Group D Breakdown
Expected to move on: England, Denmark
Expected to exit in group stage: China, Haiti
England
FIFA Ranking: 4
Reputation:
England is my favorite to win the World Cup. In 2022 they won the European Womens’ championship, cementing their position as a possible winner of the 2023 World Cup. Despite a few major injuries, the Lionesses are in fine form, and have a really solid core group of women with a good mix of veterans and young (but not inexperienced) talent. Their players mostly play at home in the FAWSL, possibly the best women's league in the world. The FAWSL also attracts international talents, so many of these players are already playing with and against their competitors, learning their styles and skills. Their coach Sarina Wiegman has a great record with England, and with the Netherlands in the 2019 World Cup where they made the final.
Player Pool:
There are a couple veterans that deserve a call out, like defender Lucy Bronzeand midfielder Jordan Nobbs, but the energy and heart that makes this England squad different from past rosters comes in a group of younger players. Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, and Chloe Kelly will be playing in their first World Cup, and have been in outstanding form for their English clubs and at the international level.
2019 WWC performance:
England did well in group play, led in scoring by Ellen White, who really came into her own this World Cup. They notably defeated previous runner up, Japan. They had perhaps the easiest path to the semifinals, taking on Cameroon and Norway. England was unlucky to come up against the USA in the semifinals instead of the finals, but they followed up their loss to the USA with a loss to Sweden, unlike 2015.
China
FIFA Ranking: 14
Reputation:
China used to be really good. Asia Games champions a couple times, deep runs into World Cups and olympics, but no Gold Medals. In the past, they have recruited top basketball, track, and volleyball players to play soccer in order to be faster and taller than their opponents. It’s an interesting strategy that hasn’t...not...worked. But it hasn’t really worked, either. They are showing an international comeback, including beating South Korea  in the 2022 Asian Cup Finals. They have kept up with teams close to them in rankings, but will struggle against any team in the top 10.
Player Pool:
All of the players on the team except one  play in China, a league that I do not follow, but one player does play in the USA for Racing Louisville FC, Wang Shuang. Their team looks very different than the squad that represented China in 2019, so standout players are generally unpredictable. I would expect veteran forward Wang Shanshan and defender Lou Jiahui to feature in starting lineups.
2019 WWC performance:
China didn’t play horribly, but they weren’t the team seen in previous years either. They sneaked into the group stage after a loss to Germany by salvaging a tie against Spain. They were eliminated by dark horse Italy in the round of sixteen. In total, they only scored 1 goal in all four games, which means their defense maintained two shutouts and limited opponents’ goals quite well.
Denmark
FIFA Ranking: 18
Reputation:
If any group has the potential for a ranking upset, it is this one. Denmark, although ranked below China, has been testing their mettle against all of Europe, and have shown themselves to be a worthy inclusion to the World Cup. It is not their first, in fact it is their fourth World Cup, even though they haven’t qualified since 2007. They have been on the edge of qualifying for World Cups in the past couple years, and  now the expanded field of teams has allowed them back in the cloche, and I don’t see them wasting their opportunity.
Player Pool:
The Denmark roster boasts players across all of the major leagues in Europe–England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Sweden. Captain Pernille Harder plays for Chelsea FC, one of the best of the best clubs in the world, and is the top all-time goalscorer in Danish football history. Forwards Mille Gejl Jensen and Rikke Madsen have found success at their American club, North Carolina Courage, in the 2023 summer season, which likely helped them onto the roster.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify
Haiti
FIFA Ranking: 55
Reputation:
Haiti has never played in a world tournament, and their narrow qualification was a very proud moment for the entire country, and for the larger CONCACAF region. They will probably struggle against the other teams in their group, but it will be valuable experience for the players going forward.
Player Pool:
Melchie Dumorney, midfielder, won the CONCACAF qualifying young player of the tournament, and scored the two decisive goals against Chile to qualify for the World Cup. There are a few players that play college soccer in the USA, but the majority of them play for smaller clubs in France, which does give them experience playing european-style soccer.
2019 WWC performance:
Did not qualify

I hate the footballing takes of " x player isn't even y nationality why are they playing for y country" most often its seen with England and France. Let's take Mbappe. His father is from Cameroon. But Mbappe was born in France, raised in France, developed through the French Footballing Academies. There is no reason why Mbappe is not French, and people arguing otherwise I have to ask if you'd be saying this about a white player? Cause chances are no, you wouldn't. Giroud is of Italian descent from both his grandmother's yet very few people will question if he's French because he's white.
Obviously the international footballing landscape would look a lot different if all these players chose to play for the country they have ethnic origins like a lot of the Morocco players did which is why they did so well this World Cup BUT denying a player the right to represent and be proud of the country they were born in just rubs me the wrong way. I don't need to know where everyone in the French squad have family roots, most of them were born in France. They are French. End of story.

‘Different territory’: How African football underdogs caused AFCON upsets
Abidjan, Ivory Coast – As the quarterfinal stage of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off on Friday in Ivory Coast, none of the five teams highest-placed teams in the FIFA ranking of December 2023 will feature.
Reigning champions Senegal, 2022 World Cup semifinalists and pretournament favourites Morocco, 2004 champions Tunisia, two-time champions and 2019 winners Algeria, and seven-time AFCON kings Egypt have all been eliminated. Other top teams like five-time champions Cameroon and four-time winners Ghana, have also exited the competition.

In a tournament which has come to be defined by the frequency of upsets, it is the unlikely progression of some of the continent’s lesser-fancied sides that is making the headlines.
As it stands, four of the last eight have never won the competition so the chances of a first-time champion are 50-50. These uncrowned four include perennial underachievers Guinea and Mali, which though boasting talented squads since the turn of the millennium, have never been able to progress beyond the last four. But there are also Cape Verde and Angola who have never even reached the semifinals before.
And some of the other results have been unbelievable: Equatorial Guinea triumphed 4-0 over Ivory Coast, even as Cape Verde won 2-1 against Ghana.
“The results you see in the AFCON are impossible at the Euros or Copa America,” former Nigerian forward Victor Ikpeba tells Al Jazeera. “Imagine the Faroe Islands beating Germany, or England losing to San Marino. Venezuela beating Argentina or Brazil rarely happens, but in African football it is possible.”
In addition, this edition has witnessed an unprecedented number of goals: With 105 already scored in advance of the quarterfinals, it has already surpassed the tallies from the past two editions.
The uptick in goals was expected after AFCON was upgraded to a 24-team tournament, beginning with this edition. Some – including Ikpeba, the 1997 African Footballer of the Year – argue that it is precisely this factor that is responsible for the improved fortunes of historically modest nations in this year’s edition.
“The expansion of the AFCON from 16 to 24 teams has given opportunity to so-called minnows to punch above their weight when they face some of the most successful countries on the continent,” he says.
“So many shocking results at the AFCON show that countries in Africa are developing fast and are not afraid of any team.”
Giving weight to this idea is the fact that, in Qatar in 2022, the continent’s elite sides made significant strides on the global stage. For the first time ever, all five of its representatives won at least one match at the World Cup, and not only did two of them advance to the knockout stages, but Morocco became the first African team to reach the semifinals. The Atlas Lions stunned more-fancied, higher-ranked nations such as Belgium, Spain and Portugal along the way, and consequently came into AFCON 2023 as favourites.
But even Morocco have since fallen by the wayside, exiting the competition after a 2-0 drubbing by South Africa who are ranked 66th globally, more than 50 places beneath the North Africans.
This, industry insiders say, is an indication that, rather than the better sides getting weaker, it is a case of the smaller nations rising to the challenge.
“African football is a different territory. Atlas Lions of Morocco can roar loudly at the World Cup but can easily be tamed by a team ranked 60 places below them in Africa,” says Mimi Fawaz, a broadcast journalist and African football specialist.
“There are remarkable changes happening within the continent. Some countries are putting their trust in local managers and also closing the gaps because of improved facilities,” she adds.
Targeted investment in local sporting infrastructure has also been central to their newfound success, much of it anchored upon the FIFA Forward Programme. The programme was conceived in a bid to provide 360-degree, tailor-made support for football development to all of FIFA’s member associations (MAs) and is based on three principles: more investment, more impact and more oversight.
Between 2016 and 2022, funding to the tune of $2.8m was made available to 211 MAs, according to the latest FIFA Forward Report. These disbursements were predicated upon compliance with the programme’s regulations, as well as annual audits by FIFA at the end of each financial year. With more funding, smaller countries have also been able to call on more players from the diaspora.
The Mauritanian football association (FFRIM) is one shining example of the success of the initiative, with facilities in the capital, Nouakchott, where $11.1m in FIFA Forward funds have been used to radically revamp and develop football infrastructure.
The FFRIM building is one of several projects funded, as is the Sheikha Boidiya stadium. Originally built in the 1960s, the 5,000-capacity venue has undergone a major facelift, with a new synthetic playing surface being laid and off-the-pitch facilities such as dressing rooms, also being renovated.
The effect on the national team’s performance has been apparent: Mauritania have qualified for three consecutive AFCON tournaments on the trot, and not only scored their first AFCON goal from open play in this edition but recorded their first win and reached the knockout rounds for the first time, eliminating Algeria in the process.
The Lions of Chinguetti may not have made the last eight, but Cape Verde did, and have done so playing some of the best football in the tournament. Their success stems from similar roots, however.
Back in July 2022, a FIFA delegation completed a four-day visit to Cape Verde, during which it unveiled facilities such as new artificial pitches and the refurbished academy and headquarters of the Cape Verdean Football Association (FCF), all funded by the same programme.
“Countries like Mauritania and Cape Verde book spots in the knockout stage of AFCON, but some of their growth and successes are intentional and come from their federations’ ability to use funds from FIFA forward to develop facilities, pitches and improve the local games,” Gelson Fernandes, FIFA director of member associations-Africa, tells Al Jazeera.
At the next World Cup being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the continent will have a minimum of nine slots for the first time. The qualification series for the mundial kicked off in October, and the likes of Rwanda and Comoros sit atop their respective qualifying groups after two matches.
If their performances – like those of the underdogs at AFCON 2023 – are anything to go by, a continental awakening may be under way, led by a change of the old guard. Football officials, like the fans, seem enthused by the prospect of the entertaining football that the increased competition will bring.
“Successes on the pitch and growth off it can only impact African teams and the 2026 World Cup will give African countries the opportunity to show what they are capable of,” Fernandes predicts.

NFF Yet To Pay Me My $25,000 2021 AFCON Bonus - Super Eagles Goalkeeper, John Noble
Tumblr media
John Noble, the Super Eagles goalkeeper, has talked about the bonuses he is being owed. He says he will resist the temptation of dragging the Nigeria Football Federation to the world’s football governing body, FIFA, over his unpaid $25,000 2021 AFCON bonus, The PUNCH reports. The unpaid bonus of the Enyimba goalkeeper became a subject of interest last year after it was reported that he was the only member of the AFCON 2021 squad yet to be paid. Noble has opened up over the row, as the NFF is yet to fulfil their promises. “It’s been over a year now and I’m tired of asking, I just pray they will pay it.” a crestfallen Noble told The PUNCH. “It’s possible that I report to FIFA, but this is my country and I don’t want to do anything that will tarnish the image of the country. Even all this while, I never wanted to say anything, I’ve just been begging but it seems the more I beg the longer it takes,” he lamented. The NFF through its Director of Media and Communications, Ademola Olajire, last year also confirmed Noble would soon be paid, adding that banking procedures that delayed the payment had been resolved. He also dismissed reports that the federation had banned the goalie from the national team after he resorted to the media to drive home his claims. Noble however said the NFF has only kept promising, while he got wind that the federation has paid some other players and officials of the national teams lately. “Recently, the sister of my roommate who was part of the last U-17 team that was at the World Cup in India told his brother that NFF had paid their money, that was how it hit me again that my payment is still pending. I felt so bad again. “They gave me all the assurances last year in November, I called again in December and they said it won’t exceed January, I called again in January and it was the same thing. Knowing that I have that kind of money somewhere and that others have been paid is really affecting me,” Noble said. Noble was part of the Super Eagles squad to the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon where Nigeria crashed out in the knockout stage against Tunisia. Read the full article

Brazil's "oldest" Alvez can open his forehead tomorrow
Dani Alvez's name in Brazil's World Cup in Qatar was a big surprise. Many did not think that Tite could keep him in the World Cup squad. Think - or how! One of the most experienced footballers in Brazil, but he was out of the team for a long time. But after last September, this rightback was called up to Brazil's World Cup team without playing any competitive match. Brazil coach Tite came to Qatar World Cup with 39-year-old Alvez. Alvez was already desperate to play the World Cup. So much so that the one-time Barcelona star even joined the 'Barca-B' team just to prepare for the World Cup. Improved fitness a lot. That is what satisfied Tite and the Brazil management. Brazil have already played two games from Group G in the World Cup.
FIFA WORLD CUP 2022
After beating Serbia 2-0 and Switzerland 1-0, Brazil has already advanced to the last sixteen. Brazil will face Cameroon in the last match of the group on Friday night (Bangladesh time). As the last sixteen has already been confirmed, Tite can keep the regular players of the eleven in this match. And Alvez's forehead can be opened. Alvez can set the record of being Brazil's oldest player in the World Cup against Cameroon. Dalma Santos, who played for Brazil in the 1966 World Cup at the age of 37, still holds this record. What a coincidence! The late 2013 and double World Cup winner Dalmao always played in the rightback position. Dalma Santos is the brother of Nilton Santos, the legendary leftback known as 'Encyclopedia' in Brazilian football. Dani Alvez Brazil team in practice Brazil team in practice Photo: AFP Read more The Polish goalkeeper won't pay even if he loses a bet with Messi on penalties Poland's goalkeeper Szejny stopped Messi's penalty After playing two matches in the World Cup in Qatar, Brazil has had problems with injuries. Neymar and Danilo were injured in the first match against Serbia. It is highly likely that Neymar will not be on the field against Cameroon. The match is just a regulation fight for Brazil, and Neymar will want to be fully healthy in the knockout phase. That's why Neymar may be rested before the match against Cameroon even if he recovers. Their Milita also played in place of Danilo against the Swiss. Tate may make several changes to the Brazil team against Cameroon to keep key players injury-free at a crucial time in the World Cup. Just like France did last night against Tunisia, the Brazil coach can drop the second tier team as well. Alvez joined the Mexican league club UNM in July this year after completing his second term at Barca. This footballer, who has won the Champions League three times for Barcelona, has not played a match since September 23. Alvez left Mexico after the season for UNM. From there he moved to Barcelona. Joined the "B" team of the Catalan club. Keeping himself fit by training with this B team ahead of the Qatar World Cup. It is understood that Alvez was desperate to play the World Cup even at this age. Hard work earned its reward. Read the full article
