2024 Genesis G70 AWD 3.3T Sport Prestige Review: Powerful and Luxurious

Genesis shows what entry-level luxury can look and feel like with its G70 sedan, in a word, Gorgeous!

G70 shows what the best in entry-level luxury can be … Sometimes things don’t change all that much within a couple years of a car being refreshed, as the Genesis G70 was in 2022. So this 2024 model has all the benefits of that model, a few improvements, but a few issues that still may limit its appeal, especially to a family with tall passengers expected in the rear seat. bucket of facts here. This is one of my favorite f1 things ever, apologies for how long it ended up being:

In the 1980’s, formula one teams, notably BMW, added toluene to their fuel mixtures. If that word sounds like it’s probably dangerous, that’s because it is — most people know it as rocket fuel. It’s extremely poisonous and carcinogenic, but did have some upsides! For one, it was less volatile [citation needed] than what they had been using, making is slightly less dangerous in the event of a crash (by 1970’s-80’s F1 standards that just means in only turned into a small bomb most of the time). It was also denser and burned faster, so the same amount of toluene could give much more power than the standard F1 fuel.

While the new fuel did allow them to run higher turbo pressures, it did it have a tendency to increase turbo pressure as it was run during the race, and everyone ran turbos at this time. They had to dial back the turbo pressure from what it’s max could’ve been, just to compensate for the power of the fuel — this mitigated the admittedly high likelihood that the engine decided to submit its two weeks notice on two seconds of warning (read: it caught on fire and sometimes kinda maybe sorta just exploded).

Modern f1 fuel has an RON octane rating of 95-102. The toluene aided fuel had an RON octane rating of 120+. For context, your car probably runs on about 87 RON. For those unfamiliar, RON octane ratings measure how much compression fuel can be put under before it sparks, which is how engines work: compress fuel, spark, make power (I can explain that better if you want but short version is that). This incredibly high octane level allowed the engines of the time to be run at a much higher compression, which had a myriad of bonuses to the cars.

Current F1 regulations are 1.6 litre V6 engines that rev to 15,000 RPMs (max allowed) and produce a max of 850 BHP (horsepower) when they’re pushing the edge of their abilities without aid of electric components like H/KERS, which is used to boost the cars to around 1,000 BHP.

Brabham-BMW’s 1983 engine took Nelson Pique to his WDC that year. It was a 1.5 litre inline 4 (so smaller than current) and produced 12,000 RPMs, as the restrictions were a bit tighter there back then. Without electronic aid like today and a smaller engine than your standard Toyota Camry, it easily produced 850 BHP at race trim, the version built to last a whole race. When in qualifying trim, with everything tuned to maximum to get the most out of the car without it blowing up, it ran at 1,250 BHP. Original testing put it at producing over 1,400 BHP, but BMWs testing facilities couldn’t measure past that — the car put out more power than they could even register.

The teams also had a sneaky loophole: the amount of fuel allowed to be held at once in the car (refueling was banned at this time) was effectively limited to how large the gas tank could be. The teams realized that they could literally freeze the fuel and store it at cold temperatures. This compacted the fuel, allowing them to put more fuel into the gas tank — more fuel per fuel, really. This allowed drivers to be more aggressive and push harder more often, not having to worry about running out of fuel.

In case this whole toluene thing seems bad, don’t worry! It’s only used in nail polish, rubber, adhesives, and paints :3

This morning I woke up at the insane time of 3:15 AM. Shockingly, I felt well rested. I read in bed for a while, finally finishing a book the library automatically renewed twice. I did not care for the ending. It seemed like the author looked at his watch or calendar and realized there's a deadline, so time to cram a lot of action and resolution into nine pages and call it done.

Then I got up and started laundry. I like doing laundry. That's why my wife doesn't care what I spend on a washer and dryer. She's relieved of laundry duty.

Of course I don't waste money on some machine that gives me a choice of chimes to signal the end of the cycle. I have a solid, practical washer/dryer combo. If they were cars they'd be Toyota Camrys, the XLE trim level, and probably with the V6.

After brewing and ingesting a fair amount of coffee I washed all the bedding in the house. Sunrise today was 6:56 AM. Any awake neighbors might have laughed at me because I was hanging sheets, a blanket, and a quilt on my clothesline two hours before the darkness left. Even the bats likely thought I was crazy.

When it finally got light outside I took the dogs to the airport dog park. Plane-watching sucked. We saw some other Aussies, which always makes me smile.'

When Ella, Oliver, and Sulley were tired I brought them home, Then I got my Surly Cross Check out for a ride. I did a ten mile loop around the three Minneapolis lakes I enjoy being at. The weather was perfect.

Later, grocery shopping followed by making the beds and cleaning around the house.

Sulley still had energy. He's a year-and-a-half old. Ella is 12 and Oliver is 10. It really pissed off the older dogs when I took only Sulley for a walk around Lake Harriet. The other two would have been too exhausted to complete the 2.8 mile loop, though Ella would have liked a swim.

Now I think I understand why Sulley did poorly in obedience school. He's rarely on a leash. Between our fenced-in back yard and the mostly fenced-in dog park, that boy isn't used to having a leash on except to go from the car to the park gate or when he's in a brewery.

At the lake the first ten minutes were awkward as he and I figured out leash protocol. Then it got easy. He was very well behaved. Now I'm starting to think of trying another obedience class, after I take him on more leashed long walks.

Top picture is a view of Bde Maka Ska from a bike path. That's the Dakota name that replaced Lake Calhoun as the lake's current name. The second picture is the trolley car that runs from Lake Harriet to Bde Maka Ska. The operator rang a bell to warn Sulley and me to not attempt to cross the street as the trolley approached. It was kind of cute.

Now I'm going to eat a Jimmy John's sub and watch the final season of Succession. I don't like waiting week by week for new episodes. I waited for some time and now I can binge watch it.

Toyota Camry XLE AWD 2025, pneus d'hiver et Audi RS3 d'Unitronic

S’il y a quelque chose de difficile à faire pour un chroniqueur d’automobiles, c’est de « couvrir » un véhicule qui n’allume pas nécessairement les passions. Et surtout, n’allez pas me traiter de « Toyota Basher » puisqu’il s’agit ici de la toute récente Camry XLE.

Je l’avoue, la Toyota Camry ne soulève pas nécessairement les passions même si c’est toujours une des autos les plus vendues en Amérique du Nord, voire même LA plus vendue! En fait, c’est plutôt la faute des consommateurs si cette passion pour la marque a diminué, même si la Camry n’est pas qu’une berline courante. C’est aussi une voiture « championne » en série de stock-car NASCAR! Oui, la Camry peut aussi être une auto sportive! Mais pour le consommateur moyen, c’est d’abord une berline fiable dont la réputation n’est plus à faire. Mais comment considérer une berline alors que le marché est plutôt axé vers les VUS de tous gabarits?

La voiture qui m’a été confiée par Toyota Canada la semaine dernière était une belle berline XLE hybride à traction intégrale…en plein le genre d’auto qui devrait satisfaire la majorité des automobilistes québécois (ou même canadiens) pour toutes les saisons.

L’arrière a aussi été revu alors que les designers de Toyota ont ni plus ni moins « adouci » les arêtes de la carrosserie avec moins de fentes que dans le passé. (Éric Descarries)

Notons, au départ, que la Camry a été « légèrement » redessinée pour 2025 affichant un design avant et arrière révisé mais surtout un intérieur revu et une mécanique simplifiée. Les amateurs de Toyota les plus aguerris auront distingué le redesign de l’avant de l’auto, surtout au niveau des calandres et une retouche à l’arrière (que je trouve plus élégant puisque les fentes verticales aux bouts des couvre-parechocs sont disparues). Le toit et les portières sont semblables à ceux de l’année dernière ce qui nous indique que la structure de l’auto aura été reconduite.

Toutefois, à l’intérieur, les retouches sont plus visibles. Le tableau de bord redessiné propose maintenant une instrumentation numérique de 7 pouces et un centre d’infodivertissement dont l’écran peut faire jusqu’à 12,3 pouces. Sachez que Apple CarPlay et Android Auto sont de série. Et, sans qu’on le voie immédiatement, les sièges autant avant qu’arrière ont été revus pour plus de confort.

Quant au coffre arrière, il est semblable à ce qu’il ait toujours été. Il est amplement suffisant pour deux passagers en voyage ou pour le transport de petits objets. Cependant, il pourrait être plus grand…

Toutefois, là où la Camry 2025 diffère, c’est sous le capot. En effet, il n’y a plus qu’un seul moteur au catalogue, soit le quatre cylindres à essence DACT de 2,5 litres combiné à un système hybride électrique devenu la spécialité de Toyota. En effet, vous avez bien lu, il n’y a plus de V6 disponible dans les Camry! Déçu? Faites l’essai du même véhicule avec le quatre hybride et vous comprendrez pourquoi le constructeur ne sent plus le besoin d’inclure le V6 au catalogue. Ses 232 chevaux (légèrement moins puissant que l’ancien V6) suffisent quand même amplement à procurer toute la puissance voulue pour d��placer la Camry. Incidemment, la boîte de vitesses est à variation continue (CVT) et, avec la XLE, on n’obtient que la traction intégrale (une configuration idéale pour les hivers québécois!). Ma voiture d’essai était équipée de pneus Bridgestone Turanza appropriés de dimension P235/45R18.

Sur la route

La Camry XLE (de production) n’est pas une voiture de course, ni une sportive ou une exotique. C’est, je le répète, une simple berline de tous les jours. Toutefois, ce qu’elle fait, elle le fait bien! Et elle le fait encore mieux vu qu’elle met en valeur le principe hybride Toyota qui est, à mes yeux, le meilleur de l’industrie.

Les accélérations ne sont pas étincelantes (avec 0 à 100 km/h en quelque huit secondes) mais elles sont honnêtes tout comme les reprises (mais ce ne sont pas les performances du V6!). La tenue de route n’est pas celle d’une voiture de sport mais la Camry est très stable alors que sa direction est précise. J’aurais peut-être un peu à redire sur le freinage que j’aurais aimé plus puissant et plus convaincant quoiqu’il puisse paraître suffisant pour le conducteur régulier.

Si la Camry hybride est des plus impressionnantes sur autoroute, c’est en ville qu’elle se distingue. Malgré qu’elle accuse un peu d’embonpoint quand vient le temps de la garer, son ensemble électro-mécanique est des plus convaincants pour les déplacements urbains. Le moteur électrique entre plus souvent qu’à son tour en action. Seule ombre au tableau, quand le moteur à essence « embarque », on l’entend (un peu trop)! Voilà un petit chapitre auquel les ingénieurs de Toyota devraient s’attarder, rendre cette interaction plus « transparente », plus discrète.

En ce qui a trait à la consommation, mon calcul à la pompe s’est chiffré à 6,37 l./100 km alors qu’Énerguide estime cette même consommation à 5,4 l./100 km. Il faut spécifier ici que la majorité de mes déplacements s’est faite en conditions urbaines. Cette Camry doit faire face à une concurrence assez vive, soit les Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Kia K5 et Subaru Legacy de ce monde auxquels j’ajouterais les Chevrolet Malibu….en autant que ce véhicule continuera d’être offert! Mon véhicule d’essai affichait un prix de base de 44 950 $ auquel il fallait ajouter 1,08 $ d’Écofrais pour les filtres, 22,50 $ d’Écofrais pour l’huile, 100,00$ de taxe d’accise fédérale pour le climatiseur (qui, je le souligne existe depuis le milieu des années soixante-dix et qui n’a jamais été révisé), 12,50 $ de frais OMVIC et 1860 $ de frais de transport. Le grand total sera alors de 46 946 $ (plus taxes)!

Ma conclusion finale? J’aurais de la difficulté à ne pas conseiller la Camry à celui ou celle qui recherche une berline fiable et intéressante pour ses déplacements de tous les jours. De là à en faire un objet de convoitise…il y a une marge. Qu’importe, la Camry représente, ne serait-ce que par sa fiabilité et son excellente réputation, un excellent choix…si c’est une berline que l’on recherche!

C’est le temps des pneus d’hiver…

OK, c’est le temps! Le temps de passer aux pneus d’hiver. J’aimerais bien aider les lecteurs de ce blogue dans leurs recherches s’ils sont « dans le marché » pour des pneus d’hiver. Mais c’est le temps et l’espace qui me manque ici. Toutefois, puis-je vous suggérer de consulter le site internet Auto123.com  où j’ai publié (en français et en anglais) un dossier très complet sur les pneus d’hiver que l’on peut trouver sur notre marché cette année. J’y traite des pneus d’hiver courants (tant de haute qualité que plus « abordables ») que des pneus dits « homologués » ou conçus pour les véhicules électriques que des pneus pour camionnettes de tout genre.

Depuis des années que je traite et que j’analyse les produits de ce marché, depuis tout récemment, je m’attarde aux pneus dits « homologués », c’est-à-dire des pneus bons autant pour l’hiver que l’été. D’ailleurs j’utilise des Michelin Cross-Climate 2 de cette technologie sur ma propre Lincoln MKZ depuis plus de deux ans et des Nokian Outpost aussi « homologués » sur ma Jeep Wrangler alors que je suis de près l’évolution de Nokian WR G4 (maintenant remplacés par les WR G5) sur la Mercedes C de mon frère et les Hankook Kinergy H4S sur la Suzuki de ma belle-sœur. Jusqu’ici, les résultats sont des plus étonnants. Qui plus est, pas besoin de les changer aux deux saisons!

Cette année, je vais ajouter un jeu de pneus Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT3 à ma liste d’essais. Ces pneus devraient être installés sur une fourgonnette Chevrolet Express 2500 transformée en VR. À suivre…aussitôt que les pneus me seront livrés…

Jusqu’ici, rien de bien spécial pour nous au Québec…sauf qu’il faut savoir que l’auto est aussi commanditée par l’entreprise lavalloise Unitronic et que le design des couleurs de la voiture est signé Guillaume Descarries…Ouaip! Mon fils! Bravo!

Dream Log: 03/22/2024

It took place in my room upstairs. Instead of living where I currently do, it was a strange multiplex structure resembling the family restaurant, Spain/Korea, and a bougie Fountain Valley house. For whatever reason, there were two different doors on my floor. An entry/exit from outside to the other connected multiplexes and down the hall pass was the door for the stairs.

I shared the place with Crespo, so family & friends were always visiting downstairs.

I was hanging out with (E), dickin’ around and watching something on an older blocky TV. That’s when Tim walked in… at this point, I’ve had my peace and no qualms with this garbage tier human, proceeding to question why he’s here. Apparently he was Crespo’s Smash buddy, and this completely made sense to me.

He asked if I wanted to play. For old time’s sake I entertained him with a game, and per usual he had his shitty gamer attitude. Taunting and copying the same characters. I could feel his ego inflating and his superiority complex getting fed… My tunnel-vision kicked in as my muscle memory for the game wasn’t coming back. Unknowingly Tim gave Ketamine in pill form to both (E) and me while we were both distracted. We both took it thinking it was a mint. Our minds were beginning to wander, going in and out of consciousness. I immediately knew Tim was up to no good, making conversation with (E). People were using my room’s entryway to go in and out the house for whatever reason. But I couldn’t snap myself out of the tunnel-vision and wandering mind to stop all of it.

We finally snapped out of it for a quick moment as (E) decided to go home, and I got up to walk her. I feel this guy’s insecurity emitting from him, walking outside.

As we headed to the car, my mind wanders in and out again. I’m back to reality but she disappeared. I panic and see her across the street over a fence, booking it and pulling the most ungraceful parkour maneuver to catch up.

Finally reaching (E)’s car in a one of those shaggy liquor store parking lots with rocks everywhere, we get into her gold/beige Camry V6 but the driver’s seat is on the right side…

She begins to take me home, but now a road into a forest where it begins to get darker. Both our consciences are fading. SHE begins to fade. I asked “what did y’all take about..?”.

We approach a cliff AND everything clicks as I begin to wake up.
