Types of Light Bulbs: A Comprehensive Guide to 50 Different Light Bulb Types, Including Incandescent Bulbs
Tumblr media
Introduction To Light Bulbs
Light bulbs are devices that produce light by converting electrical energy into visible electromagnetic radiation. They are widely used in homes, businesses, and public spaces to provide illumination. Light bulbs come in various shapes and sizes, and the type of bulb you choose can impact the brightness, color temperature, and energy efficiency of the light produced. There are several types of light bulbs available on the market today, including incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are the oldest and most common type of light bulb, but they are also the least efficient. Halogen bulbs are a type of incandescent bulb that uses halogen gas to increase efficiency and lifespan. CFLs are a more energy-efficient alternative to incandescent bulbs, while LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient and longest-lasting type of bulb available today. When choosing a light bulb, it's important to consider factors such as the bulb's wattage, color temperature, and lifespan. Higher-wattage bulbs produce more light, but they also consume more energy. Color temperature refers to the perceived "warmth" or "coolness" of the light produced by the bulb, with lower color temperatures producing warmer, yellow light and higher color temperatures producing cooler, bluer light. Lifespan is an important consideration for LED bulbs, which can last up to 25,000 hours or more, compared to incandescent bulbs, which typically last only around 1,000 hours.
What Is Light Bulb?
The electric lamp's glass portion that emits light while electricity is passed through it is known as a bulb. A light bulb is an electric light source which is also referred to as a lamp. In the middle, there are two solid connecting wires with a thin wire connected between them. This thin wire is known as filament. The bulb becomes fused when the thin wire filament breaks, and even a fused bulb does not glow. The brightness, as well as the color of a light bulb, may change the look of a home as well as even your mood when you are in it. As a result, buying an entire box of a similar light bulb as well as installing it around your home is not a good idea. While most of us do not take enough consideration to house lighting, selecting the best light bulbs for your house may improve the mood, reduce your power bills, as well as also enhance your efficiency. As a man-made fire, the electric light bulb has been considered the more valuable innovation. After sundown, the light bulb served to maintain social order, extending the workday well into the nighttime, as well as helping us to navigate and drive securely in the darkness. There would be no nightlife without a light bulb. Read More: Smart Home Products Every House Requires

Tumblr media
The incandescent light bulb is an electric light supply that works on the principle of incandescence, it would be the emission of light produced by heating a filament. It is available in a huge variety of sizes, wattages, as well as voltages. In an incandescent bulb, the tungsten filament is contained in a glass outer layer. The flow of electricity runs across the filament, heating it to the level where it gives light. Incandescent lamps are popular in table lamps, corridor lighting, workstation lamps, closet lighting, decorative lighting, as well as chandeliers. Halogen Lamp

They will significantly reduce the cost of lighting for your house or place of business as well as consume much lesser energy than conventional incandescent bulbs. Sodium Lamp
Tumblr media
Sodium is available in both high as well as low-pressure variants. The light produced by high-pressure sodium bulbs is reddish-yellow, whereas the light from low-pressure sodium bulbs is much more equally white. The light of a bulb is produced by exciting sodium. Corn Lamp
Tumblr media
An assembly of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) placed on a metal frame is known as a corn lamp. According to how the yellow LEDs are arranged on the fixture, which resembles corn kernels on a corn cob, these lights are also known as corn lamps. For general use as well as industrial lighting purposes, corn lamps are a highly popular choice. To be available to satisfy almost every lighting application, these lights are available in a wide range of different wattage choices, base diameters, as well as physical dimensions. The most typical uses of corn types of light bulbs include household lighting, warehouse lighting, commercial and retail spaces, municipal and school lighting, garage lighting, walkway lighting, industrial lighting, and security lighting. Best smart bulbs for your connected home
Smart LED bulbs that can be controlled by a hub or smartphone app are no longer a new idea. What is new is how far this technology has come since its advent just a few years ago. Also new: Products like the Nanoleaf Light Panels—a system of interlocking LED panels that let you decorate with light—fundamentally change the light-bulb concept.
Smart LED bulbs aren’t quite a commodity, but they are getting close to maturity as far as the market goes. Today’s bulbs are more compact, much brighter, have better color representation, and, for the most part, feature control apps that do more than ever and are easier to set up. Prices have also come down, with some no-name color-tunable bulbs now available for less than $10 each. (Buyer beware: You get what you pay for.)
With their rainbow of hues and myriad party tricks, color LEDs get all the press in the world of smart lighting. It’s fun stuff, but the reality is that most of us will rarely find much of a need to turn all the lights in the house blue or red—unless it’s time to celebrate our team winning the World Series. Even then, you’ll probably want to turn them all back to white after the celebration.
White light is also important in its own right, as today there is plenty of science to show how various shades of white—with variations in color temperature—impact our psychological state. Cool light that’s closer to blue has an energizing effect, and is best in the morning. Warm light is relaxing, and is best after the sun goes down. Note, however, that not every white smart LED light is color-temperature-tunable. Check out the specs before you buy.
White smart bulbs downplay the party features that are a staple of color-tunable bulbs. On the other hand, white smart bulbs are less expensive than color bulbs, making it more affordable to roll them out in multiple rooms.
We’ve tested just about every color and white smart LED bulb on the market. You’ll find links to all our reviews at the bottom of the page, and we’ll update this story as new models are introduced.
Philips was one of the first players in this market, and the company’s experience shows. Physically, its Hue Color and Ambiance bulbs haven’t changed much since their introduction in late 2012, but the latest generation lasts a lot longer and the company has added a Bluetooth radio that obviates the need for the Philips Hue Bridge (but most smart home denizens will want the Bridge anyway). The Philips Hue ecosystem is the industry’s deepest and broadest, including not only bulbs of every shape and size imaginable, but also indoor and outdoor fixtures as well, including the Philips Hue Calla pathway light and the Philips Hue Lily outdoor spotlight, both of which we like very much.
LIFX is a very strong competitor in the smart lighting space and comes a very close second place in our roundup. LIFX no longer has just A19 and BR30 form factors to offer, and we really like its unique  LIFX+ (which has an array of infrared LEDs that will help your home security camera see in the dark), but Philips still delivers much more diversity in its ecosystem and universe of third-party support.
Our choice won’t surprise anyone who’s been following this market. Philips dominates this space and is also our top pick for best color LED smart bulb. The latest Hue bulbs can be controlled via Bluetooth or Zigbee (the latter requires the Philips Hue Bridge), they deliver high-quality light, and are backed by a strong warranty. We received the BR30 form factor for our review, but the bulb is also available in A19, candelabra, and even with vintage-style LED filaments.
The new Cree Connected Max line of smart bulbs is agressively priced and available in all the most popular form factors: A19, A21, BR30, and PAR38. The A19 Tunable White + Color Changing bulb we reviewed costs just $10, and it supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, so you don’t need to factor in the added cost of a hub to integrate it into your smart home. It’s a very good product.
Most home security cameras are equipped with infrared LEDs to deliver a semblance of night vision. the LIFX+ is equipped with infrared LEDs of its own, which are active even when the bulb is turned off via software. Infrared light is invisible to the naked eye, but the LIFX+ can bathe a room in it so that your security camera can see more of the room and in more detail than it can with its own infrared LEDs.
The 2020 version of the Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus LED is the only strip light to support both Bluetooth and the more robust Zigbee protocol (if you’re willing to pay for the required bridge to connect it to your Wi-Fi network, that is). The very nature of LED light strips renders them delicate devices, and the first review product we received broke after a short amount of time (the second one is holding up just fine). But we haven’t encountered a competing device that’s as versatile as this one.
Smart light bulb protocols and features
Three control technologies continue to vie for leadership in the smart downlight market (Z-Wave is a major contender in smart lighting, but you won’t encounter it in bulbs—just in switches, plug-in modules, control panels, and smart-home hubs).
Zigbee: Bulbs that use the popular smart-home networking protocol require a bridge to communicate with your home Wi-Fi network. This is the technology Philips has adopted for its Hue lineup, but it’s not the only one.
Wi-Fi: This class of bulb talks directly to your Wi-Fi router, no hub or bridge required. LIFX and TP-Link both manufacture excellent Wi-Fi smart bulbs, but neither company comes close to Signify’s Philips Hue lineup in terms of the depth and breadth of the Hue ecosystem.
Bluetooth: These bulbs skip your home network altogether and pair directly with your smartphone or tablet. As such, they can’t be controlled from outside your home. GE and a number of other manufacturers make Bluetooth bulbs, some of better quality than others. Signify has recently added Bluetooth radios to its Philips Hue line of smart GU10 spotlight, which eliminates the need to deploy the Philips Hue Bridge. Taking the bridge out of the equation reduces the overall cost of deployment, but adds some limitations. You can read more in our review of the new Philips Hue bulbs.
Each of these technologies has pros and cons, so before you attempt to settle on a specific bulb, first try to determine which tech is right for you. If you want to hook your bulbs into a broader smart-home system—such as SmartThings or Nest—Bluetooth bulbs are out. You can control more than one bulb with your phone, but you can’t connect it to sensors or other systems inside your home. Don’t like the idea of pairing a bulb to your phone? A Wi-Fi bulb will work best for you, though you won’t have quite as many options as you’ll find with a Zigbee product.
Smart bulb, or smart switch?
There’s a significant argument about the best way to install smart lighting, and two approaches present themselves. You can either go with expensive smart bulbs and control them all individually, or you can use cheap dumb bulbs and install smart switches to control all the lights on that circuit. Both approaches make sense: With smart bulbs, the biggest issue is cost, but there’s also complexity to deal with. While bulbs can usually be grouped based on location, this is only as intuitive to manage as the bulb control app.
Smart switches, on the other hand, are far more complicated to install—to the point where some users might be uncomfortable dealing with exposed wiring and would prefer to hire an electrician. Smart switches, however, provide more flexibility in many installations.
Habituated from years of flipping hard-wired switches, many users (or their children) will instinctively use the wall switch to turn the lights out when they leave a room. Once that happens, all the apps in the world won’t be able to turn the light back on until the switch is returned to the on position. While this won’t be an issue if you install smart switches, they can’t change a bulb’s color or color temperature.
That said, smart bulbs, no matter what the technology, still won’t be right for everyone. Notably, most of these bulbs cannot be dimmed via a hardwired wall switch (it messes with the power going to the radio, rendering them useless). Some will fail even if a dimmer is present on the circuit and dialed up to full power. The quality of light from an LED bulb is likely to be much, much better.
The good news is that bulb prices are going down, so it’s easier to get started with 2.4G/IR LED bulb and less punishing should you find that a product doesn’t work for you. That said, we want to get you started on the right foot. So without further ado, here are deep dives into the most worthwhile color and white LED smart bulbs on the market.

How to Make the Most of LED Lighting in Your Home
Tumblr media
LED lighting is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs, working by passing an electrical current through a microchip to produce visible light. They come in various shapes, sizes, colors, and temperatures for use at home.
There are different types of LED bulbs available on the market, including standard LED light bulbs, which disperse light at a wide angle throughout a room, and candelabra LED light bulbs, which emulate the shape of a candle flame and work best in chandeliers and decorative fixtures.
Choosing the Right LED Lighting
Proper lighting is essential for every room in your home. To determine the lighting needs of different areas of your home, it is important to layer lighting for a balanced effect, calculate lumens per square foot, choose the best type of lighting for every room, consider adjustable sconces, and choose quality fixtures for outdoor lighting. These tips will help you determine the lighting needs of different areas of your home and ensure ample lighting.
For example, living rooms require layered lighting, while kitchens require several types of lighting for adequate illumination. Adjustable sconces can adapt to specific lighting needs and are suitable for spaces that require task-oriented lighting. Outdoor lighting serves several purposes, including safety, security, and aesthetics.
Factors to Consider Choosing Lighting for Each Room
Proper lighting is essential for every room in your home. Here are some tips from the search results to determine the lighting needs of different areas of your home:
> Layer lighting for a balanced effect: Aim for at least three sources of light in every space, including the powder room or foyer. In small spaces, you can reduce the bulb’s voltage.
> Calculate lumens per square foot: The most important details are that kitchen work areas require 7,000 to 8,000 lumens per square foot, while home offices require 3,000–6,000 lumens for ambient lighting and a minimum of 1,200 lumens for task lighting.
> Choose the best type of lighting for every room: Lighting should be tailored to the needs of different spaces, such as living rooms, kitchens, and hallways. Living rooms require layered lighting, while kitchens require several types. Hallways require 5–10 lumens per square foot.
> Consider adjustable sconces: Adjustable sconces can adapt to specific lighting needs and are suitable for spaces that require task-oriented lighting.
> Choose quality fixtures for outdoor lighting: Outdoor lighting serves several purposes, including safety, security, and aesthetics. Choose quality fixtures for landscape lighting.
Maximizing LED Lighting Efficiency
Maximizing LED lighting efficiency can be done by various strategies, like  choosing low-power diodes, driving emitters at a low constant current, using more LEDs at lower current levels, ensuring the LED driver is efficient, and optimizing the projection of light from a COB LED with lenses or reflectors. Low-voltage DC drivers can reach up to 98% efficiency, while appropriate lenses or reflectors can focus the light output.
Remember that the quality of the LED components and drivers can significantly impact efficiency and longevity, so it’s essential to invest in reliable products from LED light manufacturers in Kochi, Kerala.
To sum up, LED lighting is an excellent choice for home lighting needs due to its energy-efficient and eco-friendly benefits. To make the most of it, it is important to choose the right fixtures, consider color temperature, and layer your lighting sources strategically. Additionally, dimmers, task-specific lighting, and architectural features can be added to create a comfortable living space. Finally, for the best quality and selection of LED lighting options, it is recommended to purchase from top and reliable LED light dealers in Kochi, Kerala. These tips can transform your home’s lighting and create a beautiful and inviting atmosphere.

How to Choose the Perfect Light Bulb for Your Lighting Fixture
Home lighting has a significant impact on interior design and home decoration. It shapes our mood — it even affects our perception of space’s size and the colors within that space. Lighting also contributes to our mental performance and the ability to complete a given task. Accent lighting can draw us into a room by highlighting colors and treasured possessions.
Lighting can also have a considerable impact on the energy efficiency of a home. Lightbulb technology has advanced significantly in recent years, and more options are available than ever before. High-efficiency lighting is now available with an excellent color quality and a variety of light outputs. Energy-saving lighting initiatives are also easy for renters to implement and don’t require owning the home.
Even though light bulbs are fairly basic in function, there are so many options available that you can easily get lost. Rather than buying the first bulb that 'looks like it will work', take the time to find the perfect bulb for your fixture. You'll not only save money in the long run, but you'll also end up with the most attractive lighting for your home, and prevent a possible fire from using the wrong option.
               Understanding the Light Bulb Basics
 1.     Look for the right wattage. The first thing to consider when matching a lightbulb to a light fixture is the wattage amount. Every light bulb has a matching wattage - the amount of energy it is capable of producing. This number will range anywhere from 40-watts to 120-watts for a traditional light fixture. On the flip side, every light fixture has a maximum wattage amount. This is the highest wattage the fixture is capable of using without becoming a fire hazard (it can’t handle a high wattage). You, therefore, need to choose a light bulb with a wattage amount that is equal to or less than the maximum wattage on your fixture.
·       Using a light bulb with wattage above the maximum that the fixture can handle is a major fire hazard.
·       You can use a light bulb with wattage less than what your fixture asks for.
 2.     Pay attention to the lumens. Lumens refers to the amount of light the bulb will put out (as opposed to wattage, which is the amount of energy). The higher the number of lumens, the brighter the light bulb will be. Therefore, if you’re trying to illuminate a large space, you’ll want to use a light bulb with a high number of lumens (above 1000). A small fixture or table lamp does not require a bulb with a high number of lumens.
·       The more lumens, the closer the appearance of the light is to that of natural sunlight.
 3.     Look at the shape of the bulb. There are many different shapes of light bulbs, each with a different use. The most commonly used bulbs are the generic ‘bulb’ shape, the spiral shape, and the A shape. Additionally, there are drop-shaped, globe-shaped, flame-shaped, tubes, and more varieties of bulbs. Generally, the shape doesn’t matter, but some light fixtures require a specifically shaped bulb to work or appear correctly. Check your fixture first, and then look for bulbs that match.
·       Make sure to check the socket type and size of your lighting fixture so that you know what light bulbs you need.
·       There are 4 commonly used thread size groups for mains supply lamps: Candelabra - E12 North America, E11 in Europe; Intermediate - E17 North America, E14 (Small ES, SES) in Europe; medium or standard - E26 (MES) in North America, E27 (ES) in Europe; Mogul - Mogul: E39 North America, E40 (Goliath ES) in Europe.
·       The number after the E refers to the external diameter of the light bulb's thread in millimeters. For example, E27 means that the external diameter of the thread is 27 millimeters.
 4.     Check the ‘life expectancy’ of the light bulb. All light bulbs are not created equal; in fact, some bulbs last quite a long time, while others will only remain lit for a few months or years of use. Each bulb should say on the back what the life expectancy is, normally based on three hours of use a day. If you’re putting the bulb in a well-used fixture, it will do you good to find a bulb that has a longer life expectancy than a bulb that goes in a rarely-used lamp.
·       Incandescent bulbs generally have the shortest life expectancy.
·       Halogen bulbs are cheap upgrades over traditional incandescent bulbs, having improved efficiency and lifespan with only a small increase in price.
·       Compact fluorescent bulbs have a lifespan that is several times better than an incandescent light bulb but the lifespan is reduced significantly if the bulb is switched on and off frequently.
·       LED bulbs have arguably the longest lifespan of all light bulbs, several times better than an incandescent light bulb and significantly better than most fluorescent bulbs. Manufacturers are giving long warranties to confirm the long lifespan of LED bulbs, typically 15,000 hours (15 years at 3 hours/day), and to support 50,000 switch cycles.
 5.     Look at the energy cost of the bulb. Besides the initial cost of the light bulb, there is an additional overall energy cost associated with the bulb. This is the price you will pay in electricity bills for the one bulb over its lifetime. Energy-efficient light bulbs will cost much less over their lifetimes than will traditional light bulbs. When possible, you’ll want to choose bulbs that have a low lifetime cost. This may mean paying a bit more upfront, but you’ll reap the benefits down the road.
 6.     Check the mercury content of the light bulb. The mercury content of the bulb doesn’t affect the light or overall use of the bulb; the only thing a bulb that contains mercury will do is prevent you from throwing it away. If your bulb has any mercury in it at all, it cannot be disposed of in the trash. Now, mostly screw-in CFL bulbs contain mercury, but you should check all bulbs you purchase just in case.
    Recycle Used Lightbulbs
Incandescent and halogen bulbs are difficult to recycle but can be safely disposed of in the trash bin because they do not contain heavy metals. CFLs contain mercury and are not safe in landfills and should only be recycled. Wrap or package CFL bulbs carefully to ensure that they do not break in transport.
Home Depot has a free CFL recycling program, and the Environmental Protection Agency maintains a list of mail-in CFL recycling programs. Although CFLs are not accepted in curbside recycling programs, many communities have local CFL recycling drop-off sites. If you’ve made the switch to LEDs, it will probably be a while before you need to dispose of them, and right now, take-back programs are few. Be sure to check with your local waste disposal or recycling provider for proper LED disposal.
  Get Artistic
Numerous LED lighting fixtures and unique LED bulbs are available on the market. LED light strips are a great way to create accent light in a home and can even be controlled from a smartphone. Vintage Edison LED lightbulbs cast an amber light and have an antique appearance. Some light fixtures even come with LED bulbs installed.
  Turn Off Forgotten Lights
Leaving lights running when a room is empty wastes energy. Turn off incandescent, halogen, and LED lightbulbs right away when nobody is in the room. The useful life of a CFL lightbulb is shortened by being turned on and off, thus Energy.gov recommends turning off CFLs when nobody is in the room for more than 15 minutes.
Do you find this informative? I’d be very grateful if you’d help it spread by emailing it to a friend or sharing it on Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook. Thank you!

Welcome! Come on in and take a look around! My daughter Eleanor, 10-years-old and an absolute delight, wanted a room makeover. She and I worked together to update her room from little kid to tween, and it will carry her right through the teen years with way more style than I ever had when I was growing up.
Thank you to Linda at Calling it Home for organizing the One Room Challenge and inviting me to participate again! Six weeks goes by so quickly (especially when you have a somewhat indecisive kid and a major color scheme change midway through), but it’s always the most fun and a really good kick to get a room totally redone.
Pinky/purple/lilac/lavender/orchid/thistle. What do you call this color? I call it a color I never would have chosen myself, but one that my daughter wanted and that I have come to love. If you know me, you know I love pink, but I prefer it less saturated and on the peachy side. It may seem funny, but this particular color is a little outside of my comfort zone!
The room had white walls and wood trim when we moved in. We painted it dark blue when Eleanor was four (she chose the color then, too), but six years later is a long time in kid years, and she was ready for a change.
From Sherwin-Williams Loyal Blue to Benjamin Moore Magic Potion with Barberry painted trim.
How pretty is that Rifle Paper Co. for Loloi Rosa rug? It was the first piece we decided on for the room and it set the tone for everything to come. It works beautifully with the mix of bedding you’ll see throughout the photos. The jersey-knit sheets are Eleanor’s favorite because not only does she like the lilac pattern, they feel like a soft t-shirt. All of the bedding is from Garnet Hill, and it can mix and match together in different ways to give E some options.
I had planned on making an upholstered headboard but instead found a secondhand Serena & Lily Pondicherry headboard to reupholster. Or more accurately, slipcover. It turns out we really liked the fabric it came with, so a slipcover will allow us to switch it up and keep the original patterned fabric safe and sound for future use. Slight problem: I’m not an experienced seamstress. It’s going to take me some time to learn how to do the slipcover, so I draped the fabric over top as best I could to give you an idea of what it will look like with the different bedding combinations. Which version do you like best?
Obviously the bed in a bedroom, especially when it takes up as much space in the room as it does here, has a huge impact on the entire look. The tone on tone look quiets the design and is in line with my original intent for the room. E prefers the slipcover option too — every big decision in the room was made together.
The slipcover will be made from Fabricut Devon wool fabric in Orchid with Lotus piping. Curves and piping on a huge upholstered piece for someone with the cheapest base model sewing machine from a decade ago. Ambitious! I’ll figure it out.
I recovered a small ottoman with Inner Circle fabric to give E a place to perch besides her bed. I also figured out how to make functional Roman shades!
I’ve wanted to use this Edie Stroheim fabric for years. It looks amazing in E’s windows, and I love that red/orange Spice color against the walls and trim. And friends, I see that some of you have doubted this particular fabric choice perhaps more than anything else in the room. I get where you’re coming from! It works because the wood tones in the dresser and floor are very orange, and the red in the rug has a lot of warmth to it (rather than being a primary bright). Also, take into account the sun streaming through the linen, and it all just works. I adore it.
I stole my favorite decorative pillow from the guest room because it looked so dang good with the bedding, but most of the time E will probably have the other one in here (with the horse print). She says this one is too bumpy for her. It’s almost like kids don’t realize that sometimes the pretty pillows you put on the bed are just for show and they aren’t always the most functional thing but we buy them and put them there only to take them off each night and put them back in the morning, but I digress.
The nightstand is from Target, and I used one of the original Art Deco handles from her dresser on it to tie the two together. A nightstand with both a drawer and a shelf is always optimal, and E’s radio is tucked underneath so she can listen with (or often without) headphones in bed. The BB8 is her alarm clock.
Opposite the bed is the entrance to the room, and Eleanor’s closet. Most of her toys are on shelves in the closet, but I rehung the circular shelf that was in the room before for E to display some of her favorite things.
Books, books, books on a low Parsons bookcase. She’s a voracious reader! (Takes after her mom and dad. *dusts shoulders off*) We had to pare the books down quite a bit to get them to fit, but she had a lot that she had outgrown so those got passed down to her little brothers and it worked out.
The details in Eleanor’s room will no doubt change over time. That’s what will let this room grow and change with her as she moves on from her tween years. Will she always love decorating with horses and cute animals? Maybe, but that’s for her to keep or change as she decides.
We kept the art that was in the room before, just shuffled it around some. The hanging bird was from Land of Nod years ago, the cats are a vintage tea towel hung with dowels, and the “just be cool” banner was a favor from when I took a video editing workshop that DesignLoveFest taught.
The silhouette art is actually a quilt! It used to hang in our living room ages ago, before Eleanor was even born. It was a made by an Etsy seller, long out of business (Dream of Stars), and I stretched it over canvas stretcher bars.
The antique Art Deco dresser was a Facebook Marketplace find. That and the Pondicherry headboard are probably two of my best FB Marketplace finds ever! E is a lucky girl.
The bed itself is from Tuft & Needle. E went from a twin size to a full (that was important to her — I think it makes her feel more grown up), so she needed a new mattress. It’s sitting on a box foundation and metal base that has supports to attach the headboard. The bed is so comfortable, it’s been a tempting distraction to me while working on her room all these weeks! Like, maybe a quick nap might be in order? Zzzzzzz.
Her room glows beautifully at night. The Crystorama Truax Pendant in the center of the room is oversized (16″ diameter, which is larger than the globes I have in our much larger double parlor), but it provides a dramatic sense of scale. There are three candelabra bulbs inside, so it’s bright without being harsh.
Flanking the headboard are a pair of POP Wall Sconces from Blueprint Lighting. They look like eyeballs and I love them! A happy bit of happenstance is that the headboard I found had curves that perfectly mirror the circles of the sconces. I hung colorful tassels from World Market to zhush them up a bit but if they look too little kid for E as she gets older, she can take them off and they’ll look cleaner and more modern.
I wasn’t sure about also including a task light on the nightstand. E says she can read by the sconces, but the task light is far brighter and I thought she may like it. It’s the same light she had before (from Target a few years ago).
The bookshelf got a pair of small resin lamps lamps from Target which were very cute and super affordable at $20 each. They came in pink and black versions too, but the green looked prettiest. The pink gourd lamp that used to be on the dresser before got moved over to the dresser. It was yet another lamp from Target (I think they’re always a great source for cute, inexpensive lighting for the kids’ rooms).
Thank you for following along as this room came together. It has been one of the most fun makeovers I’ve done because it was a true collaboration between me and my daughter. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing it come together as much as we have!
I’ll work to get all of the sources listed on the Shop Our House page and will also add them below!
Pondicherry Headboard, Serena & Lily
Warwick Wood & Rattan Side Table, Target (Threshold)
POP Wall Sconces, Blueprint Lighting
Truax Pendant, Brian Patrick Flynn for Crystorama

Buying the Best Ceiling Fans: Factors to Consider
Choosing a ceiling fan needn’t be complicated. Let’s look at the important factors.
Ceiling Fan Size
We use the room size in square feet to determine the fan size. You’ll want a small fan for a small room and vice versa for a large room. For rooms that are less than 50sqft maybe the hallway, walk-in closet, or the laundry room, a fan that’s less than 29 inches is recommended.
You will require up to 36 inches on a fan for rooms up to 75sft, up to 42 inches for 100sqft rooms, 52 inches for 225sqft rooms, and 56 inches for large living rooms up to 400sq.ft.
Ceiling Height
Low ceilings are less than 8ft. For these, you will need flush mount ceiling fans because they do not leave much space between the motor and the ceiling but are still able to circulate enough air. When you have a standard ceiling 8-10ft, the fan needs a downrod up to 5 inches so the fan won’t be too close to the ceiling.
Long downrods are required for high ceilings more than 10ft, while sloped ceiling adapters are needed if you have a ceiling that slopes more than 32 degrees. With the right tools, installing your ceiling fan should not be a problem.
Consider your Budget
Ceiling fans range in price from under $100 to over $300. Inexpensive ceiling fans are pretty basic and do not necessarily come with light fixtures. All you can expect is a pull chain control. With more to spend, you can get more style, better lighting options, accessories, and better finishes.
If you are not pressed for price, then nothing should hold you back from getting a premium fan. You will be dealing with beautiful light fixtures, LED lighting, handcrafted blades and handcrafted glass, quality tiles and the like.
Hardwired vs. Remote Controlled Fans
Remote controlled fans come with receivers that allow you to control the fan without accessing a wall socket. The receiver needs maintenance from time to time unlike hard-wired that are wall-controlled. When buying into a fan that has a light, ensure that you have two hot wires instead of one. It allows you to control the fan and the light separately.
If your ceiling fan comes without a light and you want to install one, you can still do with this simple guide.
