Reiki Precepts: Show Compassion
Show Compassion to Yourself & Others.
This is probably one of the more challenging precepts. It is very easy to show compassion to others, but for many it is more difficult to show compassion to yourself. What does that truly mean?
Compassion isn’t just loving, or even unconditional love for that matter. Showing compassion to yourself also means receiving. Allowing yourself to receive on all levels: spiritually, emotionally, physically, and monetarily.
What comes up for you when you sit with the idea that it ok to receive? Are you willing to give yourself permission? What is holding you back?
For many there are societal reasons, for others familial, or perhaps you came from trauma.
What would it take to move past all of that? To stand in your power, in your own compassion, and to be the space that allows for comfortable gifting and receiving?
What if I told you that there is just as much joy in receiving than in giving? That the giver actually find JOY in gifting.
How do you achieve all of this? Well, you work the Reiki precepts.
DO NOT BEAR ANGER
DO NOT WORRY
BE HUMBLE
BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
SHOW COMPASSION
The more time that you spend working with the Reiki precepts, and integrating them into your life, the more you will understand that you already are the embodiment of compassion. It has just been gunked up over the years. You may start to recognize that being compassionate does not always mean allowing others to walk all over you. It can also mean having boundaries, and to stand up for what you believe is being true to you.
To learn more about the Reiki precepts and how to integrate them into your life I invite you to join us for Shoden Japanese Reiki Level 1, Okuden Reiki Level 2, and Shinpiden Reiki Level 3 classes taught at our Chicago location.
Enjoy a private Reiki session at either our Chicago or Arlington Heights locations. Can’t make it in? That’s ok! Reiki sessions are also available as distance healings.

Acupuncture and TCM for the treatment of Insomnia & Depression
Acupuncture and TCM for the treatment of Insomnia & Depression
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have a long history of treating depression and insomnia.
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders. It can have many complicated influencing factors, such as loss of interest and sleep disorders including insomnia. Approximately 70% of patients with depression have symptoms of insomnia. In fact, insomnia is one of the diagnostic criteria for depression. One of the manifestations of severe depression is waking up two hours, or more, earlier than normal.
Insomnia is commonly defined as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Traditional Chinese Medicine will frequently look at what time you are waking up, and associate it to a specific organ system. Depending on what organ system is affected will determine what acupuncture points will be used to address the insomnia. An acupuncturist will address the whole body, and will work towards creating a balanced system. Patients that commonly come in for insomnia or depression frequently see changes in other symptoms too.
Generally, the first line of defense for depression are antidepressant medications called: selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAS), and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MOIs). However, these medications can come with a number of undesirable side effects such as weight gain, sedation, dry mouth, nausea, blurred vision, constipation, and tachycardia.
In a meta-analysis done in 2017 over 18 studies. 11 articles were randomized-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) compared with Western medicine, 5 were RCTs of acupuncture combined with medication compared with sole medication; 2 were studies of acupuncture compared with sham or placebo acupuncture control. There were 1678 participants (908 women, 641 men, and 120 unknown gender, age 18-75yrs old). The results of the meta-analysis were promising, and showed that acupuncture could be a successful alternative therapy to medication for treating depression related insomnia.
Unlike Western medication, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are relatively low risk. By looking at the whole-body acupuncture can not only address insomnia and depression, but also a wide variety of other symptoms.
Why lose any more sleep? Find your nearest licensed acupuncturist, and make your acupuncture treatment for insomnia and depression today!
At Calandra Center for Health and Wellness, located in Chicago and Arlington Heights, we offer a wide variety of options for the treatment of insomnia and depression including acupuncture, herbs, Reiki, Access Consciousness Bars, and other energy medicine.

Absorbing Negative Ions Can Provide Positive Health Benefits
Absorbing Negative Ions Can Provide Positive Health Benefits
Negative ions can provide surprisingly positive effects on the body and mind. They have been proven to enhance mood, improve the appetite, quell allergic reactions, stop headaches and provide essential relief for a number of other ailments.
One feel good place you get plenty of negative ions is at the beach. The negative ionization of waves near the beach, and other forms of moving water are known to cleanse both body and soul due to some unique scientific properties.
Let’s take a look at the science behind the positive absorption of negative ions.
It all has to do with the immune system. Negative ions stimulate the immune system and spur the defense cells to bolster and increase our resistance to disease. In addition to bolstering our disease defense system, negative ions increase the amplitude of our brain waves, which contributes to an overall higher awareness level throughout our body.
What if you’re not by the beach, or it is the middle of winter? Negative ion counts may be highest by moving water, but they exist in many different areas on earth, especially those with high quality fresh air. Visiting and spending time next to waterfalls and waves is the best way to absorb the rejuvenating powers of negative ions. In a place with fresh air there is generally between 2,000 to 4,000 negative ions per each individual cubic centimeter. In a place with moving water there can be over 100,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter.
Cities can be detrimental on your negative ion count. For example, due to most cities experiencing an ample amount of pollution, negative ion counts can be as low as 100 negative ions per cubic centimeters in urban areas. So what is the solution to overcome this? Get outside of course! Make sure to create some time to leave the city, decompress and reap the positive benefits of absorbing negative ions.
Calandra Center for Health and Wellness is located in Chicago’s South Loop, very close to Lake Michigan. Taking a walk along the lake or through one of our many parks is one way to increase your exposure to negative ions. Just outside the city you can also visit places like The Botanic Gardens or The Morton Arboretum.
There are also some neat tricks to getting your dose of negative ions when you can’t make it outside. Get a negative ion generator, put a fountain or moving water source in your home or even just taking a shower can increase the negative ion count around you.
It is important to absorb negative ions regardless of how you get them. Their healing and rejuvenating properties are beneficial for everybody.
Four Ways to Get Negative Ion Benefits
Negative ions produce many benefits for our everyday health. From helping cure allergies to decreasing the amount of airborne viruses, the benefits are vast and diverse. You may be wondering how to get more negative ions in your life. Well, don’t worry, it isn’t that hard. Check out these four ways you can receive the benefits of negative ions in your life today.
Go to the Ocean, Lake, or a Nature Preserve
Negative ions are the most abundant in wild places, especially by the sea. Wherever there is moving water expect negative ions aplenty. So go to the beach and soak up some negative ions in addition to soaking up the sun.
USB Stick Ionizers
Technology never ceases to amaze. If getting out into nature is too hard for you because of your daily commute and job, don’t worry, there is a simple a solution. USB stick ionizers plug right into your computer and you can reap the benefits of negative ions even while at your office.
Ionic Light Bulbs
Another miracle thanks to the tech industry is ionic lightbulbs. Ionic light bulbs can be used in a variety of different locations: the home, the office, the garage, your workshop, really anywhere with a light source is a good place to put on ionic light bulb. These light bulbs will produce negative ions whenever they are turned on and have you feeling revitalized in no time.
Himalayan Salt Lamps
Salt lamps cleanse the air naturally while adding beauty to your home or office. The salts have a very high mineral content. When the lamp is heated with the lightbulb, it causes the salt to emit negative ions. The positive ions from pollutants and negative ions from the salt bond and the air gets neutralized. At Calandra Center for Health and Wellness, we have salt lamps in all our treatment rooms as well as have both pink, and the rarer white, salt lamps for sale.

Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and NAET Allergy Elimination for Allergies
According to the CDC allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. with an annual cost of over $18 billion. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. There is no doubt that allergies are on the rise affecting men, women, and children.
Regardless of whether you suffer from seasonal allergies, allergies to dust, food, chemicals, or environmental there are several natural alternatives for the treatment of allergies.
Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Acupuncture and TCM have a long history of helping with the symptoms of seasonal allergies. It has been shown to help with sinus congestion, watery eyes, asthma, sneezing, and headaches.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involves stimulating the body’s life force (Qi) by placing small, thin needles directly under the skin (acupuncture). When a person’s Qi grows stagnant or experiences other problems, he or she is more susceptible to disease and illness. Therefore, correcting this problem through acupuncture will naturally deter allergies, asthma and other common problems. Your acupuncturist may also recommend dietary and lifestyle changes, and herbal medicine to speed your recovery.
Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET)
NAET was developed over 30 years ago by Dr. Devi Nambudripad M.D., D.C., L.Ac, Ph.D. It is rapidly being recognized as an effective way to treat allergies of all types. By utilizing a series of kinesiology, energy balancing, and acupuncture NAET has been shown to help a wide range of pathologies. Including: ADD/ADHD, Autism, anaphylaxis, autoimmune diseases, food allergies, seasonal allergies, pain, digestive dysfunction, chemical sensitivities, EMF sensitivities. NAET is unique in that it reboots the body so that it no longer recognizes the sensitivity. This is quantifiable through IgE and IgG allergy bloodwork.
In a 2011 study, Biomedical Analyses of a Holistic Peanut Allergy Treatment: NAET , participants with peanut allergies had their blood tested (prior to and after treatment) for specific IgE and IgG levels as well as for the inflammation marker tryptase. After the entire treatment protocol was completed each participant was given an oral peanut challenge and was monitored closely. No significant reaction was observed; only minor complaints of temporary oral tingling, pain, anxiety, and nervousness. Blood pressure was also monitored during the oral challenge, and remained constant for every participant.

Which meditation is right for me?
Which meditation is right for me?
There are many different types of meditation to choose from. So, if one doesn’t seem to be working for you then find another! This is not a one size fits all practice.
Types of meditation include Buddhist practices, transcendental, zen, mantra, chakra, sound, Reiki meditation, guided and active. There is a lot of information out there. To start jut think about what type of person you are, the amount of time and dedication you have, and where your interests lie. What do you intend to get out of meditation?
Many people find one that they love and stick with it. However, you may find that after practicing one for a long period of time that you may need to switch, and then maybe go back to it later. That is ok. Don’t judge yourself. Just remember that even though the practice of meditation has numerous benefits, it isn’t always easy. Some styles are better for different times in your life. The point is that you continue to work through the hard times because that is when you need it the most.
Here are some benefits from practicing:
Relaxation
Healing the body
Handle stress better
Feel less anxious
Increased energy
Improved focus
Deeper spiritual connection to oneself
Increased amount of positive feelings
Approach life in a calm and aware manner
Over time and practice meditation helps to quite the mind and bring your consciousness to the present moment, efficiently helping you to “let go”. Meditation helps you connect with your “true self”, and by doing so bring awareness to your connection to others and the whole of creation. It helps to calm the “monkey mind” and improves your focus, and as a result is calming and helps increase creativity. It is believed that almost any activity can be meditative if it absorbs your attention and keeps you present. Have you ever found yourself calm and aware while doing the dishes?
Some meditations to consider:
Qigong, tai chi, yoga – These exercises cultivate “life energy” and promote the circulation of energy (Qi) through the focus on breathing and movement. In particular these exercises circulate oxygen and blood. If you are interested in one of these, seek out a qualified instructor.
Activity mindfulness – Walking or doing other enjoyable activities such as sports, art, music or writing promote activity mindfulness. Doing dishes, gardening or cleaning can also be considered a meditation if we are focused and present while enjoying the experience.
Guided meditation – This type of meditation is where one sits and focuses on specific imagery given by an instructor or through audio. This form of meditation is often used in healing, as one can focus on specific parts of the body.
Sound – The focus of this meditation is on a sound, repeated mantra or vibration. For centuries people have known and understood the healing properties of sound.
Mantra – Mantra meditation is repeating a mantra such as “Om” or “Om mani padme hum.” transcendental meditation, a very popular and well-known practice includes a mantra and is usually practiced about 20 minutes twice a day. It might be a good idea to seek out an instructor for transcendental meditation, as it has specific techniques that might require a higher level of assistance.
Sitting – Sitting meditation is very common and can incorporate focus on sound, a mantra or breathing. Practices tend to originate from Buddhism, and established positions, such as the lotus, have been taught to encourage deeper inner connection.
Binaural Beats – This is a modern addition to the meditation circle. Binaural beats are special frequencies that put the brain into meditative states such as alpha or theta. The frequencies, which synchronize brain waves, have benefits such as increased awareness. Binaural beats tend to quickly enhance mood. They can be found easily using an Internet search.
Reiki – Many schools of Reiki, taught in the United States, teach that you are nothing but a conduit. That you are harnessing universal energy “Ki” (same concept as Qi) to utilize a healing response. However, Sensei Usui originally taught it as a meditation that you practiced in order to become the energy. Making it not that much different from the concept of Qigong and Tai chi.
The Japanese style of Reiki is taught in three classes, but is utilized and practiced in everyday life as a set of meditations and chants (mantras and sound vibrations) that are meant to help you on the path of finding true self. Healing of others takes place from your presence, and not from being a conduit.
If you are ready for meditation, start slowly with one that looks enjoyable. Remember to not judge yourself. You will be learning new tools. You may find that you just do not enjoy one style. That is ok! Keep working on it until you find a meditation style that works best for you.
Calandra Center for Health and Wellness offers many different types of classes on meditation and mindfulness.
We are conveniently located in Chicago’s South Loop and Arlington Heights Illinois. Offering acupuncture, Reiki, energy medicine, and NAET Allergy Elimination to the greater Chicago area.

Shoot for the Stars!
Shoot for the Stars!
Franklin D. Roosevelt said during his first inaugural speech “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” What a powerful message!
How many times have you found yourself sitting out, or wondering what if you just had the courage?
What are you afraid of? Are you worried that you will be embarrassed or fail? To that I say, so what!
Take a page from a child’s book. Look at how they are so willing to live their lives in ten second increments, to do and be who they choose when they choose to be it. Observe, their willingness to explore, to not judge, to just be. How does it get better than that?
Challenge yourself. Live your life in 10 second increments try something new, and then don’t judge yourself.
Fear is the thing that holds us back, but is it real? Or, is it the realization of how much we actually lack control. Fear can distract us from that which is most important. It can create worry and self doubt. Does that fear belong to you, or to someone else? Sit with that thought for a bit. How much do you fear in life that was implanted on you by a friend or family member? My guess is probably a lot. Fear can also lead to anger and potentially hatred. We say it is natural to fear that which we do not understand. Who came up with that point of view? Did you know that the same hormone is released for both fear and excitement? Chemically there is no difference between the two. It is just your emotional perception of the situation. Fear is to blame for many things throughout history like the Holocaust, Salem witch trials, Spanish Inquisition, Crusades, KKK…. The list is a long one.
If you choose to shoot for the stars, to not judge, it opens up all kinds of infinite possibilities. My suggestion for you is to take it 10 seconds at a time and only focus on the present. Have an idea in your mind as to where you see yourself and goals you would like to achieve, but be willing to accept other opportunities that may come up. Be open to change. Don’t allow yourself to be so focused that you pigeon hole yourself, and remember to let go of limiting beliefs.
Not sure how to achieve these things? We invite you to join us for a session in Reiki or Access Consciousness Bars, or maybe even learn these therapies for yourself. Both are wonderful energy healing therapies. By taking a class in either of them you will learn tools and techniques to help you “shoot for the stars” and find true self.

Acupuncture for Migraine Prevention
Acupuncture for Migraine Prevention
There are many different types of migraines and just as many types of treatments ranging from over the counter medication, prescription pain relievers, or even Botox. Migraines affect approximately 18% of women and 5% of men in the United States. They can be debilitating and effect quality of life.
Unfortunately, many of the common treatment options were not designed with the intention of preventing the migraine attacks. This is where acupuncture can be an invaluable treatment option.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are thousands of years old. It systematically looks at the body as a whole. An acupuncturist considers every symptom, and categorizing them into patterns. By utilizing thin needles, about the width of a cat whisker, and inserting them into the skin at specific acupuncture points an acupuncturist can increase blood flow, influence nerves, and calm the mind. Thus, balance the body and treat the root cause as opposed to just the symptom.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, migraines can be caused by a number of different types of patterns. Including: stagnation (where there is a blockage of the smooth flow of energy), deficiency (where the body is deficient in Qi, blood, or yin), excess (where excess yang energy rises to the head). Migraines can be caused by one or more of these patterns. It is up to your highly trained acupuncturist to determine what your best course of treatment should be.
Meta-analysis of Migraine Studies
A meta-analysis, published in 2009, looked at 22 trials with 4419 subjects addressing the effectiveness of acupuncture for migraine prevention. Six trials showed that after 3-4 months, acupuncture was superior to basic acute care. Fourteen trials compared “true” to “sham” acupuncture. The pooled analysis failed to demonstrate a statistically significant superiority of true acupuncture, but both groups showed fewer headaches than before treatment. Four trials compared acupuncture to proven migraine preventive medication. The group using the prophylactic drugs were shown to have more adverse effects then the acupuncture group.
For those that are looking for a natural, long lasting, cost-effective alternative to long term use of medications or neurotoxins (Botox) consider trying acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of migraines.
Calandra Center for Health & Wellness is located in Chicago’s South Loop and Arlington Heights Illinois. We offer a wide variety of treatment options for migraines including acupuncture, reiki, and Bengston Energy Healing Method.
Call or email us today for your complementary 15 minute phone consultation.

Type of Reiki Taught & Practiced at CCHW
Calandra Center for Health and Wellness understands that some people may resonate more with the Usui -Hayashi -Takata lineage that allows you to access the Reiki energy through an attunement, and requires little in the way of self-development. Although, we have a great respect for this lineage we believe that there are many highly qualified teachers out there.
That is why Calandra Center for Health and Wellness offers the Traditional Japanese style of Reiki that focuses on self-development, and offers a fuller understanding of the system of Reiki itself. Should you decide to study all of the different levels you will walk away with a better understanding of “true-self”, the Reiki precepts, and how to do hands on and distance healing. The longer you practice the more you will start to recognize that Reiki does not end when the treatment does, but rather it can be seen through your entire life. These tools and meditations are so much more than just being able to heal people. They help you on the journey of finding “true-self” and help you in every aspect of your life.
For those that are already certified these classes will help you to have a fuller understanding of the precepts, the symbols, the meditations, and the attunements.
It is very important to us that the teachers that train at CCHW have a complete understanding of Reiki, its history, the energy, ethics of energy work, and continue to work on their own personal practice. This is something that is not common to all teacher certification programs.
CCHW offers continuing education classes for acupuncturists and massage therapists. However, these classes have been developed to be beneficial for anyone, and you can progress at your own pace.
Requirements for Teacher Certification
Shoden Reiki I
Okuden Reiki II
Shinpiden Reiki III (It is encouraged that you wait at least a year before taking the Shinpiden class in order to deepen your own practice.)

Attunements in Japanese Reiki
What are attunements in the Japanese style of Reiki?
First let’s have a better understanding of the five elements to any Reiki class/journey.
Developing Spiritual and Mental Focus
Spiritual and mental focus is the most important part of your journey. By working with the Five Precepts of Reiki, you start to embody them. They start to become part of your every day life. The precepts are tools to help build mental focus and spiritual development which leads to finding “true-self”.
Techniques and Meditation
During each of your Reiki classes you will learn meditation techniques to help you develop a stronger mental focus. Each class builds on these techniques and tools, and helps you to develop a daily practice.
Hands on Healing
In Reiki Level 1 (Shoden) you will learn techniques of hands on healing of self and others. At the Shoden level you are just beginning to head out on the path of self-discovery. It is through this self-discovery that you develop the tools to heal others.
Mantra & Symbols
In Reiki Level 2 (Okuden) you will learn three mantras and three symbols, along with their descriptions and uses, that aid in the focus of energy. At this level you will start to discover inner qualities such as your Earth, Heaven, and Heart energy. In Reiki Level 3 (Shinpiden) students gain a deeper understanding of these symbols and mantras. The symbols and mantras are yet another tool to help you on your journey of discovering “true-self”
Reiju/Attunements/Initiations
Traditionally, Usui performed reiju (a spiritual blessing or offering). As the definition may indicate these were spiritual in nature, and would be performed with him sitting directly in front of the student merely sharing space, being the “bright light”, and meditate together. Usui quickly realized that for some to be able to fully recognize or receive a reiju that laying on of hands was necessary. However, a reiju can come in many forms. These were meant to help to awaken ones own the innate abilities. A reminder that we all have our own “great bright light”. Over the years, for many teachers, it has become more ritualistic rather than a meeting of two energies, and a reminder that we are all one.
In each level (Shoden/Okuden/Shinpiden) you will receive a reiju/attunement in order to help you on your own spiritual/personal development. In Shinpiden you will learn how to perform reiju/attunements for each level. Once Shinpiden is completed you start to see how Reiki is an integral part of everyday life. You start to recognize and utilize all of the tools that you have developed from day one.

Alternative Treatment Options for IBS
Alternative Treatment Options for IBS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS, is a common disorder that affects the colon and can cause disruption to everyday life. There are several ways to manage IBS ranging from pharmaceuticals to simple changes in diet and lifestyle. However, many do not realize that Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, and NAET Allergy Elimination are also highly effective.
Symptoms of IBS may include: gas, bloat, alternating constipation and diarrhea, pain, mucus, abdominal cramping. For many these symptoms start to develop over time, and there are no anatomical changes that can be detected to determine the cause. Although the cause of IBS is unknown, most doctors agree that stress and diet could be triggers. Studies have shown that women suffer from IBS more frequently then men.
Traditional Chinese Medicine does not diagnose the same way as Western medicine does. You will never hear an acupuncturist tell you that you have IBS. However, you may hear “liver-spleen disharmony” due to stress. Remember, when a TCM practitioner refers to an organ system they do not mean the physiological organ system associated with Western medicine. Rather, they are referring to the energetics of the organ system and meridians associated to Traditional Chinese Medicine. The liver is in charge of the free flow of energy, blood and oxygen to the spleen and stomach. The spleen and stomach organ systems are responsible for digestion and taking the nutrients from the food to be transported back to the liver organ system which then makes the “blood”. This function of the spleen is commonly referred to transporting and transforming the food.
When the liver energy becomes stagnant through emotions such as stress, frustration, anger, moodiness, unresolved emotions, and tightness in the body (the liver is kind of a cranky organ system and is sensitive to these emotions), this hinders proper digestion and what can result is acid, belching, nausea, abdominal distention, and bloating. Diarrhea or constipation can occur, or alternating constipation and diarrhea. Other common symptoms of liver qi stagnation are PMS, cramping with clots and irregular menstruation. The most important part of the treatment plan to get to the root of the issue would be to decrease stress. Stress plays a huge role in so many pathologies. Regardless of if you choose acupuncture, reiki (or other energy work), yoga, meditation, or mindfulness certain lifestyle changes may be appropriate.
Another common cause of IBS is food sensitivity. Eliminating trigger foods has been shown to help tremendously. NAET Allergy Elimination has been shown to be incredibly beneficial for most digestive issues including IBS. Here are some things to consider eliminating:
Too many cold, raw vegetables: In order to properly digest raw foods your body must first bring it down to body temperature. This causes it to work harder than needed which can dampen the digestive fire and leads to malabsorption. Cook vegetables (steam) instead and eat them warm.
Cruciferous vegetables and legumes: These are healthy but can cause gas and bloating in sensitive individuals.
Dairy: Lactose intolerance can lead to digestive ailments. If you aren’t sure, try eliminating dairy such as milk, yogurt and cheese.
Eating fast, while angry or hurried: When you eat or drink quickly, you might be inhaling too much air and eating too much. Eat slowly and mindfully.
Other triggers: Sensitivities might include chocolate, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, greasy food or processed food. Hormonal changes could also be a factor in increased IBS symptoms.
How to know for sure? It is always best to see your primary medical provider to see if you have IBS and not something more serious. Your TCM practitioner can help you by helping you to understand the pattern that you fall into according to Chinese medicine, administer acupuncture and perhaps recommend herbal medicine, and adjust your diet to eliminate triggers that are irritating for your particular constitution.
Some recommendations for IBS include acupuncture to improve flow in the abdomen and ease stress, reiki (and other energy work) to aid in stress, NAET Allergy Elimination, herbs, increasing fiber (gradually, or it could worsen symptoms), abdominal massage, exercise (such as tai qi, qigong), and probiotics to increase good bacteria in the stomach. Peppermint, magnesium, and chamomile have also been found to help soothe and ease symptoms.
Calandra Center for Health and Wellness offers a variety of modalities that have been shown to be beneficial for IBS including: Acupuncture, NAET Allergy Elimination, Reiki, Ayurvedic Medicine. Please contact us for your complementary 15 minute phone consultation.
CCHW is located in Chicago’s South Loop and in Arlington Heights Illinois.

ACUPUNCTURE: So Much More Than Just Sticking People with Needles
ACUPUNCTURE: So much more than just sticking people with needles
Acupuncture is becoming more main stream. However, many people still do not know the entire scope of Chinese medicine, which includes so much more than just inserting a needle.
The practice of Chinese medicine starts with a diagnosis. This is not the type of diagnosis that you would receive at your primary care office. You will never hear an acupuncturist say “you have Hashimoto’s”. The practitioner will ask you many questions. Some are about your chief complaint while others are not. You can expect to be asked questions around digestion, appetite, diet, sleep patterns, bowel movements, urination, pain, lifestyle, and stress level. It is important to note that during this detailed intake the practitioner will also be observing voice pitch, hair luster, skin color/tone, as well as posture, mood, and any type of abnormal odor (for example a sinus infection tends to give off a certain odor). Once the initial intake is finished your acupuncturist will do a pulse and tongue analysis, that will help to further differentiate what Chinese medicine pattern you fall into. Finally, blood pressure might be measured and other applicable tests might be done, including palpation of the body. Once all of this is done, a Traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis and treatment plan is determined. The acupuncturist will then review both with you, and answer any questions that you might have.
Example of a Typical Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Plan
Needles: Acupuncture needles are very fine, sterile, painless and safe. Some say that at most they may feel a sensation of a mosquito bite if anything at all.
The needles are the primary component of an acupuncture treatment. However, with NAET Allergy Elimination acupressure is also available.
They are placed into certain acupuncture points on the body, either locally (at the pain site) or distally (away from the pain). The needles are retained anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes and most find the treatment to be relaxing and calming. Many people take this opportunity to take a nap, regroup, and recharge.
Herbal formulas: Chinese medicine includes could also include herbal formulas. The herbs and acupuncture needles work together to bring the body into harmony naturally.
Herbal formulas are a great way to continue healing at home.
Herbal formulas come in either patent formulas (pills), or the practitioner will make you your own formula.
Many herbal formulas were originally created thousands of years ago, and still apply today. The thing that makes them so unique is that they are specially designed to not overdo the amount of one herb that might cause harm in another part of the body. They are perfectly harmonized. It is for this reason that many herbalists cringe at the idea of someone taking a random herb, or many random herbs that someone read is good for one symptom. When someone does this they are not creating a harmonized formula. They are essentially throwing a dart at a board and hoping it will stick.
Here is an example: if you are trying to get drain damp, there will be herbs to drain damp (by promoting urination perhaps) but also herbs to mitigate the strong effects a damp-clearing herb might have on other organs. By draining to much damp you could cause dehydration. In this way, there is always a balance. Herbal formulas treat not only the symptoms but also the root cause.
Nutritional counseling: In Chinese medicine food is medicine. It is very common that you will receive tailored dietary advice to help your specific constitution.
For example, if someone has a pale tongue with a white coating, and it is puffy with teeth marks on the side, and a slimy tongue coat, this might indicate this person has too much damp, which is hampering the digestion. This person would also have gas, bloating, belching, possibly acid reflux. Chinese medicine rates food according to its temperature, season, color, shape and whether it’s right for your individual body.
For this type of presentation, it would be recommended to limit cold raw foods (including iced drinks and smoothies). A food such as ginger might be a nice addition to one’s diet in this case.
Cupping and Gua Sha: Cupping uses glass cups heated with a small flame to create a suction on the skin. This dissipates stagnation of blood and lymph fluid, promotes blood flow, eases stiffness, encourages better circulation to muscles and tissues, and feels great. It may leave a red to purple “cup” mark, only temporarily.
Gua sha uses a flat edged tool that is scraped in one direction on the skin, usually on large areas such as the back. Gua sha is used for many ailments, but especially for pain and stiffness. It removes blood stagnation and promotes the smooth flow of oxygen and blood. Waste and toxins are removed, and the scraping helps circulate fluid and nutrients, encouraging microcirculation in soft tissue. Gua sha can be used on the face for health and beauty, as well.
Moxibustion: Moxibustion is heated mugwort and comes in many forms. Usually this smoky herb is held over an area of the body to warm and circulate. It’s great for menstrual cramps and chronic pain.
As you can see, the wide practice of acupuncture is much more than just needles. In addition to the above mentioned supplements to treatment, some practitioners use massage techniques, a form of manipulation called Tui Na, or acupressure.

The Benefits of Cupping
The Benefits of Cupping
It seems like every time you read something or turn on the TV there is someone showing off their cupping marks or doing a demonstration. Cups are easily acquired and viewed by many to not be harmful. However, I would caution you to seek the advice of a licensed acupuncturist prior to using. The reason being that cupping, contrary to popular belief, is NOT for everyone. It can be very beneficial for pain. However, in Chinese Medicine pain can be due to many different reasons. If the reason for your low back pain is due to deficiency then cupping is not for you, and in fact it can make you worse. Only a practitioner of Chinese Medicine can tell you if cupping would be beneficial for your situation. Secondly, cupping should ONLY be performed once the prior marks are gone or mostly gone. Constant cupping of the same spot before it has had a chance to heal could cause damage to the skin and muscle tissue. There is such a thing as to much cupping.
So what is cupping?
Cupping is not something unique to just Chinese Medicine. Ever see the Godfather where Fredo is an infant and getting cupped because he has pneumonia? The truth is that cupping, in one form or another, appears in a number of societies.
There are many different types of cupping. All of them have the basic premise of causing a suction on the skin.
Fire cupping: use glass jars that look like mini fish bowls. A flame is used to remove the oxygen from in side of the jar prior to putting it on the skin which causes suction. Historically, a cup would be made out of bone or bamboo.
Plastic cupping: uses a small specially designed plastic cup with an apparatus that is used to remove the oxygen. For many practitioners this is the most preferred method. Primarily because it is easier to control the amount of suction being created, and is easier to use on sensitive areas like the face.
Rubber cupping: uses rubber cups. You commonly see professional athletes walking around with these. They are easily applied because the work much like a suction cup would.
Wet cupping: Uses the same concepts with fire cupping or with the plastic cups. However, prior to applying the cup a small incision is made in the skin. Once the cup is applied blood is pulled into the cup. Although a very powerful treatment very few practitioners still do this because of blood born pathogens.
Sliding cupping: Cups are applied over an oil or massage cream, and then moved up and down the major muscles. Most commonly used on the back.
What does cupping do and what about those marks?
Cupping is used primarily as a fascial release. It is used to remove “stasis” deep within the muscle tissue to help relieve pain and toxins. Cupping can also be used in facial rejuvenation treatments as a means to increasing blood flow. Once again.. do not try that at home unless you want a giant hickey on your forehead.
Depending on the amount of stasis present in the tissue you may have small marks varying from red to almost black. These marks last about a week or two. Arnica gel and a lot of water help them to dissipate a little faster. It is encouraged that, like with a massage, that you stay well hydrated so that the lactic acid from the muscle does not resettle.
Calandra Center for Health and Wellness is located in Chicago’s South Loop and Arlington Heights. Cupping is offered at both locations.

Alternative Treatment Options for Allergies and Asthma- Using Traditional Chinese Medicine
Did you know that asthma and allergies are closely related? Asthma, which affects roughly one in 12 people according to the CDC, is characterized by spasms of the small airways and inflammation. Furthermore, about 90% of children under the age of 16 with asthma have allergies, while 70% of people between the ages of 16 and 30 have allergies, and 50% of adults over the age of 40 have allergies. These numbers are on the rise.
Many people rush to mask their symptoms with nasal sprays and antihistamines rather than seeking a treatment for the root cause. This may take care of the immediate solution, but may cause other issues in the long run.
Both asthma and allergies (in this case I am going to be referring to inhalant allergens only) involve an overreaction of the body’s immune system to what it believes is a foreign invader. When the body is exposed to an allergen (e.g. ragweed, pet dander, pollen, etc.) the immune system produces an abundance of inflammatory hormones, which subsequently cause the symptoms of allergies and asthma to manifest.
Alternative Treatment Options for Allergies
NAET Allergy Elimination:
Is a non-invasive, drug free, natural solution to eliminate allergies of all types and intensities using a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, and kinesiological disciplines of medicine. NAET has been shown to be quantifiable through both IgE and IgG testing. Essentially, NAET is able to hit the reboot button on the body so it no longer recognizes items as an allergen.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has also been shown to improve the symptoms for outdoor allergies and asthma. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involves stimulating the body’s life force (Qi) by placing small, thin needles directly under the skin. When a person’s Qi grows stagnant or experiences other problems, he or she is more susceptible to disease and illness. Therefore, correcting this problem through acupuncture will naturally deter allergies, asthma and other common problems.
Dietary & Lifestyle Changes The lack of nutrients and increased intake of preservatives can disturb the immune system, causing greater sensitivity to allergens. A better choice is to consume a diet rich in lean meats, fresh fruits, and vegetables. It is important to avoid any known food sensitivities. According to Chinese Medicine items such as dairy, sugar, grains and soy have been known to cause increase phlegm. Which can exasperate any allergy or asthma symptoms. For more food options please visit “Dietary Recommendations for Lung Disorders”.
Chinese Herbal Medicine herbal medicine is a time-tested alternative treatment for allergies and asthma. Herbs like stinging nettle, ginkgo biloba, green tea, and reichi all contain heavy concentrations of antioxidants. These antioxidants are believed to fight harmful chemicals in the body known as free radicals, which if left unchecked, may irritate existing conditions like allergies and asthma. Now, before you go rushing out to the store to buy these herbs it should be noted that not every herb is conducive to ever person. Please consult your trained herbalist prior to starting any herbal supplements. Your practitioner is trained to also determine the possibility of any herb/drug interactions.
At Calandra Center for Health and Wellness we offer a number of different modalities that have been shown to help with allergies and asthma. Why suffer? We are conveniently located in Chicago’s South Loop and Arlington Heights Illinois.
Call today to learn how you can get back on track to better health!

Acupuncture for Fertility
ACUPUNCTURE FOR FERTILITY
The treatment of infertility in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) differs greatly from conventional medicine. Depending on where you are on your journey you may be working with your gynecologist or a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). A RE specializes in the treatment of infertility, and therefore has a lot more tools to be able to treat it. However, many still feel that the treatments are not individualized and that they are pushed through like cattle.
Acupuncture treatments are focused on an individual’s needs, customizing its treatments accordingly, and works well with or without artificial reproductive therapy (ART which is either IVF or IUI).
There are many reasons why men and women have challenges conceiving, and each person’s fertility journey is unique. Acupuncture is a personalized complete approach which places an emphasis on every symptom. This individualized approach increases your chances of conceiving by natural means. It is a viable solution that has been shown to provide assistance for men and women that are infertile.
The Basics of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and utilizes thin needles on specific points on different parts of the body. Fertility is improved by reinstating the stability in the body’s qi (life energy) by eliminating any blockages within the twelve major meridians of the body. Meridians are similar to blood vessels, but they are transporting qi instead of blood. An individual is believed to be in good physical health when all twelve meridians carry a balanced amount of qi. On the other hand, blockage of the vital qi can lead to health problems, including infertility.
There are several factors that contribute to infertility including excessive coffee consumption, alcohol intake, job related stress and malnutrition. These factors have been identified to have an adverse effect on the qi in the kidney, liver and spleen meridians. Acupuncture has been shown to be beneficial for people who have the aforementioned patterns.
Impact of Acupuncture on Female Fertility
Numerous studies have shown the effects of acupuncture on female fertility. Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. This can help with the maturation and release of a dominant follicle, and increase the uterine lining. Acupuncture has also been shown to help with hormone balancing and can aid in endometriosis (blood stasis in Chinese Medicine), polycystic ovarian syndrome, luteal phase defect, increased levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), anovulation (not ovulating), amenorrhea (absence of period), and dysmanorrhea (painful period).
During each acupuncture session you will be asked where you are in your cycle, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Each session is specifically geared around where you are in your cycle. Your acupuncturist will help you to accurately map out the phases of your cycle, and the timing of intercourse in order to increase your chances of a natural conception.
It can take three months or more to regulate hormones. It is important to know that in more severe situations like PCOS or fibroids it may take longer. The number of sessions a week are determined on where you are in your cycle. Generally, you will be seen more frequently during your follicular phase (day 1- ovulation), and less frequently during your luteal phase. We are only able to move blood to the uterus and ovaries prior to ovulation. Once you have ovulated the treatment protocol focuses on implantation.
Impact of Acupuncture on Male Fertility
Acupuncture treatments can be effective for male infertility as well. It takes approximately three months to regulate hormones and for new sperm to form.
A study that recently appeared in Fertility and Sterility reveals the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment on male fertility. A group of men with unexplained infertility underwent acupuncture treatment two times a week for five weeks. Then, after three days of abstinence, two samples of semen were taken from them (one before the start of regular treatment, and the second after the most recent acupuncture treatment).
The collected samples were compared to a batch of 12 samples taken from an untreated control group. The study indicated that samples from the acupuncture group presented 50% higher sperm motility, higher levels of healthy sperm and 38% better sperm morphology. Although acupuncture treatment cannot treat every sperm malfunction, the study suggested that it can enhance male fertility stemming from poor sperm production and quality.
For as long as there has been acupuncture it has been used to address fertility. Time and again acupuncture has been shown to help both men and women with their fertility needs, increasing their chances of conceiving naturally or with ART.
