The Parallels Between Agents of SHIELD's Uprising Arc and RWBY's Fall of Beacon Arc
Honestly, as a fan of both, it surprised me how much they have in common. Now, for those of you who've only seen one or the other, here's some background. Warning, lots of spoilers.
The Uprising arc for Agents of SHIELD (AoS), as promotional material liked to name it, was episodes 1x16 - 1x22 (season finale). The events of those episodes ran alongside the plot of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Nazi organization HYDRA was found to be inside of spy organization SHIELD since SHIELD's inception. This arc of the show was written with the movie in mind.
RWBY's Fall of Beacon arc was episodes 3x07 - 3x12 (volume finale). This arc was planned from the inception of the show and the first two and a half volumes spent building up to it. It culminated in the annihilation of the Beacon Academy (the main set location up to this point in the show), the destruction of worldwide communications, and a lot of other things.
I was rewatching the Fall of Beacon arc all over again the other day and it hammed home just how much these shows had in common. They both have:
An arc in the back half of the season/volume that completely change the trajectory of the show HYDRA reveal and the dissolution of SHIELD (Uprising) Maidens/Salem reveal and the Destruction of Beacon (Fall of Beacon)
This arc takes place between one episode titled End of the Beginning (AoS 1x16, RWBY V3 finale) and another titled Beginning of the End (AoS S1 Finale, RWBY 3x07)
A popular main character gets badly injured Fitz gains a traumatic brain injury Yang loses an arm
This character is then separated from their future love interest, and believes they were abandoned by them Fitz by Simmons Yang by Blake
Crazy obsessed boys working with the bad guys who can't let go of the girl and become worse with their obsession later on in the show Grant Ward (with Skye) Adam Taurus (with Blake)
First semi official appearance of a "missing" family member of one of the main characters in the finale. They officially appear in the following season/volume having a temporary alliance with the series antagonists. AoS ending scene has Skye's dad, Cal, cameo (just his hand is shown) RWBY has Yang's mom, Raven, cameo (in bird form) outside Yang's window
One of the main character's are "special" Skye is one of several characters who were given alien blood to heal from the brink of death and the only one who didn't have a negative reaction to it. Her origins at this point are unknown to everyone, including herself. Ruby's Silver Eyes are revealed to be able to neutralize monsters known as Grimm with a flash of light from her eyes
Both of these character's "Special" traits are passed down from their mothers and put a target on their heads Skye is later revealed to be an Inhuman and gets superpowers. The inhuman genes were passed down from her mother, Jiaying. At various points in the show, inhumans are locked up/killed due to their powers, dissected in the name of experimentation, or used by others like weapons. Ruby's silver eyes are a rare trait passed down by her mother, Summer Rose. These silver eyes make her a target of Grimm Queen Salem, who has historically hunted down and killed Silver Eyed Warriors (SEWs). In recent years, she has also done experiments on SEWs to transform them into Grimm.
Betrayal Grant Ward tricked the rest of his team. He was HYDRA all along RWBY and Co had thought Cinder and her team were just transfer students when they had been placed there to bring the school down
Good Guys figure out what's going on too late Skye only realizes Grant Ward is HYDRA after discovering Agent Eric Koenig's body and recognizing Ward was the only one who could have killed him (the two of them are the only ones remaining in the Base). Ruby starts piecing things together when realizing Emerald is still in town (not leaving with her injured teammate as Ruby's team was told earlier) and seeing Mercury (Emerald's teammate who should have had a leg injury) unharmed. Sadly, she is unable to stop their plan from going into motion and Penny Polendina is killed.
Season baddie who dies and then returns in some form during the latest/last season John Garrett, whose past self showed up in S7 Roman Torchwick, who appeared via Neo's illusions in V9
Big guy in charge assumed to be Killed In Action, later revealed to be alive Nick Fury Professor Ozpin (Ozma)
I know some of this information was revealed in later Seasons/Volumes, but it was at least starting to be set up during the arcs I mentioned.
There's probably more similarities I haven't thought of, but man was there a lot just off the top of my head.
No wonder I love both shows lol

Omigoodness hello!! I just found out you have a tumblr and I was so happy to see some AoS stuff posted here! I definitely didn’t binge through all of them when I still have an assignment due in 52 minutes… haha… not at all…
Something did pique my interest tho!! You mentioned Cal having an ‘angry conversation with Phil and May over how they handled Skye/Daisy’s situation’? I’m super curious what you meant by that! So could I please ask for maybe just a few more crumbs? 🥹🥹
Hope you have a great day! x
Hi Anon! Always lovely to hear from one of y’all. I’m glad to hear that you liked my stuff!
• when Skye/Daisy runs away from SHIELD after Lincoln’s death (yes, I was still gonna kill him), she constantly seeks refuge in Cal’s vet place, to the point where he becomes a trusted confidant. Eventually, he remeets Coulson and May, and has a sort of angry conversation for how they handled Skye/Daisy’s situation.
So! I actually really like the post-TAHITI protocol Cal and post-s3 Daisy dynamic that I made for them. Here’s a few things to start so y’all have all the context you need:
- Cal’s post-op name is Dr. John Winslow (DVM)
- Daisy first showed up after getting in a fight with the Watchdogs, she’s badly beaten up, she doesn’t know where to go, and the first place she thinks of is the clinic.
- She ends up passed out in the alleyway behind the building, and Dr. Winslow finds her and helps her clean up and patches her wounds.
- Daisy doesn’t confide in him at first because she’s afraid that too much info will override the procedure, but over time, she lets go.
- Dr. Winslow feeds her, cleans and patches her up as needed, and is generally very understanding. He’s basically Cal if nothing bad ever happened to him, and Daisy wonders if this is what it would’ve been like to grow up as his daughter.
- For a short period of time, she even lives with him in his apartment above the clinic. Dr. Winslow says it’s to keep her out of trouble, but it was actually because Daisy was slowly slipping into a depressive episode, and he wanted to keep an eye on her.
- Daisy learns to cook from him. Coulson tried to teach her, but it never stays. Dr. Winslow teaches her very simple things, starting with how to make rice and a simple broth to tide her over until her next meal (> this makes Coulson a teensy bit jealous. Just a teeny bit.)
- She reveals her powers to him after a few hours of knowing him. There’s no way of explaining her injuries without it, and something in her just trusts him. She was afraid of how he might react, but Dr. Winslow just nodded and offered her a drink.
- Daisy talks about her parents (Coulson and May) a lot, once even venting to Dr. Winslow about them when she was delirious from a fever. This is when he gets a bad impression of them, but he still respects that if she loves them as parents, he’ll be nice to them.
Basically, Daisy healing from her biological daddy issues. Because yes. Girl needs that. The ficlet will come later, probably. We’ll see.

JAMBOREE THREE -- TAKING PICTURES IN THE BATHROOM SINCE BEFORE YOU WERE BORN.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on Bret, Heather, & Calvin of American indie rock band BEAT HAPPENING, during the band's "Jamboree" era, c. late 1980s/1988. 📸: Anne Culbertson.
"Contrary to the regimented roles in bands of the time, the trio swapped instruments with one another and used primitive techniques to capture their songs. The outcome was shaky, lo-fi recordings with off-key vocals and occasional chatter or tape hiss. They distributed their early recordings via cassette, not only to ensure that the music could be heard easily and affordably but also to confront the mainstream industry. Some have perceived their minimalist approach to making music as a calculated act of defiance to the more aggressive, macho punk that was kicking off at the time by the likes of BLACK FLAG and MINOR THREAT. It was about resourcefulness. "I think it was just doing the best we could with the tools we had," says Lewis."

If I had a cap for every time that Kyle McLachlan, in a big budget tv show for a major franchise, plays a overtly caring father that turns out to have become a mass murderer who still believes himself to have been doing the right thing to protect his family, and also kills his wife who he loves very much;
to a fan favourite female protagonist that has traumatic family secrets with major impact on the story, a very very very old parent, and a hodgepodge group of allies to take him down with, I would have 2 caps but it’s weird that it happened twice…

331: V/A // International Pop Underground Convention
Tumblr media
International Pop Underground Convention Various Artists 1992, K Records
My entrée to basically every art scene I’ve ever been involved in was basically just going to whatever extremely DIY festival that scene threw in my city and hoping. You see what seems like an unfathomable number of artists good and terrible (and very occasionally great), hit most of the venues, bars, and spaces worth knowing about, and sometimes even strike up some conversations with people who eventually become your friends. 1991’s International Pop Underground Convention in Olympia, organized by Candice Pedersen and Calvin Johnson of K Records, was the indie model for these fests as I’ve known them, and so it’s as directly responsible for a lot of the good stuff in my life as any musical event I can think of. Everything I’ve heard about it sounds like absolute paradise—the platonic ideal of all the times I’ve picked through mountains of sick screenprinted t-shirts by bands I’ve never heard of, eaten some weird and great food by a tattooed baker, and then ridden my bike on shrooms to catch bits of four shows on the same night, all on a dime.
youtube
The lineup on this double-live compilation is all over the place musically, but it does a beautiful job of summarizing the thing indie/alternative music of the era shared despite its sonic diversity: a sense that the music you liked and what it represented could be a space of legitimate opposition to corporatism; that there was something worthwhile in wearing that belief on your sleeveless t-shirt; that the notion of “selling out” had some real conceptual worth; that we’re in this thing together. So, the International Pop Underground Convention LP serves up first-wave riot grrl (Mecca Normal, Bratmobile); DC post-hardcore (Nation of Ulysses, Fugazi); twee indie pop (Beat Happening; Spinanes); noise rock (Melvins; Unwound); grunge-y stuff, primitive singer-songwriter folk, surf rock, plunderphonic DJ sets, and more and more besides, all recorded live and kinda badly but “real.” As individual performances, few are essential, but collectively they are a powerful document of the alternative scene as it existed in the moment right before Nevermind changed everything.
I always think about how crazy it must be for someone like Nikki McClure, an Olympia visual artist who designed a bunch of early K Records sleeves and released a handful of EPs on the label, to have a performance preserved on the same disc as all these icons. On the one hand, it's not like she sits around in awe of like Beat Happening in the same way a fan would—they were friends and part of the same community, and probably still are to this day. But on the other hand, I’m sure when she comes across a copy of this LP there’s sometimes a dazed moment when it seems like that young Nikki singing her funny little a cappella song must be someone else entirely, the record itself an object manifested from a dream. But the International Pop Underground Conventional was real, and in its way, it carries on to this day.
