirely) eclipsed by the Netflix series starring Charlie Cox, this was the first of Ben Affleck’s two ill-fated attempts to be a dark avenging superhero of the night. His Matt Murdock is quippy in the day and dressed in skintight leather at night, the fight scenes drenched in both rain and post-Matrix slow-mo. Does have a great kissing-in-the-rain sequence to sit alongside Spider-Man’s, though.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): yeah, we’re really scraping the barrel now of the ones I’ve seen. This just edged out Dark Phoenix by a whisper, but is still mostly a disappointing mish-mash of different stories, making Logan a very reactive character as it skims full-speed through aspects of his origin and introduces us to tons of mutants who are then summarily killed. Still, it gave us Reynolds’ first outing as a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson, and mutants played by Will I. Am and the Mancunian hobbit.

Fire Fly With Me
“I was the color red in a world full of black and white.”
RIP Windham Rotunda “Bray Wyatt” 1987-2023
This has been a tragic week for wrestling. Yesterday, Terry Funk, a 79 year old second generation legend died. Funk had a 52 year career spanning practically every promotion and continent. A first ballot Hall of Famer in every sense of the word, who even had a little sideline in Hollywood; Terry Funk was an old man who had done everything you can possibly do in wrestling and then much more. He accomplished his goals.
Today, a third generation wrestler, the son of Mike Rotunda, grandson of Blackjack Mulligan, and nephew of Barry Windham; Bray Wyatt passed away. After an electric return last fall it felt like there was either an unclear plan for his run or a creative difference between the performer and management. Following a match that was a neon splattered gimmicky promotion to sell Mountain Dew at the January Royal Rumble; Bray Wyatt once again took his leave. Rumors swirled that there were creative differences, Bray having personal issues, and even one of a prolonged illness. Today Bray Wyatt passed away of a heart attack caused by COVID-19 exacerbating existing heart problems.
Bray Wyatt, and another legacy talent - the son of Mr. Perfect, Joe Hennig made their WWE debut with the very unfortunate and puzzling ring names of “Husky Harris” and “Michael McGillicutty” respectively. The pair floundered after debuting in a big angle and returned to the developmental territories for repackaging.
Rotunda created the character Bray Wyatt, a sort of backwoods cultist who harkened to the character Max Cady in Cape Fear; portrayed by both Robert Mitchum and Robert DeNiro on screen. Wyatt also paid homage in his presentation to another Mitchum character, Reverend Harry Powell from Night of the Hunter. The character was awash in cinema; with his followers reminded attentive fans of The Last House on the Left and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Despite some fans initially heckling the repackaging with chants of “Husky Harris” when he debuted; Wyatt made a splash quickly and very soon erased the perception left by his failed first WWE tenure. Before he even had spent a year in the organization he was poised as the next generation’s supernatural, eerie badass - an elder millennial replacement to the aging, semi-retired Undertaker.
His first Wrestlemania match could not have been bigger for the character. One on one with John Cena at the 30th WrestleMania he was poised to go to the next level. Everything pointed to a Wyatt victory; after defeating The Rock at the most bought WrestleMania ever the previous year it was clear Cena was winding down and leaving his prime. He had one foot out the door for a film and television career and many fans who had grown up cheering his white meat kid friendly act had outgrown Cena.
WrestleMania 30 was held in New Orleans, clearly a town that has more in common with Wyatt than Cena. After an epic entrance with a band of plague doctors playing him to the ring as the crowd held their phone flashlights high the audience sang “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” cheering Wyatt to victory. Inexplicably, Cena defeated the rising star clean in the middle of the ring. This did nothing for Cena’s already sky high profile but did not seem to take all the wind out of Wyatt’s sails.
Wyatt’s popularity persisted and he marched towards a WrestleMania match with The Undertaker the next year. The Undertaker’s WrestleMania win streak had ended the year prior and if there ever was a moment for a changing of the guard it was their match at WrestleMania 31. Instead of holding that torch aloft, Bray looked up at the lights of Levi’s Stadium as The Undertaker pinned him with his signature Tombstone piledriver.
This was not the final resting place of the Wyatt character though, he captured the WWE title in 2017. This unfortunately led to a series of comically awful matches with Randy Orton and a baffling feud and then pairing with Matt Hardy.
It was clear that the character had been derailed by 2018. Wyatt was taken off TV for a prolonged absence; but soon vignettes featuring a corrupted children’s television show of evil puppets began to air. These led to Wyatt returning in a brilliant dual character; the sweater clad children’s entertainer Bray Wyatt; who hosted his Firefly Fun House; an homage to Mr Rogers’s Neighborhood, Blues Clues, and especially Pee Wee’s Playhouse (eerily hosted by the recently passed Paul Reubens.) The show would feature the puppets being sadistic to each other, Bray barely containing his rage and bitterness beneath the calm, sweater-clad veneer he put forth. Bray would work through his personal issues via bizarre skits with his cast of demented puppets. Huskus the Pig Boy was an effigy to his resentments about his debut; Mercy the Buzzard was a sly homage to Dan Spivey’s short lived Waylon Mercy character who was an antecedent of Wyatt. A devil horned muppet version of WWE chairman Vince McMahon would guest on the show.
The sweater barely strait jacked his other personality, The Fiend. A psychopath in a human flesh mask bent on torture and cruelty who could not be stopped inside the ring. The Fiend adopted Mankind’s Mandible Claw as a finisher, itself a reference to killer Samuel Sheppard.
Wyatt’s new character was unstoppable and took the WWE by storm capturing the title and minting money for the company on their merchandise site. Wyatt was back and living up to the promise of his debut. He was headed towards the Undertaker level.
Then in February 2020, in a widely derided decision, The Fiend was soundly beaten by ancient, creaky Goldberg to build to a later canceled match against Roman Reigns that was violently rejected by fans.
In March 2020 the world shut down due to the pandemic. Fans could not attend WrestleMania and we were in for a bizarre and surreal show in an empty soundstage. Wyatt was set for a rematch with John Cena for the show initially set for a football stadium in sunny Tampa Bay. If ever there was a moment for the kind of wrestler that has guitar playing plague doctors set the stage for his entrance, it was now.
The match with Cena was to be a “Firefly Fun House” match. Nobody knew what this entailed. What we were about to witness, is in my opinion, the greatest match of the 2020s. The Firefly Fun House is a beautiful expression of a “post wrestling” era we live in. By 2020 most fans who have been following wrestling for decades pay cursory attention to the modern performers and their storylines and matches in the ring. Backstage drama, old timers sniping at each other on podcasts, fan nostalgia and review shows, and twitter beefs had supplanted modern wrestling to most fans.
In a cinematic match, a new wrestling format that would become a trope of the pandemic era, Bray and the WWE created a surrealist nightmare that had more in common with a David Lynch film than a grappling bout.
Bray had an axe to grind with Cena for his disappointment when Cena poured water on his burning hot career six years earlier in New Orleans. Ever the psychological sadist, Bray crafted a dream logic nightmare for Cena to enter that makes him confront his failures, insecurities, and disappointments just like Wyatt had for Cena-related setbacks going back all the way to 2010.
It also takes us on a tour of wrestling history; using beloved totems of different generations like the “Big Blue” cage and the Smackdown fist to play mind games with us, the fans about why we love this stuff and why we care.
Cena’s iconic theme plays before the empty soundstage to an eerie and uncomfortable silence that does not belong with it. It feels so alien and wrong without explosive dueling boos and cheers. Cena walks out on the stage as a broken montage of WrestleMania 1 clips cut to Bray inside the Firefly Fun House, giving a Rod Serling introduction to the insecurities made manifest within.
“You’re about to face your most dangerous opponent yet, yourself,” Wyatt threatens with unseemly glee. Wyatt departs and Rambling Rabbit points Cena towards Wyatt’s whereabouts.
Cena enters a black room and looks around briefly until a puppet McMahon lays down a gauntlet similar to what he did for Cena way back in 2002. Cena begins on an A Christmas Carol like visit of the ghost of Cena’s past. Wyatt stages a reenactment of Cena’s debut loss to Kurt Angle; which a much older Cena responds to in his rookie ring gear. In keeping with the dream logic Cena is unable to hit Wyatt as he mocks him with a cartoon soundboard and a series of verbal potshots.
Cut to the iconic introduction of Saturday Night’s Main Event in its heyday complete with the classic “Obsession” by Animotion. Wyatt cuts a standard shouting 80s promo behind the big blue cage, introducing Cena as “Johnny Largemeat” - Cena cannot stop curling dumbells and starts maniacally thrashing them until he loses control of his arms.
We then flash to Cena reprising his early freestyle rapper character, who is cursed with a strange form of mutism where he can only speak in raps. Cena attempts to turn the tables on Wyatt verbally; but Wyatt quickly rebuttals him and changes the narrative to remind Cena of those he stepped on climbing the ranks and that it’s lonely at the top. Cena still cannot physically attack Wyatt, and his attempt gets him knocked out.
Cut to a sermonizing Wyatt, regressing to his 2014 form, revisiting the heartbreak of WrestleMania 30.
Wyatt taunts Cena to hit him with a chair, he’s unable to.
Cut to Cena and Wyatt in nWo t shirts and black jeans, a visual even more bizarre than Cena’s grand WrestleMania entrance on an empty soundstage. Cena can finally attack Wyatt and tackles him and brutalizes him with punches, until Wyatt is replaced with the Huskus puppet.
The Fiend appears in the ring, materializing behind Cena to deliver the mandible claw. The Fiend pins Cena as we show sweater Bray gleefully counting the pinfall, Did Bray right his wrong? Was Cena swayed to some sort of dark side - there are moments where it feels like Cena has become the alternate Dale Coopers from Twin Peaks The Return with character flourishes akin to the evil “Coop” and the strange, simple “Dougie.”
There is so much packed into the editing and storytelling of this match that I could not possibly do it justice. When everything has been done that you can do in a wrestling match - what’s next? Instead of a wrestling match where you wrestle, hold a “wrestling match” about wrestling.
Elvis Costello once quipped that writing about music was like dancing about architecture. I assume he doesn’t own any 33 1/3 books.
A wrestling match that replaces contesting wrestling with being about wrestling was perfect for the turn of this new decade and many years of fan ennui. At a time where fans are more curious about all the things that happen outside of the squared circle that lead to the action inside it, it fulfilled a need we didn’t know we had. I recommend giving this, alongside the excellent Wyatt Family vs The Shield bout from Elimination Chamber 2014 where you also see Wyatt’s partner Luke Harper, aka Brodie Lee in action. Wyatt is pre deceased by Harper.
Sadly, that was about the peak of The Fiend character. An ill fated partnership with Alexa Bliss that never quite struck the right tone was a miss during the empty arena era. At WrestleMania 37, the first show in a year before live fans, The Fiend lost to Randy Orton in a match that was widely panned. The two third generation stars had a toxic anti-chemistry with each other and WWE kept returning to the pairing for reasons that feel like sabotage in hindsight. Wyatt was off TV for several months and shockingly released outright in the summer of that year.
After a prolonged absence and various hints at a comeback; Wyatt returned last fall at Extreme Rules in a thrilling segment to an explosive response. Sadly, the creative direction for Wyatt never found its legs. Behind the scenes it’s unclear if there was a creative struggle before Wyatt fell ill.
Bray was supposed to be the next Undertaker, and he wasn’t. He was the first, the only, and the inimitable Bray Wyatt. A backwoods preacher of doom and mayhem, a sadistic Ed Gein type killer, and a smiling, laughing, but unhinged children’s TV host. Already having demonstrated a knack for reinvention, Bray could have been many more things. He will have to be those in the imagination of the fans now.
What he did leave was important and memorable. I believe he had a Hall of Fame career, and though that claim may be controversial and contentious; that is the nature of the Wyatt character. He may have been polarizing, but everyone had an opinion on him, and not indifference; and I know wrestling fans universally feel like wrestling is suffering a tremendous loss. Even if he didn’t do something that connected with your tastes, he had something in his bag of tricks that would some day.
So smash your flashlight button one last time for Bray Wyatt and hold it up high. As the Undertaker himself would say, Rest In Peace.

'Christopher Nolan's best movies, from Inception to The Dark Knight, are also among the best movies of the 21st century, which proves how essential he is to understand blockbusters today.
The British-American director has been working behind the cameras for over thirty years, delivering some mind-bending, eye-catching work. Nolan's movies have a common ability to always surprise viewers, usually thanks to time-twisting stories that are never what they seem.
That's also true for his latest movie Oppenheimer, an unexpected box-office hit (blame the Barbenheimer phenomenon) that has arguably been the most talked-about of his career to date, even ahead of his excellent Batman trilogy. It's also one of this year's biggest awards contenders, with enough Oscar buzz to potentially secure the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The three-hour biopic about the life of J Robert Oppenheimer became Nolan's third highest-grossing movie ever, behind only The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It's very close now to becoming Nolan's third billion-dollar movie.
But enough about the box office. The only ranking we care about is the quality of the movies...
10. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Rounding out Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy was never going to be easy post-The Dark Knight, and sadly, The Dark Knight Rises is more remembered for the controversy surrounding Tom Hardy's vocals than the movie itself.
Still, with standout performances from the likes of Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway, there are worse Batman movies out there.
Also, a near-perfect ending closes the door on Christian Bale's Dark Knight – hopefully not to return for the DCU's Multiverse.
7. Inception (2010)
Boasting Nolan's most A-list cast yet, Inception was like nothing we'd seen before when it debuted in 2010. Helping boost Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career, he plays brilliantly alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as the tragic Dom Cobb.
This Bond-inspired heist movie delves into the psyche of Cillian Murphy's mark, and as we go deeper, each layer is richer than the last.
Delivering one of the most debated endings of all time, we're still talking about whether that totem stopped spinning.
6. Dunkirk (2017)
Remembered alongside war epics like Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk is probably the least Nolan movie in his catalogue.
Hitting the beaches of World War II, Dunkirk follows the famed 1940 evacuation on land, sea, and by air in three different timelines that offer up their own unique perspective.
Doing away with your typical tropes of a war movie, Dunkirk isn't afraid to get straight in there and hammer home the horrors of the war.
5. Batman Begins (2005)
Putting Christian Bale in the cape and cowl for the first time, Batman Begins ended the run of schlocky comic book movies of the early '00s to redefine the superhero origin story.
Restoring faith in the Dark Knight following Batman & Robin was no easy feat, but with Bale's Bruce Wayne channelling the darkness of Batman: The Animated Series, it defied expectations.
Also, opting for Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul as the villain instead of the Joker was a stroke of genius.
4. Oppenheimer (2023)
Combining the real-life history of Dunkirk and the theoretical physics of Tenet, Oppenheimer feels like the movie Nolan was always building to.
A dense three-hour biopic about J Robert Oppenheimer, aka "the father of the atomic bomb", it's a thrilling and thought-provoking watch with a never-better Cillian Murphy at its centre.
The movie's different timelines can be a bit confusing and Jean Tatlock's storyline is a bit questionable, but this is one of Nolan's best works.
Once watched, never forgotten.
1. The Dark Knight (2008)
Arguably the best comic book movie of all time and one of the best movies of all time, even superhero haters are hard-pushed not to be wowed by The Dark Knight.
Christian Bale is joined by Aaron Eckhart showing the softer side of the villainous Two-Face, while Gary Oldman's Jim Gordon is another highlight.
Of course, who could forget Heath Ledger's legendary performance as the Joker? For the opening bank heist alone, Ledger more than earned his posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.'

1. Conversion therapy to be illegal in Canada in 30 days
The federal legislation to ban conversion therapy practices in Canada received royal assent on Wednesday, meaning the bill is now a law, but the new criminal offences won’t be in effect until early January.
Per the coming-into-force provisions of the bill, the four new Criminal Code violations will be enacted 30 days after it received royal assent, which will be Jan. 7. That means that in a month it will be illegal to subject someone of any age, consenting or not, to so-called conversion therapy.
2. Looted Gilgamesh tablet returns to Iraq in formal ceremony
A small clay tablet dating back 3,500 years and bearing a portion of the Epic of Gilgamesh that was looted from an Iraqi museum 30 years ago and recently recovered from the United States formally returned to Iraq on Tuesday.
The $1.7 million cuneiform tablet, known as the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet, is one of the world’s oldest surviving works of literature and one of the oldest religious texts. It was found in 1853 as part of a 12-tablet collection in the rubble of the library of Assyrian King Assur Banipal.
3. Plastic surgeon performs 37,000 free surgeries for kids born with cleft lips — they can now finally smile
Plastic surgeon Dr Subodh Kumar Singh struggled in his childhood days to become a doctor; he now offers free corrective surgeries to kids born with cleft lip/palate.
From 2002, Dr Singh began a free treatment week to mark his father’s death anniversary. He started performing corrective cleft surgeries from 2003-04, became a part of The Smile Train project (globally the largest cleft surgery-focused organisation). “We set a target of 2,500 cleft surgeries by December 2005. The Smile Train India team, while considering our target too ambitious, asked us to go for just 500 free surgeries by 2005-end. We crossed that figure by 2004-end and went beyond 2,500 by the following year end,” says Dr Subodh. “Since 2008-09, we annually perform 4,000-plus free cleft surgeries under this initiative.”
Professional Photographers of America are huge donors to this cause. You can donate to him here .
4. Henry Cavill says his dog saved his mental health
"Superman" star Henry Cavill has revealed that not all heroes wear capes -- some just have fluffy paws. "He really is (my best friend)," the 38-year-old told Kelly as he stroked Kal. "We go everywhere together. He's 8 now and he has saved my emotional, psychological bacon plenty of times."
5. California tackles food waste with largest recycling program in US
California will soon enact the largest mandatory residential food waste recycling program in the US in January, an effort designed to dramatically cut down on organic waste in landfills and reduce the state’s methane emissions.
“This is the biggest change to trash since recycling started in the 1980s,” said Rachel Wagoner, the director of the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery.
6. Starbucks workers vote to unionize in Buffalo, New York
Starbucks workers at a store in Buffalo, New York, voted to unionize on Thursday, a first for the 50-year-old coffee retailer in the U.S. and the latest sign that the labor movement is stirring after decades of decline.
Lets go Buffalo, clap clap, clap clap clap
7. Chile legalises same-sex marriage
Chile has legalised same-sex marriage following a 21-8 vote in the Senate. Later, the House also passed the bill in an 82-20 vote. The bill was introduced in 2017 by former president Michelle Bachelet, who currently serves as Human Rights chief at the UN.
President Sebastián Piñera, a conservative billionaire, shocked many with his unexpected push in favour of the idea.

A LONG DARK KNIGHT
The Batman--Time for yet another retelling of the tale of the poor little rich boy, orphaned by criminals, who dresses up as a bat and deploys gadgetry to fight crime. This version, we're assured, is "dark." Not colorful and campy, like the '60s-era TV show; not whimsical, like the Tim Burton series of the '80s and '90s; not epic and Wagnerian, like the more recent series featuring the laryngitic Christian Bale. Strange how durable and flexible this silly myth has proven.
This one is indeed dark, both literally and thematically; dim and shadowy and focused on hidden corruption. Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he wrote with Peter Craig, The Batman is set early in the career of Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) as the Caped Crusader. His costume, gizmos and vehicles seem like works in progress, and his Gotham police ally James Gordon (Jeffery Wright) is a Lieutenant, not yet the Commissioner.
Gordon and The Batman are looking for The Riddler (Paul Dano), who is bumping off prominent members of Gotham's law enforcement community, and whose cryptic messages to our hero suggest that he's trying to drag some of the city's slimy secrets into the light. Gotham underworld figures like Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell, buried in makeup) are involved, as is young Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), who's investigating the disappearance of her girlfriend. The lithe, acrobatic Selina dresses in cat-like gear and has an apartment full of cats; she is, you might say, a cat woman.
There's a lot to like about the movie. Grieg Fraser's cinematography has a dank and gloomy beauty, and seeing The Batman recoil in fear when he comes to the edge of a tall building or miscalculate a descent and clip himself painfully against an overpass is a highly agreeable counter to the parkour-style effortlessness of so many contemporary action heroes.
The actors are strong, too. Pattinson is low-key, but he has the same sallow, Byronic glamour he's shown in other roles, and he's sympathetic, as is Wright, and Andy Serkis as a fretful Alfred. Turturro and Farrell bring a realistic feel to their mobster parts, and Peter Sarsgaard makes his shady D.A. squirmy and weaselly but also pitiable.
The standouts are Dano and Kravitz; Dano's rather squalid take on the Riddler turns truly scary when he starts stretching his words out into deep, indignant bellows. He seems far less like a movie supervillain and more like the pathetic, yet more terrifying, attempts of real-life crazies to emulate a supervillain (as in Aurora, Colorado). Kravitz brings the movie a much-needed breeze of brisk but breathable fresh air. She's the audience surrogate in the film; despite her feats of derring-do she comes across as more sensible and relatable than anyone else.
Against all of these merits, The Batman is too long. It's way too freakin' long. It's nearly three hours of above-average moviemaking of its kind, but three hours is a heavy dose of shadows and fog. The brooding atmosphere suggests that we're in for devastating, morally challenging revelations, but what we get, while coherent, isn't especially surprising. And then, just as we seem to have gotten to the bottom of the case, the movie tacks on a blowed-up-real-good disaster finale that feels jarringly out of tune with the more intimate crime-story flavor of what has gone before.
I thought that superhero pictures were starting to cure themselves of their straining need to pile on climax after climax, seemingly in frantic fear that audiences will feel that they haven't been given enough for their money. The Batman is a step backward in this regard.
It occurred to me that The Batman feels, in atmosphere and pretensions, exactly like what was so sublimely spoofed by 2017's The Lego Batman Movie. It isn't every day that the target of a parody shows up five years after the parody itself.

TAYLOR SWIFT STYLE — GRAMMYS
Sunday would have marked Taylor's return to the Grammys after a four year absence. Since originally writing this predictions post, Taylor has confirmed that she will not be performing nor attending tomorrow’s ceremony.
I put it as a vote to you all on Instagram if you would still be interested in seeing my predictions post. ‘Yes’ was a landslide winner — so thank you for that.
Let’s take this as an opportunity to dream to think about what would have been.
Typically, Taylor has stuck to metallics and neutrals in her right previous appearances at the Grammys. In support of 1989 (2015-16) she diverged into vibrant colour. To split the odds, I went with two colourful pieces and two more sparkly options.Let's get down to details.
Atelier Versace Fall 2017 Couture Dipping into a slightly older collection for this beautifully embroidered, rose gold blazer and pant set. Taylor tested out a non-gown silhouette at the 2016 Grammys (paying ode to that era's distinctive crop top style with a bandeau top and full skirt). I can absolutely see a slicked, wet low pony and a dark bloody lip (similar to runway) styled with this set for an intimidatingly suited up feminine look. I would have chills.
Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2020 I would start crying and never stop. This would be an epically elegant Blondes In Yellow™ moment. The material and cut are so beautiful and svelte. Couldn't you just imagine an updo with huge emerald-cut citrine earrings paired with this and perhaps some gold sandals?
Georges Hobeika Fall 2019 Couture I'm dying for a cape-like moment from Taylor and think that she's primed for one. This juicy raspberry colour would be stunning on her and I hope if it's worn the sense to have her hair up, black onyx ear climbers on, and a glossy berry lip is styled with it.
Oscar de la Renta Spring 2020 This is the last OdlR gown I'm going to predict for a looooong time. This look combines the colour of her Gucci gown from the 2014 Gramys with the flowing plisse skirt of her Kaufmanfranco look at the 2013 Grammys (+ check the runner ups below for yet another blast to the Grammys past). This is very classic metallic-loving, princess-cut classic Taylor at her best.
To see all my runner-up choices, subscribe to the TSS Exclusives tier on the TSS Patreon.
What do you think of my choices? Who do you hope Taylor wears for her big return to the Grammys?

i started thinking about that gay bastard oc of yours. platano. can u tell me about him
omg u wer thinkgin about platano..... mr banana man... mr 4011. i am obsessed with the banana code srry i just got back from work (it was good :-D)
any way. um. im going below the cut. he kidnaps people and he murders people and i hate him because he’s also a massive weeb so. hm
HISTORY OF PLATANO... yea his name is spanish for banana
his father, pablo, will probably get a name change someday but i literally never think of his father since the only thing he did in platano’s backstory was disappear
since platano’s world has characters based off like. fruits and vegetables (there aren’t really any limit to what the characters are based off of. it was in my lazy google translate name phase so we have like... a gay character named arcenciel who becomes dadlike through my powerful canon-changing touch. also arcenciel wears the colors of the rainbow as often as he can i haven’t figured out a good design for him since i’m not used to using more than 5 colors. he also owns a hat factory)
i think arcenciel and platano are friends they met when platano was like. 17 probably and arcenciel would be around uhhhhh ummmmmmm 21??? idk man but in canon he’s probably around 30 . yes i m saying “in canon” because i wrote a really dumb and horrible story back in 2018 arcenciel used to have HUGE internalized homophobia and i turned that into a running joke and i dislike that so that’s a reason why i’m not sharing the fun little story i wrote for my friends
(the best part of that story is when arcenciel threw his light-up rainbow heelies at platano, thus starting the boss fight which the main cast LOST.)
ok back to the topic at hand. platano.
i have a whole doc named platano where i just wrote drabbles about him so i’m going to summarize them
the first one was his friend, percisi (my only cishet oc he’s very short and very aggressive while also dressing in a soft-colored turtleneck since he’s based off of peaches) using a misunderstood form of satanism to summon satan. guess what percisi and platano summoned satan for. it was a manga update! wow
i won’t say the mangas name it was an inside joke
so platano was like “hey satan can i have this manga now please please” and satan went “sure just kill people for me”
that determined platanos job for the next 7 or so years <3 wonderful.
(it was basically me writing a backstory for a scene to happen in the main writing i wrote for my friends. he killed someone because someone else in the building was trying to summon satan. very confusing but okay i guess.)
i think right after that i wrote about platano meeting his boyfriend, sage, for the first time. i have horribly mixed feelings about their relationship since it’s very. Hm.
so platano kidnaps people to watch anime with him because all his friends left him and his best friend, mangue, is too busy being a dictator over the Land of the Fruits. i shit you not fruits oppressed the vegetables. i wrote that dynamic between the two because i was learning about the revolutionary war in US History. something like that at least
(the Land of the Fruits is not the official name)
on the topic of kidnapping people. guess who his favorite person was. sage. it was sage. so he tried to take sage often but they probably discussed Proper boundaries since everyone else tried to run away. hmm i am now going to write a bit right now
“Platano,” Sage started. “Why do you keep kidnapping me? It’s rude and I hate it.”
“What else am I supposed to do?” The yellow-haired fool leaned on his sword, digging the tip deeper into the ground.
“ASK ME IF I WANT TO HANG OUT??”
“I can do that?”
“You keep making my dads worried.” Sage looked around the area, fidgeting with his hands.
“Oh. Okay. Want to hang out? Watch some anime?” Platano paused for a moment, but managed to say “Maybe kiss?” before Sage got to answer.
“I- KISS??? We can watch anime together. We can go now.”
Sage ushered Platano through a portal as fast as he could.
His dads were never worried.
hmmm maybe that’s alright idk i’m a little tired so it’s probably a little out of character. sage probably isn’t that loud but i think it was trying to be the dynamic of “oh, we’re not dating” when they kiss every sunday at 5 pm by a romantic river scene
he’s a character who is, at his very core, horrible and bad. he is portrayed in a way i DESPISE but i’m too lazy to correct it. his interest in sage actually started with me going “hmm i think platano would draw sage like this” then sauce giving me fun facts about his oc, sage, yea sage is sauce’s oc <3 epic win . so sauce gave me fun facts about sage and i was like “time to doodle these in platanos ‘art style’” when in reality it’s just the mockery of people just getting into an anime art style, with the chin so pointy it could cut a cake
i might reread my old writing from 2018. i gotta agree with the judges for that year i did not write very well
it mightve actually been made in 2017 which would be FUCKIN CRAZY im gonna check rn
yea it was started in 2018. february 14th... huh . finished it completely in june of that year it was 41 pages total and it’s not even double spaced how did i write something without double spacing it
OH MY GOD BOB IS GOING TO HIJACK THIS RANT JUST FOR A LITTLE
so bob is a fluffy little anthro cloud with a grey top hat and bowtie. he is amazing. i love bob. bob is another one of sauce’s character and mangue (mentioned earlier) was made by my friend jamie
(you can always ask for their tumblrs but i’d ask them if its okay to share their tumblrs. i might just look at them and reblog their stuff cuz i like their art!!! maybe jamie posted a drawing she made recently on her blog but tbh i don’t think she would she’s more of a twitter user)
ok so im skimming thru UMG which is the story it stands for “Universe of Magic Gardens” and it was originally made for a prank on ponytown so people would go “what’s UMG” and my friends and i would be like “ur mom gay xDDDDDD” or something like that . horrible but i’m glad i’ve changed from . that.
here’s a bit i actually like AKLJFISJFIO
“What the actual FUCK, Ilkie?!” Arcenciel cringed in fear. “Put it back- it’s too ugly.” He pointed at Platano, whose arms were crossed.
why is it bolded. anyway.
i just saw a part where eau used y’all... water cowboy moments <333 i really need to make refs for all of those old characters. all of my umg-related characters have to be my oldest-living ocs.
i cant believe this is making me genuinely reread my old writing just to go “WJHFSIDAJKSFIOJ WTF????”
some of the lines on it sound like something you would hear on like. a school bus or somethin
looking at umg like “wtf how did i add so much Meat to this writing” bc most of my writing now is mostly quotations to progress the story (like the quickie i wrote earlier. i could add meat to it but im tired lol)
OK THIS IS MORE GENERAL BUT MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS WAS WRITING HAIKUS FOR PORTALS. after you visit a place enough times it’s kind of just an instinct to open a portal there so you don’t have to recite a haiku
uhh ok here’s another bit becuase im feeling like living la vida loca. ur biggest regret should be “can you tell me about him” by this point bc i’ve written too much to go back now
He landed on his face once he was outside of the hat. Meko quickly walked over to the guest room, opened the Portals for Dummies book, and flipped to a page. It looked devious.
“Banana, mango,
Each tasting amazingly.
A taste of evil.”
Meko did the dance on the page, it consisted of something that looks like it’s from an anime. A portal opened, the familiar scent of bananas and mangoes coming from it. With some hesitation, Meko stepped in. He quickly made it so only his head peeked in.
it wasnt bolded this time but i like it bolded. ok i understand how i added meat it was just shitty expired meat ALKFSJSHDAIUJKFEIODSJAK . it wasnt even that much meat DAMN. it just looked like more.
actually that’s all i will write. i could do more w platano but yea at his base he is a blonde twink who kills people because he wanted a manga but now he’s friends with a dictator. woo! wow. amazing character writing. i cant wait to get motivation to rewrite everything and make platano a good villain (he will still be very interested in anime sadly. idk why around that time i liked making characters who were obsessed with anime i didn’t even watch it much myself. i think it was because i wanted to put capes on them)
#I REALLY WENT SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC#like i went broader then refocused in at the end#so if you want the basics its just. right at the end#my brain's out of work mode now it's going into the deepfry machine#melon-official

'Christopher Nolan is leading the Oscar nominations this year thanks to Oppenheimer, which is also nominated for the 2024 BAFTA Awards.
Nolan already won his first-ever Golden Globe back in January, so it looks like his record-breaking biopic is going to be his most-awarded movie ever. It's an incredible accomplishment for an essential filmmaker of the 21st century. Now, where does Oppenheimer land in this ranking of his best movies?
It's not easy to order Christopher Nolan's movies from worst to best, given some of them are among the best movies of the last twenty years. Also, Nolan's movies have a common ability to always surprise viewers, usually thanks to time-twisting stories that are never what they seem.
That's true for his latest movie Oppenheimer, a huge box-office hit that has arguably been the most talked-about of his career to date, even ahead of his excellent Batman trilogy. As we mentioned before, it's also one of this year's biggest awards contenders, with enough Oscar buzz to potentially secure the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The three-hour biopic about the life of J Robert Oppenheimer became Nolan's third highest-grossing movie ever, behind only The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises...
10 The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Rounding out Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy was never going to be easy post-The Dark Knight, and sadly, The Dark Knight Rises is more remembered for the controversy surrounding Tom Hardy's vocals than the movie itself.
Still, with standout performances from the likes of Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway, there are worse Batman movies out there.
Also, a near-perfect ending closes the door on Christian Bale's Dark Knight – hopefully not to return for the DCU's Multiverse...
7 Inception (2010)
Boasting Nolan's most A-list cast yet, Inception was like nothing we'd seen before when it debuted in 2010. Helping boost Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career, he plays brilliantly alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as the tragic Dom Cobb.
This Bond-inspired heist movie delves into the psyche of Cillian Murphy's mark, and as we go deeper, each layer is richer than the last.
Delivering one of the most debated endings of all time, we're still talking about whether that totem stopped spinning...
6 Dunkirk (2017)
Remembered alongside war epics like Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk is probably the least Nolan movie in his catalogue.
Hitting the beaches of World War II, Dunkirk follows the famed 1940 evacuation on land, sea, and by air in three different timelines that offer up their own unique perspective.
Doing away with your typical tropes of a war movie, Dunkirk isn't afraid to get straight in there and hammer home the horrors of the war...
5 Batman Begins (2005)
Putting Christian Bale in the cape and cowl for the first time, Batman Begins ended the run of schlocky comic book movies of the early '00s to redefine the superhero origin story.
Restoring faith in the Dark Knight following Batman & Robin was no easy feat, but with Bale's Bruce Wayne channelling the darkness of Batman: The Animated Series, it defied expectations.
Also, opting for Liam Neeson's Ra's al Ghul as the villain instead of the Joker was a stroke of genius...
4 Oppenheimer (2023)
Combining the real-life history of Dunkirk and the theoretical physics of Tenet, Oppenheimer feels like the movie Nolan was always building to.
A dense three-hour biopic about J Robert Oppenheimer, aka "the father of the atomic bomb", it's a thrilling and thought-provoking watch with a never-better Cillian Murphy at its centre.
The movie's different timelines can be a bit confusing and Jean Tatlock's storyline is a bit questionable, but this is one of Nolan's best works.
Once watched, never forgotten...
1 The Dark Knight (2008)
Arguably the best comic book movie of all time and one of the best movies of all time, even superhero haters are hard-pushed not to be wowed by The Dark Knight.
Christian Bale is joined by Aaron Eckhart showing the softer side of the villainous Two-Face, while Gary Oldman's Jim Gordon is another highlight.
Of course, who could forget Heath Ledger's legendary performance as the Joker? For the opening bank heist alone, Ledger more than earned his posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.'

Fans hoping for major DC news in lieu of an actual San Diego Comic-Con are definitely going to get just that at DC FanDome, a digital event designed to be watched at home like a real con.
Originally set up as one epic night of panels and reveals, DC announced that it will be splitting FanDome into two separate and distinct events: Hall of Heroes, which will be held in late August, and WatchVerse in mid-September.
The August date still holds most of the big-ticket items. It’s billed by DC as “an epic world designed personally by Jim Lee featuring special programming, panels and exclusive reveals from a wide variety of films, TV series, games, comics and more.” Functionally, it’s the Hall H of FanDome.
This DC FanDome trailer gives fans a good glimpse at what they can expect from the event:
Here’s everything else you need to know about DC FanDome:

Confirmed: EA to feature in Enchanted Living / Faerie Magazine!
Over the last few days, EA has been teasing an art-inspired photoshoot with Veronica Varlow on Instagram.
Anyone familiar with our faerie friends over at Enchanted Living / Faerie Magazine knows that Veronica is no stranger to their publication. She's a contributor/author and was featured on the cover of their Autumn 2017 issue.
Coincidentally, Enchanted Living sent out a sneak peek in their newsletter today, featuring a familiar red-headed model with the hint of an arm tattoo...
We over at Enchanted Living headquarters are still recovering from our epic Pre-Raphaelite inspired cover shoot that we told you about last week and that took place yesterday at the Cloisters Castle in Baltimore and involved much (glamorous) running up and down spiral staircases, not to mention the handling of lutes and lyres and violins and apples and pomegranates and poetry collections and velvet capes and old-fashioned brushes and many many many flowers...
Update: Confirmed on Instagram by Veronica and Faerie Magazine.
Update Update: Photoshoot for the Spring 2020 issue.
