Elevate Your Game: Choosing the Right Men's Soccer Jerseys
1. Understanding the Significance:
Soccer jerseys symbolize unity and equality, as every player, regardless of their role, dons the same uniform. When fans wear men's soccer jerseys, they're connecting with teams on a personal level, reflecting solidarity and support. Choosing the right jersey, such as the Canada men's soccer jersey, extends beyond mere fandom. It’s about being part of a shared journey of triumphs and challenges, understanding each jersey’s story, its players, and what it represents on a global stage.
2. Comfort Meets Functionality:
When it comes to active sportswear, comfort is non-negotiable. High-quality men's soccer jerseys ensure ease of movement, breathability, and durability. Advanced fabrics aid in managing moisture, keeping players dry and comfortable. While fans might not face the physical rigors professionals do, wearing a jersey with similar high-grade material enhances the overall experience, making you feel part of the action whether you're at a live game, a viewing party, or playing a friendly match.
3. Style That Speaks:
Men's soccer jerseys are fashion statements within and outside the stadium. They reflect personal style and the individual’s allegiance. When selecting a jersey, consider the design and whether it aligns with your aesthetic. Vibrant colors, unique patterns, and official badges of men's national teams soccer jerseys can all contribute to a fan’s identity and sense of belonging.

Soccer Player!Anakin Skywalker
࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊
A/N: so u guys voted for him to be on Toronto fc, and I'm so totally going to do that, but in like a full fic. also this kinda sucks but I couldn't figure out another way to put it, but I hope you guys still enjoy it
Warnings: smut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊◜·°˖˚♡࿐‧₊
𓆩𓆪 Soccer player!Anakin would either be a center midfielder and/or a right winger
𓆩𓆪 He would play for Canada Men's National Soccer Team
𓆩𓆪 Subsequently, he would also play for a MLS team, Los Angeles FC, which is how the two of you met
𓆩𓆪 Since you are also a soccer player, on his counterpart team, Angel City FC
𓆩𓆪 You guys met during a promo shoot
𓆩𓆪 When Angel City first formed, your team's media team thought it'd be good publicity
𓆩𓆪 The two of you got paired up for the shoot and you instantly connected
𓆩𓆪 With you being a right winger yourself, the two of you had a lot in common
𓆩𓆪 Most of your conversations during the shoot consisted of soccer and strategies for your respective positions
𓆩𓆪 Anakin had heard of you prior to the shoot, how couldn't he have, you were one of the top players in the NWSL, how could he not
𓆩𓆪 Right after the shoot he asked for your number and you agreed
𓆩𓆪 Fast forward to the two of you dating, and you are pretty much the 'it' couple of soccer
𓆩𓆪 Like you both play for a Los Angeles Team, you both play for your respective national teams -- to the fans it was a match made in heaven
𓆩𓆪 Media and fans would constantly try to spot you guys at the others' game, it had become a fun little game for the fans
𓆩𓆪 And it was pretty easy for the two of you to get spotted as you guys would always be decked out with the other's club merch
𓆩𓆪 During your respective matches the other would always get shown on the Jumbotron a couple of times, at least
𓆩𓆪 Because your club's teams were in the same city, it made it very easy for the two of you since your club's schedules rarely clashed
𓆩𓆪 Anakin would go to every game of yours that he is able to
𓆩𓆪 Likewise, you would do the same for him
𓆩𓆪 It also really helped that your teams played in the same stadium
𓆩𓆪 Anakin is 100% your number one supporter, no doubt about it
𓆩𓆪 He's always so excited to go to your games and he always wears the same jersey your team will be wearing
𓆩𓆪 On the topic, Anakin loves seeing you wear his jersey
𓆩𓆪 During games he'll always look for you in the crowd and you being there is always a huge motivator for him
𓆩𓆪 After games, whoever's match it was, would have so much energy and adrenaline running through them that there's a good chance you fuck
𓆩𓆪 Anakin especially loves taking you to the empty locker room showers and pinning you on the wall, taking you right there
𓆩𓆪 Most of the time, he hasn't even gotten out of his kit yet -- excluding the times he had given his jersey to a fan
𓆩𓆪 He couldn't help it, whether his or your team won or lost, the thrill of having sex with you in the locker room where anyone could walk in spurs him on
𓆩𓆪 He especially loves fucking you when you're wearing his jersey
𓆩𓆪 Doesn't matter if it's his club or national team one, he thinks you look great in the colors
𓆩𓆪 It particularly makes him horny if you're wearing one just as a lounge or sleepshirt
𓆩𓆪 He can't help himself, and the majority of the time it leads to you being bent over the nearest surface with his cock buried deep inside of you

hi k!!! idk if the post abt random asks to get to know someone better expires but, what got u into football AND what got u into hockey??? sports origin stories r always so endearing to me!!!
hi darling!
that post will never expire don't worry i love the asks! they're so much fun to answer. both of my answers are pretty basic though 🤭
edit: this is so so long so im hiding it under the cut, sorry abi 😭
for hockey, it was the canucks 2011 stanley cup run. i'd been around hockey my whole life, all my brothers and my dad play, and hockey culture is canadian culture there's virtually no separation. i'd watched the 2010 olympics as well where canada won gold in vancouver, but i was too young to really process anything about the game, just the emotions after we won. the city was alive, im pretty sure the men's hockey team couldn't walk anywhere without someone buying them a beer. but the canucks 2011 stanley cup run really solidified it for me. the stanley cup (the ucl of hockey) has 4 rounds, each round is a best of 7 series. it lasts a long time. the canucks team at the time was the best it had ever been, with the most skilled players in the nhl. there were so many iconic moments, like the canucks vs blackhawks (their rivals at the time) in the opening round, the aaron rome hit (big, controversial check), and the entire final series against boston. idk how to describe the energy in vancouver, but it was like nothing i'd ever felt before as a kid. everyone had canucks car flags on their cars, and people wore their jerseys to school on game days. i went with my mom and my siblings to a local library to watch game 7 of the finals on a field with so many other people in my jersey and we painted our whole faces. the song the canucks used to skate onto the ice to during that playoffs gives me chills. i watched every game i was allowed to, and i remember having a debate with a teacher at my school (who was a boston fan) about which team was better, and i got so passionate about it i ended up in tears. it made me love the sport, for everything that is, because the city experienced all the joy of getting to the last game, with the cup in the building in vancouver, only to lose on home ice. but we won and lost together as fans! the canucks slogan is "we are all canucks" and i feel that way every time i lovingly hate on the team or watch a game. i am a stats/tactics nerd, but that came later and this is already too long (i can make another post about it if you really want)
for football, this is kind of cliche but the world cup. again, similar to hockey, i had been around football my whole life and i played when i was younger, i also lived close to two retired soccer players who played for team canada and other semi-pro teams in the vancouver area. during the world cup though, everyone at my university was watching, and i was just excited to see the canadian mnt play at a world cup for the first time since 1986. but then i started watching other games, and highlights took over all my social media, and now i am obsessed 🤭 what really sealed the deal for the obsession was the final, i got up early to watch it live and it was honestly the most exciting sports game i had watched in a long time (because the canucks are suffering currently). i had always thought of football as kind of boring because there was less scoring and nobody was allowed to fistfight, but i can admit when i was wrong! and i was very wrong about that. watching leo get crowned world champion >>>> all other feelings idc!

i (plural they/them pronouns) know literally nothing abt any sport at all, and i’ve been wanting to get into hockey, but we don’t actually know how someone becomes a sport fan?? like, how do you pick who to root for? do you just start watching games until you pick a favourite? /genq
the thing abt hockey is that its very interesting and captivating, to me at least, no matter what team u r watching (unless theyre horrifically bad). it’s easier to be invested ofc when its a team you root for, but hockey is such a fast-paced something’s-always-happening sport that if you even look away for a few seconds something big will have happened. as im typing this im watching a game and trying (but failing) to multitask. (SOMEONE JUST SCORED AAAAA) but ANYWAY …
i only started rooting for the new jersey devils because of , well, wttt new jersey!! assuming yall r into wttt, you can always pick the team(s) of ur fav character(s)!
or if ur from the u.s./canada, you can pick the team thats closest to your hometown (or the one in your state/province)!!
you can also just look around for players that seem interesting and start watching their team. for example, there was this one rookie who i found his story/background really interesting, and his style of play as well, so i started watching his team, and i ended up getting attached to a lot of the other players on the team!
if you’re anything like me, and friendships/duos on a team r the quickest way for a team to get to your heart, you could look around for the fun friendships/duos (or ask me) and just start watching! i will warn you though that at the end of the day hockey is a business and those duos could end up being broken up (i was a witness to this happening for another team and it made me so sad and i dont even go there).
i must also warn you that (men’s) hockey (the pro league is National Hockey League, or NHL) is not always as accepting as you would like it to be and there are so many issues within the NHL (and by extension, other men’s leagues and organizations as well), which i will not elaborate too deeply on here, but given the polarized debate over lgbt+ ppl in the united states (i do not know if its the same in canada), i must warn it has bled over into hockey (and sports in general). there are a good bunch of female and lgbt+ fans, though!! especially here on tumblr, but over on twitter as well. we’ve carved out a space for ourselves and we’re here to stay
women’s hockey (the pro league is the Premier Hockey Federation, or PHF) is very fun and much more accepting as well!!! there’s only seven professional teams, and regretfully i havent picked a team yet (but i did watch some of the playoffs), but i think the same suggestions apply to the PHF too (except for the hometeam/location-based if you dont live in eastern canada/the northeastern U.S.) :3
OH one more suggestion: there’s an international tournament going on right now* (IIHF) and some NHL players are playing in it! you can always pick your home country (if theyre playing) there and see what players play on what teams so you can keep up w them outside of the tournament !
*like. right now. at the time of me posting this, there are two games happening at this very moment
and also, hockey is a very contact-heavy sport (less-so in the PHF? im not sure, though, but i think some of the rules are a little different). just mentioning this because i come from a soccer background and for the first month i kept flinching at the big hits. i was def not used to it !
as a last note: wikipedia and youtube are your best friends and will explain rules/gameplay to you if you need it!!!
oh and fuck the chicago blackhawks ^_^
if that was too much information all at once im sorry but i could talk about this sport for AGES

The Big Problem in Dutch Football
_______________________________________
Thank you Tifo. You reminded me of a horrible incident that happened to me the other day. (Trigger Warning: it's long)
Last Week, this one customer ranted to me how he's moving to the Amsterdam from Boston. I'm trying to be happy for him, saying "Oh the Dutch have a great soccer league!" and then he went ballistic on me. I get he's upset, I'm reticent around college sports myself ever since my guidance counselor said no on my desire to go to a four year; but nobody wants to see a wrinkly douchebag berate a cashier in public for talking about sports. (I'm happy my co-workers find college sports entertaining, they are emotionally stronger than I am who demands academic loyalty). Like I get we Boston sports fans are nuts compared to the rest of the US since I am one of those meat headed Boston sports lovers who goes to duck boat championship parades; but get a grip, this isn't Danny Phantom. We didn't resort to throwing flares yet. We don't wear that antisocial hooligan badge with pride.
I look back on this, and I deduced he was on drugs or something since he was wrinkly, pallid, and the pupils of his blue eyes were dilated. He's like 170cm and has a shitty accent and will go ballistic if he sees a sports jersey that says "Boston." He has white hair so you can't confuse him for your run of the mill leftist or your average Andrew Tate fan. He doesn't even deserve to be called an incel or Karen. Even social justice warriors love sports enough to protest over sport washing and major sports bodies holding major tournaments in places with oppressive regimes like a lot of Ultras are already doing. Don't get me wrong, I might not be surprised that the 2026 Men's World Cup could be protested here but then again if people don't want to see games in the US they can go to Canada or Mexico. But nobody wants to see that wrinkly bastard go on a nerd rant over people who like to seeing muscle men play kick balls with mad skills.
He was one of those stupid people that thinks Europe doesn't have sports culture. Which is false. I wish I could tell him clearly that there are hooligans in Western Europe that are more frenzied than your average American fan but no he makes it hard for me to speak properly like I am getting lectured. I couldn't defend myself. We just got a new Department Manager and I don't think she's ready to deal with our town's level of Karen-hood yet because I don't want to see her sad. My last Manager left because of this. I could not finish my shift on time as I broke down started crying for hours, and it involved several meetings with the bosses chastising me for the remainder of the week after he fucked off. Even threatening to discuss this with my mother. This was the third March that involves me having me cry loudly at work and almost getting fired over something stupid. It’s pointless to defend yourself when you work retail. Like I don't give a damn what you like and what you hate about my special interests. If your bullshit rant sessions, scream fests, and arguments threaten my sense of security, school records, and puts my career in jeopardy, I will not be happy with you in the near future. I don't like being yelled at.
AND YOU PROVED ME RIGHT.  Even the Red Sox and Yankees rivalry is less frenzied than whatever the hell Feyenoord or Ajax fans are doing. Heck Honduras and El Salvador started to war with each other in the 80s because of the events unfolding during a soccer/football match. I even watch ultras burn their own tifos or banners with flares over YouTube for fun. To them, Americans act way too detached and wholesome for their liking and protests made by fans are usually rare.

What is Lacrosse? History & Detail Guide
Lacrosse, considered to be America's first sport, was born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, and adapted and raised by the Canadians.
Modern lacrosse has been embraced by athletes and enthusiasts of the United States and the British Commonwealth for over a century. You can learn more about lacrosse on my official blog only at lacrossehalt.com with complete & in-depth details.
The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Anyone can play lacrosse -- the big or the small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse.
An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in men's and women's lacrosse. Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which must be mastered by the player to throw, catch and scoop the ball.
Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing team sports in the United States. Youth participation in the sport has grown over 138% since 2001 to nearly 300,000.
No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 228,000 high school players.
Lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last six years at the NCAA level with 557 college teams in 2009, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are more than 500 college club programs, including nearly 200 women's teams that compete at the US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates level.
Brief History
With a history that spans centuries, lacrosse is the oldest sport in North America. Rooted in Native American religion, lacrosse was often played to resolve conflicts, heal the sick, and develop strong, virile men. To Native Americans, lacrosse is still referred to as "The Creator's Game."
Ironically, lacrosse also served as a preparation for war. Legend tells of as many as 1,000 players per side, from the same or different tribes, who took turns engaging in a violent contest. Contestants played on a field from one to 15 miles in length, and games sometimes lasted for days. Some tribes used a single pole, tree or rock for a goal, while other tribes had two goalposts through which the ball had to pass. Balls were made out of wood, deerskin, baked clay or stone.
The evolution of the Native American game into modern lacrosse began in 1636 when Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary, documented a Huron contest in what is now southeast Ontario, Canada.
At that time, some type of lacrosse was played by at least 48 Native American tribes scattered throughout what is now southern Canada and all parts of the United States.
French pioneers began playing the game avidly in the 1800s. Canadian dentist W. George Beers standardized the game in 1867 with the adoption of set field dimensions, limits to the number of players per team and other basic rules.
New York University fielded the nation's first college team in 1877, and Philips Academy, Andover (Massachusetts), Philips Exeter Academy (New Hampshire) and the Lawrenceville School (New Jersey) were the nation's first high school teams in 1882. There are 400 college and 1,200 high school men's lacrosse teams from coast to coast.
The first women's lacrosse game was played in 1890 at the St. Leonard's School in Scotland. Although an attempt was made to start women's lacrosse at Sweet Briar College in Virginia in 1914, it was not until 1926 that Miss Rosabelle Sinclair established the first women's lacrosse team in the United States at the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland.
Men's and women's lacrosse were played under virtually the same rules, with no protective equipment, until the mid-1930s. At that time, men's lacrosse began evolving dramatically, while women's lacrosse continued to remain true to the game's original rules.
Men's and women's lacrosse remain derivations of the same game today, but are played under different rules. Women's rules limit stick contact, prohibit body contact and, therefore, require little protective equipment. Men's lacrosse rules allow some degree of stick and body contact, although violence is neither condoned nor allowed.
Field lacrosse is sometimes perceived to be a violent and dangerous game, however, injury statistics prove otherwise. While serious injuries can and do occur in lacrosse, the game has evolved with an emphasis on safety, and the rate of injury is comparatively low.
Ensuring the safety of participants is a major focus for US Lacrosse and its Sports Science and Safety Committee, which researches injury data in the sport and makes recommendations to make the game as safe as practicable.

With just over two months until the world’s finest soccer federations battle it out for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar anticipation is rising to a fever pitch, and Nike(NYSE:NKE +3.79%) is adding fuel to the footy fire with the reveal of their home and away federation jerseys for the World Cup’s latest installment. The Swoosh is representing 13 countries in total — the USA, England, France, Poland, Qatar, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Canada, Croatia, Australia, South Korea and Brazil — and each design celebrates the rich football culture of its home country.
Highlights include the USA’s away jerseys, which make use of an ice dye-inspired pattern, the jaguar-inspired details on each of Brazil’s kits, the diagonal details on Portugal’s uniforms (inspired by how footballers will wrap a flag diagonally around their bodies after a victory) and the updated checkerboard pattern that can be seen on Croatia’s kits. All 26 jerseys use a seamless knit, perfected through 4D modeling, that provides precise ventilation and reinforcement, and feature Nike’s advanced Dri-FIT ADV technology.
A lifestyle element is at play as well, with casual apparel like hoodies, sweatpants and T-shirts inspired by each country’s kits set to release. Between the jerseys and the lifestyle apparel, more than 75% of the collection is made with 100% recycled polyester, making for the most eco-friendly soccer apparel offering from Nike to date.
“Our new team collections represent the latest example of how we serve athletes with pinnacle product innovation from Pitch to Street,” said Scott Dixon, the VP of global men’s football at Nike. “With 5 billion fans across the globe, no other sport brings people together more than football. That’s why we’re committed to bringing our best to the world’s biggest stage—and everywhere else—and building the most joyful, brilliant Nike football community ever.”
Expect the home and away jerseys for most of the federations to release exclusively to Nike members today, September 15. A more general release of the full collection will go down on September 21.

we might be hollow (but we're brave) [jan x jackie] - pinkgrapefruit
A/N - hey! incase you hadn’t noticed i’m in love with this ship and I had these lyrics and timestamps in my google docs for months with branjie but it just wasn’t fully fitting. thanks to Alex for betaing and i hope you enjoy it! let me know what you think <3
*
we might be hollow (but we’re brave)
We’re never done with killing time
Can I kill it with you?
‘Til the veins run red and blue
1 7 0 7 - 0 3 - 1 5 - 2 0 0 9
The car hums, low and hoarse as Jackie waits in the school lot. She’d offhandedly promised to pick up her english partner and all of a sudden she’s regretting it, twenty minutes late and low on fuel. She switches it off, flicking the key, and then back on again, hoping not to burn out the fragile engine.
She runs out of the school sweaty and flustered, gym bag slung haphazardly over her shoulder and for a second Jackie is fixated on the way Jan’s baby hairs have plastered themselves across her forehead. The smaller girl slings her bag through the open back window, watching with a smirk as Jackie cringes - sending a warm smile in gratitude.
They play the music loud and keep the air con on low, just cool enough to dry Jan’s hair without the native New Jerseyan complaining about how it’s warmer in the arctic. Jackie’s from Canada, she doesn’t really care.
Jan gives vague directions to her home as and when she sees fit, often directing Jackie to take turns she didn’t even know existed when they’re already almost past them. It drives the brunette mad as she abuses the car’s delicate steering, all to navigate the New Jersey suburbs.
What she does notice is they end up barely two streets over from her own house. A standard three bed, two bath, decent garden house that looks just as identical as every other one in the neighbourhood.
It’s painted blue. Jackie thinks it fits.
They spend the early evening reading excerpts of Romeo and Juliet to each other on Jan’s porch. The blonde reads on the porch chair as it swings aimlessly in the warm early spring breeze. She’s still in her cheer uniform and Jackie doesn’t have a chance to ask how she manages both cheer and soccer. Jackie barely manages hockey.
They eat homemade ice cream sundaes and watch the sunset over the eerie glow of the street lamps until Jan complains she can’t see the pages anymore and Jackie has long since stopped making notes on prose and characters.
They don’t talk about school tomorrow because they won’t see each other. Jan asks if she will pick her up. Jackie says yes.
We come around here all the time
Got a lot to not do, let me kill it with you
0 7 3 2 - 0 4 - 0 2 - 2 0 0 9
Jackie gets a text at half past seven telling her quite emphatically that Jan is running late. There is no question posed that Jackie can discern on the Nokia n95 screen - the glare from the early morning screen compromising her vision anyway - but she grabs her rucksack and the keys to the car and swings round the corner anyway.
She rationalises it by telling herself that it’s on the way to school anyway. It is.
She pulls up and Jan is sat on the porch steps in a pastel pink denim miniskirt and a glittery letterman jacket. She skips to the car and slides onto the front seat with a telltale squeak of bare legs on leather, throwing her bag onto the backseat in a way that still makes Jackie cringe even after two weeks. She smells of lemongrass and vanilla.
The blonde giggles and Jackie catches her mouth curving up in the reverse mirror, so she lets Jan pick the music and just focuses on the gear stick and anything else in her control.
She watches as the blonde sways to Fifteen by Taylor Swift, belting out the lyrics like she can feel them in her soul. They’re sophomores but they were freshmen last year and to be honest, from what she knows of Jan, she wouldn’t be surprised if that was her life.
They pull into the school parking lot to the sounds of Fearless and even Jackie cracks a smile at the way Jan is beaming. They have five minutes before they need to be in school and Jackie averts her eyes as Jan twists awkwardly to grab her bag from where it ended up on the floor, skirt riding up so the brunette can see the plum lace of her panties. She gulps and pulls out her well worn copy of Little Women instead. Not watching as Jan quickly reviews her AP Biology textbook.
“Thanks Jackie! You’re the best,” Jan calls as she slams the rickety car door on the third attempt.
“Anytime Jan.” And Jackie finds she means it.
You pick me up and take me home again
Head out the window again
We’re hollow like the bottles that we drain
0 1 2 5 - 0 7 - 1 7 - 2 0 0 9
Jackie’s phone vibrates under her pillow at one in the morning on a friday. They’ve been on summer break for a month and Jackie hasn’t really done much but she’ll admit she’s missed Jan. Until she woke her up that is.
She answers it with a defeated sign, tugging on her oversized Van Halen t-shirt until it feels decent even though no one is going to look into her tiny bedroom. The light filters through the window in a way that makes it feel like she’s in a weird horror film and she remembers why this is called the witching hour.
“Come over Jack, I’m bored,” comes the whine from down the phone and Jackie has to stifle a laugh even though she knows how much trouble she could get in for this. She sighs. She can’t really argue -  doesn’t want to. She’s always been called boring. She doesn’t want to be anymore.
“I’m coming Jan, gimme five.”
She tugs on an oversized jacket and pulls a pair of gym shorts under her shirt, grabbing the running trainers from the bottom of her closet and spritzing a couple of squirts of sandalwood and shea from her almost empty perfume bottle. When she’s pretty sure she looks okay, she pushes up her window and thanks the gods she’s over the porch. It’s well structured and surprisingly easy to climb both up and down (her brother proved it to her last week) and she slides the window shut behind her as she shimmies down stained wood into the crisp summer night.
It’s not cold and the summer moon means it’s not dark either so she manages the walk quite calmly, feeling a freedom she sometimes forgets she has.
Jan’s sat on her porch steps in a pair of grey joggers and a black sports bra, draped in a tartan blanket and with what is unmistakably a bottle of wine gripped between her thighs.
They don’t actually talk for a while, just pass the bottle between themselves taking swigs of it like it’s water until Jan is giggling at a sparrow - the moon making her blonde hair glow in a way Jackie deems completely unfair. She’s ethereal, godlike in this light and Jan wants to tuck some of the escaped strands back behind her ear so she can watch the shadow in the curve of her upper lip.
She wants them to talk about boys, or talk about girls - to delve into who they are because surely that’s how you should spend wine time at two a.m but the wine is all gone and Jan’s cheek is soft on Jackie’s padded shoulder and somehow their fingers intertwine.
She starts humming something under her breath, something old - a song her dad used to sing her to help her sleep and Jan tugs at her hand to make her sing it louder until Jackie is serenading the sleepy neighbourhood with Mama Cass.
She shakes Jan awake just after four as the sun rises down the wide street. Their knees are stiff but Jan stands up, tugging Jackie by the hands into a hug. She’s not sure what it’s for but it’s welcomed and when Jackie clambers back through her window she can smell vanilla.
You drape your wrists over the steering wheel
Pulses can drive from here
We might be hollow, but we’re brave
0 5 0 2 - 0 1 - 0 1 -2 0 1 0
She’s clad in a hoodie and leggings when she pulls up to the big house. The party she was at finished hours ago but she’s told Jan to text her if she needed her and apparently she needs her so she’d put the heating on full blast and grabbed a blanket out of the trunk to wrap the smaller girl in when she came out.
She watches as she walks carefully out of the house, feet bare and stiletto heels in her hands. Jan slides into the front seat quietly. She carefully drops the heels into the foot-well and puts an awful lot of effort into fastening her seat-belt just right until she looks up at Jackie and something snaps.
Her eyes are red and raw and her lipstick is smudged across her chin and she looks so tired Jackie wants to bundle her up, hold her close and never let her go. But she doesn’t.
She places one hand in her lap and drives calmly to an empty house down the road, pulling into the drive and turning the engine off.
Jan is gripping her hand like a lifeline, clammy fingers twisted around soft flesh. In the light of the streetlamp, there are scratched on Jan’s bare thighs and Jackie gulps on reflex - choking back something that could have been a retch if what she’s thinking is true.
She takes a second to compose herself, brushing through Jan’s hair with her free hand. “You okay baby?” She asks quiet and still - trying to keep the situation as tranquil as she can.
Jan takes a huge snotty inhale, broken by sobs, and shakes her head. She tries to speak but she isn’t breathing enough to form words and all that’s coming out is a choked whimper.
“Hey, Jan honey, you’re safe,” she murmurs, “look at me babe.” She repeats it until the blonde will look her in the eyes, her cerulean orbs pooling. “Can I touch you?” Jackie asks, her tone soothing, and Jan nods slowly.
Jackie places a cool hand on her shoulder and feels the sticky sweat against her dry skin. The smell of cheap vodka, beer and mens cologne is filling the car and it makes her feel sick. She’s not a partier or a massive drinker but by the smell alone she doesn’t understand the appeal. She moves quickly, whipping her head around as she remembers the water bottle she keeps in the door. She places it in Jan’s lap and gently coaxes her to take a sip.
After a little while longer Jan rolls her shoulders back and squeezes Jackie’s hand appreciatively. She nods to herself while trying to find her words and Jackie rubs slow circles on her back.
“It, it was twelve and everyone was cheering,“ she starts, slowly, methodically. "And he- he wanted a kiss, which was fine because everyone was kissing and I’d joked last week that I’d kiss him so it was okay,” She pauses, justifying things that don’t need justifying, setting off alarm bells in Jackie’s head to the point where she’s mentally screaming and the story hasn’t even begun.
“But then,” she continues after a sip of water, “at like three, he pulled me aside while Jaida and Gigi were dancing and asked me for a kiss and I said yes because it seemed like the right thing to do.” She’s got silent tears running down her face again and Jackie wants to tell her she doesn’t have to keep going but she’s frozen in place. “But then it, it took a while and he took my hand and he put it down his trousers and he started kissing down my neck.” The words aren’t given tone anymore. They’re cold hard statements of fact that are rattling through Jackie’s ribs, making her fight every urge she has to vomit because Jan’s become her best friend.
“And I didn’t want to do that. I didn’t like him like that and I just wanted a fun kiss. But he made me touch him and I didn’t want that at all.” Jan starts to shake so Jackie pulls the blanket back over her, Keeping one steadying hand on her knee - steadying for the both of them. “So I pulled away and he called me a whore and then I trapped myself in a bedroom and then I texted you and it was awful Jackie. It was terrible and the worst part was I just wanted you.” She sobs openly but the tears run clear now - the mascara washed off her face and she seems lighter and that’s all Jackie could ask for.
“You are so brave Jan,” Jackie says with as much confidence as she can muster. “You are so brave and that man is a coward and a dick if he thinks he can do that to a woman and you are the strongest person I know, don’t you forget that.” She leans her forehead on the side of the blonde’s head and sighs.
“I’m so sorry baby."
“Me too,” Jan murmurs. “Me too.”
I love these roads where the houses don’t change (and I like you)
2 2 5 6 - 0 5 - 2 2 - 2 0 1 0
“Oh God, Oh God, Oh God,” mutters Jackie, knees bouncing, clammy palms on the leather seats.
They’re racing down the empty street, lamps flickering as they pass. If it was any lighter, neighbourhood watch would have caught them out by now because this is almost certainly not within legal speed limits for the suburbs. Jan passes house after house as they try frantically to make it for Jackie’s eleven pm curfew, the wind low and whistling as it cuts the car. They know the stakes.
Jackie’s face has turned a pale shade of white in fear of the reaction she will face, scraping in just under the time agreed. How her mother will react to Jan driving the family car back home, kissing her gently on the cheek and walking two streets to her own home.
They pull up at ten fifty-nine and Jan almost bursts into tears.
“See you tomorrow?” She asks softly, wistfully.
“Yeah,” Jackie exhales, tomorrow.
Where we can talk like there’s something to say (and I like you)
2 3 5 8 - 1 2 - 3 1 - 2 0 1 0
Jan makes Jackie pull over when she notices the time. They’re both too drunk to be driving and too sober to be alone and they’ve got the windows down as the sea breeze tunnels through the car. It smells of sunsets and saltwater and ice cream sundaes and Jackie’s hair and Jan is hooked.
The old car clock ticks quietly above the hum of the engine and the barely-there sound of the waves and Jackie finds pleasure in watching Jan’s eyes fixate on the hand. It swings around, red against the clock face.
Jan catches her staring and her eyes burn blue into Jackie’s deep brown. It’s a cold night but they’ve both pulled the blankets from the back seat and suddenly the blonde is aware of how small the vehicle is because there is not enough room between their faces and-
Their lips touch. Spark. Flicker. Ignite.
And then she’s warm and intoxicated and just a little bit in love but she thinks the dopey smile suits her - heads lolled back on the headrests, hands intertwined.
I’m glad that we stopped kissing the tar on the highway (and I like you)
1 6 2 4 - 0 2 - 1 4 - 2 0 1 1
Jackie drives them to the beach at sunset. They sit in the boot of the car on a picnic blanket in a parking spot that overlooks the crashing waves and it’s an illusion of stillness Jackie struggles to find anywhere else.
They hold hands because no one can see them - drink a bottle of champagne stolen from Jan’s Mom’s wine fridge. The blonde is bundled up in Jackie’s chunky knit cardigan and she looks warm and cosy and just a little bit like home.
“Hold me,” Jan asks, with eyes like saucers and a tone rolling in sugar. Jackie blinks slowly - capturing the image of her girlfriend in this moment before reaching to pull her into her arms. They don’t have much room but Jan somehow manages to straddle her - a hand on each cheek as Jackie grips her hips. The brunette bites her own lip softly and suddenly their mouths are pressed together and she’s not sure if it’s the sea air, the girl or a little bit of both but it tastes like magic and she doesn’t ever want to let it go.
“I love you,” she exhales into her hair - just above her ear.
“I love you more,” Jan whispers onto her collarbone.
“Sure Jan,” Jackie giggles, pulling Jan closer, burying her face into her hair. “Happy Valentine’s day baby.”
We move in the tree streets
0 8 3 5 - 0 8 - 2 8 - 2 0 1 1
“We’re only gonna be four hours away,” Jan mumbles, fingers finding Jackie’s with ease. “Why does that feel like the whole universe?”
They’re sat on Jan’s front steps - she has to leave in an hour if she’s going to make it to NYU for move-in but she’s not quite sure how to put one foot in front of another. Her life is packed up in boxes behind her but her world is holding her hand.
“Four hours baby. That’s all,” Jackie coaxes, “we can do it.” She says it with so much confidence but her bottom lip is trembling frantically. She got a place at Penn State and she’s happy. It’s what she wants -  to be away from her family - to grow. Unfortunately that means being away from Jan too.
“Will we make it?” Jan asks - and it’s so earnest it breaks Jackie’s heart.
“Yes.” Jackie says. And this time her lip is still.
I’d like it if you stayed.

AWIHL/Melbourne Ice Women Primer
*this is mostly going to about the Melbourne Ice Women bc they’re my team oops. If you have any questions/want any info on where to find teams or good league info please hmu! I love this league I will talk about it for hours.
If you aren’t watching women’s hockey, do it, it’s literally so good. I’m a recent convert and it was the best hockey decision I’ve ever made.
Also Australian leagues are really good for learning hockey rules and getting better at looking at the game with a little more depth!
The Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) is Australia’s top women’s hockey league. Its season runs from October to February and there are five teams. Each team plays 12 regular season games and four teams qualify for finals. The finals consist of two semi final games and then a bronze medal and a gold medal match where they play for the Joan McKowen trophy. They play IIHF rules and play full 60 minute games (unlike the men RIP AIHL)
Imports! Teams are allowed to have a total of three imports and are not allowed to have an import goalie (unlike the men’s league. Imagine being dedicated to goalie development in Australia, couldn’t be the AIHL). Imports are players from overseas (usually Canada) who come and play for Australian teams. There are Canadians in the league who aren’t imports because they have Australian citizenship.
Streaming: All games are streamed on Youtube! They’re also at super varying times on Saturdays and Sundays so some games are European/North American friendly!
All the games are played on weekends because the players have regular jobs! It’s a semi professional league so they aren’t paid and typically have sponsors who cover some of the cost of the season. These women are MULTI FACETED!
The league is really fun because everyone supports each other a lot and its way less disastrous than the men’s league. Also the age range on teams is huge because you can start playing for the league when you’re 14 and there are some 30+ year olds on teams.
Teams:
Adelaide Rush: PERFECT for the suffering Adelaide Adrenaline fan. Currently undefeated in regulation after finishing in last place last season. An amazing comeback narrative that is perfect for the hockey fan who loves an underdog and is being disrespected by their own awful teams. Adelaide friends please get around this team, who knows when you’ll see a winning hockey team again! They also have a really good social media presence (as do their men’s team).
Perth Inferno: The newest team in the league. Haven’t done that well this season but their imports are very good and their results aren’t indicative of their overall performance imo. Another underdog team who is totally worth seeing live if you’re from Perth! Honestly I’m a full believe in their ability to turn it around and be awesome. Unfortunately they suffer from being located in Perth and therefore can’t afford to fly a full lineup to their away games. This makes them even cooler imo because they’re still competitive despite having way less players.
Brisbane Goannas: The most neglected of hockey markets in Australia, the land of nonexistent hockey markets. They don’t have a men’s team anymore so QLD fans should totally get around them! Their jerseys are super sexy and imo this is the best team name in the league. They aren’t great but deserve more attention because they’ve managed to keep a team this long! I have a feeling one of the players runs some of their social media, its very fun (especially their Instagram stories)
Sydney Sirens: This is the big scary team of the season. Also undefeated in regulation, they’re kind of like the Canberra Brave or Tampa Bay Lightning of 18/19. Their imports are sisters, one of whom played for the CWHL, and a girl who played for them. I HATE this team they’re really hard to play against and are super skilled. Melbourne v Sydney games are GREAT because the rivalry is real and it’s a rematch of last year’s gold medal game (They play again this weekend 14 and 15 of December.) Their social media presence is also really good!
Melbourne Ice Women: This is my team brace yourself. The Melbourne Ice (MIW) are affiliated with the men’s team of the same name. They’ve won the most championships in the league. I’m telling you if you live in Melbourne and haven’t come to one of these games you’re missing out. The crowd is LOUD and ENTHUSIASTIC because there is a brigade of HABS (husbands and boyfriends) who come and go HARD for the team. They’re really skilled but have probably been underperforming this season. They also have a KILLER back half of the season because they’re playing Sydney and Adelaide. Now for some player info:
Christina Julien #91 F: One of the Ice imports and also the captain. She used to play soccer for team Canada and was nominated to their Olympic squad. A badass athlete who is basically a cheat code on the ice.
Megan Eady #44 D: The other Ice import. Literally such a beast. Said once that she had no idea what she was doing on the Ice which CAN’T be true she’s so good. The HABS sing a song when she scores to the tune of Evie by Steve Wright (Eady, Eady let your hair hang down)
Georgia Moore #12 F: Was the first Australian ever drafted into the CWHL (Nathan Walker eat your heart out). Has played for the team since it joined the league.
Shona Green #10 F: THE trailblazer for women’s hockey in Victoria. She was the first woman to play in a lot of the boys’ leagues growing up and has captained the Ice and Team Australia basically a hundred times.
Jenelle Carson #1 G: Absolutely bails out the team a heap. An amazing goalie whose sister (I think) plays on the team as well. Sings a lot during warmups. Literally just watch her games against Sydney this season she’s amazing.
Marnie Pullin #18 F: She’s 16 and had four points playing against grown women on Sunday. She’s already a beast and is only getting better. It’s just a coincidence her name sounds like Marie Philip Poulin but is it really? Go and watch her goals from the weekend (on the Melbourne Ice Women’s Twitter).
The Poutine Line: A fan favourite line made up of three Canadians: #7 Sarah Dash, #77 Nicole Jones and #19 Steph Conlon. Conlon and Dash are more or less in their first seasons on the team. This line is SO GOOD and FUN. Also Meika Yeo #86 D and Eady are totally honourary members of this line because they’re also Canadian and play at the same time as Poutine a lot.
Literally every player on this team is really fun and amazing and I could probably write heaps about all of them but I’m trying to keep it as short as possible.
Most of the teams have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so give them and the league a follow to keep up with them! Also Women’s Sports Highlights (@ Wsporthilights) on Twitter clips all the best moments of the games so give them a follow too!
