The Magicians last week gave us one of the better episodes so far because of the effort that went into the structure of the story overall. It’s great to see that there is no such thing as an insignificant character, and we now finally have major events for this season to build-up to. This week gave us a lot to look forward to when understanding just how big this world really is from different perspectives.

Considering the turn of events for the Hedge Witches last week, it wasn’t too surprising to see Kady more involved in the main storyline again. Some like myself were feeling impatient to see what she was up to, but it was all worth the wait for her to begin forging her own path towards reclaiming this world lost to The Order. Stronger ties to the Hedges didn’t hurt at all, especially when it brought back someone as charismatic as Pete. He has a presence you appreciate because sometimes the others can be a little too worn down for their own liking. It also helps that he has reached a point where he can at the same time meet us halfway with the rage that others should be experiencing about current events. With that said, Kady and Pete tied very well into what Quentin and Julia needed to do in order to continue making progress with the monster.

Where this led them was a delightful surprise. The minute you saw that Felicia Day was once more involved with the series as well, you had to wonder what part she would play. You knew that she would be trouble, so it was a matter of what form that would take. It was all so very priceless when conveniently she would become their next big obstacle. Fantasy and reality clash in many ways in this universe, but none like the way Poppy does with a certain supernatural element.

Picking up from last week’s episode we now have Fen who has set off on what she had hoped to be her personal quest. This was a lot more humorous than I expected it to be. Not a bad thing either. One thing we have gotten used to by now is the fact that Fillorians can be quite naive. This was just one of those times where it was harder to ignore than usual. This is not to say that Fen isn’t badass in her own right, but clearly the role of quester isn’t something she is used to. It helped that once again Margo was matched with someone who was her polar opposite. Their first obstacle was one of the most unique encounters because this person took complete advantage of that naivety, and in the face of one impatient Margo who you know was just waiting for her opportunity to pounce someone in her way. While Margo does have her tendency to steal the spotlight, they did not allow us to forget that this is Fen’s quest. Where it ultimately led by the end of the episode was quite the twist because it gave her insight into a decision that is very out of character for her.

Alice, Alice, Alice. My brother was telling me once that he felt sorry for how depressing her life has become. However, I argued that her own unhappiness was a trickle effect of so many poor choices stacking up, on top of one too many toxic relationships that she never confronted head-on. Once again that become so clear through her confrontation with Zelda again, and where that took her from there. I mean, it made sense that Alice would at some point find her way back home again. She would have to when nothing about the loss of her father was completely resolved. Especially when it came to how she and her mother moved forward. The tension was more of the same, but at least a lot of their troubles were brought to the surface in a way that wasn’t side-stepping the truth. How things ended between herself and Sheila was admirable. Not for Alice in particular, but what her character was able to bring out in Sheila. Camryn Manheim is an excellent actress and brought a fresh new perspective in being a magician to the show at this stage.

It was a small bit, but when the time came for Penny 23 to give this message to Kady, the execution of this scene made exactly how you would picture it. When you know Kady, you know what she wants to hear versus what she does not. This does make you wonder what the end game is for our Penny, though that will be a story continued at a later date.

The Magicians “Home Improvement” made a lot of progress on all ends of this storyline, while somehow having fun with it all. This week was an excellent reminder that not everything is bleak. Even if it is taking some time for anyone to get to where they wanted to be when this season began.
