We rented a car to bum around the Valdes Peninsula near Puerto Madryn. We weren't here at the right time for the whales but it's still an absolute treasure trove of wildlife. Guanacos are going to be the first things you see, and you're going to see a lot of them, but apparently yelling, “NOT A LLAMA!” out of the window is not conducive to getting photos of anything other than their arses as they run away. We headed to Caleta Valdes to see the seals which were just sunbathing, occasionally flicking sand onto their backs. I could definitely get on board with being a seal, just slobbing about all fat and stinking of fish. In fact catch me on any given Sunday and I’m nearly there. Next stop, penguins, and they're right there on the cliffs by the carpark. They gave zero fucks about the starey, cooing apes. They were just hanging out, mostly in their couples, some of them occasionally braying like donkeys. One of them waddled onto the boardwalk to inspect us a bit closer before it realised we weren’t that interesting and waddled back off. We saw more seals, an armadillo, lizards, things that look like emus but aren't emus. Leaving Portugal, I drove along the picturesque southern coast to Spain’s Costa del Sol. This region, aptly named the Sun Coast, boasts miles of sandy beaches and a lively atmosphere. My first stop was Málaga, a city that perfectly blends modernity with history.

Málaga’s beaches, such as Playa de la Malagueta and Playa de la Caleta, were perfect for relaxation. The city itself offered plenty to see and do, from the historic Alcazaba fortress to the Picasso Museum. I also enjoyed the local cuisine, especially the fresh seafood at the beachfront chiringuitos (beach bars).

Relaxing in Costa Blanca

Continuing up the coast, I arrived in Costa Blanca, a region known for its white sandy beaches and clear blue waters. Alicante served as my base, with its beautiful Playa del Postiguet beach right in the city. The lively promenade, Explanada de España, lined with palm trees and mosaic tiles, was a great place for an evening stroll.

A short drive away, I discovered the charming town of Altea, with its picturesque old town and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The beaches here were less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience. Snorkeling in the clear waters around Tabarca Island was another unforgettable adventure.

The Balearic Islands: Mallorca’s Beaches and Nightlife

No beach holiday in Spain would be complete without visiting the Balearic Islands. I chose Mallorca, the largest island, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. Staying in Palma de Mallorca, I explored the island’s top beaches like Cala Millor and Cala d'Or.

Beyond the beaches, Mallorca’s interior offered charming villages and scenic drives. Valldemossa, with its narrow streets and traditional stone houses, was a highlight. The island’s nightlife, especially in Magaluf, was lively and energetic, offering something for everyone.

Ending in the Canary Islands: Tenerife’s Volcanic Beaches

To cap off my beach holiday, I flew to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Tenerife’s unique volcanic beaches, such as Playa de las Teresitas and Playa Jardin, provided a different kind of beach experience. The island’s diverse landscape, from lush forests to arid deserts, was truly captivating.

Exploring Teide National Park and taking the cable car up to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, offered stunning views of the island. The vibrant town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife provided a mix of cultural experiences and nightlife, making it a perfect end to my journey.

2024 Lanzarote Spring Sun

Tuesday 9th April

Today was a busy day.

I had been asked to plan a route yesterday. A route to Mirador del Rio to see the sunset.

First stop: Lanzarote Aquarium. We enjoyed looking at the fish and the sharks and stuff. They had an ocean tank with Grey Sharks and a Zebra shark and another with blacktip reef sharks. It was an interesting place.

Lunch: We crossed the road after leaving the aquarium and went to the Grandfather Bar, which had a €6 burger/fries/drink deal. It was actually pretty good.

Second Stop: We had aimed to go to the pirate museum next. We headed into Teguise, and had to loop around once or twice to get to the entrance. Some dude was putting down a barrier and told us we couldn't go to the castle on the hill. We exited and entered a front yard with a billboard next door, and concluded that the museum went out of business a few years back and was turned into houses. We had to give up on the museum... :(

On our way to the next point of interest we came across the Stratified City. A city of volcanic rock, which has been weathered into all sorts of interesting shapes.

Stop 3: Cactus Gardens.

I'd seen this when looking for things to do and dismissed it due to the high winds. Dad and my little brother had also both dismissed it as probably going to be a little bit shit. It was amazing. The bronze work gates, and railings, the wooden cactus themed door handles, the volcanic stone walls and buildings. Not to mention the number of rad cacti that were there. We only had 40 minutes there, but it was awesome.

Stop 4:

We stopped in Arietta and Punta Mujeres to admire the massive crashing waves, which had already demolished the end of their pier.

Stop 5: Casa Museo de César Manrique

We then headed inland to the home of the island's favourite artist, César Manrique. He had some abstract paintings that weren't so well received amongst our number, but his home (a slightly eccentric renovation on an old Palm Orchard Farm House) was really cool. He had a massive conservatory window in his bathroom, but had then walled the outside to prevent onlookers. He also designed Mirador del Rio.

Stop 6: Caleta Del Mojon

Deciding that we had slightly too much time to kill to just go to the viewpoint, we ended up stopping on the side of the road near the coast. The black volcanic rock and the white sand were gorgeous contrasts. The waves were also breaking over the craggy coast reaching 40 feet high. My little brother, dad and I all went out closer to the waves, getting buffeted by the winds, the sea spray, little bits of sand, and the hot sun. It was awesome though.

Stop 7: Mirador Del Rio

We drove back inland towards the viewpoint. But it was (ridiculously) closed. Barrier down and all. We couldn't enter. We couldn't park (there's a one way loop). We couldn't hang around 90 minutes until sunset and my little sister needed to go to the bathroom.

Stop 8: Bar Folelé

We drove back south again to a bar. We had drinks. We tried some pumpkin pie, Grandma Pie and Goats cheese with fig. We then hurried back into the car

Stop 9: Mirador de Guiante

We busted ass getting to the Guiante viewpoint and got to witness the sunset from a fantastic vantage point. And we were relatively sheltered from the wind.

We then headed home in the dark. Ate pizza and then scurried off to bed.

A LA DECOUVERTE DE EL HIERRO

Cette île est à la fois la dernière née et la plus petite de l'archipel des Canaries. Par endroits, son relief rappelle celui de Big Island à HAWAI. Il faut savoir que ses habitants ont pu assister, en 2011, à la naissance d'un volcan sous-marin proche de la pointe sud de l'île...

Le vendredi 30 juin, nous sommes allé faire des courses au supermarché de VILLA DE VALVERDE, où nous avons rencontré un personnage atypique connaissant M. & P., Portugais d'origine, ancien de la Légion Etrangère, qui dit posséder 4,2% de la superficie de l'île, et qui proposait une méthode expéditive pour ramener le calme en m��tropole...Nous sommes rentrés déjeuner à bord avant de partir nous baigner au village de EL TAMADUSTE

La marée était basse mais les fortes vagues étaient bloquée par une barre de rochers, et on a pu nager un peu. Avant de rentrer au bateau, nous sommes allés visiter les piscines d'eau de mer de CALETA

à proximité desquelles se trouvaient de belles demeures

Le lendemain, samedi 1er juillet, nous sommes partis en direction de la pointe sud de l'île, vers le bourg de LA RESTINGA. Pour y arriver, nous avons traversé une magnifique pinède et visité un musée consacré à l'aspect volcanique de l'archipel en général, et de l'île en particulier. On a pu voir ces schémas

Elle expliquait la naissance du volcan sous-marin TAGORO en 2011. La ville de LA RESTINGA, située à 4 km du spot fut évacuée. Il y avait aussi cet autre schéma

Aux alentours du musée, se trouvaient de petits tunnels de lave

Nous avons ensuite mangé dans un bon petit restau local

avant de visiter les installations portuaires que M. & P. connaissent bien car ils y avaient sorti leur TAOMAPA pour le mettre à sec et le caréner

Nous sommes ensuite allés nous baigner dans un autre endroit sur la côte sud avant de rentrer à PUERTO DE LA ESTACA où se trouve le TAOMAPA...
