Recently, it seems as if centralized platforms have been in turmoil. Besides, Twitter is becoming full-on “Truth Social” or 4chan/8chan and a cesspool of hate, including rampant racism and queerphobia. Now, there is turmoil at Reddit, where third-party applications are at risk of shutting down with people threatening to leave. With interest rates rising, causing … The post With Centralized Social Platforms in Turmoil, Another Reason to Leave Twitter and Join Mastodon at Sakurajima appeared first on Chikorita157's Anime Blog . Is this how they’re gonna be migrating themselves to the Fediverse?
StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.
Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.
First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit.
What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time you hit your Following feed, or For You, or search results, a blog’s posts, a list of tagged posts, or even check out blog recommendations, you’re using this framework under the hood. If you want to dive into the code, check it out here on GitHub!
StreamBuilder has a lot going on. The primary architecture centers around “streams” of content: whether posts from a blog, a list of blogs you’re following, posts using a specific tag, or posts relating to a search. These are separate kinds of streams, which can be mixed together, filtered based on certain criteria, ranked for relevancy or engagement likelihood, and more.
On your Tumblr dashboard today you can see how there are posts from blogs you follow, mixed with posts from tags you follow, mixed with blog recommendations. Each of those is a separate stream, with its own logic, but sharing this same framework. We inject those recommendations at certain intervals, filter posts based on who you’re blocking, and rank the posts for relevancy if you have “Best stuff first” enabled. Those are all examples of the functionality StreamBuilder affords for us.
So, what’s included in the box?
The full framework library of code that we use today, on Tumblr, to power almost every feed of content you see on the platform.
A YAML syntax for composing streams of content, and how to filter, inject, and rank them.
Abstractions for programmatically composing, filtering, ranking, injecting, and debugging streams.
Abstractions for composing streams together—such as with carousels, for streams-within-streams.
An abstraction for cursor-based pagination for complex stream templates.
Unit tests covering the public interface for the library and most of the underlying code.
What’s still to come
Documentation. We have a lot to migrate from our own internal tools and put in here!
More example stream templates and example implementations of different common streams.
If you have questions, please check out the code and file an issue there.

So...A state-sponsored botfarm will have the financial backing to pay for accounts for a majority of their accounts.
And...are you still looking for alternatives? The fediverse has several OldeTwitter-like software platforms, each with multiple servers. I personally have tried only three, but I have been active on each of them for several months:
Misskey (looks Twitter-like, but has different features/UI/abilities)
Calckey/Firefish (often has a 3K character limit; but the server admin can choose that limit)
Mastodon (the software that's gotten the most press. Closest feel as ye olde Twitter, but no quote-tweeting and 500 character limit by default)
My personal favorite is Calckey/Firefish. Higher character limits on most servers, and I like the UI and functionality better than Mastodon. Fair warning, though: Firefish doesn't let you edit posts - you can delete the former instance of the post, autocopy all the text into a new post-field, edit that text, and then post that new thing. This is still helpful for those instances where you post something, almost instantly find a typo or remember something additional, and are okay with deleting the former post and only posting the fixed version.
For those of you who sometimes forget to add alt text to your images, there's a bot-account you can follow who will ping you whenever you post an image and don't add alt text.

So in light of the post about Tumblr staff being cut down to a skeleton crew - whether it's real or not - I really suggest anything other than twitter or instagram. Twitter is run by a fascist and Instagram is run by FB. Threads is also run by FB.
I recommend two things. Firstly, Wordpress accounts can be followed by folks on the Fediverse, so if you want to post long posts like you can here on Tumblr, you can do that on Wordpress and have folks on the fediverse find your posts.
Want to follow my Wordpress blog? Follow me here! I reblog a lot of my longer feminism posts.
However, to follow people on the fediverse back, and do microblogging, you're going to need something else. I suggest Misskey/Calckey/Firefish/Iceshrimp:
Tumblr media
It has a tumblr-like feel and medium-length posts for blogging. I'm [email protected].

If you recall, I pleaded to explain why people should finally leave Twitter earlier this month. WordPress and several apps dropped support for it. Mastodon might look hard to use as the Fediverse looks like the Future of social networking. Didn’t you know that there is another option that looks more like Twitter but was … The post Creating Sakurajima Social, Another Way to Bring Anime Bloggers/Fans from Twitter to the Fediverse appeared first on Chikorita157's Anime Blog . Another addition, since Tumblr is hinting that it wants to go down the road to shit like all the other platforms:
Once you're signed up on a server, you can use a client like elk.zone to access Mastodon, giving you a much more modern UI experience that resembles Twitter.
There are also a number of apps you can use on your phone that likewise provide a better experience than the official Mastodon app. I use Tusky (Android); I think Ivory seems to be the most popular iOS option.
If you want something more like Tumblr than Twitter, can I offer you Calckey
It allows longer posts as well as the quote retweet/reblog with commentary function. And best of all, because it's also in the fediverse, you can follow Mastodon accounts on Calckey and vice versa.
Twitter is rapidly sinking as people are only allowed to look at it for about ten minutes a day, so I thought I would put together a post explaining the best way to get started on Mastodon! It can be an intimidating prospect as it's not as immediately user-friendly as Twitter or other corporate social media sites.
Selecting a server
The main difference between Mastodon and Twitter is that you don't just "sign up for Mastodon". Mastodon is effectively made up of hundreds of small sites (called "instances") that are all interconnected ("federated") and use the same interface. The instance you choose has only a minor effect on your experience. The main one to be aware of is that if an instance is known to be poorly moderated and have users who cause a lot of trouble, other instances may unlink from it ("defederate") and make it more difficult for people on it to interact with you. This is rare. The very big, unthemed instances like mastodon.social are more likely to have this problem than any fannish one, in my experience. (You can also make a personal choice to block an entire instance if you have an issue with it.)
The other effect is that each instance has its own universal feed of all users on it.
Tumblr media
The sidebar looks almost exactly like Twitter's, except for "local" and "federated". Your home feed is just the people you follow. "Local" is everyone on your instance, and "federated" is everyone on any instance yours is federated with. The local feed is why it's worthwhile to choose an instance that has some sort of theme you're interested in, like fandom, tech, queer issues, history, etc.
The two main fannish instances I'm aware of are fandom.ink and federatedfandom.net. There's also wandering.shop but that seems to be more for writers, in my experience. If you want a different sort of instance, just google "[topic] mastodon instance" and you should find it.
Applying to your instance
Because instances are more tightly moderated than the rest of social media, you can't always immediately get into the one you want. (Though I suspect that many have opened up slightly as Twitter flails.) You may need to submit some kind of application and wait a few days.
If you know someone on the instance you want to join, they may be able to get you an invite code so you can skip the queue. I have unlimited invites for fandom.ink, hit me up if you want to join.
You can also join an instance that's currently taking new accounts and then transfer into the one you want later. For the impatient souls.
Posting
The mechanics of posting are just like Twitter's.
Tumblr media
You type in the box, you hit "toot" (I know), and out it goes. You may notice that you get a 500 character limit! This is nice.
If you add an image, make sure to add alt text. Not including alt text may get you flamed or shamed. You can also make a poll, set privacy levels, and add a content/spoiler/trigger warning that will require people to click through to see the text.
Use of hashtags is strongly encouraged on Mastodon. I've seen some talk praising Tumblr's style of having a separate field for tags and suggesting Mastodon add that, but I don't know if it'll happen. But unlike Twitter, there's an earnest culture of incorporating tags into your text (eg "I just bought a new #fountainpen") and following tags to get posts about different topics. This is the main way to find people with similar interests to follow, outside of your local feed.
It's also Mastodon culture to write an introductory post with your interests, including hashtags, so that people can find you.
Something else to be aware of is that you can edit your posts! If anyone has already rt'd ("boosted") them - they will just get a notification of your edit.
You cannot qrt on Mastodon at this time. It's a hotly debated topic. You will have to settle for boosting and then replying, or making your own post with context and linking to the post you want to qrt.
Following other people
If the person you want to follow is on your instance, that's all well and good. Click on their name, go to their profile, click the "follow" button.
Tumblr media
If they are not on your instance, you need to make sure that you're accessing them through your instance. Clicking on their name from your federated feed, or if someone has boosted them onto your home feed, will automatically take you to the version of their profile on your instance. Also all well and good.
If you get to their profile from somewhere else, such as a direct link from another social media platform, that's a problem. If you try to follow, their instance will bleat at you that you don't have an account. There are two ways to get around this.
One is to paste their entire username (eg "@[email protected]") into the search bar on your instance, from your home feed. The other is to navigate to "http://[your server address]/[their whole username]" in your address bar. Both will take you to the same place.

Honestly, the Fediverse feels, to me, like the perfect place for the Sims Community to go to.
Mastodon is well developed and there are tons of fun servers to sign up for. It provides a Twitter-like experience for those who like the whole micro-blogging thing. 500 characters per toot! Four pictures! Polls! Content Warnings/Read More links! Chronological timelines! NO ADS or data scraping! :O
Maybe someday folks will make a bunch of Sims-focused servers for people to be on? I'd sign up for one! (I'm aware there used to be a Mastodon instance called Simstodon, but it collapsed years ago due to a tidal wave of sims pornography and I think some in-fighting, so maybe we could do better a second time around? Multiple small communities > than one large one, anyway!)
Pixelfed is perfect for simmers who like Instagram-style picture-focused posting and image galleries.
Peertube is great for simtubers, and OwnCast for folks who stream.
Want to do something larger-scale? There's Friendica, Hubzilla, or Calckey. There's Lemmy and Kbin for those who like Reddit-style apps. There are also ActivityPub plugins for WordPress, so you can send your WordPress posts automatically to your Fediverse followers! And at least with Mastodon, every account defaults with built-in RSS feeds, so you can follow folks that way if you prefer, too!
And the awesome thing about the Fediverse is no matter where you land, whether it's a Mastodon instance, or an Akkoma instance, or a Friendica account, or even a Bookwyrm (Goodreads) account, etc. etc., you can still follow anyone on any other app. Is there a simstuber you want to follow, but you're on Mastodon and they're on Peertube? No problem, you can follow each other! You like Pixelfed better than Akkoma? Folks can still follow you there, and you can follow them!
No more closed gardens, no more having to smush yourself into boxes to try and fit into a social media that demands your money, data, content, and mental health.
Anyway… I'll stop ranting. But maybe I'll start posting more Sims stuff on Fedi. I'll use the hashtag "#SimmerFed" if I do, hopefully more people will join me!
I'm here if you want to follow me, btw: https://comicscamp.club/@Rheall/
