Hurst Cross horror story ahead of premier cup final
Non-league previews
IF the stories coming out of Hurst Cross are to be believed, HYDE UNITED can't fail to win the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup final on Monday night and lift the trophy for the first time since 2006.
Opponents ASHTON UNITED — who last won the cup 30 years ago when they were North West Counties League champions — claim they are as badly riven with injuries and illness as they were last weekend when they lost to the Tigers for the second time this season in the league.
Manager Mike Clegg said this morning: "We still have eight players unavailable and as it stands we're going to struggle to find 11 to face Scarborough. It's a shocking end to the season for us as we were flying a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, we may have a few back for the final."
Ben Hardcastle and Sam Sheridan, both of whom missed the 3-0 Hyde defeat, were back in the side for Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Atherton Collieries.
The Tigers, on the other hand, are at full strength and go into the weekend on the back of three consecutive victories and without conceding a goal in the last four.
Nick Spooner says his biggest problem is also one of selection, but in his case it's which players to choose from a squad that's at full strength except for Liam Tongue.
"We're looking forward to both matches this weekend. Decisions will have to be made about selection with the two games being so close. We want to keep up the good run in the league but we've definitely got an eye on Monday night," the the Tigers boss admitted.
Tomorrow (Saturday) in the Pitching In NPL premier division both clubs are at home. Ashton play Scarborough while Bamber Bridge are at the Project Solar UK Stadium.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC travel to the North East hoping to take advantage of the nerves that are clearly showing in South Shields' challenge for the NPL title.
The Mariners have won only two of their last seven matches and all the pressure will be on them as Celtic look to bounce back from a bitterly disappointing performance in the home loss to Radcliffe.
Simon Haworth has a full squad to choose from but could well ring the changes after admitting he felt let down by his team last Saturday. Justin Johnson and Callum Harris may return to the starting line-up as the manager looks to restore the spark that lifted Bridge to safety.
Which CURZON ASHTON will turn up at the Tameside Stadium to face Boston United in National League North? It's a question many fans will be asking.
In recent weeks the Nash have lost to Gloucester, Farsley and Telford, who are all towards the foot of the table. Yet on Tuesday they held leaders Brackley to a goalless draw.
Alex Curran returns to the team but Adam Thomas is injured and Connor Dimaio is unavailable. Connor Teale's loan from Fleetwood Town has been further extended until the end of the season.
In the NPL first division west, striker Eric Watson is set to make his debut for GLOSSOP NORTH END who are home to City of Liverpool.
However, Lee Wilshaw has a calf injury, Jordan Scott has covid, and Jamie Rainford has to undergo a pre-match fitness test on a damaged calf.
Alex Maloney has been recalled from Barnoldswick Town.
Manager Dave Fish is demanding a much improved performance from his MOSSLEY team after last week's 1-0 defeat at City of Liverpool in a game he described as making a compelling case for bottomless brunches and shopping on Saturday afternoons.
Reflecting on the visit to fourth-placed Leek, the Lilywhites boss said: "I'm expecting a tough day. We're going to have to be a lot better than last weekend."
Levi Phillips and Bailey Marsden are available after missing the match at the vanEupen Arena and Louis Potts is in the squad after rejoining training.
On the debit side, Devon Matthews is suspended after last Saturday's red card. Steve Mason has returned from Avro but is unavailable.
Southport have recalled Dec Evans on account of his injury, which means he ends his Seel Park career on 149 appearances.
Freddie Sass, Dale Latham, David Kuba-Kuba and Will Hartshorne have all been ruled out until next season.

The Hawks have yet to lodge their injury report this week so these are estimates only, but the hope is that Paul Puopolo will play this week after missing two weeks with a groin strain. The extent of Grant Birchall’s knee injury has yet to be confirmed; if it is minor he will play in the near future, but as was the case with Ben Stratton, he may be rested for the remainder of the season if it doesn’t settle down soon. Watts and Tyson will face tests on the track this week in a bid to prove their fitness for the game against Adelaide. Captain Jones is running but the Demons will be cautious with his return given the nature of his injury and the fact it is on his preferred kicking leg. – Ben Guthrie

Key members Waite, Wood and Williams could return against Port Adelaide on Saturday. Waite’s recovery is astounding, given he was considered as much as a month away only last week. Preuss will also face a fitness test as he bids to earn an AFL recall, while Jacobs underwent minor surgery on Monday. Hansen, Wright, Larkey and Watson sat out Werribee’s VFL match last week, but all could be back this weekend. That is particularly good news for Wright, who has had several setbacks in 2017. – Marc McGowan

Weller was dropped for the Tigers clash and rested from the VFL to give his troublesome right ankle some respite. He’s trained and should come back through Sandringham on Saturday. Rowney returns for Curzon derby clash
Weekend Non-league Football Previews
THE so-called 330 derby rolls into Ashton-under-Lyne tomorrow (Saturday) when Stockport County visit CURZON ASHTON for a Christmas National League North clash.
Chris Rowney returns to the squad having completed his one-match ban in midweek when the Nash won 1-0 at North Ferriby. However, fellow midfielder Luke Clark picked up a slight hip injury in the same match and is only 50/50 to face County.
Tyrell Biggs, who has been suffering with a thigh injury for more than a month, has suffered a setback and is now not expected to make his comeback until mid-January. Another long-term struggler, Paul Marshall, has resumed training and should be available at the start of the new year.
In the Evo-stik NPL premier division, STALYBRIDGE CELTIC play their first home game in six weeks when they face Rushall Olympic at Bower Fold. During that time they have fallen to second-bottom of the table so a victory is of major importance.
The Bridge could field as many as three debutants, with loanees Chris Gallagher and Sam Sheridan featuring in a new-look midfield and Jake Turner replacing Joe Slinn in goal.
ASHTON UNITED have striker problems as they prepare to set off for Grantham. Matty Chadwick and Jack Dyche are injured but manager Jody Banim insists the club will manage.
Lanre Olapede and Jack Pritchard are both back in contention, and Josh Granite is running again and should be available for selection in the next fortnight.
In the first division north, new signing Aaron Fleming goes straight into the DROYLSDEN squad for the match at Radcliffe Borough. A midfielder with an eye for goal, Fleming was previously at Colne.
Otherwise the Bloods are very close to full strength. Jack Rudge is the only player still on the treatment table.
At MOSSLEY, who are home to Kendal Town, co-bosses Peter Band and Lloyd Morrison have been strengthening the squad. They have brought in young central defender Declan Evans from Chorley and are hoping to get midfielder Matty Crothers on a month’s loan from Curzon.
Rio Ahmadi is available to play, which means the suspended James-McLean Oppong is the only absentee.
For GLOSSOP NORTH END, who are away to Clitheroe, there may finally be a glimpse of light at the end of the injury tunnel.
Adam Jones is fit and Callum Chippendale may make it on to the subs’ bench.
Joint-managers Paul Phillips and Steve Halford have also signed a clutch of new faces. Defender Brad Roscoe comes in from Ramsbottom and Gambian attacking midfielder Lamin Baldeh from Mossley. Luke White joins on loan from Bolton Wanderers. Lee Rick has been released.
HYDE UNITED face Scarborough at Ewen Fields in a match that could have a major impact on the play-off places. Both clubs have 36 points from 17 games but the Tigers — who are unbeaten at home in the league — have a much better goal difference.
Striker Karl Jones misses the match with a damaged hamstring and midfielder Jack Stockdill is also injured. Chris Sutherland trained on Thursday and there is a chance he might feature.
The Christmas period could be more crucial than usual for Hyde as it’s understood the success of Darren Kelly’s young squad has started to attract the interest of Football League clubs.

Who’s in the mix for round two?
Crows skipper Taylor Walker is set to return from a hamstring injury to the lead the side to face Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday. Walker was a late scratching for last weekend’s season opener against Greater Western Sydney. Key defender Jake Lever is also set to play his first senior game of the season. Lever missed the JLT Community Series with a hamstring injury, but got a run under his belt in a SANFL trial last weekend, finishing with 19 possessions and seven marks against Woodville-West Torrens. Veteran Scott Thompson had 14 disposals playing in the midfield and across half-back in his return from a shoulder injury. Uncapped midfielder Harrison Wigg continued to press his claims with 28 possessions. – Lee Gaskin
Following a first-up win against Gold Coast, Chris Fagan will be reluctant to make too many changes ahead of Saturday night’s home match against Essendon, but he has one tough decision. Jack Frost is available after serving a one-match suspension, but squeezing him in past one of Harris Andrews, Dan McStay or Darcy Gardiner would be difficult after they performed so well. Perhaps a small defender will make way and McStay can swing forward. Hugh McCluggage (ankle) and Josh Schache (knee) did not play NEAFL at the weekend and will likely need at least one game at the lower level before being considered. – Michael Whiting
Young key forward Harry McKay staked his claim for a senior debut with a four-goal display in the Northern Blues’ practice match against Richmond last Thursday. McKay, pick No. 10 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft, played in two JLT Community Series games after an injury-interrupted 2016 season. Nick Graham (18 disposals and a goal) and Rhys Palmer (15 disposals) performed well in the midfield to put themselves in the frame for selection. – Howard Kotton
Harry McKay has put his hand up for a round two berth. Picture: AFL Photos
Livewire forward Jamie Elliott has been ruled out for another week, with the Magpies deciding not to gamble on his lack of match conditioning for the clash with Richmond at the MCG on Thursday night. A one-match suspension to Travis Varcoe will force the Magpies to make at least one change to the team that last week challenged the reigning premiers, the Western Bulldogs, and the most likely replacement would appear to be either James Aish, who was a late withdrawal last week with illness, or fellow midfielder Tim Broomhead, who was an emergency. Other candidates who performed strongly in a VFL practice match against Footscray include ex-Demon defender Lynden Dunn, fellow backman Matthew Scharenberg, father-son draftee Josh Daicos and exciting forward Kayle Kirby (three goals). – Ben Collins
It is hard to see the Bombers making too many changes to their round one side, which was too strong and too quick for Hawthorn at the MCG. There is much stronger depth at Essendon this season than in recent years, so if a Bomber or two are struggling to get up after their big hit-out then there should be some ready-to-go replacements. Ben Howlett and Heath Hocking missed selection last week but could come in against the Brisbane Lions, while James Stewart, Jackson Merrett and Josh Begley won’t be too far away from selection. Tom Bellchambers is continuing his comeback from pre-season knee surgery, but might need more match practice before being available for the top level. – Callum Twomey
Tom Bellchambers would be a surprise pick for the Dons this week. Picture: AFL Photos
Ross Lyon didn’t want to talk selection in the aftermath of Freo’s loss to Geelong, however Matt Taberner could be an option to try to boost the Dockers’ firepower after bagging five goals from 20 possessions for Peel against East Fremantle. Lyon conceded performances at WAFL level needed to be viewed in the context of a thumping 86-point win, but Harley Balic (33 disposals, one goal) continued his good form to keep his hand up for a debut. Smooth-moving Ethan Hughes offered plenty of rebound from half-back – an area the Dockers struggled in with their stagnant ball movement against Geelong – from his 14 kicks. Hayden Crozier kicked two goals for Peel but was quieter than in the Thunder’s opening round win over East Perth, while Tommy Sheridan could come into consideration after being held over as the Dockers’ emergency on Sunday evening. – Travis King
A thumb injury is the latest hurdle for Nakia Cockatoo, with the young midfielder set to miss up to a month after surgery this week. Cam Guthrie will be tested this week after failing to overcome calf soreness for Sunday’s clash with Fremantle, while Zac Smith is a chance to play after soreness forced his late withdrawal from the round one team. Darcy Lang impressed in the VFL and will be in contention, along with Sam Menegola. Aaron Black and Jed Bews kicked two goals apiece in the VFL and have also pressed their cases. – Jennifer Phelan
It’s an interesting week at the selection table for Rodney Eade after the Suns were beaten by the Brisbane Lions. David Swallow was a late withdrawal with an ankle injury, but is expected to be available to play Greater Western Sydney on Saturday afternoon. He’ll likely replace Pearce Hanley, who is on indefinite leave, attending to a family matter in Ireland. Will Brodie and Brayden Fiorini may also come into the reckoning after strong pre-seasons and excellent performances in a NEAFL practise match at the weekend. – Michael Whiting
A hamstring injury for Tendai Mzungu could see young midfielder Jacob Hopper play his first senior game of the year. Hopper has had an interrupted pre-season after undergoing heart surgery late last year, and the Giants have taken it slow with the 20-year-old who has also had some lower back issues. Defender Nathan Wilson was a surprising omission from the Giants’ round one side that lost to Adelaide, and should be a big chance to face Gold Coast, with his speed and foot skills from the backline sorely missed last week. Harrison Himmelberg is another defender who will be looked at, while forwards Sam Reid and Daniel Lloyd, who were added to the senior list last week, and draftees Will Setterfield and Harry Perryman, might also be an outside chance. – Adam Curley
Luke Hodge will be back this week. With his one-match club suspension now served he will make a timely and welcome return to a side that missed his leadership and composure against Essendon last week. One thing the Hawks appear to have in their favour is almost a full list to choose from, with the mercurial Cyril Rioli expected to overcome a corked thigh that hampered him through much of the loss to the Bombers. Team selection will be interesting. Do the Hawks recall key defender Kaiden Brand to help deal with the tall and potent Adelaide forward line? What about Brendan Whitecross for some extra toe in the midfield? And surely the likes of Teia Miles and Kade Stewart will soon be rewarded for their strong summers and the exciting Ryan Burton earns a recall. – Ashley Browne
Melbourne may be forced to make two changes to the team that had a commanding 30-point victory over St Kilda in round one. As reported by AFL.com.au, young defender Joel Smith is set to be sidelined for up to four months after having shoulder surgery on Tuesday, meaning there is a spot open in defence. Important defender Bernie Vince is also out, after he accepted a one-match ban from the Match Review Panel for striking Nathan Wright. Midfielder Dom Tyson missed out on being selected in round one after a lack of pre-season conditioning due to a knee issue, but he gave the match committee something to think about with 24 disposals, 16 inside-50s and two goals in a VFL practice match against Port Melbourne. Creative half-forward Dean Kent (20 disposals) also impressed, while versatile defenders Josh Wagner, Sam Frost and Tom Bugg are others likely to come into the selection mix. The Demons insist spearhead Jesse Hogan (rolled ankle) and Max Gawn (back) will be fit to take on the Blues at the MCG on Sunday. – Ben Guthrie
The Roos’ priority this week will be settling on a replacement for injured spearhead Jarrad Waite. Majak Daw is the frontrunner, but second-year key forward Ben McKay could be considered after playing North’s first two JLT games, while first-year tall Nick Larkey kicked three goals for Werribee in a VFL practice match on Sunday. Roos coach Brad Scott suggested changes would be made for round two even before Waite’s injury was diagnosed. Senior midfielder Ben Cunnington will return from a one-match suspension, while others in contention for a call-up include forwards Taylor Garner, Jed Anderson and Corey Wagner, who returned from a shoulder injury in a VFL practice match last Saturday, second-year midfielder Ryan Clarke and defenders Ed Vickers-Willis and Sam Durdin. Experienced defender Sam Wright did not play in Saturday’s VFL practice match and will probably need more game time before he returns for the Kangaroos. – Nick Bowen
Ben McKay could be handed a debut for the Roos against Geelong. Picture: AFL Photos
The Power will have a welcome selection headache ahead of Sunday’s game with Fremantle at Adelaide Oval. Jarman Impey, Nathan Krakouer and Aidyn Johnson are available after serving one-game suspensions for the Power’s season-opening win over Sydney at the SCG. Experienced duo Angus Monfries and Matt White had a run in the club’s SANFL trial against Sturt last Thursday as they build their match fitness after injury-interrupted pre-seasons. Midfielder Joe Atley travelled with the Power as the team’s emergency last weekend, but it will be hard to make many unforced changes to a winning team. – Lee Gaskin
If there was a weak spot in Richmond’s 43-point win over Carlton it was the backline, conceding 14 goals to an inexperienced Blues’ attack. This is also where the Tigers’ depth is, with Jayden Short (16 games in 2016) available and in good touch in a VFL practice match on Thursday. Oleg Markov and Nathan Drummond are also options as versatile defenders, but Short would be the first player called on as a replacement for Taylor Hunt, who would be the defender most under pressure if a change is made. In attack, Sam Lloyd had an off night and the match committee could consider bringing in Ben Lennon, who was lively and kicked three goals in Thursday’s VFL curtain raiser, if it decides an immediate change is needed against Collingwood. Midfielder Anthony Miles was surprisingly overlooked in round one, but it’s hard to see a midfield vacancy for him to take at the moment. – Nathan Schmook
Ben Lennon impressed in a VFL practice match last week. Picture: AFL Photos
A disappointing loss to Melbourne was compounded by Nick Riewoldt’s right knee injury. The obvious replacement for the former captain is Paddy McCartin. He booted three goals in an excellent display for Sandringham and sat out the last quarter of the practice match against Port Melbourne. McCartin was cleared to play against the Demons but “hamstring awareness” meant coach Alan Richardson didn’t want to risk the former No.1 selection. Leigh Montagna picked up 18 disposals in the backline and midfield for the Zebras before he also sat out the final term. The 33-year-old looked in fine touch and should be fit to make the flight to face West Coast on Saturday, after a right calf strain kept him out of round one. Blake Acres and Jack Sinclair are another two who could add more midfield depth on the large expanses of Domain Stadium. – Dinny Navaratnam
With All Australian defender Dane Rampe (broken arm) sidelined for at least the next month, exciting youngster Aliir Aliir looks to be the obvious replacement. The athletic big man is fully recovered from a pre-season toe injury and has had another full week of training to build more fitness and touch. Draftee Will Hayward and recently upgraded rookie Shaun Edwards are in line to replace the unlucky Daniel Robinson, who broke his left collarbone against Port Adelaide last week, the second time in as many seasons. Defender Nic Newman must also be a chance to debut after backing up his outstanding 2016 season with some solid form over summer, and his inclusion could see NAB AFL Rising Star winner Callum Mills pushed into the midfield. Mature-age ruckman Darcy Cameron (finger) should be fit to play the premiers, with fellow big man Callum Sinclair another pushing for selection, along with Jack Maibaum and rookie Robbie Fox. Small forward Tom Papley (knee) should be taken off the long-term injury list this week but will need some games in the NEAFL before he’s considered. – Adam Curley
Shaun Edwards is in the frame to play for his third AFL club. Picture: AFL Photos
The Eagles’ ruck curse has struck again. Drew Petrie – who missed only one game for North Melbourne in the past five seasons due to suspension – suffered a broken hand in the opening term against his old club and will miss weeks, opening the door for Jonathan Giles to partner Nathan Vardy in the ruck against St Kilda. West Coast still has decisions to make in defence after only taking two talls into the win over North Melbourne and looking vulnerable in the air. Will Schofield didn’t play at the weekend after flying to Melbourne as the travelling emergency, but Tom Barrass (19 disposals, four marks) swept up well in defence in East Perth’s loss to stay in the mix. Dom Sheed (23 disposals, four inside 50s) found plenty of ball for the Royals after being left out of the Eagles’ side and Liam Duggan (24) continues to build his form, although it remains to be seen if either did enough to force their way into the AFL side. Rookie Francis Watson (26) was again one of East Perth’s best and a debut might not be far away for the dashing half-back. – Travis King
Luke Beveridge will have to make at least one change for Friday night’s Grand Final rematch with the Sydney Swans at Etihad Stadium with defender Dale Morris to miss up to eight weeks with a broken leg. Marcus Adams should come into contention as the veteran’s replacement. Midfielders Clay Smith, Lukas Webb, Bailey Dale, Josh Dunkley and Mitch Honeychurch all had plenty of the footy in Footscray’s big VFL practice match win over Collingwood. Ruckman Tom Campbell was also a standout in his first game for a month in his return from a rolled ankle. – Ryan Davidson

In the mix: round one
All the talk this week in South Australia centres around the fitness of Crows stars Rory Sloane and Taylor Walker. Both will have to complete Thursday’s main training session to be considered for Sunday’s round one encounter with Greater Western Sydney at Adelaide Oval. Sloane is recovering from a fractured eye socket, while Walker has a hamstring complaint. Defender Jake Lever will also be touch and go for the season opener with his own hamstring issue. Defenders Andy Otten and Jake Kelly impressed during the JLT Community Series, while Kyle Cheney is returning from a groin injury. Curtly Hampton looks to have done enough to earn himself his first game for the Crows, coincidentally against his former side. Ex-Carlton forward Troy Menzel is also a chance to make his Crows debut. – Lee Gaskin
The Lions will go largely with the team they fielded in 2016 when they travel down the Pacific Highway to take on Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night. Greater Western Sydney recruit Jake Barrett played all three JLT Community Series games and could be upgraded to the senior list to make his Lions debut. The club’s other off-season buy, former Collingwood fullback Jack Frost, is suspended and will have to wait until round two. Highly-fancied draft pick Hugh McCluggage (ankle) is likely another week or two away, while forward Josh Schache (knee) is still a chance to play, but unlikely at this stage. – Michael Whiting
Utility Dylan Buckley (hip) and ruckman/forward Daniel Gorringe (Achilles), injured during the JLT Community Series, are available for selection for Thursday night’s season’s opener. In the Northern Blues’ last practice game against Box Hill, Kristian Jaksch and Liam Jones performed well in attack. Jaksch has kicked seven goals in his past two practice games. Nick Graham (33 disposals) was prolific in the middle. Ruckman Andrew Phillips is making solid progress on the track after suffering a stress reaction in his left foot in January. He is running, but not in full training as yet. Sam Petrevski-Seton, Carlton’s No. 1 selection in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, is back in full training and should be ready for selection soon. The young West Australian strained his quad last month, causing him to miss the pre-season. – Howard Kotton
The Magpies have already ruled out Daniel Wells (calf), Jamie Elliott (ankle), Jordan De Goey (broken hand) and Levi Greenwood (hip), which weakens their running brigade somewhat, but they hope the void will be filled by the likes of promising youngsters Tom Phillips and James Aish. Newcomers Chris Mayne (ex-Fremantle) and Will Hoskin-Elliott (ex-GWS) appear certain selections while fellow recruits in Lynden Dunn (ex-Melbourne) and elevated rookie Henry Schade (ex-Gold Coast) are locked in a battle for a key defensive post. It would surprise if the Pies didn’t continue with their four talls – ruckman Brodie Grundy, forward/ruck Mason Cox and forward duo Darcy Moore and Jesse White. – Ben Collins
The Bombers could feature at least a couple of new faces in their season-opening clash against Hawthorn on Saturday night. Key forward James Stewart, who crossed to the club after four years at Greater Western Sydney, might line up after showing good signs through the pre-season, as may ex-Brisbane Lions forward Josh Green, who kicked four goals in a VFL practice match last week. Important swingman Cale Hooker has been a touch-and-go proposition to play since hurting his hamstring but played his first game last week at VFL level and should face the Hawks, and No.1 pick Andy McGrath is a good chance to debut in round one. – Callum Twomey
Josh Green may debut for the Bombers against Hawthorn. Picture: AFL Photos
The Dockers took a relatively settled squad into their three JLT Community Series matches but small forward Hayden Ballantyne‘s hamstring injury has opened up at least one spot for Sunday’s clash with Geelong. Hayden Crozier, who had 26 disposals and booted a goal for Peel on Saturday night, looks a readymade replacement. Tommy Sheridan picked up 24 touches for the Thunder in a lively display across half-back and on a wing to also keep his name in the selection frame. Draftee ruckman Sean Darcy (13 touches, 22 hit-outs) is behind Jonathon Griffin in the pecking order but did his growing reputation no harm up against Jonathan Giles, while yet-to-debut Harley Balic (30 disposals), Ethan Hughes (23) and tall defender Sam Collins were also very good in Peel’s triumph. Freo should have at least four new faces with recruits Bradley Hill, Cam McCarthy, Joel Hamling and Shane Kersten set to make club debuts against the Cats. – Travis King
Former Carlton defender Zach Tuohy will most likely make his club debut after three impressive pre-season games across half back. Midfielder Mitch Duncan and defender Tom Stewart will be available after scans cleared them of hamstring damage last week, with the latter a chance to make his AFL debut along with fellow 2016 draftee Brandan Parfitt, who also impressed over the summer. Young half-back Zach Guthrie could be in the frame if he’s elevated to the senior list this week. Scott Selwood is very unlikely to play after missing all of the pre-season matches with a persistent toe injury, while Jake Kolodjashnij (groin), James Parsons (foot) and Cory Gregson (foot) are longer-term prospects. – Jennifer Phelan
There will be a lot of new faces in the Suns team that hosts the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night, led by former Lion Pearce Hanley. Hanley is one of four mature recruits expected to debut in the red and yellow, along with ruckman Jarrod Witts (Collingwood) and midfielders Michael Barlow (Fremantle) and Jarryd Lyons (Adelaide). All four have made immediate impacts in their first pre-season and should play a majority of the year. Draftees Ben Ainsworth (number four selection) and Jack Bowes (number 10) are also favoured to debut, while Sean Lemmens could come into calculations for a spot in the back pocket after a strong performance in the NEAFL at the weekend. – Michael Whiting
Former Fremantle midfielder Tendai Mzungu could be a surprise round one call up after being upgraded from the rookie list on Friday. Mzungu’s experience and versatility could be a factor when Leon Cameron selects his side to take on Adelaide, with vice-captain Stephen Coniglio (ankle), Brett Deledio (calf) and another former Docker Matt de Boer (hamstring) all out injured. The Giants’ top draft pick Tim Taranto looks a lock to debut against Adelaide after an outstanding JLT Community Series, with the teenager likely to spend most of his time forward. Jacob Hopper trained well in a solid session on Saturday after playing half a game in the reserves the week before, so he could also feature against the Crows. GWS took a cautious approach to his pre-season campaign after his heart surgery, and his 2016 back issues. Young defender Harry Himmelberg could be selected to give more height to the team with Aidan Corr (hand) already ruled out. – Adam Curley
It will almost certainly be a new-look Hawthorn line-up for the opening game of the season with at least three new players from rival clubs – Tom Mitchell (Sydney), Jaeger O’Meara (Gold Coast) and Tyrone Vickery (Richmond) – set to make their debuts and former Crow Ricky Henderson a sound chance to join them for the Saturday night blockbuster against Essendon at the MCG. Add new skipper Jarryd Roughead and it is a profoundly different side to that which exited last year’s finals in straight sets. The Hawks have almost a full list to choose from, however those on the cusp of selection include Henderson, Kade Stewart, Billy Hartung, Will Langford, Ryan Schoenmakers, Ryan Burton and Brendan Whitecross. Will they try to stretch the Bombers for height, or inject more speed, given how zippy Essendon looked over the summer? It would be disappointing if tough midfielder Stewart was left out after an impressive summer. JLT form will count for plenty at selection given there was no Box Hill practice match last weekend for fringe players to press their claims. – Ashley Browne
Former Swan Tom Mitchell will bring his ballwinning skills to the Hawks. Picture: AFL Photos
Intrigue surrounds Jack Watts’ place in the round one side after coach Simon Goodwin refused to declare he was an automatic selection against the Saints. The Demons also have some decisions to make on Dom Tyson (knee), Jeff Garlett (hamstring) and Dean Kent (back) who have all had limited match practice in the pre-season. Rookie defender Joel Smith is in the selection mix, with Sam Frost and now Colin Garland, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on the weekend, on the sidelines. Given the Saints have Paddy McCartin, Josh Bruce, Tim Membrey, as well as Nick Riewoldt in attack, Smith’s height and versatility could prove to be handy. Back-up ruckman Jake Spencer is also in the frame to support Max Gawn, although the Demons will have to weigh up whether Spencer can impact the game up forward sufficiently to warrant selection. – Ben Guthrie
Key forward Ben Brown has pulled up well from his return match for Werribee last Saturday and will take his place alongside Jarrad Waite in North’s forward line against West Coast. Majak Daw is likely to edge out Braydon Preuss and be named as the Roos’ third tall forward/support ruckman. North’s first pick in last year’s NAB AFL Draft, Jy Simpkin, is set to make his AFL debut, while former Western Bulldogs forward Nathan Hrovat and ex-Collingwood defender Marley Williams are poised to make their club debuts. Third-year defenders Ed Vickers-Willis and Sam Durdin are also in contention to make their long-awaited debuts after impressive pre-season campaigns, but with old hands Sam Wright and Lachlan Hansen returning to the field over the past two weeks the youngsters will probably have to wait a little longer for their first senior games. Declan Mountford also enjoyed a promising JLT Community Series, but the run-with midfielder is another youngster likely to narrowly miss the round one cut. – Nick Bowen
The Power could field three debutants for their round one clash with grand finalist Sydney at the SCG on Saturday. Midfield bull Sam Powell-Pepper and 27-year-old rookie-listed forward Brett Eddy are certainties to face the Swans after impressive form in the JLT Community Series. Defender Dan Houston – who like Eddy was elevated to the senior list last week – has also firmed into contention with his quality ball use and decision making off half-back. Houston has his nose just in front of Riley Bonner, who played one game last season. Defender Matthew Broadbent could come straight into the side despite not playing any games in the pre-season competition because of a hamstring injury. Another potential first-gamer, midfielder Joe Atley – the younger brother of North Melbourne’s Shaun – will also be spoken of highly among the match committee after his performances in the pre-season. Experienced duo Angus Monfries and Matt White probably need another week in the SANFL to build match fitness before they are considered. – Lee Gaskin
The Tigers have confirmed half-forward Dan Butler will make his debut, but there could be more surprises ahead of Thursday night. Rookie Jason Castagna impressed over the JLT Community Series and the rookie’s pace and defensive pressure in attack is highly rated by the coaching group. Fellow rookie Mabior Chol also made a strong case in the final pre-season game, but it is likely tall forward Ben Griffiths will be preferred ahead of him in round one. The club has room to elevate both Castagna and Chol ahead of round one if it chooses. Others who are jockeying for selection are Kamdyn McIntosh and Oleg Markov, who have not been able to establish themselves in the Tigers’ best team over the pre-season but have strong credentials. – Nathan Schmook

A calf strain has seen Leigh Montagna ruled out but there should be at least three first-time Saints on the field against Melbourne on Saturday at Etihad Stadium – Jake Carlisle, Jack Steele and Nathan Brown. The trio played every match through the JLT Community Series and Carlisle and Brown will bolster what had been an undersized defence. Steele was in rehab for a foot and wrist injury after crossing over from the Giants but showed excellent form in the pre-season games. Jimmy Webster and Daniel McKenzie are like-for-like replacements for Montagna while Koby Stevens and Jack Lonie would offer more depth in the midfield and forward line. Don’t expect to see much from the draftees this year. Ben Long might make his debut later in the season but Josh Battle, Ed Phillips and rookie Rowan Marshall need time to develop. – Dinny Navaratnam
Former co-captain Kieren Jack remains a chance to line up against Port despite missing the JLT Community Series with a hip injury. The 29-year-old completed most of the pre-season but will need to train well this week to prove his fitness, given his only game this year was the Swans’ intra-club clash in early February. Draftees Oliver Florent and Darcy Cameron loom as round one debutants after impressing during the pre-season matches, with defender Jack Maibaum and rookie Robbie Fox also smokies to make John Longmire’s final 22 against the Power. Key defender Aliir Aliir looks good to go after overcoming a toe problem, after he completed his second hit out of the year against NEAFL side Sydney University on Saturday. – Adam Curley
The selection squeeze is on with five or six spots up for grabs. Defence is the main area of contention, with Eric Mackenzie, Tom Barrass and Will Schofield fighting for one or two positions to partner All Australian star Jeremy McGovern against North Melbourne’s tall forward line. Mackenzie had the job in the final JLT hit-out, however Barrass (22 disposals, 10 marks, two goals) and Schofield (21 disposals, nine marks) impressed in East Perth’s loss to Peel on Saturday night. Veteran defender Sam Butler (28 disposals) gave plenty of drive to push for round one. Former Geelong big man Nathan Vardy looks set to lead the ruck on club debut, alongside ex-Roos champion Drew Petrie in an emotional return to face his old team. Recognised ruckman Jonathan Giles isn’t out of the equation, though. Ex-Hawks great Sam Mitchell will make his Eagles debut, while Jack Redden (26 disposals for East Perth) has stuck his hand up for a midfield berth after being left out of the final JLT clash. – Travis King
The Bulldogs should start their premiership defence against Collingwood on Friday night with 18 of the 22 that played in last year’s Grand Final, with only second-year midfielder Josh Dunkley set to miss selection on form. Travis Cloke appears certain to play his first game in the red, white and blue, and the former Magpie will need to give Tom Boyd a chop out in the ruck with Jordan Roughead injured and Tom Campbell unlikely to play despite being available after an ankle injury. Impressive draftee Tim English won’t be considered, as the ruckman is battling shin soreness. Tory Dickson also looms as notable absentee after the sharpshooter had a delayed start to the pre-season. Despite strong JLT form, explosive midfielder Lin Jong looks likely to miss out. Key defenders Fletcher Roberts and Marcus Adams have both had indifferent JLT campaigns, with the former likely to get the nod to face the Pies. – Ryan Davidson
