Like all conifers, Douglas fir is a softwood with a lower hardness rating than many other types of wood, including hardwoods like cherry and maple. Nonetheless, it is stronger and more resilient when compared to other softwoods.   Of all the woods, it has the highest strength to weight ratio. It is regarded as one of the earth's strongest woods in terms of bending and compressive strength. The wood fibers' durability and pliability make Douglas fir an excellent log home building material.

SUDBURY, Ont, June 30 - By the end of next week, 1.000 men now unemployed in Sudbury will have been given work, men close in touch with the labor situation here predicted to-day. Oscar Lattinen, woods tendent of the Pigeon Timber Company, of Port Arthur, is in Sudbury today hiring 500 pulp-peelers to be sent at once to the company's camps in Thunder Bay district.

The Canadian Pacific Railway Company has recalled 200 of its old employes, to commence work Monday morning. This includes bridge and timber gangs, track men, and trainmen.

About 150 men are awaiting medical examination before starting work in the mines of the district, and it is anticipated that another 150 miners and smelter workers will be hired next week.

The Pigeon Timber Company is seeking French-Canadians, particularly, with Finns a second choice, Mr Lattinen stated. He leaves tomorrow for Sturgeon Falls where he hopes to recruit another 150 experienced woodsmen.

Indicative of increased activity on this division, the Canadian Pacific Railway reports that car loadings for the week ending June 27 were 687. more than 50 percent. above car loadings during the same week of 1932.
