where do you get the strings/threads for your weavings?

i make a lot of my yarn and thread myself (i spin it out of silk, cotton, or wool, and dye it as well) but when i need large quantities or don't have access to my spinning equipment or the time/energy i buy it

for weaving i usually buy my cotton and linen warp yarn from brassard and my wool from lemieux and briggs & little (all are canadian manufacturers, but they can be purchased outside of canada) i buy other yarn from knitting yarn shops both in person and online, and sometimes luck out at thrift stores. romni wool is my favourite yarn shop in toronto, and root studio is my favourite in kuala lumpur

for embroidery i usually use regular dmc cotton embroidery floss or perle cotton, and i buy other embroidery threads on etsy or i find them in craft shops in person. i found a basket of silk embroidery thread in a craft shop in halifax recently, unlabelled, and i've been using those a lot the past couple weeks

So, my great grandfather was a businessman, and at some point he invested into some random gold mine up in Canada. He apparently kept this investment his entire life, to the point where it was literally in his will, and now my grandfather has inherited the investment.

So we’re now the proud part-owners of a Canadian gold mine that has produced a WHOPPING…5 grams of gold.

Since the 1950’s.

So now my grandpa gets checks that are literally worth pennies from this pathetic cringefail gold mine and it’s fucking HYSTERICAL

What have Carrelage, Quaker Dawn and Anzak all got in common? Well nothing very much except for the fact that they're all Long Dogs, they're all bright and cheerful and they're all very lovely.   The only reason they're together at all is because I couldn't decide which one to show you today so I went for the job lot approach.

Quaker Dawn is the handiwork of Elizabeth who stitched it to brighten her winter high up in the wilds of North Canada in a tiny log cabin festooned with icicles and surrounded by hungry bears and foxes.  How romantic.

I have no idea where Marguerite set about creating her Carrelage  but can tell you that it was worked on 16# cloud green Aida using DMC 500 for the borders.  And in an attempt to delay global warming a tad this environmentally friendly lady used threads from her stash for the vignettes.  Bravo.

Jacqui could have been holed up just about anywhere from Sydney Opera House to the old bazaar in Cairo when she stitched her Anzak.  It doesn't really matter in the great scheme of things because there are currently no global restrictions on where you can or can't simply whip out your sampler and indulge yourself.  Now look closely, it's spot the frog time.  Here, borrow my glasses if you can't spot him, he's asleep at the moment.

Trap

A subgenre of hip-hop that emerged in the early 2000s in the Southern U.S., especially in Atlanta. It is characterized by hard-hitting drums, 808 bass, hi-hat rolls, and lyrics about drug dealing, crime and street life. Some of the pioneers of trap include T.I., Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy and Three 6 Mafia.

Conscious hip-hop

A subgenre of hip-hop that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s that focused on themes such as social justice, political awareness, spirituality and Afrocentrism. It was influenced by the civil rights movement, black nationalism and the teachings of Islam. Some of the innovators of conscious hip-hop include Public Enemy, KRS-One, Mos Def and Talib Kweli.

Mumble rap

A type of hip-hop that became popular in the mid-2010s is known as mumble rap. This subgenre features slurred or unintelligible vocals, simple beats, and memorable hooks. Some people criticize mumble rap for its lack of meaningful lyrics and technical ability. Notable artists in this category include Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos, and Lil Yachty.

Wild and crazy guys  - 1965-1975

The junk business attracted so many crazy individuals that it would take me forever to jot down their names and give at least one story per guy to back up these claims. My customers were basically Jewish scrap  dealers who were the largest in their market area.  They had to be large wholesaler dealers to be able to sell and ship to our national consumers. Almost all were first- or second-generation family businesses. Most were well off financially and enjoyed the perks of having a cash business.  As Les Finkle from Oakland once said on the subject, “What is so great about cash? It can only buy, clothes, jewelry, art, food, booze, and women; well come to think about it, it is pretty good!” Although the fun stories about the junk dealers will come, I want to write about two adventures with a DMC employee, Roger Bowler. I worked with Roger when he was part of the DMC dismantling Division in St. Louis on a job in Canada, and when I lived in LA and we did a job in Mercury, Nevada.  When I moved back to St. Louis as DMC’s president, I made him quit his current job at Chemetco and be our VP of Purchasing.  

In the late 60’s most copper producers published and lived by fixed “public consumer prices”, which was what they charged their customers for their copper rod, etc. The Canadian (Noranda) price for rod was about 20 cents per pound below what the US scrap market was, because the finished rod price was fixed, but scrap fluctuated daily.  Percy Weismann, who sold DMC his Canadian scrap company, was running our plant in St. Jerome, Canada where they were chopping insulated copper wire. He was buying scrap wire from all of the wire makers and saw a real opportunity.  Why not buy rod from them at the published price and ship it to the USA as scrap?  Good idea, but how would you get finished rod across the border through customs as anything but high duty rod?  Easy, have Kenny Fischer and Roger Bowler go to Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit) open Percy’s railroad cars full of new wire rod and beat the rod with axes and hammers until it looks like scrap.  Then ship it to Olin Brass as scrap and make about $10,000 per carload. It was almost that easy and quite a learning experience. We had to hire about 10-day workers in Windsor, go to the rail yard, find, and open the cars and then do our work.

the top 2 teams were stronger than the rest of the field by a good margin. Layla and Alex did really well - this RD incorporates the strength of their skating and their flow more organically than their Run-DMC one did. in 2nd ahead of 3rd by almost 6 points. they got level 4 in the 1st part of the pattern and got 2 key points in the reversed part of the pattern that's been a challenge all season. they skate so well together - that's one thing they have over the 1st place team, who are new to each other

but they are strong- Nguyen/Giang got level 4 in both parts of the pattern. it still drives me crazy about their coaching team how much and how often they manipulate the tempos of the music they use - i immediately go ugh when they start their program because they've slowed Dancing in the Street to about 105 beats per minute when the original is more like 128-132. that's not the same song when you change it that much. and don't get me started about the subject of their FD music. the packaging tends to be clunky, and their program choices 👎 but that's not on the team, who did very well

watching the junior field overall, you see skaters with good basic skating skills - Canada has strong coaching across a good number of schools - but as a whole, anyone with obvious dance training, with extension, flexibility and carriage would stand out. i know some of that is time and developing the strength, skating and partnering skills to have the freedom to show that on the ice

tickets were $35 for junior short/rhythm dance day and the crowd was tiny - it's a big arena, but still, it's a shame that they performed for so few people. tickets are $40 to see them today-- i know it's mid-week, but i wonder if making tickets less or free and doing outreach would bring in more people, or if that's hard with junior events

kirsten moore-towers and kaitlyn weaver have about the right tone as a broadcast pair for juniors - kirsten's chirpy and positive and feeding kaitlyn good questions. i'd take her over ted any day

and mitch islam with his team - maybe the first event we've seen him ❤️ the way the skating community rallied for him and his baby in the fall, i imagine and hope he's surrounded by friends
