A Long Winter-Time Ago
A Platonic Solomon Salt (S/I) × Caesar Clown One Shot
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Warnings/Triggers: None, except some minor HC use that Caesar is a spoiled Nepo-Baby and some minor inspiration for his eventual Gas Coat since I like to imagine he gets cold easily and that it makes him look bigger and that Salt influenced a lot of his own habits later in life.
Genre: Platonic Fluff (potential minor Angst?)
Word count: 1,718
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
The sun wasn't out yet as the moon glazed over the bright floors of whites. The snowflakes sprinkled overhead through the curling winds and twinkled above like added stars in the remaining night sky.
Each foot step crunched the covered path down the walkway to each house down the street, a line of homes that had their lights on for most. It was the awakened morning of a northern breeze that came through; The late winter that came finally during the night and calmed during the morning on the island.
Still, it was cold but Salt had her Zoan fruit useful this time around. Walking outside on her hybrid Merino form. The wool was a natural insulation for her. Only the top of her nose felt the chill of the crisp skies.
A little silhouette behind golden orb lights behind the windows disappeared as Salt looked up. The front door opened soon after.
“Finally. I've been waiting!” A pipsqueak tone erupted, as with frustration rode out with a sudden shudder as the cold came. The short kid with his black bowl-bob of a hairdo was already ruffled by the hit of wind. His golden eyes stared at Salt. He was sinking into his ugly brown fur-coat.
“Hey… I came out for you to take you to school.” Salt replied lightly, she wasn't offended by her friend's impatience.
“Yeah? And Let's go,” He grabbed onto Salt's sweater. Dragging the larger girl along. Urgent to push and shove along to start running on his small legs and snap out. “I can't be last at school because then my seat is going to be taken away like last time!”
“Don't worry. I promise. I woke up early this time to get out,” She was pretty swell in her mood, singing almost if one can tell. “ You'll have the seat. And I can sit next to you and then we can work on our project in that notebook you mentioned.”
“... Well if we're last we'll definitely not. I'm not sitting there in the class listening to just basic mathematical equations I already know!” He huffed further. Salt would then slowly skip along and finally rush along.
The two then made their way down the street of the town. Which surprised the only man out was a hauling wagon with a horse attached. He didn't say anything but the two stopped at a four way street of pathways, one to the store district, one to the lower income of the island, and the other to the beach, with the dock and massive shipment house were for imports and exported goods.
The moment arrived. A sudden shiver came across Caesar.
“Wait, Salt!”
He called out before Salt was nearly halfway to the street traveling down the pathway to the lower district.
She turned around.
“Payaso? What?”
“I'm cold.”
“Of course you're going to be cold, it's winter here.”
“But like, I'm really cold.”
Salt can't hate her friend for the fact this was likely the first time out of his home for Winter he got to be in. Yet she easily then skipped back over to cheat his coat.
“Your coat isn't working?”
“It's still cold. I don't know why, and it's frustrating me because Mother said it would be good enough.”
Salt then checked it with her hands, patting and touching the fur but the fur felt dried and weak. It was fake fur; instead it was faux fur. Salt frowned under the realization.
“This isn't real fur. Plus I think your coat is a hand me down.”
Caesar expressed genuine disgust. His eyes opened with anger second to him stomping his foot down. From what was a good mood now to a sour bordering temper tantrum.
“What a disgrace. I thought mother got me the best. She doesn't care for me? Now I'm going to freeze and she's going to be sad but she shouldn't because it's her fault.”
“... Come here, you can use my coat for extra warmth. ” She took her own coat off. Easily trying to calm the sudden outburst Caesar had.
“I got my own wool to keep me warm. I think my coat is overkill but I just enjoy being warm anytime of the year.”
“Wool? You're lucky. I wish I didn't have to be cold. I don't want to use your coat. I want a good coat of my own,” he sniffed. “Plus it probably smells…”
“Maybe you smell stinky...” Salt retorted. “Boys always stink more than girls. Maybe your coat is so stinky it rotted all the stuff that keeps you warm.”
He stomps on her foot.
“ OW YOU!!!”
She then smacked him in the face. A loud whip of her hand was heard.
Caesar Clown froze and stared at Salt. The redness showing in his cold face, a red appeared. She really did smack him harshly. He teared up.
Salt stared at him from a frown now into a soft look. She felt… Sorry.
He erupted into a loud screech
“You hurt me… Salt! I thought we were friends!”
“We are! You just never want to take what I give because you want everything just for you that was made for you!”
“But… I want it for me because that's yours. Not mine. I don't want it.”
Salt paused. Taking in the words again this time more carefully. She realized she had likely mistaken his words. Yet she felt still pushed away in a sudden turn of things. She held her hands into bawled fists.
“Now leave me alone, you don't like me. Don't you?
“But you hurt me first.”
“That's because you made fun of me.”
“... You should learn to accept some help?”
“I already was generous enough to let you with my project… Now we're going to be late because of you making me mad!”
Salt huffed and her own cheeks rushed with anger. She would turn her head to the side and shake her head.
“Come on.”
“No. You should apologize to me, Salt. I don't want to go now.”
“But you're going to freeze.”
“Well, you should have thought of not smacking me first then…”
Salt let out a loud given sigh and swung her hands around now freeing her hands from her fist.
“ Let me just take you into my hold, I'll try to cover you from the cold until we get to the school. Then you can leave me alone then.”
His face was red from the crispy air freezing his tears and snot. Although it was gross and Salt hated that, she wrapped her arms around him. Trying to pay his shoulder.
Caesar nearly was about to shove her before he did feel much warmer. Although not perfect. He pushed aside his anger momentarily. The wool made him suddenly go quiet and breathe more regularly. Only then under his breath he spoke once again.
“Get me to school.”
–--------------------
The next day it was cold again, this time after school. Things were still awkward but Salt came over this time, knocking on the door only for the small little boy to pop out from his home. He nearly shut the door before Salt forced a foot in. The little kids were full of their personalities and grudges already and Salt was too stubborn to let a door be shut on her face.
“Payaso! I have something for you.”
When he was frustrated with her keeping the door open. He looked at the box in her hands to then slowly open the door. The cold was freezing him.
“I promise just take the box… I made I for you.”
Caesar looked around then behind him, speculating if anyone in his family was around before facing Salt. He took the box and sat down there at the entrance with a small thud on the hardwood floor before the box was then abruptly opened and revealed then a wooly wrap of a mess.
“... Huh?”
“Unfold and shift it around and you'll see.”
He then carefully caressed it flat and reworked it to be then given that it was actually a wool coat. A soft lovely wool coat with the front being stitched with his initials.
“Huh. What's this?”
“You said before I was the lucky one to have wool while you froze. I felt bad for smacking you and thought maybe this can replace your sucky-coat and be a good apology gift. You seemed to like soft things.”
“I hate the cold.” He spat.
“Yes but… This? Do you like it? I added your initials so everyone knows it's yours and only yours. Because, like my coat. It's mine and only mine.”
Caesar was a bit unsure how to respond then. The anger. It seemed now just turned into confusion.
“You remember what I said?”
“Yes. I just felt bad. Payaso. You're my only friend and I can't leave you with other nerds who think I'm weird. I have to know what you like!”
He turned his head to the coat before he threw it over head and slid the sleeves on. He felt instantly comfortable the first time he suited it on. Be it, a bit oversized but it felt right. He got onto his two legs.
“I guess you can still be my friend… But boys do not stink, not me. I'm the only one who doesn't stink.”
“You never smell. I was just saying that as a joke…”
“ Okay I see. Well I'm busy- my mother said dinner was going to be done soon. I'll put this away. The cost is very nice because it's not fake like the fur coat I had.”
“So are the plans back up?”
“Yes. The plans are up.”
“I'm so glad. I knew we wouldn't break our friendship over that.”
“... Yeah. Now seriously. Leave. I'm hungry.”
“Okay!”
Salt turned and hitched her way out from his vision. He closed the door behind her before he scooped up the box. The cost he wore was much warmer compared to the coat. The initials also were neat. Just like Salt did with everything she wore, now he had his own “Caesar” thing.
He would put the box into the trash and go to the kitchen to see where his mother was at making dinner.
