The California Postal Service?
Start with a stack of old, unused California postcards and then make some artist stamps to add along with the official postage. And if President Biden doesn’t fire Louis DeJoy soon, we might actually need our own California Postal Service. If that happens, Huell Howser is going on a stamp!

Hello everybody I’m Huell Howser and here we are on a beautiful June day in East Los Angeles, during what I’m told is called “Pride” month. If you look at the fine gentlemen behind me you’ll notice that they’re all men of a certain size. Well, that’s because we’re here at the East Los Angeles Bear and Daddy Eat Off. This event’s been running for over seven years now and it features all types of men eating as much as they can, as fast as they can, all in front of an audience of “twinks” Join us today as we enjoy the fun, the food, and the fur and see why the East Longeles Bear and Daddy Eat Off is another great example of California’s Gold.

Thank you for tagging me, @thirteensfavoritetoy!!
Favorite color: Sky blue.
Currently reading: Oh boy. I’ve mainly been reading Wikipedia articles about elections, political systems, proportional representation, etc. (See “currently working on” at the bottom.)
Last song: “You Only Get What You Give” by New Radicals.
Last series: Doctor Who. Or technically, the docuseries California’s Gold with Huell Howser.
Last movie: I’d be shocked if it wasn’t Back to the Future. I also saw it at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015, accompanied by a live orchestra. The last movie I actually saw in a theatre was probably Skyfall, when it was new!
Sweet/spicy/savory: Sweet, with savory as a close second. I really can’t stand spicy foods.
Craving: Thousand Island dressing.
Tea or coffee: Tea. I’ve tried coffee at work, and I can’t stand it! I have Earl Gray at work (with lots of sugar, and cold), and a particular brand of green tea at home.
Currently working on: Coming up with plausible election results for recent elections in a universe where California has always been an independent country. (I’m weird.)
Tagging: @clara-is-brave, @universe-on-her-shoulders, @cosmicallyavg, @knickynoo, @bg-sparrow, @inlovewithanathemadevice, @memoriesbecomesongs, @oswaldc, @penny-anna, @doccywhomst, and anyone else who wants to do it!

I used to love watching Huell Howser on PBS when I lived in California.
Today I took an internet quiz that asked what the Yosemite Firefall was. I knew about what is NOW known as a firefall; during the last two weeks of February there is a waterfall in the park that the sun hits at a certain angle, and the water looks like fire.
When the quiz said that I was incorrect, and that it was actual fire falling down, I had to look into it and learn more.
So this was a REALLY interesting episode for me. I got to learn something new, and Huell’s interview style is so endearing (sadly, he passed in 2013).
There are four parts to this video. Above is part one.
Part two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf6-9eN-vPo
Part three: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1G4ZQ550zo
Part four: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxmZEh1O8YA
I’m very happy to report that the episode includes actual film footage of the firefall, and one of the people interviewed is the person who created the firefall (which was eventually called off because SO MANY people were coming to see it that it became a nuisance as they were damaging the park). But this was very cool to watch.

Just when you think you know the history of California, along comes another piece of the story that you’ve never heard before! I’m pretty sure every fourth grader has learned about James Marshall’s 1848 discovery of gold in the American River; but the Holcomb Valley gold rush of 1860 was definitely news to me. In this episode of California’s Gold, Huell spends some time in a beautiful and secluded area of the San Bernardino Mountains, listening to tales of old California from local historian/master storyteller Tom Core.
Huell tours Holcomb Valley, just north of Big Bear, and learns about its gold mining history.

I’ve been a little quiet around here, because I’ve been frolicking across the Southland, a trip that ended on my last night here at the iconic Frolic Room! To paraphrase the great Los Angeles news anchor Jerry Dunphy, my pal and I traveled from the desert to the sea to all of Southern California. Well, not quite all of SoCal but enough to ensure I have plenty of “California’s Gold” to share with you for a while, in the spirit of one of my roadside heroes, Huell Howser. Let me start by shining a light on The Frolic Room, tracing its roots back to Prohibition before becoming Bob’s Frolic Room in 1934. On the same block as the Pantages Theatre and the Capitol Records building, the Frolic Room has seen many of the names immortalized on the stars outside grace its bar. At one point, none other than Howard Hughes owned the bar, along with the Pantages next door, according to the Hollywood Partnership. Writer Charles Bukowski is said to have found liquid inspiration here. The list goes on! With the sad news that the beloved watering hole the Pig ‘n Whistle is no more, it’s comforting to know this old Hollywood dive and living piece of Los Angeles lore is still with us. #retrologist (at Frolic Room) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVeDlKXvpPA/?utm_medium=tumblr
