Pronounced "Mu" from mud, "ssoo" from soot and "rie" from retract.

I swear to god, it must seem like I'm a travel fanatic but I'm really not...it's just that the stars aligned this way. Watch me go into radio silence after this because I'll be at home until the next family trip.

With that out of the way- Mussoorie! Queen of Hills, in the lap of nature. Land of Ruskin Bond.

After a 2 hour flight, we landed at the Dehradun Airport. From there, we hailed a cab and it was another hour and a half until we finally reached Mussoorie.

Coming from the sweltering heat, it felt like stepping into an AC room. Except, it wasn't just a room...it was the air itself.

We didn't do much the first day. We just explored a few shops at Mall Road, which was quite close from where we were staying.

We visited the Cambridge Book Depot. It was both an amazing and a slightly precarious sight with all the endless stacks of books. It was a wonder how the staff was still able to bring out any book you wanted.

Next we went into a shop retailing Korean goods and I bought a handful of Pocky because I can't get them where I live.

One thing I absolutely love about visiting hill stations is the state of the dogs there. They are so fluffy! And huge too!

Then we had dinner and returned to our hotel. That is all for today, more scenic views to come!

FACTS ON MUSSOORIE:

Mussoorie is a hill station located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It was established in 1825 by Captain Young and Mr Shore during British Rule in India.

The town is situated at an average elevation of about 2,005 meters (6,578 ft) above sea level and is known for its beautiful views of the Himalayan range, with the highest point being “Lal Tibba” at a height of about 2,275 m (7,464 ft).

The name Mussoorie is often attributed to a derivation of ‘Mansoor’, a shrub that is indigenous to the area.

Mussoorie usually receives a few spells of snowfall in winter and has a subtropical highland climate for the mid-altitude Himalayas. The town has a fairly warm and very wet summer season, with heavy rainfall from mid-June due to the extremely moist monsoonal air. The pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons are generally dry and clear, but cooler.

Mussoorie has several tourist attractions, including the Kempty Waterfall, Gun Hill, Company Garden, and Lal Tibba.

Mussoorie is beautiful throughout the year, but the most pleasant weather is from April to June. Day 0:

Your trip to Mussoorie starts with a journey from Delhi to Dehradun. You can reach Dehradun early in the morning by taking a late-night train/bus or an early morning flight from Delhi. From Dehradun, you can take a bus or hire a cab to reach Mussoorie, which will take around two hours. Alternatively, you can also drive from Delhi directly to Mussoorie.

Day 1:

Upon reaching Mussoorie, check in at the Ananta Prana Glamping resort hotel in Mussoorie, or book your stay beforehand. Once you’re settled, start your day by visiting Kempty Falls, which is around 12 km away from the hotel. You can hire a vehicle for transportation, such as a cab or a scooter, for the entire day. The waterfall is an incredibly beautiful sight, and there are plenty of nearby eateries where you can have lunch.

After lunch, head to Mall Road, which is a relatively crowded area in Mussoorie. You can find plenty of shops and restaurants there, and it’s an excellent place to go shopping and try local food. Post-lunch, you can visit Laal Tibba, which is one of the highest points in Mussoorie. There is an entry fee of INR 50. Laal Tibba offers breathtaking views of various peaks of the Himalayas. The panoramic sights of the beautiful sky and surrounding views will make you want to stay here for as long as possible. You can also try one of the cafes or visit Char Dukan in Landour and enjoy the evening there.

Return to your hotel at the night and have a delicious dinner with a bonfire under the stars. Try the Pahadi cuisine at Ananta Prana Cafe, which offers an exceptional taste that you won’t find elsewhere. The food in Mussoorie is exceptional, and there is something about the mountain air and water that makes everything taste amazing.

Day 2:

Now that you’re settled into the Pahadi life, start your day by waking up early to catch a breathtaking sunrise on the porch of your tent. You can spot exotic birds in the reserved forest or get a glimpse of the barking deer if you’re lucky. After having morning tea and breakfast, we recommend that you take the Ananta Prana Pine trail in the morning which is a 3 hr., moderate trek into the forest and beautiful peaks amidst the natural fauna ad trees. Pick up wonderful pine cones, and wild berries, relax in the forest, take memorable photos, visit a villager’s house eat snacks or pick seasonal fruits and then headlock to Anant prana. After that Relax in your comfortable tents and have lunch at Ananta Prana, or head to Mall Road for some more delicious food.

In the evening, head to Dalai Hill to witness an enchanting sunset. It’s a beautiful place to sit and relax, and you’ll love the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. You can also visit Mall Road to try one of the delicious Tibetan cuisines or anything else that catches your eye. Pick up some souvenirs and head back to the comfort of your glamping tents at Ananta Prana after watching a beautiful sunset at Dalai Hill.

Day 3:

On the final day of your trip, you can either leave for home or extend your journey with additional activities. Mussoorie has many exciting things to do, such as trekking, camping, or exploring nearby villages. If you have more time, you can also visit me nearby places such as Dhanaulti, Kanatal, or Chakrata. 1.      MALL ROAD

Mall Road is the main shopping centre in Mussoorie, most of the famous stores are located here. You can get woollen clothes, antiques and shawls for yourself and your loved ones. Bargaining is common here, so if you got good negotiation skills then you can get the best deals done with your things. You can buy anything from this market like electronic items, daily essentials etc.

2.      CAMBRIDGE BOOK DEPOT

The Cambridge Book Depot exists for a long time. It is a popular bookstore of Mussoorie, this place has the largest collection of novels, including those by Ruskin Bond, travel guides, periodicals and magazines. At this store, you can meet Ruskin Bond on Saturdays in the afternoon.

3.      THE TIBETAN MARKET

In this market you will find many shops and stalls run by local Tibetans, you can buy for a variety of winter clothes, shawls, Tibetan woodwork and prayer wheels. Footwear and Woven Carpets are the specialty of this market. Local Tibetans of Mussoorie are only allowed to run their shops and stalls in that market as outsiders are not allowed to run their stalls and shops in this market.

4.      KULRI BAZAR

It is another popular shopping market in Mussoorie which is always crowded till 10 pm. It is located at the south end of the Mall Road, there are many shops selling clothing items and a few restaurants which provides mouth-watering food. There are also few vendors selling handicrafts at reasonable prices.

5.      GHANDHI CHOWK

Ghandhi Chowk is also known as “Library Chowk”, this place is mostly popular for its street-side shops. In this market, you can find people selling local products, artefacts, Chinese vases and lot more things. There is a small shop that sells Tibetan mementoes that you can give gift to your loved ones.

6.      LANDOUR BAZAR

It is an old market, you must visit here to feel and get an insight into Mussoorie’s past.  In this market, there are few shops that sell everyday essentials and antiques. You can also find few shops that sell shoes in this market. This market is especially popular for their Roman sandals.

7.      SISTERS BAZAR

This bazaar is also an old Bazar of Mussoorie; the two most popular stores in this market are Prakash Stores and the Landour Bakehouse. You will also find few stalls selling antiques and woollen clothes in this market.

I always like to attach a little story about how I procured a particular book. And the story behind the collection of this trilogy is one I hold close to heart. The year was 2014, when my sister went away to Kolkata to work. The first time she came home on leave, she brought back gifts for everyone. I had asked her to get me a book from College Street. And she brought me Sea of Poppies. At the time I had just finished reading some book on China, so to continue reading about India and China's relationship over opium, seemed like a natural transition. The following year, I went to Mussoorie with the family. Hoping to meet Ruskin Bond, I visited to the Cambridge Book Depot and my parents bought me the River of Smoke. Late in 2015, my sister was well settled in her job and the city. When she came home for the Puja holidays, she brought me Flood of Fire as a birthday gift. Thus completing the collection. From a battered, second hand copy of the first book, to the elegant, hardbound finale of the series, I feel that the series progressed not just in plot, but also in my esteem.
