Ce qui est d'abord intéressant dans le film de DaCosta, c'est que son héros, Anthony, est un peu difficile à aimer, et que le miroir signature de la franchise, pour cet homme en particulier, est à la fois une opportunité – regardez-vous bien, mec – et un malédiction. October looks a lot different than it did only a few weeks ago. As the month many movie theater owners were hanging their hats on with the hope of a weekly deluge of new movies , October has recently been vacated by high profile features that include Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile, and Candyman.

Yet if you’re  a cinephile or movie lover who is desperate for new stories and visions, it is not all doom and gloom. Between the streaming market of Netflix, VOD, and other platforms, as well as some smaller films willing to roll the dice on a limited theatrical release, there are still more than a few things to see in October 2020…

2067

October 2 (U.S. Only)

A high-concept science fiction setup if we’ve ever heard one, 2067 is the story of Ethan Whyte (Kodi Smit-McPhee), a young man born in a dystopian future where he learns that he might be the savior of humanity… at least that’s what people from an even more distant future are saying. In a plot twist that sounds, at least on paper, akin to a reversal of The Terminator, messengers from the future say Ethan is the key to saving the world and wish to transport him via time machine to an unknowable destiny. Chaos ensues. It’s a big idea, but we’re always game for someone swinging big in this genre.

Death of Me

October 2 (November 23 in the UK)

Darren Lynn Boseman, director of Saw II through Saw IV, returns to the horror genre again alongside Nikita’s Maggie Q and Westworld’s Luke Hemsworth. In this VOD release, the pair play a vacationing couple who wake up on an island with a horrible hangover. Yet a video on their phones seems to suggest the night before was even worse: Neil (Hemsworth) spent the evening brutally murdering his wife, as per the screen in their pockets. Nevertheless, here they are now, left with a lot of questions of what happened yesterday… and what can happen today.

Black Box

The first of Amazon Prime and Blumhouse Productions’ “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour’s Black Box has a tantalizing premise. Nolan (Mamoudou Athie) survived a car accident that took his wife, but it also took large swaths of his memory of her. So in order to regain his memory, and regain a sense of stability for his young daughter, Nolan undergoes an experimental treatment where his psychologist uses hypnosis to thrust him into his subconscious where he’ll be able remember his past and face his personal demons. Literally. 

Like something out of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, this horror movie shows how scary being trapped in dreams really is if all that’s in them is the stuff of nightmares…

The Lie

October 6

The second Amazon/Blumhouse feature is more of a psychological thriller than a straightforward horror movie. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, The Lie follows a father (Peter Sarsgaard) who discovers his daughter Kayla (Joey King) accidentally killed her friend… until she admits she may have actually murdered her.

How far will he go to cover-up his daughter’s sins? Well, that’s the logline, and it seems to be a gripping one, albeit reviews from TIFF were less than kind two years ago.

Hubie Halloween

October 7

Last year Adam Sandler warned the Academy that if he doesn’t win an Oscar for Uncut Gems he’d make a film so bad that it’d make “you all pay.” Well, he wasn’t even nominated and eight months after the ceremony, here we are with Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. It remains to be seen whether this is actually the bad one—for starters it filmed before Oscar nominations went out—but it is still very much a Happy Madison production, complete with major supporting roles for Kevin James and Rob Schneider.

Who doesn’t love anthological horror? Hulu certainly does, as they’re releasing Books of Blood, the latest adaptation of Clive Barker’s multi-volume series of short stories by the same name. Previous tales from Books of Blood have been adapted into movies as beloved as Candyman and as decidedly not as Rawhide Rex. In this film version, three stories are created for the screen by co-writer and director Brannon Braga. Here’s hoping it lands closer to the former?

Saint Maud

October 9 (UK Only)

The UK will be the first to get A24’s only horror movie this year. Lucky. The feature directorial debut of Rose Glass, Saint Maud follows an unhealthily repressed and zealous young woman: Maud (Morfydd Clark). Maud is technically a caretaker by trade, looking after people in hospice. But she also imagines herself to be something of an apostle, sent to save godless folks from their sins, particularly Amanda (Jennifer Ehle), the woman she’s living with as the in-home nurse.

Debuting in theaters and on VOD, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is Jim Cummings’ follow-up to Thunder Road. That earlier, underrated movie was a delightful mix of comedy and drama that won the SXSW Grand Jury Prize. So the sophomore effort being a werewolf comedy-horror movie is intriguing. Indeed, Wolf of Snow Hollow is the rare lycanthrope yarn that’s told from the point-of-view of the would-be wolf hunter, Sheriff John Marshall (Cummings).

Following a series of grisly murders every full moon, the residents of Snow Hollow become convinced they have a wolfman on their hands, even if the frustrated sheriff refuses to accept the obvious. The film also marks the final performance of Robert Forster as John’s crusty mentor.

The War with Grandpa

October 9 in the U.S. (October 16 in the UK)

For most people, having Robert De Niro as a grandfather can be an imposing experience. But kids these days! That’s at least one amusing takeaway from The War with Grandpa, the delayed family movie that sees De Niro’s grandfatherly Ed enter into a prank war with his grandson Peter (Oakes Fegley) after upsetting the youth by moving into his old bedroom—Peter’s mom and Ed’s daughter Sally (Uma Thurman) forced them into the arrangement.

Remaking Alfred Hitchcock remains a tricky proposition that has thwarted many filmmakers in the past. Readapting the only one of his movies to win the Oscar for Best Picture, Rebecca, appears all the harder. Yet everything we’ve seen from Ben Wheatley and Netflix’s luscious adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel is highly encouraging.

With a winning cast that includes Lily James as the new Mrs. de Winter, Armie Hammer as her husband Maxim, and Kristin Scott Thomas as his menacing housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the film opens with the young bride trying to step into the shoes of Maxim’s dead first wife, Rebecca. An apparent light of his mansion that has been long snuffed, Rebecca’s flame burns still if only because of Mrs. Danvers’ admiration for her late mistress… and maybe the ghost who prowls the house. This is archetypal Gothic horror, and with screenwriter Jane Goldman apparently keeping the novel’s original ending, we already feel seduced by the imagery.

On the Rocks

October 2 in the UK (October 23 in the U.S.)

Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray work together again. For the first time since their luminous Lost in Translation (if you ignore the ill-considered A Very Murray Christmas), the director and star are collaborating on this visibly intimate tale. It’s about an adult daughter (Rashida Jones) and her famous father (Murray) spending a weekend in New York City on an adventure after years of estrangement.

The longtime Walt Disney Animation Studios animator oversaw the design and animation of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin in Aladdin, and Rapunzel in Tangled. With Over the Moon, he steps away from the Mouse and toward Netflix as a first-time co-director, alongside John Kahrs (an animator on Tangled and Frozen).

The trailer for the film is like a Georges Méliès fever dream from  as a little girl named Fei Fei (Cathy Ang) builds a rocket ship to take her to the moon. But once there, Fei Fei and friends meet a mythical moon goddess (Hamilton’s Phillipa Soo) who takes them on a candy-colored odyssey through the cosmos.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are two of the most intriguing new voices in science fiction. If you don’t recognize their names, go watch The Endless right now. One of the strangest and cleverest sci-fi yarns of the last decade, that film is now being followed up by Synchronic, another original tale that stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan. The specifics of the film remain vague other than it is about two New Orleans paramedics who investigate a series of murders caused by a new, bizarre designer drug. But we already know we can’t wait to watch what horrible side effects come from these poor bastards taking it.

The Craft: Legacy

It cannot be Halloween without at least one more horror movie coming out the week of. Thus enters The Craft: Legacy, Sony Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ legacy sequel to the original 1996 The Craft. Like its predecessor, this follows an outsider who is the new girl in school (Cailee Spaeny). She may be ostracized by the popular kids, but she befriends fellow students who have alternative tastes… like witchcraft.

The original is a touchstone for millennials and Gen-Xers of a certain age, and this reboot looks to push the story into a more complex understanding of friendship. And if it doesn’t, it’s still a Blumhouse effort so it should have plenty of spooky jumps!

Relic

October 30 (US Only)

Dementia is at the heart of this very eerie chiller where three generations of women convene in an old family home which seems to be rotting from the inside. Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote star in a slow build drama which delves into the horror of losing your sense of self, as Nevin’s matriarch goes missing for days and can’t remember what happened while her house is filled with odd notes, black mould and snippets of a life slipping away from her grasp. This is the feature debut of Australian-Japanese director Natalie Erika James and it’s a stylish, chilling and confident first feature with a final act that veers into full blown horror. Out already in the States on VOD it has a UK theatrical release in the UK.

Remake du film d'horreur culte des années 1990, le terrifiant Candyman et son tueur à gages débarquent aujourd'hui sur les écrans, bien décidés à nous faire bondir sur nos sièges. Doit-on aller voir ce nouveau film d'horreur ? Voici notre avis.

Adapté d'une nouvelle de Clive Barker (Hellraiser), le premier film de Candyman, sorti en 1992, a secoué le petit monde du cinéma d'horreur. Sa relecture de la légende urbaine et de son tueur à gages a terrifié le public. Le film est rapidement devenu culte et a eu plusieurs suites. Trente ans plus tard, la franchise a droit à une nouvelle œuvre produite par le talentueux Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) et réalisée par Nia DaCosta, future réalisatrice de The Marvels pour le MCU. Mais tient-il toutes ses promesses ?

Synopsis du film L'artiste Anthony McCoy vit à Chicago avec sa femme, directrice de galerie d'art. En panne d'inspiration, il découvre la légende du Candyman, un assassin qui peut être invoqué en prononçant cinq fois son nom lorsqu'il se regarde dans le miroir. Anthony commence à la considérer comme le sujet de ses peintures, mais son intérêt pour Candyman lui rappellera un passé mystérieux et sanglant.

Devrions-nous aller voir Candyman ? Une bonne série de films d'horreur repose beaucoup sur la qualité de son "boogeyman", son tueur emblématique. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers en sont de bons exemples. Et force est de constater que Candyman, issu d'une légende urbaine enracinée dans le folklore anglo-saxon, est une figure d'horreur intéressante.

Les rituels, la répétition de son nom, les crochets... Même trois décennies plus tard, toute la mythologie entourant ce personnage fonctionne toujours de la même manière. Ce nouveau film sait le mettre à jour avec efficacité. La mise en scène est inventive, jouant sur les reflets, les hallucinations multiples et les visuels pour créer des moments vraiment terrifiants. L'acteur Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, vu dans Aquaman, la prochaine série Watchmen and Matrix Resurrections, se démarque comme un héritier intéressant du crochet Candyman.

Ce remake, qui ressemble à une suite spirituelle, revitalise également le thème du premier film. Les questions sur la violence urbaine et le quotidien des minorités trouvent ici de très vrais échos contemporains : des films parlent de gentrification, de racisme ordinaire, de l'Amérique de Trump et du traumatisme subi notamment par la communauté noire aux États-Unis.

Ainsi, Candyman est aussi une œuvre politique en prise directe avec son époque. Mais si les grands films d'horreur sont ceux qui disent aussi quelque chose de leur époque, reste à savoir si ce film saura marquer les esprits et surtout pallier ses défauts, qui sont encore nombreux.

Horreur très rare On le répète, la séquence d'horreur est une vraie réussite. Malheureusement, ces moments d'effroi surnaturel sont rares et immergés dans une histoire de poursuite artistique épuisante et pas si intéressante. Le film perd ainsi beaucoup de son énergie à courir plusieurs lapins en même temps, essayant en même temps d'être une digne continuation du film original, une histoire d'amour, une réflexion sur la création et l'héritage, mais aussi un début. une nouvelle vision plus intellectuelle.

Les fans du film de 1992 regretteront que le long métrage ait choisi d'être davantage un thriller psychologique et social, plutôt qu'un vrai film de "boogeyman". Ce nouveau Candyman est un pur produit de son époque et c'est sans surprise qu'il est devenu, entre les mains de Jordan Peele, un film à fort contenu politique, qui touche le point sensible.

C'est toujours dommage qu'il ait abandonné une partie de l'esprit de la franchise au passage, ôtant une grande partie de l'imagination sanglante et engageante qui l'a rendu célèbre. Au final, si Candyman reste un film solide et convaincant, avec des scènes d'horreur brillantes, ce n'est peut-être pas le film d'horreur que nous attendions tous. Et c'est embarrassant.

Adapté d'une nouvelle de Clive Barker (Hellraiser), le premier film de Candyman, sorti en 1992, a secoué le petit monde du cinéma d'horreur. Sa relecture de la légende urbaine et de son tueur à gages a terrifié le public. Le film est rapidement devenu culte et a eu plusieurs suites. Trente ans plus tard, la franchise a droit à une nouvelle œuvre produite par le talentueux Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) et réalisée par Nia DaCosta, future réalisatrice de The Marvels pour le MCU. Mais tient-il toutes ses promesses ?

L'artiste Anthony McCoy vit à Chicago avec sa femme, directrice de galerie d'art. En panne d'inspiration, il découvre la légende du Candyman, un assassin qui peut être invoqué en prononçant cinq fois son nom lorsqu'il se regarde dans le miroir. Anthony commence à la considérer comme le sujet de ses peintures, mais son intérêt pour Candyman lui rappellera un passé mystérieux et sanglant.

Une bonne série de films d'horreur repose beaucoup sur la qualité de son "boogeyman", son tueur emblématique. Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers en sont de bons exemples. Et force est de constater que Candyman, issu d'une légende urbaine ancrée dans le folklore anglo-saxon, est une figure d'horreur intéressante.

Les rituels, la répétition de son nom, les crochets... Même trois décennies plus tard, toute la mythologie entourant ce personnage fonctionne toujours de la même manière. Ce nouveau film sait le mettre à jour avec efficacité. La mise en scène est inventive, jouant sur les reflets, les hallucinations multiples et les visuels pour créer des moments vraiment terrifiants. L'acteur Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, vu dans Aquaman, la prochaine série Watchmen and Matrix Resurrections, se démarque comme un héritier intéressant du crochet Candyman.

Ce remake, qui ressemble à une suite spirituelle, revitalise également le thème du premier film. Les questions sur la violence urbaine et le quotidien des minorités trouvent ici de très vrais échos contemporains : des films parlent de gentrification, de racisme ordinaire, de l'Amérique de Trump et du traumatisme subi notamment par la communauté noire aux États-Unis.

Ainsi, Candyman est aussi une œuvre politique en prise directe avec son époque. Mais si les grands films d'horreur sont ceux qui disent aussi quelque chose de leur époque, reste à savoir si ce film saura marquer les esprits et surtout pallier ses défauts, qui sont encore nombreux.

On le répète, la séquence d'horreur est une vraie réussite. Malheureusement, ces moments d'effroi surnaturel sont rares et immergés dans une histoire de poursuite artistique épuisante et pas si intéressante. Le film perd ainsi beaucoup de son énergie à courir plusieurs lapins en même temps, essayant en même temps d'être une digne continuation du film original, une histoire d'amour, une réflexion sur la création et l'héritage, mais aussi un début. une nouvelle vision plus intellectuelle.

Les fans du film de 1992 regretteront que le long métrage ait choisi d'être davantage un thriller psychologique et social, plutôt qu'un vrai film de "boogeyman". Ce nouveau Candyman est un pur produit de son époque et c'est sans surprise qu'il est devenu, entre les mains de Jordan Peele, un film à fort contenu politique, qui touche le point sensible.

C'est toujours dommage qu'il ait abandonné une partie de l'esprit de la franchise au passage, ôtant une grande partie de l'imagination sanglante et engageante qui l'a rendu célèbre. Au final, si Candyman reste un film solide et convaincant, avec des scènes d'horreur brillantes, ce n'est peut-être pas le film d'horreur que nous attendions tous. Et c'est embarrassant.

Many people that I know love scary movies because they give them an  excuse to cuddle up to their partner seeking protection because they are so scared, many guys that I know love them because they give them the opportunity to be a strong protector.  Some people think they’re comical and love them for that.  These people are my brother and his friends who buy cheap Japanese horror films like Dead Sushi and Zombie Ass and laugh their butts of at them.

Then there are the people like me.  I’m somewhat of a horror flick connoisseur.

I prefer a traditional blend of thriller and intellectual context in my scary movie cocktail.  I’m talking murder your boyfriend with a nail clipper then delve into the deep psychological issues that led you to kill him type of scary movies.  That psychological aspect in horror films combined with compelling writing and fantastic cinematography is best found in the era dubbed “The Golden Age of Horror” in the 1920s-30’s.  Films such as Dracula contributed to that decade earning that title.

However, I beg to differ from the accepted belief that Golden Ages are free from the ever changing thoughts and circumstances of the current time.  For example, citizens of the ’60’s were faced with nuclear wars, integration, mass  killings, space travel, etc.  The last thing that concerned them were tales of fake monsters from under the sea coming to hurt them, they had real monsters a block away!  These circumstances reflected themselves in the accepted horror of the  period.  Horror such as The Birds or The Andy Griffith Show (just kidding, kind of…I mean two trigger happy white cops in the South does inspire fear in my black self) were praised and according to many from that era the horror movies and tv shows from the ’60’s were the best.

This belief is partly due to nostalgia, and I can relate because I dub my childhood decade, the ’90’s, as having the most memorable horror movies.  The 90’s is dubbed by many a transitional time period in scary movies.  It was coming out from that time period in the 80’s when a group of teens played by 30 year olds going into the woods and getting killed was the accepted horror movie format and going into a whole new millennium.

Fake monsters had been thoroughly used as villains in horror films of years past.

But in the ’90s the villains were human.

The ’90’s saw villains such as Candyman and Hannibal Lecter.

Scary movies in the 90’s were real and that’s what made them truly scary.  We could imagine going to the woods with our friends to film something like on The Blair Witch Project or getting stuck in a blizzard and helped by a seemingly kind woman that turns out to be an obsessive psychopath like in Misery.

Being plausible is one of the most important factors in a good horror film.  The others being a fluid plot line, relatable characters, and suspense.  The following 10 movies from the 1990s have all of these elements and can be accessed on a variety of streaming platforms.  So when deciding which movie to watch that will have you looking over your shoulder for days afterwards, consult this list.

1. Misery

This was the film that introduced me to the wonderful Kathy Bates.  As a side note Kathy actually won the Oscar for Best Actress this year for her performance in this movie.  This Oscar winning film was adapted from the novel of the same name written by Stephen King.

The plot of the film follows an author who was “rescued” by a crazed fan.  Ensuing build up in each scene leads to great pace in regards to the plot.  When that is then combined with phenomenal acting the ensuing great film is produced.

2. Candyman

For some reason Candyman was always on tv and all the kids at my school were allowed to watch it.  Now that I look back I question allowing a scary movie to run during primetime on a weekday,  I also question the portrayal of Black Americans in media.  Why we always got to live in the projects or the hood (Goodtimes, Lean on me, Menace to Society, etc.)?  Black people can’t be middle class and have a healthy relationship like everyone else on tv?  But I digress, back to the movie…

The foundational plot of Candyman is relatively simple and has an associated tale in countries around the world.  Basically if you look in a mirror and say his name five times Candyman will appear and fudge stuff up.  Simple, right?

Fudge it up!

Candyman  is a gem for taking this simple plot and using it to explore deeper issues and to also examine inequities in America.  Candyman also served as a visual representation of the true horrors faced daily by those living in housing developments.

3.  The Sixth Sense

Most 90’s kids were too young to see this movie when it came out but may remember the line “I see dead people”.  This line alone makes it a memorable movie but I will explain briefly why it is also a great movie.

It is great both for the foreboding sense that it brought to the audience by teasing us with the supernatural and also for its steady pacing.

4. The Silence of the Lambs

This film following the tale of a cannibal and profiler is most notable for the line “hello, clariece”.  The scary thing is this line was actually never spoken.  The fact that this film had the power to truly implant memories in the brains of viewers is the main reason it is dubbed one of the scariest films of the 90’s.

When it said it would get in your head, it meant it.

5. Scream

This film revitalized the horror movie.  Everyone thought it had died then Scream popped up like

The iconic film sparked a yearly outpour of related merchandise and supplied Halloween costumes for all the kids that were too old to dress up as disney princesses but too young to dress up as slutty (insert ANYTHING).

Costume and subsequent films aside Scream was a great movie with a simple concept. The realism of being home alone and answering a call on your house phone (RIP) and finding the killer to be a murderous psychopath is very realistic and really inspired fear from the masses due to this.

6. Tales from the hood

I have a short attention span, movies have about 30 minutes of my undivided attention before I’m done.  That’s why movies such as this carefully crafted anthology horror flick appeal to me so much.  Tales from the Hood was directed by Spike Lee and contains a variety of pertinent issues subtly interjected in its scary context.  Issues such as police brutality, mass incarceration, and racism from elected officials were explored in this film and are still pertinent today.  Tales from the Hood is like Tales from the Crypt mixed with Boyz in the Hood and presidential debate.  This diversity leads to why Tales from the Hood is one of the ’90’s best scary movies.

7. The Blair Witch Project

This film is the King of suspense!  Viewers were on the edges of their seats for over an hour in anticipation of what “could happen”.

8.  Hocus Pocus

This is literally every 90’s kids’ movie!  This movie just symbolizes the good ole days when you didn’t have to pay bills and before student loan payments.  When you actually got presents that weren’t alcohol and your biggest issue was whether or not that cute boy in class liked you.  Good times.

Now it’s 25 years (feel old now?) after its release in 1993 and the phenomenal acting, memorable lines (“he’s a little leaguer!”) and phenomenal costume design stand out to me.  Those elements combined with the unique plot as well as the addition of nostalgia make this film one of the best scary movies everrrr.

9. The Good Son

This movie showed us all the evil side of the kid from Home Alone.  Kevin was done playing harmless tricks on two idiots and was ready to murder some people.  This movie exemplifies juxtaposition.  It’s akin to a literary classic.  This is a great movie.

10. I know what you did last summer

This 1997 cult classic film inspired a slew of jokes from the title.  My favorite pun is the following one from Family Guy.

But jokes aside, the acting and the plot of this movie was’t phenomenal.  In fact, the story was a bit predictable.   It was the eerie feeling of foreboding and resulting pop phenomenon of the film that cemented it’s place as one of the best scary films.
